      Yes! Soooo many kids films are plasticy nah-nah-nah garbage that has me wondering what kind of adult would think a kid would like the film. So, when I saw Harold and the Purple Crayon, I was pleasantly surprised. It had that sense of joy to it that so many kids films today seem to be lacking. Thanks for the comment.

    I haven’t dealt with sexual violence. But I have dealt with everything else. From betrayal of family to homelessness. This movie felt more real than most that deal with rape or horror because it wasn’t just a period piece or comedic piece that just blew off the rape scenes as something that could have been removed from the movie. Like, “ it ends with us,” the movie is centered around the abuse. But unlike “it ends with us,” it’s not just a one time thing by your husband. The fact that anyone can do this to you, including your boyfriend’s therapist was so disturbing. In the end, the therapist was the only who knew the truth of what had been done. Well, besides the MC. Maybe that’s why this movie got me, because I’m like what is the therapist going to do next? It really showed what a hoax therapy is in dealing with these kinds of things.

    • @ErinUnderwood
      @ErinUnderwood วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I agree. There was something insidious in how the film was written and produced that made it feel so much more real than other films that tackle similar topics. The fact that the therapist is part of the story in such an unsettling way is also one of the things that erodes any feeling of safety in the film. Thanks for making that point! I haven't yet seen "It Ends With Us," but there are so many people talking about it that I kind of feel like I need to watch it.

    Buuut, the Company never abandoned the station. Everyone on it got killed! And so it drifted around dead in space.

    • @ErinUnderwood
      @ErinUnderwood 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      True, but remember, before everyone died, they would have been sending regular reports back to the home office. The position of the space station would have been recorded. Then, using AI and math, the company could have figured out potential trajectories based upon last known coordinates, time, gravity, and velocity. If they can build life-like androids, the science to map potential coordinates for a lost station would not be difficult, and with such an expensive investment going dark, I don't think the company would have not investigated.

    • @TueSorensen
      @TueSorensen 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ErinUnderwood But what if it was a top-secret, classified project that no one else knew about? Well, in any case, you certainly have a point, because once the station powered back up, it would have surely become a beacon of communication and distress signals and have been instantly detected by the authorities on the planet below.

    • @ErinUnderwood
      @ErinUnderwood วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TueSorensen You have a good point too. It's funny that either way you look at it, it could have easily been resolved if the company showed up at some point....even if it was to watch the station blow up in the final scene as Rain and Andy escape.

      Alien! Romul-Kiss-My-Ass.. WTF! No disrespect to the channel but seriously! This was rushed and not character fleshed out enough to give us the full impact of what's about to unfold. Not to mention the disregard to the cannon on certain scenes EG: Chestburster to Adult in 10 minutes WTF! As for the ending we got a resurrection flashback seriously!!!

    • @ErinUnderwood
      @ErinUnderwood 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@TheNITRO68 Yep, these were some of the issues that I talk about in this review as well. There were a number of other issues that I could have brought up, but I felt like the video was already going onto the longish side of things. Still, they kept the action moving almost from the start of the film, which I think did a decent job of keeping people from really thinking about the flaws while they were in act of watching the film. So, lots of people are likely to enjoy the wild ride ... until they actually start thinking about the film after the fact. For me, the super fast gestation rate for the aliens is a big miss with the film. I was secretly hoping that Bad-Andy would just airlock everyone and blow everything up. BUT then I started thinking that even that wouldn't "kill" the alien. It would just distribute it's little organic bits throughout the rings to be discovered by some human later. Thanks for the comment. This is one of those films that while I really enjoyed the "action," the best parts of the movie are in the flaws that we get to talk about here in the comments.

      @ErinUnderwood Going to keep this simple. Act One: Good Act Two: OK Act three: “what a PoS” My question is when did the xenomorph go from the “perfect organism” in Alien as stated by Ash in the original to basically “canon fodder” in Romulus??……… 🤨 Ash also said in the original "I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality". Considering that 3 (maybe 4 since I may have missed one considering I was LOLing at that time) other lines in Romulus were “taken” directly from either Alien or Aliens……. Was a big mistake…… my biggest issue was there were too many scenes that were directly taken from Alien or Aliens…….. best example: Ripley and Newt in the infirmary with face huggers…….. Romulus, the same just a water……… 🤨

    • @ErinUnderwood
      @ErinUnderwood 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@bkh8528 Dear god... when that particular line was said, I think I sank into my seat at least three inches from depression.... It's little things like that which change a movie from moments of homage to falling over itself to provide unwanted fan service. I think they had some interesting and exciting ideas, especially up front, but then they decided to ramp things up at the end... so rather than ending at the natural ending point, which would have been FINE... they strung it out another 30 minutes with an ending that was more of an act of jumping the shark than delivering something clever and new.

    • @bkh8528
      @bkh8528 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ErinUnderwood Couldn’t agree more and I feel your review was spot on. I feel the movie had it’s moments but its failings which were far worse then it’s good moments. It was a serviceable movie that could’ve been a lot better (like you suggested) I thought the cast overall was fine but how they were portrayed was not, I saw a bunch of 20something year old miners that looked like a bunch of 20something year old influencers as apposed to Alien where I was seeing a bunch of “grizzlied” “space truckers” or Aliens were I’m seeing a bunch of “hardened marines”. Certain characters becoming “badass” didn’t make sense logically speaking, i mean Ellen Ripley didn’t become “badass” til the end of Aliens when she went to rescue Newt….. 😉 Honestly this movie felt a lot like playing a video game……. Move from one fetch quest to another til you fight the big boss……. And all the while toss out some “fan service” here and there to try to keep interest up……… It had potential (sure, never could’ve been an Alien or Aliens) but could’ve been in the same category but sadly it’s probably going to be in the category of Alien 3 or Prometheus maybe a 5/10 possibly a 6 though only because of its visual appearance……….

    Great review. I watched it today and had a lot of the same issues as you. I actually thought a better ending would have been for Rain to die, and Andy to be the sole survivor. That would have made a change from the tired formula in these movies of the female protagonist surviving along with the person/cat they go back into the station/ship/facility for. This would have also been a reversal of what she was planning to do at the beginning of the film - fly away leaving her brother behind.

    This film was clearly greenlit by people that think a popular game equals a popular movie. By adapting a game they immediately tie their hands into whatever premise the game uses to support the gameplay, which is classically 'bad' in gaming. Writers need the freedom to go where the story wants to go and nobody is playing Doom for a compelling story!

      Oh. My. God. YES. My grad school thesis was actually on the art of adaptation, and it's absolutely wild how many studios just green light things because they see a built in audience without any real understanding of how to adapt the story into something that makes sense within the film industry. I think Borderlands falls into that category.

    When the first thing that Disney did was cancel the EU /Clone Wars I knew that this Disney ownership was going to be a difficult one to adjust to. It was a terrible way to thank the fans in keeping this franchise alive for so long. Especially in the time between trilogies. And its been a rocky road ever since. I'm just tired of having my intelligence and ability to critically analyse what they put out reduced to comments like "You are taking it too seriously, SW has always been cheesy" or "You look for things to hate, that's why you dont like it." I too saw SW in the summer of '77 and was blown away by the story, lore, tech, characters and music, as well as all the toys and the Marvel Comic series. SW is in my blood, I identify as Gen-X(Wing)! But lately, I no longer read the novels or comics and I can count on one hand how many movies/shows I thought were intelligently written. So I guess us fans ARE the problem. Those with discerning taste anyhow because we are not easily placated with shiny lightsabers and nothing burger stories or cameos that are superfluous to the story.

      You get at one of the things that I think Disney doesn't know how to do: write great, smart, cheesy science fiction. It's like they can't seem to walk and chew bubblegum at the same time when it comes to Star Wars. I think the only reason that Deadpool & Wolverine was good was because Marvel had so much control. If Disney could have tamed it down, it would have been awful.... like The Acolyte... Sigh.

    The multiverse was going to be a thing until Secret Wars regardless. RDJ was coming to back and cameo regardless. What this move signifies especially by the boats loads of money they are paying the Russos is they actually want this to be good. Because they could have had a cameo from RDJ in Avengers 5 with a no namer playing Doom, and whoever directing and it would have still did $2 Billion at the Box Office. But this shows they care about the product, and while many don’t understand why and where they are going with this. I and many others see the vision and are confident people are going to love it. And Doom is here actually to do away with the multiverse that is why they are rushing him in, he will destroy it. Because the MCU is stuck between generations in a way, so what they are going to do is collapse and consolidate it down to start fresh but to do that, they will be going out on about a 3 movie long saga starting in Fantastic 4: First Steps.

Superhero films (which I love dearly) have this tendency to keep ramping the stakes up and up and up to this insane levels that make it harder and harder to achieve good storytelling. So, all that is to say, thank you. Thank you for giving me hope. Disclaimer, I don’t like fan fiction and it usually comes off exactly how Leslie’s The Acolyte turned out, but this was really a tremendous job. I saw all the patches people tried doing to this show and this was far and away the most elegant one. With that said I would say they still need to keep OSHA leaving with Qimir and Mae being found because of the memory wipe. And also since you mentioned the great idea of Sol telling both girls the truth, I think it in the moment it should have been Mae who actually tried defending Sol because it was after all her who was turning into a smoke plume, and the idea that somebody actually did care enough to try and save her would have struck a nerve and changed her mind. Because another thing they did wrong is on the bridge they should have made Mae actively try and resists Sol help and since she has some force sensitivity it would have made sense, her saying like get off me and pushing herself away, so he just decides to grab OSHA. Overall great job.

      Yeah, I agree. There were a few different ways they could have handled Osha and Mae to land in the same place. What I really like about your suggestion is the idea of having Sol actually show her (Mae) he cares and how that would impact her since a lot of time anger is the external form of internal pain and sadness. That would have been a nice solution. Qimir is actually my favorite character in the show, and what I love about your suggestion is that it would give Osha a really solid reason to leave with Qimir. It's obvious he is lonely (and I don't mean in a sexual way like so many other people say). He misses the bond of master and padawan, and that loss scarred him as much as the marks on his back... and I did see the connection he felt with Osha, which I think had as much to do with her time with the Jedi as her potential to be his apprentice (or partner). I would have been happy with these solutions that you made. Sadly, the best solutions that I have seen suggested (like yours as well as mine) seem to all stem from Sol telling both girls the truth, and it's unfortunate that Headland didn't choose that path because she could have ended exactly in the same spot with the season while producing a much more compelling story.

    A phenomenally well done film. I loved it. Marvel didn't write the script, and neither did Disney, the film was scripted by Ryan Reynolds, with Shawn Levy the director, and Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick and Zeb Wells. The script did go by Disney, but it doesn't sound like they got involved much, not even objecting to the Disney jokes. Omg!!! Indeed, while Madonna gave two notes, which improved the film, I am not sure the monolith of Disney made or broke this film, I credit the story, actors and direction. That came from the team. Sure, Disney let them. There is even a joke about a Marvel "Low Point" and the miss after miss, it's hilarious, mature self depreciation, irreverential brilliance and so fun. Yet the aspects we liked, Deadpool encountering all the Wolverines, and just Wolverine being back ... It's brilliantly done, so irreverent and I loved it, but won't work without a multiverse. The story pivots on it. The film was superb, so many amazing comic book references. Damn, the cover of X-Men 251, how awesome was that, and so many film and comic aspects and references and all the cameos. But it's hugely popular, so it won't be labeled fan service, it will be call backs and clever. Publishers have books that bomb, but we don't blame the publisher, Marvel cancel comics, sure but writers make it awesome, and sometimes writers don't hit the mark for everyone. I think that needs more reflection than seeking new writers, or blaming Disney. Likewise, praise here for the big team that made this film superb.

    • @ErinUnderwood

      I loved this film. I had been looking forward to it for so long, and I was delighted that it worked so well. I also think Ryan Reynolds is a power in the film industry and he has a very strong and proven track history... and he REALLY understand the market, the fans, and the stories. The result of having creators who are fans and really "get" the story they are telling, you automatically up level the quality of the story. I laughed so hard during certain moments, and I was actually wondering what you would think. I thought you would love it too, and I am so glad you did. I think the point you make about Marvel's and Disney's involvement in the script, production, and direction is actually right in line with the frustrations that I have been having with Disney regarding The Acolyte and some of the other Marvel films. In this case, they trusted the writers of the film and signed off on it without interference. Alternatively, with The Acolyte, Kathleen Kennedy did shoot down the original script from Leslye Headland and she approved the one that got produced. (I am curious about that original draft.) It is the job of the studio (as well as the publisher) to approve, edit, green light, produce, market, etc the products that they produce. Responsibility rolls upward on these things. The biggest difference between films and books is that when the book bombs, the book just gets dumped - often along with the author (who sometimes gets stuck having to payback an advance, but this doesn't happen with film). Most books don't have global audiences that are clamoring for the book. Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, etc are at the level. There is also a natural difference in audience size and expectations. If GRRM bombs on his next GOT book, the internet will explode.... but I don't expect that to happen because he's a great writer and he trusts his editor and his publisher is actively protecting that IP.

    Why??? There are so many talented young actors that could take this roll and they are going to blow the budget paying Robert Downey Jr. And my main problem is they want to start their new universe with RDJ. He is 59 years old. Is he going to want to do this in 10 years when he is 69 and beyond. It will be like when they dragged the corpse of Harrison Ford into a new Indiana Jones movie (only good part was when he was played by a body double and they de-aged his face) No shade on the actors but I'm 59 and I have nether the urge or the energy to do stunts at my current age than would when I was 25. This is my same argument with casting Pedro Pascal in Fantastic Four. You want this to be a franchise film just like Doctor Doom. But these things franchises can take 10 years or more to complete.... Ironman to Endgame was 11 years from first release to last movie release. When this new series ends RDJ will be 70 ! It will be.... Just throw Doctor Doom in a wheel chair or give him a walker right from the start for continuity. This is just to grab publicity. I know a lot of fans love him and so do I. But here is the reality RDJ salary is going to be $80 million per movie. He will only work with the Russo Brothers who want 90 million to direct this project. (According to trade mags) That is a budget of $170 Million before a single frame or script. That is crazy. This means your making a $300 to $350 million movie. Just looked what happened to Indiana Jones with such a large budget. The lower the budget the easier it is to get a hit profitable movie. If this is not a profitable movie like Antman Quantumania, The Marvels or the Eternals it is going to continue Marvels downward spiral. It is also time to kill this whole multiverse concept. It is not popular. It means there are no stakes. "Ironman dies a valiant heartfelt death".... no worries we will just bring him back through the multiverse. As I am also a fan, I am mad that death no longer matters. Just like Starwars when Lightsabers no longer are fatal. They are cheating instead of writing good stories. Then see above about the whole age thing. And Final thought.... He was your favourite character.... he will be a new character. The Doctor Doom that I know is nothing like Ironman. While I basically agree with the points which you bring up, I have my doubts that this would ever happen inside this Dismay corporation of today and with Headland as showrunner. First three main reasons, Headland COULD NOT fix it: - She has no talent - she does only care about her messaging, not Star Wars - with no talents except the actor of Saul (Sol?) at the set, she has nothing to make this work -- including the writers. And last, one reason why she WOULD NOT fix it: After all I have seen from this show, the interviews with Headland and some of the actors, I am convinced, that Headland would not fix this show, particularly not in the direction you did point. In one interview Hadland even said, that the death of Sol was that way, because she wanted to show, that women have to get rid of "benign sexism". What is that? It is the "over-caring" of parents or similar people about grown up women. Basically those flaws which you indicated are the main points that Headland wants to make. She rejects normal family behavior. She rejects civilized behavior of people in favor of doing what "feels right" and what does fit her agenda. She adheres obviously to a very militant form of emancipation -- that is her message and that is all about "Power" and good and evil are just matters of perspective. So, the morale mess of the show is not by incident, but it is fully intended.

    • @ErinUnderwood
      @ErinUnderwood 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've been thinking about your mention of the "benign sexism" and I find that such a strange comment for Headland (or anyone) to make. I think it's natural for people to want to help other people and to care for other people in ways that have nothing to do with sex, sexuality, or gender.... It's human and I think it's probably the most basic aspect of being human - to care for others. If we have to stop caring for people based on the fact that their gender doesn't align with our own, how is that going to impact our humanity? ... but I am getting way too philosophical here. I guess what I am trying to say is that I would just love natural and organic human emotions and reactions in my stories, and Sol's did not feel natural to who he was as a character (at least who he was presented to us to be as a character, which is why those choices didn't work).

The result is the same: A convoluted messaging, that is the complete opposite for what Star Wars once did stand for.

    I’m on your side, Erin, for two reasons. First, as you say, this decision betrays a shocking lack of imagination had originality, and a fear of risk. Successful art depends on risk, and the decisions made by accountants and marketing managers are usually not good for art. “Give the kids what they already like“ is a terrible strategy. But it’s also a bad decision for Downey. He is a world-class dramatic actor, and he has lots of things still to accomplish. He’s already owned the superhero performance zone: Chris Reeve and Chris Bale together couldn’t outdo him. He needs to get on with other sorts of work.

      I respectfully disagree and here is why. A lack of imagination would have just been announcing something like Iron Man 4, having RDJ as Doom is a complete curveball that nobody saw coming, so how does that lack imagination exactly? And also yes RDJ is a world class actor who despite those abilities and the frowned upon comic book genre, actually loved playing Tony Stark, loved being in the MCU, and never wanted to be killed off. But when asked to come back, he didn’t want to just portray Tony Stark who is more or less a facsimile of RDJ in real life, he wanted to portray the most complex character in all of Marvel, and in the same universe, to be really show off his acting chops. Because want he wants to do is not just get on with other sorts of work, but he wants to be the first actor to win an Oscar in a comic book movie. Does that make more sense?

It's a bold move, and possibly a catastrophic one for the film, the franchise, and RDJ himself. There are so many terrific actors who could have played this role and gotten audience members excited. I'm delighted that we are getting a Dr Doom story, there is a lot to this character, and so many stories and aspects, it's a rich character, a simple two dimensional villain, he is not and a classic Marvel Villain. Doom and Iron Man have interacted, crossed over, merged even in a wide selection of comics, which speculators are FOMO'ing heavily on. There's lists now, even. I'm not sure which premise the film is going to take, is it a multiverse aspect, or is it putting an actor into a costume and forgetting the previous. It's a bit of a step for me to say it's definitely a multiverse aspect, and then, as a reader who's loved so many aspects of the Multiverse, enjoyed them, especially in the mosr recent Deadpool, to go further and say it's reflective of poor writing, that's way too harsh for me. That's the marvel world. Earth 616 is 42 years old... I'm fascinated to see what Marvel do, but in many respects it's wildly bold, crazy even. There are no shortage of stories. That's for sure, and many of them are superb, just all still comics. Seeking inspiration from comics has gone well so far, and I hope that continues. How RDJ portrays Doom, the angle. Is it played straight. That will be interesting.

      I am so very conflicted about this announcement because I AM very excited about a Doctor Doom movie. I love the idea of branching out to new stories and new characters. If they "have" to go to a new multiverse world, I'm "okay" with it generally speaking. However, do we really need RDJ to be recycled into the role of villain to make it work? Are there no other actors who can pull this off? But more to the point, we saw Iron Man die. We all grieved. We saw Logan die. We all grieved. ... but now we will all be sitting around not feeling that emotional payoff in future films because in the back of our minds we know that if money gets tight, Marvel will just bring that actor back as a featured actor in a film rather than as a little cameo that will warm our hearts. I'm still working through my own thoughts on this, and the fact that I know my thoughts would be excited and happy if a different actor were chosen make it a little more confusing. I do also wonder if it's going to be a bit like V for Vendetta and Hugo Weaving where Doom never takes his mask off. And if he does well we won't see the Robert Downey Jr we know. Is there scope here for there to be an absolutely incredible acting performance which throws us all off and immediately brings us along and draws us into Doom. Or will it be a multiverse fix up. Anyone who watches Doomsday who is 17 or younger won't even have been born when the first Iron Man film came out, sure, End Game will only be 7 years old so we haven't hit that generational length of time where Downey Jr could potentially play a totally different character. Well said. I enjoyed your take on trying to fix the Acolyte..but I also agreed with your decision that Headland isn’t the person to do it. You can just tell that season two would be more of the same convolution ending in Mae or Osha redeeming themselves… But that kind of ending wouldn’t be satisfactory to me. The Jedi have been treated too poorly in season 1. The first killed by a knife - distracted by blocking a knife that would have killed a bystander, a Jedi committing suicide (wtf), a Wookie Jedi being ‘mind- raped’ by the space witches (an expression I heard elsewhere) and then killed not even from behind but while sitting in a chair (wtf) and then finally Soul who is murdered by his adopted daughter figure/padawan and accepting his fate (which is another way of acknowledging his guilt)… The who is good, who is bad was too poorly done for this show to be given a second chance, and you can guess that Disney’s warped take on the real world isn’t going to equate to a palatable outcome for the SW universe (that once was..). Bin it or spin it..? I choose bin it.. :(

      You have helped me to conceptualize a problem that I have been having with the deaths of all of the Jedi in this series. None of the deaths truly felt earned. They were all too easy (which reminds me of Princess Leia telling Han Solo that their escape from the Death Star was too easy). The difference here is that for Han, Leia, and Luke, Vader set up the easy escape so that they could track the Falcon back to the rebel base. There is no realistic reason for why the Jedi's death (from the 4 who confronted the witches plus all of the others who Qimir killed) were so very easy to out maneuver and kill. If "guilt" is the reason the 4 jedi were so easy to kill.... why was it so easy to kill all of the others? When there is no logic to back up the outcomes, it points to a weakness in the cause and effect that pushes the story forward. And I think that gets at Headland's true weakness as a writer and director. Thanks for the comment!

    Great review. I don't know about this film, but you make me want to see it now.

      I was really excited by the film ,but I still went in with low expectations so that I wouldn't be disappointed. When you see it, let me know what you think.

    I have a lot of admiration for this episode. Specifically, about how long and how well Davies was able to disguise that he was mostly just recycling "Turn Left".

    I am at heart a pragmatist , so I very much agree season 1 wasn't perfect but the concept was a good one. Master Sol character he's a good man torchered by event's that got out of hand because of a mistake. No more flashbacks continue with the story from that point forward. Hope isn't an issue with the story it's passion, regret and revenge all paths to the dark side. It might have been better if the sisters were 1 is born as 2, after which one is more aligned to the dark but the other the light but at this point you don't know which. You only find out after the force choke. To say that the Jedi are infallible , nothing gets past them doesn't make sense. No-one foresaw general order 66. Ankins curption to the Sith was also unforseen. Palpatine although not trusted no-one suspects he's a Sith dark lord. It's only when it's too late did the Jedi act. I've deliberately left green evil Jedi as I do think there's a possibility of a twist that could be exploited in season 2. I do think better directions would do wonders for the show. But it should be clear this show is about the Sith or Dark Jedi. Season 2 if it happens should be all out Sith .

      Hmmm ... I like that. It's not about Hope... it's about regret. That's nice! The series is definitely about Dark Jedi or Sith. I think that's spot on, but the direction was a muddy mess. If they had started there, started with Qimir and Mae and let us get to know them a bit more, I think THAT would have solidified the focus for the series. Instead, they quickly shift to the Jedi and we automatically gravitate to them. I think you are right that better direction would have done wonders for the show!

      Green Jedi Lady? She might be!! That would be an interesting, if not unpredictable twist. :-)

    This video is a great demonstration of how Star Wars brings people together from all around the world with all different perspective, united in their hatred/love for the stories.

      Thank you for this comment. I love it. This was exactly how I was feeling when I made this video. I love when people can find ways to connect with each other, especially when they don't always agree about everything. Thank you!!!
