Cucumbers are so much fun to grow. We had some plants in the kitchen window, then realized they weren't partenocarp (they needed pollination) so we put them outside. In two weeks time they were taller than me and you can almost see the fruits grow, so fast.
I’ve been wanting to try this for so long. I considered an Aerogarden for quite some time but I’m hesitant because of the limited space, even with the insane one that costs thousands of dollars. lol This video gave me the push to start some hydroponic tomatoes so thank you Khang!
Aerogarden is how i started, and i still use but moved on to better. you will outgrow it very fast, theyre actually smaller then they let on (9 pod systems give u like... 3 - 4 plants and the rest are spacers) plant height, even with thier own pods gets too big, its a PITA...
I've just transferred my tiny plants to my kratky bucket under the light in my tent 😁 good to see time scale on when they start to produce to consumption.
Amazing how fast those cucumbers set fruit! I was wondering if you were hand pollinating. Now I know that it's the variety of cucumber. I will have to get some of those.
fantastic! Im trying the Kratky method out this spring. I think I should try to get cukes going too. Mind blowing how much quicker they grow in hydroponics as opposed to soil. Im using the masterblend. Cheers.
Informative as always..,thanks for that...your videos are always well produced. Got the idea of overwintering peppers from your vids last year..,had a HUGE success with that this year..thx for the idea!
I like the idea of spiraling the plant up. It's just like the do it in large greenhouses, just in a spiral instead of just left to right :-) You can refill kratky style growings, too. You start at the level of the net cups as usual and use a float valve to refill the water level to about 50% of the tank. Dr. Kratky does this, too. So you don't necessarily need an air stone.
What light cycle do you have for these cucumbers? Something like 12 hours on, 12 off? And does the light cycle stay the same for the entire grow or do you change it for flowering stage, etc?
This video came right on time for me. I have never been successful with cucumbers. I always end up killing the plant or getting only male flowers. I just started a plant 2 weeks ago and put it in my kratky setup. It is my first soil less cuke and it seems to be doing well. I'm hoping to have something to show soon.
it could be that your cucumber variety is monoecious. These types produces only male flowers for 2-3 weeks before female flowers will show. Try getting parthenocarpic, or gynoecious varieites. These produce mostly female, and very early.
Can I ask - at the beginning, when you are just starting with the little seedlings - do u put them on a sunny window ledge? Do they need a hydroponic light? I cant see one in your video, just wondered where you put them?
Hi! Thanks for the great video! I am growing in 5 gallon buckets. I started without the air pump but just added as one started not doing so well. What do you mean you are not adding PH? Is that not established with the nutrients - so you would have to add more as you grow more cucumbers? I am completely new to this, so I have to ask. Also, how warm do you keep them? Thank you!!
Jesus Christ those things are fast! Not only the vegetative growth but how fast the fruits pop up and grow to harvest ready size. And the root system! Look at those beautiful, white and plentiful roots!!
He mentioned it was a smaller type and I grow one called "muncher" it looks almost exactly like this. Its burpless and while not seedless if picked young they are almost seedless. Hope you don't mind me answering 🙂 I bought 2 types of Asian long skinny burpless type cucumbers. One dark green and one white. I cant wait to try them. Maybe not in the house but with this tutorial maybe I will lol
@@HS-hr5wp I think the type hes growing is a self pollinating type that makes lots of fruit. But I wouldn't be surprised if you had to hand pollinate. I've seen someone grow potatoes in hydro. They grow down and not up though. There are small villages that survive on potatoes alone for weeks at a time. They fill up their little huts with potatoes for winter.
Random question: For hydroponic Nutrients, I have a 27 gallon tote using 5 gallon amount of filtered water Irrigation system, Currently amount of nutrients Formula is 12.24g master blend and 12.24g Calcium nitrate and Epson salt 6.24g, I herd Nutrients only last 7-14 days indoor, my question is can I reuse the same water and keep adding nutrients!? Or do I have to drain the filtered water out and place new fresh filtered water and start the process again?
Hi hopefully getting into hydroponic growing over the winter on my enclosed front porch. These cucumbers look delicious! If they’re seedless, do you have to keep buying seats? I only ask to know how many to purchase at a time
Hey Khang just wanted to point out an error I found with the vid, with gynoecious varieties you need a seperate monoecious variety to actually pollinate, what your growing is a Parthenocarpic variety.
Hi I have a question. After you set it up with water and nutrients… how long after do you have to put more nutrients? Every couple weeks? And when do u add more water? I’m kinda confused. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you for sharing. I have a quick question. You said the lights go on and off on their own without you having to interfere with them. Do you have the air flow in the container also set to go on and off, or does this stay on all the time? Thank you.
I have a timer and it runs for 10 hrs per day. This light also has an internal timer you can set. I have a fan running to cool the light because summer here in really hot in my garage.
@@KhangStarr Thank you for replying. It was actually the air flow in the water I was curious about. Is the pump on all the time or on a timer too? Thanks
@@dianegriffen2756 for systems like these there is never a need for the air pump to be turned off, let it run continuously to always oxygenate the water :-)
I have been growing cucumbers for a long time now in the hydro but no fruit comes ! Only flowers. Come and then die off . I’m wondering if I’m doing something wrong .
Very interesting! I'm in a colder northern area so likely need a heat source. I wondered what temperature is needed to be maintained for growth? Also, is there an alternative to rock wool that cab be used? Last question, do you have any idea of your energy consumption for your set up? Curious how much this increased your light bill. Thanks! :-)
Honestly, I really didn't look too much at my energy consumption, but there is not a huge increase. Cucumbers are heat loving plants, but you can probably find a variety that may work well in cooler climate. Alternative to rockwool is hydroton or seed plugs like these amzn.to/32OHvou
@@KhangStarr wow that's impressive. I'm learning and considering this method because soil attracts little nats. Is that also an issue with hydroponics/DWC?
It's amazing how such a tiny plant can produce fruit so quickly and is so abundantly!
Can you post a link to the cucumber breed you are using

Do you have to start the seedlings in a mini cup? Or can you begin in the large tub?
What is the wattage, light output, and on time schedule of the grow lamp? Did you need to do manual hand pollinating?
Do you have to hand polinate? Do you have to polinate at all?

How do you grow the little ones in the smaller bottles? Don't you need an air stone or something? I'm trying to start some hydro cucumber now

Hello! Please tell me how much is the EC of your nutrient solution during the fruiting of a cucumber and how much is the EC of water.
Awesome Khang!!
When you add water as it evaporates, do you add more nutrients? Do you add additional nutrients after the initial feeding?
Can we use any fertiliser ? Can I use all purpose or 20/20 ??
Is the nutrients you use good for all veggies?

@@kpratt5960 There are a lot of cucumbers that don't need pollinating. These are not self pollinating. that is a different kind.

Super awesome. But the light and algae thing is noleo void when having enough air being pumped into the water.
Absolutely fabulous cukes you have there. Have you had luck growing summer squash? I'm having trouble getting any female flowers.

Nope, these are gynoecious cucumber, they only produce female cucumbers.
