Fun thing here- in mythology and fairytales knowing someone’s name can give you power over them. So, when Odysseus names Athena her mask disappears. I love their design for her so much
10:57 It's not explicitly stated in the musical, but this is one of Athena's powers (I believe Jay calls it quick-thought) where she can pause time and pull people into her dimension for a chat. That's what she did with Odysseus there, basically tell him to not let his guard down (contrary to what Polites was urging him to do last song).
What I love about this song is how it alludes to Athena’s and Odysseus’ relationship as a mentor and student through the music. As you noticed in the video: the first time Athena sings the chorus, she held the note on the word “mind”. The second time she sings it in the chorus, she is singing with Odysseus. When they sing the word “mind” together, Athena holds the note while Odysseus runs through it showing their different styles and personalities through their execution; and by the end of the chorus they both run through the word “mind” together; showing that they are usually on the same page. At the end of the song, Athena runs through it by herself; alluding to the concept that teachers learn from their students as much as the students learn from them, even if they don’t realize it. I just love that little touch and thought I‘d share it, plus this concept does come back later, so keep an ear out. 😁
This is one of my favorite aspects of the melodic interplay between them. And I'm impressed that Jen picked up on Athena joining Odysseus on her first listen. This is the first reaction in which I've seen the listener notice that right away.
The writer explained he got a lot of story telling influence from video games and anime. He explains that when Athena is coming in she's kind of stopping time with her ability he calls "Quick Thought"
Actually it's not Odysseus (Odìsseo in Greek or Ulisse in Latin) thinking back at his youth but it's actually Athena (Atena in Greek) talking with him in his mind. So it's like her scolding him because he's loafing and throwing fruits with his buddy. Just to let you know she will do it again in the saga, and all the time even if she will be depicted in the scene it will always be only in Odisseo's mind. Live, laugh, love Atena
@@SantosoWijaya I think you can also pronounce it as Athena, anyway yours is certainly correct 😉. Thanks for the correction, I got confused with her name in my native language which is not Greek of course. Love ya😘.
Her name is Greek is Athena, not Athéna."A" as in Ant, the "the" sounds like "THInk" and "na" as in "nasty", the words I used were for example, to display the phonetics, whilst in Greek the emphasis on her name is in the syllable "ná" and not "thé", it's Athená and not Athéna. And Odysseus is actually pronounced Othesseas, "O", "the" as in "THEre", "se" as in "SEt", "as" as in "us".
Love how much coldet Athena sounds at the beginning of the song (she is, after all, pissed that her clever warrior might start lowering his guard/listening to his heart) vs how she sounds warmer/playful in the flashback portion Then back to cold when she dismisses him with the warning "Dont disappoint me"
One thing that had to be pointed out to me is that, while the actual line is "Well done. Enlighten me, what's your name?", you can also hear it is "Well done. You lied to me, what's your name?".
This is the song that got me into the epic musical. Id heard it a couple of times on a musicals radio station and loved it. Went looking found a playlist and i was hooked. Now epic is life.
@@Dawn_the_dragon on box office radio, it's a station for musicals. Only ever heard warrior of the mind on it. We need epic at musicalcon in London in Oct.
The next saga is indeed Cyclops. Also, Teagan Earley has three heartbreaking songs about her crushed mother-hood dreams that absolutely need more attention. Her artist name on spotify and TH-cam is TE/MO and the songs are Mother I, II and III
That's so true about their voices blending together well!! This is one of my favorite songs (probably my favorite in this saga but it's so hard to choooose!) and I think that is a big part of why
One pf my favorite things is how each character is assigned an instrument. Odysseus has the guitar (nylon in emotional/sincere moments, electric in his cunning moments), Penelope has the viola, Polites has a marimba (iirc), Athena has the piano. (She's also represented by a ticking clock/metrenome, which you caught at the very beginning of the first song. Athena was watching what her protoge was doing.) Something interesting Jorge said is that he gave the humans more traditional instrumentation, whereas the gods (and later, the monsters) have a more elctronic instrumentation. The only human character we see with an electric instrument is Odysseus in his more cunning moments. A cunning shaped by Athena (& possibly his relation to Hermes, his paternal grandfather). It's fascinating to hear.
This is the best animated version of this song~ with Athena's design mask/tiara and owl transformation, her owl-form having helmet design on back of its head and her manhandling Odysseus and the Athena bracelet, it's just so good! 👏👏
@@SantosoWijaya Absolutely agreed. I actually wish more folks would react to that version, as lovely as mircsy's animatics are. Especially considering Wolfy is a HUGE fan of the source material as well as EPIC, and includes details such as Odysseus' maternal grandfather Autolycus, his wound from tangling with the boar, King Laertes giving up the throne of Ithaca to his son early... It's just so great, dude. Also, I honestly just adore Wolfy's style. It may be my personal favourite of all the fandom animators, even if it isn't as flashy as some others in the community. It's a shame that they seem to be burnt out on EPIC content, but that's just how it goes, I suppose.
I really love your reaction and I wanted to make you know, the dog in the animation of "Warrior of the mind" is the dog of Odisseo, his name is Argo. He is in one of my favourite part of the Odissea. I really hope to see if in the future animation or song he will be present. P.S. Sorry if there are some error, English is not my first language.
it was so amazing, seing him organize everything on tiktok. It was so cool, how he explained how the melodies came together, especially when multiple ppl meet: Each character has its own melody, and when they meet, they overlay each other, to the point, where they become one. Oh and the auditions he made were so interesting too: he would post a sing along clip, with the melody only (and once with him singing it to give a general idea), and then ask for ppl to post clips of them singing. He'd chose the one best fitting in secret, while puplicly acknowledging some of the "auditions" in a seperate clip.
9:58, not sure there was much auditioning Teagan needed to do here for the role of Athena as she and Jorge have known eachother for a while AND performed together in Jesus Christ Superstar!
I've just found your account in my recommended and im so glad you love Tegan's voice as much I did! She just recently made a tiktok account and I am hoping to get a part in any live renditions of EPIC or work for the team one day. I am going to be binging your reactions to EPIC for sure!
About the foreshadow/flashback. She is associated with the sound of a ticking clock. Which is also heard when he discusses the atrategy jn The Horse and the Infant.

Athena, being the goddess of wisdom and tactics (amongst other things), is given the ability to pull people into her perception of time... essentially freezing it in place while she plans/converses with someone. I have no idea if this is an ability that ever gets attributed to her in myth but it makes sense imo.
I'm so excited for her to get to ruthlessness, I feel like she is going to lose her bloody mind (but maybe that's just me because I love that man's voice so much)

10:34 Athena is just so bubbly and playful 🥰
Athena: don't disappoint me 😈
I'd use the emoji "don't disappoint me 😤"
To be fair... even in the Odyssey, she's still just a wholesome little goober. She just would never admit it.

Isn’t it Athene (alpha theta eta nu eta) if you want to split hairs with the Greek spelling/pronunciation? There’s only one Alpha in Athene

That's what I thought the line was the first dozen times I heard it. And either one works great there
I was today years old when I learned it wasn't "you lied to me" XD

5:20 The way the singer goes low and growly with "As I teach him" in this sentence always does it for me!
Yay! You picked up on Athena joinig on Odysseus' trail😊 Jay said it's shows that Athena is growing to trust in Odysseus as they sing more similarly.

I prefer Wolfy’s with the Greek mural motif. It fits the storytelling device of ancient Greece more.
