This is so close to, and more affordable than my Martin 000-17SMH (?) I can’t remember the exact model designation, but it is not an all mahogany guitar. It LOOKS like it is, but it’s a Sitka spruce top, on mahogany b/s. The top is gloss finished, the rest of the guitar is satin, open pore, super light finish. 12 fret, slot head, 1 3/4” nut, wide spacing at the saddle. It’s far from my most expensive Martin, or my most expensive guitar, at all. It cost me under $2k Canadian, back in 2013/14. What it is, though, is my most “picked up and played” guitar in my collection of 14 exceptional acoustics - Martins, Guilds and Gretsch’s - not a Gibby in my collection, anymore. I totally lost faith in them 10 - 15 yrs ago. I could NOT get a properly finished guitar from them! I sent a Les Paul custom back to them 3 times! And ended up not buying it! I’m a Tele guy for electrics, and have little regard for overly fussy guitars, re: tuning issues and adjustments, set ups and broken strings, etc.

      000-17SM was a Sitka-topped guitar.

I have one that I bought from Maury's about eight or nine years ago. It's gotten to where it really sings! I recently changed the strings over to D'Addario 9b's and the action is so easy. I love it!

My favorite Martin model! I have a custom nitro finished one and every time I pull her out of the case and strum that first chord I'm in heaven. The only other Martin on my wish list would be a 12 fret 0000-18 or M-18

Hi, I'm always confused about this line... are the fifteens nitro finished or not? I mean the standard 15 models, that are available in the stores... Or does the nitro start only at the 18 line?

I do a lot of flat picking and I found light gage strings a bit thin in the treble. I changed to medium gage strings and it really sings in open D tuning. I love the sound of the SM15. I think the slotted head stock makes a significant difference.

I’ve been a Taylor guy in fact I own two. This cost as much as a Mexican made lament 200 series Taylor. It’s a classic guitar with a rich warm tone I love Taylor but this time out I’m going for the Martin

If only martin can make a guitar with a neck like the taylors

awesome!!!! thank you for posting this, I've played these, my impression was it had more mojo than the 15m, and it seemed louder when I compared it, I was lucky enough to have the gamut in stock at local music store at one point, the 00-15m 000-15m 000-15sm D15m and even the 00-15e retro (short scale with ebony board as apposed to long scale. I can tell you honestly I liked the 00-15m & e retro, & the sm the best, though i'd be happy with either.

The neck is so easy to play for me! But I'm not sure what's different about it. Martin's website doesn't list any spec as being different from the standard 000 size

I put medium elixirs on mine and it looks like too much tension on the body, it bows in a little and the guitar is new. The high e is only a 12 or 13..
