      Rubber traction tire(s). I personally love to see an engine's wheels slip when pulling against a heavy load. I spoke with a jeweler about replacing the rubber bands on drive wheels on a couple of my locomotives to see how they would do and he said it could easily be done. After all, these modern locomotives are really heavy and don't need traction assistance, they can pull just fine without it. For me, getting rid of the traction tires means no more dry rot rubber tire replacement. Chris now has me interested in this little model. I recently bought an MTH Climax. I agree with Chris, these small locomotives are great as well.

    Great video as usual. I have the Pennsylvania. Besides the features you discuss I have noticed that the smoke continues for a much longer period of time without the addition of more fluid. This is something that can be a real pain when running engines and the need for multiple stops to refill fluid. This is a great little engine.

    Love the whistle and the price isn’t bad. I wouldn’t mind adding an engine with all those features to my layout. If I’m being particularly picky, I’d say it could go a little slower and it seems the slightest bit jerky at the minimum speed, but then compared to my old engines it’s a dream!
    Great video 👍

      @RBPTrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This engine would be right at home on a Post War layout! Yes, definitely some jerky motion at slow speeds. The engine was not quite broken in when I shot this video. Even after break-in, the engine is not as smooth as it's Legacy counterparts but man can it pull! The most surprising thing was the weight of this piece. Been enjoying your vids as well my friend!

    I own one of these little TANKS and I love it. So when you were testing your locomotive on how many cars it could pull I knew it would be a lot. I had mine pulling a custom log train with 7 modern log cars loaded with real "logs" from real trees and the train weighs a ton. I was amazed when I saw it pull this train. For the price point they are great little engine s for anyone's collection.

  • @frankmarkovcijr5459

    Today's modern Rolling Stock with easy rolling truck let it pull a train bigger than what it would pull in real life. A 0-6- 0 would only pull up about eight cars in real life. In the steam days if you had a train of 20 cars like that a caboose with rear end crew would be mandatory. According to trains magazine a lot of train guys were able to save small switchers like that because they were small they could get loaded on a truck and delivered and you would have one sitting on a piece of track in a Barn. They make great little steam Excursion trains because they are not extremely heavy nor extremely complex easy to maintain and Frugal on coal and water or oil as the case may be.

    Lionel's made this one for a while now, harkens back to the late 90's/early 2000's era along with the ubiquitous 0-8-0. Have one of the earlier conventional versions in SP livery that I picked up as new-old-stock from a dealer for $150. Still runs and puffs smoke just fine, and pulls like a little mule, so I'm very pleased with it, though of late its developed a fault with its electronic whistle.
    Personally believe this is the way forward if Lionel wants to keep from pricing themselves out of business with all the BTO stuff. Have a range of generic locomotives, moderately priced, moderately detailed, but that you could have a variety of road-names and would be easy to customize if you so desired, either with add on packs that could be sold separately to make a specific locomotive, or by the hobbyist themselves at home using traditional DIY methods. Essentially that's what Lionel used to do in the postwar era, and many other model railroad manufacturers used to do all the time.
    Menards seems to have caught on to this with their line of affordable O gauge, reasonable detail for a reasonable price, and I think they're going to be the ones to watch going forward, especially if they start making locomotives on the regular.

    Chris,
    I was at a train show last weekend and purchased a NIB Lionel 0-6-0T Docksider from 2007. They were conventionally run and had an original MSRP of $100; I got mine for $80. It had a light, a reverse light, two operating couplers, and an early electronic whistle. My conventional engine, with new traction tires, can pull 34 scale train cars, so I guess it has the new one beat lol! This new Lionchief 2.0 version has the exact same body and details, right down to the side rod stanchions. Obviously there's a new sound system, smoke unit, and control system, but otherwise they're carbon copies of my favorite era.
    I love postwar trains, but the conventional trains in the early 2000s just appeal to me so much. Do you have any locomotives in your fleet that would fit that category? I have a GP38 and a 2-8-4 Berkshire, both lettered for UP.
    Thanks,
    David

My FAVORITE type were the 0-6-0's that had the slope top tenders. Something about adding the tender makes it feel...stronger to me if that makes sense. I promised myself if I ever start a model railroad i'd start it with a unlettered slope top tender switcher, and work up from there.

    Hi Chris, I know you have some of the Lionel and MTH Santa Fe Black Bonnet pieces. In case your interested just wanted to let you know that Pats Trains just got in the Santa Fe ES44AC Black Bonnet engines. Pat shipped mine out to me today and he said he still has some to sell. Only 50 of these engines were made. Have a good week…..Ron Harford

    New subscriber here. I've watched a ton of your videos as I've always been interested into model railroading, but now also seeing that you have some lego modular buildings near your train layout made me instantly hit the "subscribe" button as I have a massive lego city myself (filled with a bunch of lego trains as well). Keep up the good work! One day I'll come over to model railroading side.

      Welcome aboard and glad to have you here! My Lego city is fairly modest at the moment but I am hoping to add more as I go. The buildings really make for a fun scene and it is one of my favorite parts of the layout. Lego trains fascinate me! You should post some videos of your Lego City here on YT!

    Great video Chris. I love to do yard work with my Postwar NW-2 #621 Jersey Central Diesel Switcher, but I need a little steamer like this O-6-0 Docksider. I think you sold me on this one!! I’m gonna ask Santa Claus for it. LOL

    I have two Lionel 8516 0-4-0’s from the middle 1980’s. Nice and heavy along with the front coupler but if you get them going fast down a straight they hunt L R L R L R within the gauge.

    • @RBPTrains
      @RBPTrains  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I notice that this one also hunts within the gauge at speed. Thanks for watching!

      Honestly that's what lead to my decision to get the A4 switcher instead. MUCH smoother slow speed operation. A4s are cheap too.

      @Henry Hamann - great question! I shot this video fresh out of the box. I ran the engine for 20 minutes today in a continuous loop and the performance became much better and smoother with regard to the motion. I think the inconsistent motion at slow speed in the video is due to the engine literally coming out of the box and going on the track. Thanks for watching!
