  • I came across a video showing an easy way to add dual hub motors to almost any existing ebike build. This is using grin technologies direct drive rh212 motor with their frankenrunner controller.
    Should I try this build?

I've got a Lectric XP 2.0 in August of 2021 that I've added an additional 48v 19.2AH battery from UnitPackPower to. Range is nice and in class 3 mode I just cheese it and rotate my my pedals slowly and get a consistent 25MPH. At a painstakingly slow 10MPH I can ride 60MI throttle only. Range at Class 2 top speed of 20MPH gets me ~35MI. Its been fun for sure. I have a trailer that I attach to the bike to haul things around and get groceries. As a matter of fact, I used the trailer to carry a cooler full of beer to a friends 4th of July party and it worked great! No other performance mods or anything, just the additional battery, stock motor/controller and its worked out fine for me. Happy riding!

Built a bafang mid drive (1750 peak watts)+throttle on a downhill mountain bike in 2016, put 60 thousand miles on it...Had to rebuild it twice...Went though too many sets of tires, brake pads, chains, derailurs, free wheels to keep straight in my feeble brain...Built a new one a few months ago with the Bafang BBSHD with the BAC controller, pushes 3,000 watts, and I have a comfort cruiser which is the Magicycle, with handle bars raised better front forks, big comfy seat with suspension seat post...have a motor for the front wheel but haven't done it yet...

Two motors running in sync is way better in inclement weather than just have a rear hub. That alone makes me want to do it. I'd definitely have to consider buying an additional battery though as well.

I have the original 48V x-class added a 52 v and a front hub motor. I pretty much made a Grizzly. I enjoy it! I ordered the franken runner to pump up the stock motor. I may eventually switch out the stock motor and get a 1500 watt or a 2k watt and a higher voltage battery but not sure yet. Once you start modding you can never stop lol also I did the one throttle to both motors and wired in a switch to turn off one or the other. It’s dope!

I have fitted a conversion kit to an old bike and it is great! It is a 48V 1000W hub motor fitted on the rear, it has plenty of power for top end speed and a good amount of torque for pulling away, but I am considering adding another hub motor on the front! Given what I have just told you I am guessing you are thinking 'why do you want to do that?' Well it is very simple, every time I go out I try and use the power sparingly trying not to get too lazy! But every time the motor gets too hot and cuts out, usually, and most annoyingly not far from home which is of course on quite a steep hill! So my thinking is that if I have 2 motors driving the bike it will reduce the strain on the single motor which should in theory significantly reduce the likelihood of either motor getting too hot and cutting out!?

I understand your disease. I've been riding with a 48v mid drive (TSDZ2) that peaks around 1.2kW, but I recently bought 20 lipo batteries and I plan on building myself a 20S battery with them (72v 16ah). Gonna get one of the cyc x1 pro mid drive motors with the BAC2000 controller. With that said I'll need a more rugged bike, preferably steel frame with a legit fork and bigger tires/wheels.

    • @zamb0nio
      @zamb0nio ปีที่แล้ว

@@mustbee-bike994 can you tell me what is so unstable about them? in a regular working scenario, batteries don't just blow up for no reason. i would consider them unstable if there's a short circuit, the cell is physically damaged, the cell has been charge cycled too many times, too much current is being drawn, or if the cell got wet. all of which are not applicable. cylindrical lithium ion batteries are just as unstable in every regard as lipos are. lifepo4 batteries would be ideal for what you call a "stable" battery but their energy density is about half compared to liion/lipo. i will be benchmarking and testing all of my cells to ensure the maximum amount of safety and that they meet their 400amp rated output.

The ebikes/scooters presence has in increased were I'm at but it has been for a while being the preferred delivery vehicle so it doesn't seem substantial as for my bike, my 1st was a 2020 Rad Mini 4 great bike and recently moved to the Juiced Ripracer less upkeep I don't have to worry about the derailleur since the motor torque and speed more than makes up for the lack of it on my commute.

I think dual motors are useful if you weigh alot or for offroading/climbing. I just ordered my battery for my system which is a 48v 1500w cheap kit with a cheap battery thats 48v 20ah 35amp bms but i weigh 230lbs so I hope this will be enough torque and speed for what i want for just street use. I have a Ghost rider stretched bike and the motor is on the front with 2 cheap torque arms but i wanna upgrade those. If i wanna upgrade I might add on a new controller and battery to upgrade the volts.(accounting for overheating) or i would add a rear motor kit on which either idea will cost me the same. (with an added rear kit i wouldnt gain much top speed but alot of torque,so thats my question,do i go for more top speed or torque)

I've been studying the dual made DIY builds on TH-cam for months of the pros and cons for many builds merely an overkill of putting motors together. It is the weight added on from motor, battery and misc parts which places a lag of the progress of being practical. I.E. when using 1 of 2 motors the extra weight decreased by 20 % of the power while pushing the wattage outage by same%. If bike is heavy going uphill needs to be used at same time due to using 1 which speed will decrease dramactly due to total weight. Aero Grizzly Duals ((pro build) shows this but those bikes strictly for dirt off roading trailing.
I put this in thought as I made my DIY to be used as a real practical way of use of commuting over hill jumping or trailing. The weight I put in check by only using 1 Gear motor which is the best way to commute long distance without stopping to let motor cool down( gearless DD can only go few miles full throttle before it signals or cut off to cool down a bit) My 2nd motor is the DD 2000watt Gearless DD only used as accelerated off my gear motor. Once I get into cruise control on t he e gear, I turn on my 2nd motor as a Turbo Boost where I can ride over 12 Miles or more going 40mph, while maintaining energy output as only 1 motor using more power in the Gearless DD which with the weight of the gear motor and frame adds up to only 79.lbs. I only weigh a buck thirdy so making the Dual this way using a low wattage gear motor as the base as the Gearless is Turbo Boost. Range is 80miles, top speed is 44, mph as I go up steep hill at 36mph.

I have a 20s14p battery I made, with sper capacitors in between it and the controollers. Wiring the bike was a lesson in frustration, after a while there was so many wires i lost track of what they were for and where they were supposed to go. Initially i tried color coding them but gave that up after a while. The bike was originally a cheap ass fat tire go trax folding webike, but it is no longer reognizable as such. I call it the Canadian phoenix, due to the decals it has, the front suspension is a scwinn reproduction that i modified to fit it, and i made my own handlebars. The bike is a MONSTER. It scares me to ride it. I want to build a recumbrant trike electric for my next project.

@@Mr23GB all tough questions I don’t have good answers for
I’ve got a cheap amazon shock with 1500 on my front that I had to file to accept the wheel.
A couple years of riding with no issues
The bike does mid 40s with most its mileage in the 30mph ballpark and light off-roading when possible.
So that being said, most will probably “handle” the motor, but probably very few that are truly rated for what you’re doing.
You pretty much have to spend a bunch to find one that’s really made for it, I didn’t want to double my build price. So I went with a Nimalo brand with torque bar on both sides and try to check regularly.
Can’t recommend what I’ve done, but it’s held up for a couple years and going out when the sun is up in a bit
      Good luck
Oh, I’ve heard of people using motorcycle forks. Have no idea what kind of modifications if any have to be done. Could be an affordable option depending on what you’re building

i have a G62 on my BBSHD bike. Dual motors (+ battery) adds a lot of weight, becomes less of a bike, hard to put it in a bike stand, hard to get the wheel off, every time I flip it upside down on handlebars jacks im scared they are gonna break Lol. Too lazy to take the batteries off every time I want to do maintenance tho. My main gripe with the hub hub motor and additional torque arm etc is you need a handful of tools and different sockets to get the wheel off. Whereas normal bike wheel is 2 nuts (or QR) and no big deal to work on. I don't know about a hub motor on the front wheel, thats a lot of additional weight to be throwing around, i Like my front wheel nimble. I would put a BBSHD on the bike with a smaller chainring so you can pop off from a stop faster than cars. Grin has a motor simulator where you can plug in your bike parameters, BBSHD motor, set the chainring to different sizes to see what speeds the gears will spin out and how fast it should go at a given power level etc. I think if i did it all again it would be on a really lightweight bike with a high voltage BBSHD. I have a lot of fun on my bike but its so heavy and lost a lot of the "bike" qualities that I do miss dearly

I thought I would give an answer to this question if you were still wondering now. I have two ebikes with dual motors and dual batteries and it takes a bit to get use to the torque of the front wheel spinning the tire because there is now weight on the front wheel. Once you get use to that it is like having a turbo.. so nice to power up hills with no need to pedal etc

Seems to me that 2 motors on an ebike would work just as well as it does on a scooter so idk why ebikes don't just come with 2 motors.

I think for your build, while tempting, doesn't need the second motor. Especially since it's a foldable bike, adding more weight to a light weight build seems counter intuitive. As for the ebikes for me it went from not seeing any to seeing about 3-5, so a pretty huge increase.
I have a Super73 Z1 got a couple months back so I can relearn how to ride a bike lol, just savin up till i got enough to get an Onyx though.

Hi NP, big fan of your channel...I've just completed the build, its a Tern 507 Eclipse P9 with EcoCycle Tongsheng mid drive, 1x10 Shimano Zee group set and a few other bits and bobs. @hillyseattlenarrowstreets6087 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Look into a Bafang M620 mid-drive - it's their most powerful motor and the Tern P9 frame will accept this motor. That will be a lot easier to install than the CYC stealth.

@@DocTaRED I did a Zizzo folder w/ BBS02 mid-drive and it's a fast wheelie machine if you're not careful - 20" wheels, short wheelbase and high motor torque will do it. Lean over handlebar at Start-up to keep wheels down. Got up to 28 mph on flat. Luna bikes had a folding bike with this configuration, "A Frigging Shredder" You tube channel had this bike in his top 5.
However Cadence sensor made low speed maneuvers a little twitchy, power would go on a little too fast when crankset activates Cadence sensor, newbies would crash. Bought a Tongsheng Tsdz2 with torque sensor, handles much better for newbie riders. However you lose "easy pedaling" at top speeds due to no Cadence Sensor. You have to push pedals hard to get speed with torque sensing.
I thought the Tern P9 uses the mid-drive frame that accepts high end motors - ie it doesn't install thru bottom bracket crankset like a BBS02.

    • @DocTaRED
      @DocTaRED ปีที่แล้ว

@@hillyseattlenarrowstreets6087 That's awesome Hilly, thanks for sharing. I could imagine that combo being a wheelie machine and of course loads of fun...but not so user friendly haha. I have seen that vid before and follow his channel, great stuff!
I initially was going to use a 20inch folding frame (Giant Expressway) but I already have a middrive 20inch bike (Ananda M80 motor), plus I also have 2 other Bafang bikes. I thought it was time to try something different, and so I was lucky enough to find a 24 inch Tern Eclipse P9. The P9 acronym is just the model type and number of gears. It's just a thru bottom bracket install. I do really like the frame and build quality.
Well described comparison between the 2...you hit on the head with losing that easy pedaling at the top end. Thankfully I did get a throttle with it but ultimately this is the pain point in the build.

I've added a front geared hub motor on my juiced scrambler (changed out the forks to be steel ones, heard alot of aluminum ones have issues with snapping under load). While it was a fun project, but even with the impressive torque and ridiculous hill climbing ability, I don't think it's worth the money. I think the most cost effective way of getting a more powerful bike is to strip the parts to either sell or make a new bike out of, then use the extra money to go all in on a higher watt rear hub or middrive motor + controller setup. Not gonna lie, it would be interesting to see you give it a go tho.

Sure, you can run both motors using one throttle, but why would you want to? A throttle for each wheel gives much better control of the bike. The front having less weight on it will have a tendency to spinout, especially on takeoff. You can avoid this by using separate throttles.

Heck yes do a dual motor build! That sounds so much like what i was trying to achieve with one mid drive setup. Only hitch in my giddy-up has been i want a 20" fat tire bike built like a moped. No pedals, only footpegs. With two motors i could achieve this top speed I need of 45-50mph. I could go in depth of what I'm needing but nah. Kind of surprised they don't have these on market already. Do you know of a controller that could handle 1000watts x 2 and yet still being rather simple enough for this beginner (noob) to work with??
