Seeing the Kurt Busch news, while I’m stoked his racing career isn’t cut short, makes me more sad at how Jr’s career ended. While Jr got a proper farewell season, the 2016 concussion ended up being the deciding factor to end his career. Makes me think if he had fewer concussions or none in his career, how much longer he could be racing with us.

You are right Eric, that it must be of a concern to NASCAR, if they would let a driver who is marginal, into the Daytona 500 where the speeds are at some of the highest that these cars reach. Also with a few recent crashes, while the catch fences did their job very well, a car could lose control and hit those fences either with more force or in a 1 in a million position and actually (gasp) get through the fence into the fans! I think that Mike might have been spared hurting himself or others, even though I'm sure it is disappointing that he will not race at Daytona. I think he should check with either ARCA or Xfnity teams to try to get a ride, get more up-to-date experience at selected "easier" and slower race tracks, if he is serious about coming back into racing and then he might be approved. Personally every time I watch the Dayton 500, when the cars are in a big pack and I can sense that the "big one" is just one mistake away, my concern and stress level is up! Imagine what executives from NASCAR must be feeling with their fingers crossed that no accident happens and with nearly the entire world watching! Stressful!!! But still I love watching that race! True story about the Chili Bowl: in 2017 I was at Texas for the June truck race, during their driver autograph session. I told C-Bell (who is now my favorite Cup driver) that I correctly picked the last 5 Chili Bowl winners (The late Bryan Clauson, Rico, and C-Bell) He said, you picked me to win the Chili Bowl? Pick me for the next 5 years then! And I think he went on to win the next 2 or 3 in a row before Larson finally got his. All the best racing talent runs the Chili Bowl. Tony Stewart said it best: it's easier to win a Cup race than it is just to make the A Main at the Chili Bowl.

I know the main reason Kasey Kahne retired was due to dehydration issues. He is 44 now. And Denny Hamlin is 44 too.

Every time I hear of an older driver getting back in the car, I think of Neil Bonnet. It's not just getting in a stock car, but the Next Gen car drives differently than the old cars. Look at Jimmy Johnson's struggles. He's a 7 time champion, and I'm not even sure he's finished a race in the LMC 84 car. This is the right decision for Mike Wallace.

Couldn't Mike Wallace just run the ARCA race to get his approval? I know that's always been the cheat/shortcut to do so, since basically anyone can run an ARCA race with money. Even if it can't get him approved for the 500 the literal same week, it could help him get the necessary approval to maybe run Talladega in the spring then run his 500 attempt the year after.

The call made by NASCAR in regards to Mike Wallace is the right one even though I do feel bad for him. I think that NASCAR might of been looking back to the late 1970s when the old Sportsman Division (The precursor to the modern Xfinity Series) had drivers racing at Daytona who had very little to no racing experience overall let alone at Daytona and that caused very serious wrecks that caused drivers to have serious injuries.
Yes I know that Mike Wallace has a lot of experience but he hasn’t raced in the Cup Series for a decade and his last NASCAR starts were in the Xfinity Series in 2020 on road courses. That is a problem when even a mistake by a very experienced and talented driver can cause a big wreck during a race at Daytona and now add a driver who hasn’t raced on a super speedway for a very long time and that can cause major problems on track. So it’s very understandable that NASCAR made the decision that it made in regards to Mike Wallace.

If not Mike Wallace, why not Kenny Wallace? The Herminator has certainly kept up his racing bona fides, might be able to access the same money Mike was (i.e. Mike’s money) , and he’s super popular with fans. MBM might even be able to run a GoFundMe. Would you contribute? I would.
That said, I think Harrison Burton, Corey Lajoie, and even Kurt Busch are all viable options, sponsorships pending.
