Unsure how anyone could give this a thumbs down, completely amazing song.

One of their best songs in my opinion, and by this point this point Oakes had pretty much mastered Butler's parts. However Butler will always be one of my favourite guitar players. If you can find the Blackpool Ballroom gig with Butler playing songs from Dog Man Star, it's amazing. Wish I'd seen them live before Butler left, but still went to a great gig after Oakes joined.

I like how Oaksey has the exact same guitar as Bernard for this - it needs that whammy bar

Oakes did a fabulous job! 10/10 I don’t dare to abuse the bigsby like that...I’ll go out of tunes in 30 secs lol

Anybody else read Brett’s two volumes of memoirs?

Yes, CBM is particularly good. Anderson is a fine writer, his lyrics (and the band) never really got the full credit i feel they deserved.

Richard Oakes is a way better guitarist than Bernard Butler

That is not a popular view, primarily due to rock sentimentality, but I agree with you here. And I appreciate that Oakes doesn´t refuse to play these songs or destroy them at all. He enhances them. At the end of the day, Butler was actually replaced quickly and easily.

@belturbet4 So much better than Bernard that they need to use a rhythm guitarist to share the work Bernard could do single handed? Richard is a more clinical guitarist with a cleaner sound, Bernard was brilliant enough that he was able to let his emotions lead him when playing and didn't care about sounding clinical. Two very different musicians, but only one actually wrote this music. And if he was replaced "easily" then we wouldn't still be debating it 30 years later and Brett wouldn't still be telling people that spliting with Bernard was biggest regret in life.

@@sunny70299 No Suzy not really. If you refer to the Dog man star tour 1994/1995 when Richard was the sole guitar player he replicated Bernard's guitar parts flawlessly on his own. Mind you he was also only 18 at the time! Suede don't "need to" use a 2nd rhythm guitarist at all really they only do it on a couple songs to give Neil Codling something to do when no keyboards are required.

@jasperhalco871 "Bernard's guitar parts" you've hit on the issue there. The thing about Bernard is that he is an instinctive musician, he never played a song the same way twice he let his feelings in the moment guide him and didn't care about replicating what was recorded in the studio. He is a genius musician, Richard is just a very good one.
