Both our Berners would smell our breath. So do our cats. It is also a way of confirming if you are feeling well or not. Our first Berner Britney was extremely good at predicting when my husband was about to fall out from extreme high or low blood sugars and then herd him to bed or to sit down. This was back before studies on therapy dogs having this ability. They also love to cuddle and get belly rubs. One trait most Berners have is that they love to come and sit on your feet and cuddle up yo your leg, if you are in their pack family. The weird one was our second Berner Arlo, the big baby boy as he never did that... But he did spoon.

I've been waiting for my Bernese Mountain dog puppy for 2 years. Looks like next year I will finally get one. For now , thanks for sharing Benny. My grandkids love him.
I love watching Benny so much. My grand puppy loves all and any kind of food with the exception of basil, won't even go near it but will eat anything else no matter what it is, and she has to have a toy in her mouth when anyone comes to the door and loves to cuddle. Again, thanks for all of the videos, love Benny so much.
A friend of mine used to train elephants for our local animal park and I got a chance to be with a baby one once (so fun!). The trainer told me that elephants like to smell your breath to see what you've been eating and that animals rely the most on the sense with the largest sensory organ. Makes sense. Love your videos! Benny is SO cute!!!
I agree that they are crazy, affectionate, obedient, faithful and smart. And full of energy when they are puppies. I miss Sugar I loved that dog so much. It wasn't even mine it was my sister's dog.
Thanks for sharing your life with a Berner. My Sunny bear is currently undergoing radiation treatment for cancer. He just turned seven. It is so sad that such a wonderful, loving pup has to go through so much. Watching your dog helps. Berners are such a mixed bag, they love so intensely for a shorter life span.
Just found your channel and my wife and I really love it!💗 She has wanted a BMD forever. Benny is so great. The first video I ever saw was the life with a mountain dog where he jumps in bed with you at the start and literally pushes you back down every time you try and get up, it's so funny and cute and I'd never seen a dog be that insistent about lying down with someone! Love the channel and Benny and you all too of course! Much love to you all!!✌🌹❤😋
Had a Berner for about 8 years. Unfortunately he passed away last year but the smelling thr breath, eating anything (except pickles he wouldnt eat those lol). Are all things that ours did. He was such an amazing dog, and definitrly different from any breed I'd ever owned before. Also the carpet and cuddling are things he loved doing lol. Love the videos!
We love Benny!!! Our Bernedoodle is just like Benny she will eat anything and she wants anything human food’s that we eat!!! I was preparing dinner and getting fresh green beans and said she probably won’t eat this and sure enough she loved it!!! So there’s nothing she won’t eat!!! I can’t believe the haters out there because you’re vlog on why a Bernese Mountain Dog wouldn’t be a good fit is a good thing to have and educate people before they just go and pick up a dog that’s not suitable for them!!!! So bravo to you for making it and don’t ever let the 1% ever be tolerated or get to you because most people have common sense and to all the people who don’t there’s no hope for them anyway because they would of learned by now!!! Great job you guys!!!
The thing about Berners is that they LOVE being with people, so him getting in the car is him wanting to be with you more and knows that this big creature with four circular legs takes you somewhere, so he wants to go too.
Great videos. Have owned a berner, they are unique in every way. Lost my girl on aug 29 2020 lung cancer. Contemplating getting another one. Have lost many, but this is more than missing her, but the need to have a Bernese in my life again. Keep the awsome videos coming
He might be a powerhouse in the park (or anywhere really) but he was so relaxed and comfortable at the end of the video. Clearly wonderful dog parents - great work both of you 👍👍
My dog does the mouth smelling too! We looked it up and it turns out that a dogs sense of smell is so powerful that they can sense hormones through smell. So basically they’re trying to figure out what our mood is (along with the normal dog sniffing stuff). We noticed our dog will act differently when we come home based on what our mood is and after she’s sniffed our mouth. It’s incredible how smart they are!
Oh my goodness my Bernese Gretchen always wants to stand between our legs. We do wiggle butt with her. I thought it was just a weird thing Gretchen did...lol. Guess she is a normal Berner

Enjoy all your Benny videos. I have adopted 3 of them and hope to have another pup soon. Fingers are crossed. My first 2 berners insisted on sleeping with my oldest son every night on his single bed. 120 pound male and 90 pound female - Elsie and Samson. I do not know how there was room on the bed for the three of them but they all managed somehow. Berners all seem to have their own unique traits.
This is the kindest, and most Beautiful Dog in the world. I had one, many years ago, and still miss him everyday !!! But a shepard dog like this, belong more in the green plains and hills in Switserland, where the dog breed came from, and not in the city, with much noise and high buildings. And no other dog has such beautiful colour and pantings, like The Berner Sennen has. Love and wishes from Norway !!!
My Berner reacts the same way to the fart noises and moves the bath mats around, too. At times, I think that Auggie thinks he is a cat, climbing on the couch, bed, and s snuggling in!

Our Berner loves the car as well. As soon as we go out for a walk he makes a bee-line straight for the car. When he was a pup, we would sometimes take him in the car to calm him down. BMDs are eerily similar to human babies sometimes.
My Bernese loves to be Vacuumed! He will follow it around. Loves Corn and celery. Each weekend we drive to the beach and he senses our departure and gets so excited. He loves car rides (it’s a 3 hr ride). He will press his head down on you in his begging look. As soon as you go to rub his head, he pops it up. He never leaves it down while you rub.
Our BMD loves car rides too! When my husband leaves the house, she acts like he’s never coming back and even if he’s only gone a couple of minutes, she welcomes him like he’s been gone years. Not so in the car. She can wait hours for him to return and although she shows she’s happy to see him, there isn’t the big drama.
This is my life with my Berner Boy Hamilton! He LOVES to cuddle! Every morning after i let him out, it's a race to the bed so I can get in place before he pounces on me for our morning cuddles!
Omg our berner pup does the smelling of the mouth also lol ur Berner does the same things as ours...Spinoza loves all kinds of food, fruits and veggies. They’re soooo lovable ❤️❤️❤️

I can’t imagine a more perfect dog. Benny is absolutely pure love💛💛 The smelling of the mouth has to do with a dogs amazing ability to perceive emotions: If you're fearful, anxious, or sad, your body may produce certain hormones, such as adrenaline. Dogs can detect scents from these hormones, along with other body chemicals released. It’s also a natural way dogs greet one another. In some instances, some dogs detect sickness in humans by smelling a humans breath.
Hi we have a 3/4 bouvier called tess she loves curling up against mt to start the new day at the end of the night ..like benne..this race of dog is wonderful
Hey another great video , in regard to the first point you made, on (animal watch) on youtube wolves have similar behaviour (prepare yourself) it involves licking the inside of the mouth of the human and other wolves . letting him smell your mouth is a way of learning about a person and in itself is a submissive behaviour on the part of the person who is being smelled/ licked- it encourages trust. - I welcome more knowledgeable people to correct me , in case what i have written is incorrect.
Wolves regurgitate food for their pups (it's an efficient way to carry food home to them, plus aids their digestion), so pups will greet their parents by licking their mouths in anticipation of a meal. So dogs/puppies are hard-wired to at least smell if not lick mouths, especially food-obsessed breeds like Berners! When a dog licks your face, we like to believe it's a kiss, but it's probably more a way to suck up to us for food or attention.
Haha! Our Bernese (6-month-old) loves all of those things except maybe the mouth smelling haha! She ADORES vegetables and fruit, definitely will put her head under carpets, blankets, between cushions 😅🤷♀️
My Bernese is just like Benny. They’re so odd but so lovable !! Joey, my pup, loves to give hugs like a human and will eat anything as well (even tho his tummy is so sensitive)
Our Bernese Mountain Dog, August, also loves car rides. The day we picked him up from his mother we drove for 5 hours go get home and he loved it. 😊 Benny is not alone, PotatoBernese is with him all the way 🐶
Ours had similar weird things too. Used to smell our noses - seemed like she was really concentrating when she did it. Sit on feet, go in between peoples legs, throw her lead around when she was going out, cautious of strangers, big lap dog, panted all summer, sometimes wouldn’t come in for the night if it was snowing, incredibly attached, had no idea her tail was clearing coffee tables or knocking over toddlers. Would sniff my wife’s stomach when my wife was pregnant - again very intently. They should not and cannot be left alone for more than a few hours - you make a pact with a Berner that she/he will give you beyond anything you can imagine in return for just being with them. Yes they are weird but in the most beautiful way and when you no longer have one you’ll miss them terribly.
Hello! New subscriber here. You mentioned he does the weird mouth sniffing thing, fun fact; wolves do this. They will actually pester you and other wolves go open their mouths and let them sniff and/or lick inside of your mouth. It’s so they know what’s going on and what you’ve ate. Hope this helps! He’s such a cutie
You've got an awesome pup there. I have two dogs. They're both mixed breeds. One is a black lab mix and does the smell your mouth thing. Btw, I believe this trait is passed down from wolves. Ik pups in dens will smell and lick the inside of their parents' mouths when they return from a hunt in order to induce vomiting so the pups can eat. My other dog has diabetes and no longer eats store bought treats. After I give him his insulin, I always give him fresh or frozen fruit or veggies. He loves em. He'll also eat lettuce. His favorites are carrots, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, and green beans. He went from an obese 90 lbs to a more suitable 55 lbs and looks awesome. We used to free feed before we knew better. Now, we just need to work on my 20 lb Maine coon, lol. I even portion out his food, but I guess I'm just not playing with him enough. Keep up the good work. Benny is gorgeous and looks like such a happy boy!
With the vegetable thing, both our bernese and even a swissy used to eat A LOT of vegetables, Bart (our last dog, a swissie) loved nothing more to eat than pineapples for some reason. Honestly the same thing with a car, we couldn't leave a car trunk or any other car door open for more than few minutes without Bart trying to get inside no matter how full the space was. Never met more cuddly dogs than our two Bernese and one swissy, they just l9ve company
My former neighbor had a Bernie. I would occasionally walk him or dog sit. My neighbor has been a friend of mine for years. I met Hutch, the Bernie, as a puppy. He would bark at me if I didn’t use both hands to pet him at the same time. He would also tackle me, if he could, to wrestle or just roll around. In his time, he helped foster dozens of dogs. He was amazing. Your Bernie looks like it has the same spirit.
Oh, he is such a happy dog. Oh, yes he is.

Thank you
Looks like he's just making a makeshift pillow with the rug curled up...smart dog!!!
My bernese mountain dogs also loves car rides but it's mainly because we always drive to their favorite spots to go for a walk :')
My berner does the exact same spoon/be on his back and stretch thing to cuddle 🤣
This is my life with my Berner Boy Hamilton! He LOVES to cuddle! Every morning after i let him out, it's a race to the bed so I can get in place before he pounces on me for our morning cuddles!
Our Berner would literally eat anything too. Vegetables, popcorn, cotton. And he loved the car and was a big time cuddler!
Omg our berner pup does the smelling of the mouth also lol ur Berner does the same things as ours...Spinoza loves all kinds of food, fruits and veggies. They’re soooo lovable ❤️❤️❤️
Been a subscriber for quite some time now, and i must say love ya guys! No offence but Benny has like 80% of it :) nonetheless, you have a cool channel, and everytime i get a notification from you guys, its always a great pleasure to watch your vids! You rock! Please give Benny a hug for me 😊
I can’t imagine a more perfect dog. Benny is absolutely pure love💛💛
The smelling of the mouth has to do with a dogs amazing ability to perceive emotions: If you're fearful, anxious, or sad, your body may produce certain hormones, such as adrenaline. Dogs can detect scents from these hormones, along with other body chemicals released. It’s also a natural way dogs greet one another. In some instances, some dogs detect sickness in humans by smelling a humans breath.
Galanis Gallegos Great explanation. Our furry friends are much more intelligent than we give them credit for. Coevolution if you ask me.
My family had a great dane when I was young and she was very fond of smelling our breath. She often wanted to know what we'd been eating.
I had a cocker mix that also did that.
We called it a system check.
They are so cute!
So glad is saw this 😂😂 our berner does the weird breath thing too lol
Haha it’s so weird they all do this
Our Bernese Mountain Dog, August, also loves car rides. The day we picked him up from his mother we drove for 5 hours go get home and he loved it. 😊 Benny is not alone, PotatoBernese is with him all the way 🐶
Must be a breed thing 💕
Supper adorable Supper cute no words😀😀😀
Loved this so much. Benny is such a charmer! Great content.
Thank you!

May you enjoy a long and happy life!
Our little girl will be one year old next month, looking forward to taking her to the beach, she was just a tiny puppy last time.
Oh yes Benny is a wild pup lol
My dog (brown lab) used to love all the different types of food. He’d just avoid basil at all cost...! I kind of miss her eating all of my leftovers 😄
He's got his priorities straight life is short and not what we think.
esp for his breed☹
So far, everything you've said, both my Berners do. They're just weird, wonderful dogs!
