The red came out nice looks great with the dark screws, good to see the strip down those EF's have decent looking bearings, I do the same to strip down but a little bech vice works well to hold the knife, more for the camera work than anything, belly works fine but its not video friendly 😜videoing this stuff aint easy is it 😅Great job love the mods videos....Thanks Rusty👍
I did 3 mods on this night and tried to edit them into 3 separate videos. Each video is pretty long because I did some work on camera. But you are right, the Eafengrows were put together pretty good. Better than I anticipated actually. It would be so much better to have a studio with a camera suspended, lighting and a work bench. As it is in my life, I have a kitchen table with the washer running because the garage is both too full and too cold to be out in. 😂
I believe you. I'm a little hesitant with D2 and steel bearings. I did dye my Rat with Aus8 and washers without taking it apart Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
Pro tip- don't dye in aluminum or cast iron, stainless steel is best keep some black and grey dye on hand so you can add a few drops to darken your dye a shade or two. Test with a white strip of paper and adjust accordingly. For deeper, mote vibrant colors add some vinegar to your dye and keep the water at around 160° for the entire dye process. Also when disassembling or reassembling your knives, put one tool in a vise and hold the knife in one hand while you use the screwdriver. Or, what I use is a finger ratchet type bit hlder and hold it in my palm while holding the knofe in place with a couple of fingers and use my othe hand to work the driver. And, fyi, when you first take your knives apart, try heating them up with a heat gun on low or in boiling water to soften the locktite, it'll save you some broken bits and stripped screws
Excellent tips, I agree with all of them. Thank you for sharing. I do like how this one turned out. Check out my Civivi Wyverns, Sencut Episode and a Civivi Keen Nadder dye jobs. I also like how those came out. Got several dye jobs in planning stages
Turned out sweet! Stubby driver has been working for me to break pivots. And for longer soaks, I thread one wire through both ends of each scale, then bend the wire up 90°. This way they are suspended in the shallow dye horizontaly, and never touch the bottom of the pot.
Thank you for the feedback. You never know how long they are going to soak going in, or do you have a way to figure that out? I agree, I wish I would have bent the wire more the "V" angle became an issue in another mod I did this same night. Overall, it came out almost exactly like I had hoped. Of course, looking back, it looked good in Jade too. But now, it is a one of a kind.
@@rustyminer Not sure how to guesstimate. I suppose it varies between g10 and micarta, density, porosity, smoothness of surface finish and what the starting and finishing colors are. Had a red backspacer that was more like smooth plastic then g10, and it took forever to dye black. On the other end the jade takes seconds.
That makes sense. Thanks for chiming in. This G10 was course and took dye quickly. I dyed some very smooth, dense linen micarta this same night, and it took much longer to take dye
A tiny bit of shoe polish rubbed into the texture near the very center of the "eye" area but buffed off the peaks so it shows off the texture would make a cool difference.
Looks like both turned out nice. I had to buy a second set of T series bits to take apart my Kershaw Hotwire. I'm waiting for the right time. I think it's assisted so I have to do it in a library cubicle in case a spring goes flying. I won't lose it. Only thing I don't like about Kershaw. Almost All their knives are assisted. I'm going to watch some videos on field stripping assisted knives so I don't screw it up. It's only a $12 knife but it's my first knife as an adult that I bought for myself. It seduced me into the Knaf Rabbit Hole.
Thanks Darren. I usually go for greens and browns, but this knife was crazy enough already I wanted to go with a bright color. Appreciate the feedback 😊
It's a little fun Frog. Gives you a reason to clean your knife on the inside, possibly improve the action and make your knife your own. Start on cheaper knives 🤣🤣🤣. My first jobs did not come out as expected. Use small amounts of dye. Teaspoons, not cups!
Very cool. I have found if you want a deeper richer red, first dye it orange wait a few days for it to really set. Then dye it again in red. Jut my experience.
Good tip bi actually have seen that on Twosun knives. Twosun makes some knives with orange factory scales. People dye them a deeper red. Looks good in the end. Thanks TopDog!
lol so cool i have this knife in my cart i really want it. also i cant buy knives off amazon because i live in new york so i have to buy my knives off ebay or aliexpress witch sucks because it takes weeks before i can recive my knife from aliexpress and i hate waiting lol
I indirectly started a rage on these a couple years ago, but that's another story. Long story short, there was a time Eafengrow could not keep up with demand on this knife. They were selling hundreds a day until they ran out. But, as with most knives. They made more................ :)

Have given that knife more than a passing glance while viewing the net. I like red scales & you definitely did a good job on that dye !
Thank you Tom. I'm dying by trail and error. I watched a few videos, read a couple articles, but even when you do it, you're still learning.
Hi Rusty. Nice dye job. You know, I've successfully dyed many of my knife scales and never had to remove them from my knives. Give it a try.
I believe you. I'm a little hesitant with D2 and steel bearings. I did dye my Rat with Aus8 and washers without taking it apart
Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
This is a fantastic video! Good job! And definitely an awesome knife! I have this knife, incredible value..
Thank you Larry. And thank you for sharing your experience with this knife. 👍👍

I bet that would sprucing it up.
I had this blade in fade dark earth and it was awesome 👌,, this brand is really good bang for your buck,
I'm finding most Eafengrows to be great buys!

Ah, the"seducer", eh? Sounds like a good plan, do your best not to lose any parts.
Good luck, I've never tackled a spring assisted disassembly before.
I agree with Peanut the red is sweet!

@@rustyminer I liked the red a lot more then the yellow.
Glad to hear that Darren. Wait until you see the other video about the yellow one
That came out great Rusty. Havn't tried doing that myself. Would like to have a go at it. Great knife as well.

Thanks my friend. I'm happy with most of my dye jobs, this one is above average in my opinion
