    She is gorgeous! The first time firing an engine is the most fun and also when you learn the most, so it is important to film it. Mistakes are nothing to be ashamed of. I make many in my recent first firing of my Mamod. Live and learn.

    I was over at the Accucraft Union City warehouse earlier this week and noticed that they had a dozen kits and another dozen Ready-To-Run 13T Shays in boxes stacked up with shipping labels. Checked TH-cam today to see whether there were any new videos yet and you didn't disappoint! Congratulations -- it runs great!

    I love Shays and I'm absolutely fascinated with live steam! It's amazing to see a scale model operate pretty much like the real thing; foibles and all. Love the various hues of green. Of course the variations can also be attributed to age, sun, and the high temps on a boiler. Thanks for sharing your latest acquisitions!

    Another great video Terry and very timely for me as I have one in "planished iron" on order. FYI the answer I got from Graham at Accucraft UK to my query about minimum radius on 45mm track was "We tested it on a layout at the Llanfair show Mike and I'd say 3' would be the minimum, it started to bind on 2' 6" radius! " Can't wait for mine to arrive.

    Wonderful as usual. I have been following accucraft for years. I wish they would do more in all electric but I am glad you've done the live steam too. I always thought that live steam was beyond me but your video is an inspiration! Can't wait until you do a video in r/c conversion! Does it have a burner cut off if the water gets low? Just curious. Thanks for a other great video!

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks!! There is no burner cut off but, generally, the loco is designed specifically to run out of butane before the boiler lever approaches dry. And like any machine the sight glass is handy and a few squirts of water here and there can be added via the goodall valve. These engines are not as tricky I I supposed they would be before I launched into live steam. I had my worries.

    It is very nice engine. All piston valve engines are like that in this scale, the cylinders are hard to clear condensation. Well if you wanted to you could leave the steam regulator open and use the piston valve reverser as the throttle and direction. Keep it well oiled.

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You know, I have been thinking of adding RC by just doing that, using the reverse lever. Hmmmm

    • @stevenj9414
      @stevenj9414 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi Ian Pearse setup his live steam locos that way. He made them piston valve reverser and the reverser would come r/c controlled but not the steam regulator. Since the shay is geared it would be very forgiving. Still keep watch on the valve gear. The older two cylinder shays from Accucraft, the valve gear could wear badly. The company has gotten a lot better since they acquired Aster.

    • @RhBKeith
      @RhBKeith 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes I agree using the reverser is the way to go, and in fact many Accucraft locos already have the pushrod hole already there in the lever. The LGB/Aster Frank S is also set up to work this way. What a gorgeous little Shay and it seems to run very smoothly!

    Hi Terry, serious question this time... Why the warm tap water? I've not seen that before. I have to say that's a little more sophisticated than the steam engines I usually mess around with. Wonderful video as ever. I hope Henry and Marjory are adjusting to your weather there.

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Henry and Marge do miss the milder climes of Vancouver Island. But they are adjusting ok. I’ll let them know you asked. ☺️ Most of my engines have the butane tank adjacent to the boiler (in the cab). Butane cools fast as the tank empties and becomes less efficient as a result. With the tank adjacent to the boiler the radiant heat keeps the butane efficient. This loco does not have room. The bath helps regulate the warmth of the tank and helps keep the flow efficient. On a hot summer day outside I often did not add water to my other loco’s water tank. But cool to cold weather without water the loco was lethargic at best. Some people buy those small battery operated hand warmers from outdoor stores and stuff one down beside the tank.

    Why do you put water where the gas tank is?

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Cobi  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Gary. As butane vacates the tank the tank temperature drops rapidly and that causes less efficiently in butane vaporization and flow. This is mitigated in live steam engines where the tank is adjacent to the back of the boiler in the cab, as the heat from the boiler warms the tank. When the butane tank is away from the heat of the boiler hot tap water put in at the beginning of each run helps the tank with flow which aids much better firing. After a run the water is fairly cold. You can run the engine without the water bath but the engine would suffer some power loss. Especially so if running outdoors in cool to cold weather.
