Cadiz Ohio Ca--dis Ohio is the hometown of Clark Gable and Steubenville is the hometown of Dean Martin. I did a lot of pipeline work here. My Father was born West of Cadiz on Rout 22 in Londonderry.
@elbob17 My father was born in Londonderry, Ohio, down the road near Freeport on US HWY 22 in 1930, and I also I worked in Cadiz on the pipeline and at Atwood Lake he always pronounced it as Cadiz Cadi(s). That is how I have heard it from the local people. I do have family up there, and they pronounce it as Cadiz Cadi(s).🤷♂️
Oh my! I stumbled onto this video. I lived in Toronto, just north of Steubenville for 25 years. My home was on a bluff on the Ohio River. The river froze only twice in those 25 years. Flooded twice as well. I loved seeing all the familiar places. Even though I live in GA now, the Ohio Valley will always be home in my heart! Thank you so much!

My grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins lived in Steubenville, so I know this place quite well and thanks for taking me back to a place full of memories! As a sidenote- Edward Stanton was Secretary of War during Lincoln's administration was from Steubenville!
Not such a great part of anything now sadly. I'm born and raised Steubenville still there currently and I can say as a person who has watched this town go through many changes this town has absolutely gone by the wayside 😢
I remember when the 4 lane Route 7 was completed. Route 7 used to go through the center of town in each of the towns along the river. It was the beginning of the end for the small river towns. Grew up along the river.
I grew up in Colerain on the part of Rt. 250 that you skipped. My ancestors settled in that part of Ohio starting in 1808. My great grandmother was born in Mt. Pleasant in 1842. Mt. Pleasant was a very important station on the Underground Railroad.
Thanks Russ, I was born and raised in Wellsburg WV just south of Weirton. Lived in Toronto just north of Steubenville. Steel production was big in that area. I still get my home town paper, people worked at Weirton Steel for 35 and 40 years. They are passing away now, so much history . Decarlos Pizza is what we all crave after we leave.
My late husband was a children's evangelist, he spoke at Steubenville several times. There's a lovely old church there. Thank you so much for the Memories. It was nice to see Steubenville again.
You was close to Tiltonsville, Ohio (you turn left at the sign which you turned right to Dillonvale ) The Peoples Bank in Tiltonsville was robbed by Pretty Boy Floyd with two other men, back in October 19, 1934. They took $500 dollars.
Dillonvale born and raised, so cool to see. Back in my early years there was so much in our little village. It is and was a safe place to raid you children, and everyone know each other. Thanks again
I loved seeing our area through a "strangers" eyes!!! Thanks for the fun ride. I live near Steubenville. Mt. Pleasant is full of history. It was very active on the underground railroad. A LOT of civil war era history there. Morgan's Raiders rode through Mt. Pleasant and it is said even took hostages while there. The old Quaker Meeting House is there and in very good repair. We did a tour of it with our homeschool kids years ago. I guess, as is everywhere, when you live right here in the middle of it all, I tend to forget how interesting it is. The Old Ft. Steuben Park is really nice. It is a replica of the original Ft. Steuben that was built during Revolutionary war times, and the original land office was there for disbursement of Ohio River Valley land. We also have the "Nutcracker Village" now at Christmastime. YOu can tour the fort, see all the lifesize nutcrackers (so interesting but too involved to describe here). I hope lots of people see your video and come to visit us here in Jefferson County. We welcome you!
It's such a great feeling to know when you start to think of home you can get online and find videos like these. I'm over a year late checking this out. I was born and raised in Steubenville and you traveled through some areas that I know very well. My very good friend and I used to travel to Dillonvale because that was were his mother was from and many of his family members still lived there at the time. Fond memories. Thanks for doing this.

Thanks for highlighting your trip through my home area. I have relatives in Dillonvale and the man who spoke about Patsy's fish wasn't exaggerating. A lot of people drive 15 or 20 miles out ti Dillonvale to get some. A lot of people consider this area part of the 'Rust Belt' and I guess we are. But there's still plenty that goes on to keep it mildly thriving. Lots of history here. Parts of the movie 'The Deer Hunter' were filmed in Steubenville and Follansbee WV just across rhe river. Enjoy the rest of your trip and stay safe.
I live about 20 miles south of Steubenville. I love riding my motorcycle on 150. Nice ride out through there. You are going to head up to 250 and cruise on out to New Phili area. The Ohio River hasn't frozen over since the 50's. It's been dredged out for barge traffic from Pittsburgh on down.
Back in December 2004 my father and I took US23 from Columbus down to Kingsport, TN on our way back to Georgia. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Probably why I now have the desire to travel the country with my wife before it’s too late.
Like the murals, had to rewind to see them again. Country roads, small towns, old buildings, history this is a great country we live in. Thanks Russ. Could you drive thru Minnesota we need the rain.
I've stayed in the Bed & Breakfast seen on the right at 2:58 in the video. Bayberry House, a beautiful old home with excellent decor and service. IMHO, by far the best place to stay in the area.
Hey Russ. Glad to hear that you are here in Ohio. We are also back here in our hometown visiting family. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe out there. >^..^
My Army buddy lives outside Denton, Ohio. I lived in Michigan. I caught the bus from Steubenville to Michigan in December 1967. We were training at Fort Eustis, Virginia and we caught a ride with our buddy from Ohio. We had dropped off another buddy at Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh. I've been back a couple of times. Nice video 👍. Eaglegards...
Russ thank you for taking me home to OHIO I was hoping you would have went to Bellaire although my Mom lived in Steubenville 22 years since I was home. She and Dad are no longer here thank you for the memories I saw their house you drive right by it.
Just found your channel …. and just became a new subscriber. Love your travels! It makes me remember times ( many moons ago,😊)when I used to travel in the car as a child on family vacations with my mom and dad and family. We literally drove everywhere…good times.🥰
@7:00 - West Virginia actually has TWO panhandles: the Northern Panhandle, where you are in Steubenville (sandwiched between Pennsylvania and Ohio), and the Eastern Panhandle, which is sandwiched between Maryland and Virginia.
Russ, When you visited Dillionvale I noticed that like in most small towns the name and photo of the towns veterans are displayed on the telephone poles. Usually they are displayed between Memorial Day and July 4th along with American Flags. That is Americana for you!
Born and raised here, yes it's not like it use to be. But it's still home and I'm going to stay home. If people would stop moving away .. or at least bring back something they have learned from there travel to add a new twist to the area. Everyone just gives up and bails. But there's never going to be any place like home.
Somewhere along the way, very close to the courthouse is Clark Gable's childhood home, it' now a sit-down restruant. Don't have a clue where Dean Martin' home is. At one time, Patsy's in Dillonville, had the best fish in all of Ohio, I live in Canton, and when I was a kid ,my dad used to drive us(the family) down to Patsy's on Friday for all the perch you could eat.. Patsy's got so popular you had to have reservations 3 hours in advance
Mt. Pleasant is one of the prettiest little towns around here. It's known for a Quaker Meeting House, and the Underground Railroad runs through it. Cadiz is a conglomerate of service to agriculture folks, miners, and former mill workers. All the steel mills tgat you saw around Steubenville, have been shut down for quite sometime. Parts of the movie, 'The Deer Hunter', were shot in Follansbee, WV, right across the river from where you were. Route 7 runs all the way South to Marietta, Oh and that's a beautiful drive as well. When you get up around New Philadelphia, you're almost in Amish Country. If you travel through Wooster, you're truly in Amish Country. SugarCreek, which is right around Wooster , has a great many Amish businesses that sell everything from handmade quilts to the best swiss cheeses and sauseges you'll find anywhere. The Amish also run several restaurants there and the food is out of this world. Oh, and the gentleman who mentioned Patsy's restaurant in Dillonvale, and how good the fish was, is not exaggerating. We used to make the trip out there frequently to get some.
We were just there 1 week ago. There is a Custer memorial about 15 miles north of Cadiz in the crossroad town of Rumley. It was his birthplace. There is a bronze statue of Custer that was placed back in 1931. Cool area, thanks for sharing.
Forgot to tell you. On the western side of West Virginia around Charleston and Huntington, they were renowned for glass factories. Carnival glass, blown glass, the good stuff. 👍
Also in Williamstown West Virginia right across the river from Marietta Ohio. Was the Fenton Art Glass Factory. Sadly the company went out of business and the factory was torn down.
I live in Ohio along the Ohio River. We like to cross the river and go down Rt 2 to Huntington. We are about an hour away. My husband worked in Huntington before he retired a year ago. We are in Gallipolis, Ohio.
@@caroldixon7796I love Fenton glass pieces. I have a few. I have a green vase that was my mom's. I'm 68 and she had it since I was a little girl as far back as I can remember. I will pass it all on to my daughter and granddaughters.❤
Welcome to Ohio Russ If you’re headed to new Philadelphia just go a little further to Amish country for yummy food. Great fry pies, cheese and chicken!
I HAVE REALLY ENJOYED THESE EAST COAST AREA VIDEOS. THEY ARE PLACES MY FAMILY ORIGINATED FROM BEFORE MOVING WEST THROUGH OHIO AND IOWA INTO THE DAKOTAS BEFORE ENDING UP IN MONTANA AND WASHINGTON STATE. PROBABLY WILL BE THE ONLY CHANCE I GET TO SEE SOME OF THE PLACES THEY MAY HAVE BEEN.
My mom grew up in Martins Ferry, just down the river from Steubenville and across from Wheeling WV. This was steel mill country back in the 50s and early 60s from Youngstown on down the river. I think Martins Ferry/Wheeling are much more picturesque than Steubenville. I think Lou "The Toe" Groza, HOF NFL kicker, was from Steubenville.
@@johnehmer2747 my mom’s maiden name was Myers. She had two siblings. All graduated in the mid to late 30s, George, Elsie and Vera. My grandparents lived on Park street just off the the main road when I was a kid. My mom grew up down near the park. I played my first year of little league there in the field by the pool
@@williamschletzer4516 My sister transferred to Mt. Pleasant and graduated there in 1945. I graduated from MFHS in 1957. I was actually born in my grandmother's house on N. 8th near Riverview Cemetery. I left there in 1959 to join USAF.
@@johnehmer2747 I went back about 15 years ago while my mom was still alive and took a photo tour of Martin’s Ferry and wheeling. An aunt and uncle lived in Wheeling and we went there often when I went there as a kid. Took pictures of the houses in the park and her old school at the bend in the road where the main road takes a 90° left turn and heads down towards the crossing to Wheeling Island. Also went up to the cemetery and found my grandparents graves. I missed Iseley’s (probably spelled that wrong) and the movie theater and the Tid Bit. I used to buy comics there when I was a kid and I think there was a news stand up around the corner that had a lot of comics too. My uncle was a florist in downtown Wheeling. I am a Minnesota boy but I have so many memories of Martins Ferry
Thanks for your traveling videos. Watch and love them all. Toronto is famous for its actor Robert Urich and Clark Hinkle. Steubenville known as Little Italy as mobs once kept things in order. Dean Martin festival as Deno was born in Steubenville. Lots of oil and gas fracking mining. Old area with tons of History. You went through Cadiz, home of Clark Gable.
Started watching your channel about a month ago when your where in virginia never thought you be going through my town of Cadiz ,Oh how cool ...I have a real small channel mostly hiking ,camping, waterfalls etc....Safe travels friend
I love downtowns but it is such a shame that they have become so vacant with most of the stores moving to malls. I'm old enough to remember when downtown America was crowded and thriving as the center of business and entertainment.
I live in Steubenville, Ohio and there's one thing you may not have known is famous singer/actor Dean Martin was born and raised in Steubenville. There's a festival each year here in his honor and his daughter is the Grand Marshall and hostess

Awesome video Russ!!
Thanks!
Beautiful😍😍
Hey never too old to learn geography, right ? Really enjoying your trip !
I also have friends in Akron-Canton area.
Another great video Russ, going places and showing things others usually don't, travel safe.
You drove right passed my house when you went south on 7 . Would love to give you a tour of the area if you come back through
Cadiz courthouse is Harrison county Ohio, built 1893 Russ,
Good stuff, stay safe.
I was born in Martins Ferry. My sister went to high school with Lou Groza in Martins Ferry.
My Dad is from Martins Ferry too!
What a difference a year can make! You are covering some major ground :-)
Yes indeed!
Enjoying the ride❤️👍
Great videos Russ!! I'm in Lakeside Marblehead up between Toledo and Cleveland. We have a Bay Bridge by Sandusky
Very cool!
@@rvertv I'm enjoying your road trip! See you in Hot AZ next winter!
Hi Russ!!!! Enjoying all your videos!! I am fom Cincinnati Ohio area!! Hope u enjoyed your trip thru Ohio! Safe travels to you! 😊💙
We have an old 1700’s Fort Steubenville and a museum
Started watching your channel about a month ago when your where in virginia never thought you be going through my town of Cadiz ,Oh how cool ...I have a real small channel mostly hiking ,camping, waterfalls etc....Safe travels friend
We don’t see anything this green in California we are starving for any rain here it’s so dry it’s nice to see the rain 🌦
I live right where this video begins. It rained yesterday and today. Much needed as our lawn was just about dead
I love downtowns but it is such a shame that they have become so vacant with most of the stores moving to malls. I'm old enough to remember when downtown America was crowded and thriving as the center of business and entertainment.
Thanks for Sharing!
My pleasure!
My Diocese is based here. Our Bishop lives in Steubenville. From Steubenville to Ironton streches our Dioicese.
Ah I know that road well in beginning. I cut on to 22 across W VA and then into PA to avoid the Turnpikes.
Send the rain to Arizona. Record 116 degrees today.
Steubenville is the hometown of Dean Martin.
And Tracy Lords
You is miss the fort. , one street down .
And Fred from I love lucy!
Russ, I’m in a KOA campground in Streetsboro Ohio and will be here until Saturday morning. I sure would like to meet you someday.
I don't know if you have, but you should drive the Great River Road. It traces the Mississippi river path from north to south.
That would make a great road trip.
New Philly is west of Steub. Akron/Canton is north.
Matt Fradd, 'Pints with Aquinas '. Steubenville ❤
