The Mazda NA Miata MX-5 debuted at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, but it was manufactured inHiroshima, because they've made it their mission to avoid any more bombs. It was conceived as a small roadster, and the first gen featured the 1.6 L straight four with DOHC. It sold 400,000 units from 1989-1997, which is pretty impressive when you consider that small roadsters were on the way out at the end it was released. The Alfa Romeo Spider was in production, but it was the only small roadster produced at a comparable volume, so the MX-5 filled a gaping hole in the market. In the first generation, this was a car for the kind of guy who uses the term “confirmed bachelor” to avoid addressing his sexuality in mixed company. But the Miata would grew to be the pre-cum of bro culture, with later generations serving as the full load. It was derivative of other roadsters, but that was part of its charm. It had a reverence for the classics but also an inflated sense of its own importance. It's the Kanye West of cars.

Went to an autocross today. There were three of these things running around. The Mustangs and Subarus might have been faster, but the Miata drivers looked like they were having the most fun.

This feels like the follow-up to that Aston Martin review last year. If an Aston Martin signifies "there're things out there you can never achieve", then the Miata is the car that says "and that's okay".

One might argue the miata is better, but on American highways would you not have more enjoyment with straight acceleration versus the relatively infrequent lateral acceleration?

I own a 1990 Miata, and I have to say pretty much all about this is true. Lot's of "bro's" disapprove of my feminine car, but I don't care. Driving an MX5 is fun and that is what I care about :D

Got my `92 NA last week. I bought it for my own, selfish driving pleasure for not much money and it has delivered very well so far.
My 91 NA gets some chuckles from my guy friends, but random ladies on the streets of downtown love it, which more than makes up for the bro's
you must have a really large knob. i considered mx5, but they are a tad expensive for what they are, and i really like the na most, but there are none on sale (i.e. it's not that exciting to me to wait for one to appear) in moscow.
the only thing i really would like to change is the cooling duct for the radiator (i.e. the whole bumper i guess). it looks as if the car was smiling, and that, i think, is not feminine, it's rather gay.
all in all, i'd rather have a jdm nissan sedan with a vg30det.

I find it weird that this is even considered a girls car I've only ever met two Miatas owned by women. The rest are all men everything from a 16 year old student to an ex-cop in his early nineties. This car is as big a sausage fest as any Ferrari. I think insecure men hate this car because it challenges the definition of masculinity. It isn't femininity its closer to gentlemanliness. Which harkens back to the British roots that this Japanese roadster blatantly copies. You'll find far more of the fairer sex behind the wheel of any Camaro or Mustang.

I agree I have never seen a single woman even in an mx5(even the new ones) most women either drive pick trucks/SUVs that are so big they cant see over the dashboard or mustangs and camaros that they are too timid to drive at road speeds let alone how they are meant to be pushed. men generally stick to luxury brands or really big trucks (F-450) you can tell I live in the south :P Im the odd man out with my early model asian import

I call bs on that I've had a handful of tickets driving mine. User error, flying past a cop at 100 mph doesn't do you any favors. In retrospect i was 18 and just got the car so i was a little too excited when i saw that long, straight and hilly road. Don't even get me started on the twists and turns though.

Well done sir. Way to sum up all of my thoughts and feeling about my car. Surprisingly in the short time I have owned the car I have had heard the criticism, the arguments of practicality and the hate. It all goes away every time I get in to go anywhere.
It was a fun day filming this (I wish I had chosen better camera placement for the twisty road we did).
You should go to his redbubble site and get the "headlights go up/headlights go down" sticker to slap on there! I think there's three types of people when it comes to miatas--Bros that can't stand them and make fun of them, Regular fans who laugh and joke and have fun with the whole "Track day, bro!" headlight and "It's the best!" gags, in loving fun with our fellow car-guys, and the people who just don't care and understand that they are what they are, and love them for who they are.
Personally, I'm in the Regular fan group, and I always enjoy a good miata. I mean, you kinda have to, because it's the best! I don't, however, like how they're pulling a 90's Camaro and making it look like a catfish for the new gen. Bleck.

i remember having this discussion with a stranger that was driving beside me in his jet black NA miata. I was in my AW11 MR2 and it was a red light, we both complimented each others cars and he brought up the fact that everyone thinks his car is feminine, but similar cars with "boxier" designs like mine were more "masculine". I told him that cars don't have a gender, dude, they're machines

IMHO it's the non car people who see this car as a "hair dressers" car, every car person you talk to usually has something good to say about the Miata.
The Audi TT is for hair dressers.
Had mine going up a mountain once, yeah it "zoomed" right up to 120 mph, I backed off there. They say a 2000 can do 135 mph flat out, I bet it can. If it were a hair dressers car I would not have had to back off. lol

maxima nig There are quite a few vehicles of this vintage that have sunroofs in optional hardtops. An interesting example is the Isuzu Amigo/Rodeo Sport.

If you need more power forget putting a V8 in there, just stick a turbo on the stock motor. Keeps the spirit of the car intact (the motor was originally designed to take a turbo).
I agree. Plus you'll have higher acceleration with the lighter engine, than you would the V8.
@@ExtraGloves240 lol no, absolutely not, No replacement for displacement, put a turbo on the V8 and a 4 cylinder is irrelevant. More cylinders and more displacement is better. Not to say high strung small motors aren't impressive
Turbo lag is not really part of the spirit either. I think the ideal to get power without compromise is a V6, the stock engine is so heavy you can replace it with a lot of V6 without even gaining weight.

This was the first car I ever wanted, when I was 9 and I went with my dad to the Mazda dealership to buy a stripper B2200 pickup. The Miata had just come out. The dealership only had one, it was the base model and blue. It had silver steelies. It was cheap too, like 11,000? My dad told me he would buy me one when I turned 15 and got my driver's license. That was a lie. He did give me the B2200 though, 5 years later, and I put 300,000 miles on that thing, AFTER the 60,000 he had already put on it.
I didn't know strippers drove B2200 pickups, I'll have to keep an eye out.

you will never go to a track day without seeing a miata one time i went to a track day with my dad and there were 4 or 5 miatas at a track with 40 - 50 cars
I have the NB, a 1999 before the 2001 facelift that tried to make them look more agressive. I love it's smiley little face. Yeah I didn't leave it as stock, though it was with me for a long time before being modified. However I do everything in my power to keep those original characteristics of the miata, and the spirit of the car intact. I may have put bracing on the chassis to stiffen it, may have installed new Fox coilovers to make it carve through corners even more, may have done a coolant reroute and installed a turbo, but in spirit however the car is still the same. I have a piggyback ECU that only alters the signals from the stock ECU under boost, meaning that whenever the car isn't making boost it just acts completely stock. I've tried so hard to preserve that car and only do tasteful modifications for my entire period of ownership, and I'm glad to say it's characteristics are pretty much unmolested.

I bought a '97 Miata in 2007. 10 years old and only had 30,000 miles on it. Single owner, garage kept, summer car. Pristine condition.
Zero rust. Almost no dirt under the hood. Proper oil changes and maintenence with receipts. No leaks or anything. Perfect condition. Bought it for 9,000. Best money I ever spent.
I was a basic bro before I found this car. First time I sat in it, my entire view of the world changed.
Getting rid of this car is my biggest regret in life. I will buy another someday. When I have the money.

Im 20 now and I've has my miata for 2 years now. I love it. I'm also a mechanic. If I had a dollar for every person who made a joke about the car. Stock and I can't help but love it. I put a lot of time into it so far and dont really want to 'Fix it up' maybe renew a couple of things. Paint, get a. Hardtop. Maybe a lip and some rims but at most rework some internals. I love the car and i could care less for what people say but I taken down an evox on a mountain downhill and i was waiting for him for 30 seconds. It may be because i didnt let off the gas and was going a little crazy on the corners but that day I realized that amazing handling this car had. Now every time i go to LA i have a race with the owner of the evox. He learned to respect it as well. This car is amazing and I hope more ppl would realize the car for it performance. Call me a queer or faggot but i couldnt ask for a better car. Yes i desire others but this one treats me well.

There is nothing wrong if a car is "femenine". If someone really cares about those gender roles or are unsure of their sexuality, then you're pretty stupid and empty. The Miata is a very cute car, even more nice than a Corvette or a Camaro. It's simply cute. You have to enjoy what you like. There are some straight men have serious problems with this type of cars, but that only brings out their insecurity.

bartekkko Besides the hardtop this car has all factory or Mazda stamped OEM parts. Aside from missing the air guide from a PO hitting a log on the road its about as stock a 100k mile car can be.

My sister has an '04 MX-5, I had it for about a week and fell in love with it. Such beautiful handling that I got comfortable with being a little reckless, something I can't really do on my '96 Corolla (although it can be fun sometimes).
I'm driving a 2004 Saab aero convertible. I bought it because I thought it looked very masculine lol. I'm selling it now and CAN'T WAIT TO BUY A MIATA. Super stoked too. I always drove Camaro's and Trans Am's when I was younger. I finally see the light. Sat in one today for the 1st time. didn't drive it, but it gave me something to look forward to. 👍👍

I drive a 95 miata, and what you said in that last part, about how when you drive a miata you focus on everything but the miata, is true. 10000000000% FUCKING true. I love my miata, its small, its fun, I school civic douche bags on twisty roads, and best of all, its everything I want in a sports car.
These reviews are great and, at the same time give good information and it gets a good laugh for the meta humor and slightly teenage appealing tone. I suppose that's why i find these funny. Either way keep up the good reviews and you just earned a new subscriber.
