Can you explain the ending - the boy picture had the alien hand in it. In the beginning I believed momma, but when she died I thought maybe she suffered from paranoia.
However, when the little girl came along the boy ran after her and stated he knew she was real leading him to become possessed.

Excellent question. The photo at the end was one thing had me and about 12 other reviewers scratching our heads after the screening because it seemed to invalidate most of the explanations that most of us came up with... but what I settled on is that the film always showed us the "reality" that each character was seeing as they saw it. I think that photo was meant to represent what he was seeing when he took the photo (as he sat watching the fire burn), and at that time he was seeing the white snake skin creature touching his shoulder. So, this was the film's way of showing us that the "evil" had corrupted him and made him do it.
Yeah, the girl at the end was real, and I think he knew that too, which is why he ran after her... but I think she got away and he got "infected" going after her.
You know, you are making me think of something.... if he didn't get infected and set the house on fire, the helicopter might not have come for them and they would have starved or worse if they weren't rescued. So, in a way, the evil sort of saved their lives.

Explain the monster's hand on the Polaroid picture? And the monster getting revealed underneath mom's skin. The whole plot feels confusing and uncertain. Uncertainty is not good in any genre of storytelling.

The photo at the end was one thing that was a bit odd. I really thought about that one and it invalidated a lot of different explanations, but what I settled on is that the film always showed us the "reality" that each character was seeing as they saw it. I think that photo was meant to represent what the boy was seeing when he took the photo (as he sat watching the fire burn), and at that time he was seeing the white snake skin creature touching his shoulder. What did you think? I'd love to know what you thought of the photo. I love that you noticed it. A lot of people who I talked to didn't notice it for some reason. 🙂

@@michaelbigs3380 hahaha! I totally love your comment and I feel your pain on that.
So, there are no monsters. It's all in her head. However, what the film does exceptionally well is to visualize her mental illness by showing us the monsters that she sees and hears because they are absolutely 100% real to her, and because of that she acts like they are real....and the fact that the film achieves the ability to turn a mental monster into something that actively alters the way a person acts and reacts in the real world is fascinating. They give you exactly what you expect, but not in the way that you expect to see it - and I love that kind of movie.
But be warned there are 1-2 moments when the effects are a little ham handed, but other than that, it's good psychological horror fun.

‘Misinformation’ was mentioned way too much throughout this video and turned me off quickly. It’s more complicated than that because the ‘misinformation’ you refer to endlessly here is actually the mother’s reality.

That's a completely fair criticism. You're probably right about my over use of the word. Thanks for pointing that out. You also mention exactly the things I was trying to get at ... that her reality was real to her and that it was informed by the things she thought she saw, experienced, and knew - believing those things to be real. So, in a way, our realities are formed by the information we think is real. I thought that idea was so interesting in the film... which is why I likely over used that term. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll try to keep an eye out for that kind of thing in the future.
What did you think of the film? Did you like it?
