  • Lec dem at Shaale, Bangalore, Sep 2018
Vidya Subramanian’s lec-dem covers the following topics:
    • Theory and practice - bridging the gap: In this segment, Vidya discusses about the importance of developing a strong knowledge of Carnatic theory right from the foundational stage of learning. She also delves into how students of various learning levels can incorporate manodharma (improvisational) aspects as part of their learning / practice routine. The lecture also shares ideas that teachers and parents can include as part of their lesson plan to help students gain knowledge in theoretical aspects and apply the same to performance. Rasikas can also utilize the lecture to deepen their appreciation of those aspects of Carnatic theory that are generally applied in the concert performance scene.
    • Raga identification techniques and methods: Raga identification is an exciting activity for many a Carnatic student and rasika! How are some listeners and music students are able to identify ragas instantly while many others struggle? This segment attempts to demystify the raga identification process through exercises, practical examples, tips and techniques. Audio samples will be used to enhance audience experience and understanding.
Vidya Subramanian Academy welcomes students of all ages, learning levels and locations. Vidya and her team of talented teachers offer Carnatic Classical and Indian devotional music lessons in a student focused environment. Wonderful! This is a great service. If you can post a list of movie songs it would be awesome.
Another method could be to listen to tiruppavai tape by MLV daily. That gives an awesome repertoire of 30 ragas.

Thanks for this insightful video! Can you help me identify the ragam in the recent Telugu movie songs “Hrudayama- Major”, “Samajavaragamana - Alavaikunthapuramlo”, “Maate vinaduga - Taxi wala” . Are there any associated Carnatic ragams in fast movie songs like “Naatu Naatu” ? Doing a project to identify root ragams influencing songs in movies. Thank you very much!

I listen to a lot of Carnatic music and enjoy it, but have no basic knowledge. I am 72 years old. Should I bother to learn the basics? What value will it add to my experience of enjoying the music?

At 13:59, is it in general not mandatory that the key prayogams of a raga must be played to demonstrate the signature and feel.of the ragam ?

Thank you soooooo very much for this Video, like you said I have always wanted to learn Carnatic music in a direct way like not going through the real steps of Saregama....& so on. This is a better way to learn . But I also would like to know how to put the Tala ... with recognizing the Raagaas.
Hope to hear from you please guide me thru !
    🙏
Also I wanted to compliment on your good English speaking! You are more compatible for the modern generation.
I had given up learning classical music in depth ,like you said for older people I don’t want to .

Pranamam -- Carnatic music is divine -- Automatically Bhakthi comes unfolding - Carnatic music is rich in SAAHITYA also , Guru Thyagaraja all krithis show his conversion with Lord Rama. Even when SRINGARA rasa is being depicted in some raaga that also comes from BHAKTHI only may be towards BHAGWAN SRIKRISHNA. Swaras are building blocks -- But that building is House / school/ Government office / or hospital is where the essence lies -- The Carnatic Music artist are not builders they are more of dweller of these composition and hence the feeling comes through the singing set to appropriate raga -- BHAAVA is too important -- I feel - Hope I am right.

There are many non-Tamil speakers (including people from non-Indian background) looking to learn about Carnatic music. I appreciate your love for Tamil but the goal here is to reach our Carnatic music to worldwide audience. The lec-dem was held in Bangalore where many members of the audience were unfamiliar with Tamil. While speaking in our mother tongue is always a matter of pride, I would like to highlight that when using the internet for wider reach, an English format helps draw the attention of a wider audience. The focus here is on disseminating musical knowledge.
