I wanted a suzuki 115ss for my 18ft center console but I can't get it so I'll probably end up with the tohatsu 115. I've looked at the tohatsu 115 and 140 at the local dealer and the motor is simple and well built. If it's anything like their 25s and 40s then A+.

I have a 2015 50 fourstroke tohatsu on a 16' fiberglass flatbottom with a polling platform. I mostly saltwater fish and I have had zero issues with it. With a 13.25x15p prop it pushes the boat 36 knots w/ 2 people. I beat the hell out of it and she just keeps on going. I paid $6,750 brand new out the door rigging installed and taxes included. It was also the cheapest compared to all the other brands at the time by $800, the next cheapest was the Suzuki. I was skeptical about the brand but the dealer I bought it from said that if I didn't like it he would pull the engine off and give me a full refund plus $100, I said bring it on 🤘. I totally recommend getting one

Fishermen in Asia have been using Tohatsu exclusively for decades. That should tell you a lot about the outboard, they put long hours on their motors and they need them to be dependable, they run forever. I sold Tohatsu in the 90's. They were good dependable motors then and they've only gotten better

VTEC is different than VVT typically. Had a 2002 200HP Honda with the 3.5 Honda Odyssey and Pilot motor off the cars. The difference back then was the 200hp didn’t,have the hydraulic valve for engaging the VTEC at 4500 rpm. The 225HP had the valve so basically same power and torque below 4500. I didn’t care to rag my motor out above 4500 on plane. Plus salt water waves make it uncomfortable so I save the $1000-$1500 hours. Coast,Guard mechanic said they regularly run them over 5000 hours

The secret to going fast?.........time and money. Really it's all below the water line, and weight. How efficient is your hull? And what does the lower unit shape look like? There's a reason a merc sport master is shaped the way it is. On a real performance hull, any make 250 with a merc sporty lower unit will run a good number. Horse power is horse power. No matter if it's merc black, rude blue, yammy gray..... With the advent of merc removable hubs a person can run a merc prop on about anything. Real performance is all in weight, the hull bottom, and the prop and lower unit profile, gear ratio, and shape.

You're talking from a Bass fisherman's point of view or even a speed boat guys pov.
Honda focus is on the offshore industry as most of their engines are sold in New Zealand and Australia. When those guys are out fishing, they don't care if their motor makes them go 3 NPH faster like the Mercury. They just want their motor to get them home every time because if your engine peters out (like Mercury's do often) you f**ked because you're stuck sitting on top of the Great Barrier Reef. They also like fuel economy. Honda/Suzuki/Yamaha/Tohatsu fit that build because all four of them are in that bracket. Mercury's are for guys that drive Corvettes. The Merc gives you a great holeshot and top speed when it's not in the shop.

Holeshot is par with the other motors and I’m sure if I wanted to spend a bunch of money I could get it to run within 3 or so mph of the other motors. Right now I’m probably 7-8 behind the others, but the boat rides amazing so I don’t care. Does exactly what I expected, smooth and quiet. If I take off the cowling there’s Honda written on a bunch of parts. Exact same motor, Honda makes everything 150 and up. Not sure when that started though.

The numbers on the Sharrow are promising, and good on fuel efficiency and performance. Those numbers. however, doesn’t justify the additional cost over conventional props. When you’re talking dropping 3k plus on a prop, you gotta do a shitload of boating to offset the investment in the Sharrow prop.

Fyi, outboard motors can be plus or minus 10% of the advertised HP. If you put both motors on a Dyno Yamaha/Merc would come in a closer to 275. The Honda 225. Add the 90lbs weight difference vs a SHO and their is your speed difference.
There is always a price to be paid for performance. Personally I would not own a merc or yamaha thats is not under warranty. A power head is is 14k with parts labor and taxes. Maybe more now days with LONG wait times.
Yamaha and Merc are “Racing” motors and subject to failure.
A local guide is on his 3rd SHO power head on a 2021 motor with under 800 hours. Another “Pro-bass fisherman said he had yamahas crew out his power head twice in one weekend. That extra weight is thicker, heavier parts that make a huge difference in long shelf life. Same goes with Diesel Yacht engines. The high performance motors tweeked to the max will need an owner with deep pockets whereas the same block but detuned will run thousands of hours trouble free. Not everyone wants to go 70 mph. On my lake with all the wakeboard boats and yachts 50 is too fast. I’ll take reliability every time. IMHO.

I run a Honda 250 on an Alumacraft Trophy 205. It has great low end torque plus it’s quiet and fuel efficient. It trolls really well too.
As far as top end goes, it tops out at 49-51 mph with a 19p stainless. I’m sure it could do better. I’ve heard from others a Suzuki would be like 50-52 and Yamaha/Merc like 52-54. Not really a significant difference especially when the vast majority of people rarely run WOT. I do maybe 5% of the time, but the lake we boat on most has a speed limit of 40 mph which it does easily and comfortably.
Propping and gear ratios due make a difference, but the Honda is better suited to running heavier loads along with better reliability which is why they are used heavily in commercial and offshore applications. While not apples to apples, but sort of similar. The Merc or Yamaha is like having a truck with 3.21 gears vs the Honda which is like a truck with 3.92 gears.
Overall a great choice for pontoons and typical fiberglass/aluminum runabouts/fishing boats. Unless tweaked or propped differently for the tournament bass boater, it wouldn’t meet their priorities of WOT top speed.
