  • This time on the channel, I'm walking through the process of thoroughly cleaning your bearings with the Bones Bearings cleaning kit and Speed Cream. I show you the process of cleaning them step-by-step and test the results afterward. Then I review the cleaning kit itself to see if it's worth it, or if you should try to clean them with stuff around the house.

    Dammit! I just filmed the same thing yesterday. I'm still going to put it out anyway. I love the bearing cleaning bottle. It's so much easier and more effective than rattling them around in a can or a bottle. The rust isn't a big deal it will wear away and smooth out with use and future cleaning. Also, I just wanted to say I appreciate your video style and content. As someone who also makes videos I like how you do them without chopping up up all your speaking like most youtubers and vloggers. I have been trying to get my content less chopped up these days. It's not as easy as it looks.

      Michaelbuddy....no, if you did that it would be pouring out of the bearing and be wasted. Its a synthetic lube and just needs to coat the surfaces, any more is wasted.

    I had ceramic bones bearing which started to seize up. I bought the kit. After following the instructions they were totally good. The only thing I would say about this video Rad Rat, is that you should leave the bearings for quite a while in the container so that all the crap. Falls out. Then re do them with fresh. Then keep the at solution for the first wash on the next set etc .... that’s my experience ... not a cheap kit but well made and it will pay for itself afte a few cleans...

    To dry try putting a piece of string (maybe a shoelace) through the centre of the bearing & use it to spin it around like a sling until it is dry. Outdoors of course away from anything you don't want your cleaning agent on.

    But are there any advantages skateboardingwise to cleaning out your bearings or is more like an OCD thing, where you actually enjoy the ritual just like some people enjoy tinkering with their cars all day? I'm more a get China Reds and replace 'em when needed type guy, but then I've never actually ridden an AAA set of bearings. Paying extra for patent formula wheels can make a big difference over generic polyurethane, but is the difference in bearings really even noticeable when riding?

    I thing keeping expensive, and/or efficient, bearings around for a long time is the key behind cleaning them. Not necessarily the ability to restore and enhance crap or damaged bearings. I like the product as well.

  • @shagbert516

    Use evapo-rust or a similar product to eliminate the rust. It is water soluble and can be used multiple times then you would have basically new bearings

      @RyanHipp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i was going to suggest the Vapo-Rust as well! One night soaking in a shallow pan of vapo-rust as a pre-clean should eliminate all rust from the steel. Its great stuff.

    If ur looking for a cheap option of stuff u pronly have at home Just pour some rubbing alcohal in a plastic container then take off the bearing covers and throw the bearings in the container and shake for a min or 2 then I just use the speed cream to re lube them and it works fine for me

  • @seanissomething
    @seanissomething 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Rather than just popping the shields out, pop out the racers too and then the whole bearing comes apart. Clean the metal bits with WD40 if they’re super rusty, but otherwise just pour your acetone or engine de-greaser into the container, chuck all the parts in there, shake it all around, pour it through a sieve to make sure you don’t lose any ball bearings, repeat until clean, leave to dry, reassemble, re-lube and you’ve got as-new bearings. You can’t clean them properly unless you take them apart completely. I’ve had a set of Bones Super Swiss 6 for well over a decade and this is how I’ve maintained them 👍🏻

    I've always completely broken down the bearings during cleaning. Sheilds off, crowns off, balls out... Cleaned with the purest isopropyl alcohol I could get, making sure everything was cleaned. If your just shaking the bearings around you're not getting everything out. Once clean and dry i then lube it up with Teflon. Bearings usually last me for a couple years, with few exceptions, and I don't even buy super expensive sets maybe $20 to $30 max

    I thought this is a new video.. but it isn't. However I want to share my method how to clean my bearings:
    First of all I do 95% streetskating and have used my first bearing about 4 years! (2 years intensive). The bearings (Titus Tornados [20€]) still roll to this day! I've changed them recently to (Modus Titanium [40€]), but use the Titus once in my cruiser wheels :D.
    1. Fist step is to take them apart (if possible, the Titus once aren't)
    2. Then take them under flooding water and spin them
    3. Take orange concentrate and spray it on the bearings, then spin them
    4. wash them under flooding water again
    5. repeat it until you feel like, there isn't any or only a litte bit of resistance left
    6. dry them with a paper towel
    7. dry them completely with a hair dryer
    8. put Bones Speed Cream on 2 opposite spots in the bearing (only 2-3 drops total). (If you have a closed front, than insert the speed cream from the back into the small slot)
    9. spin it, if it isn't smooth or quiet, add more
    10. finished
    I skated the Titus once in rain, too. I've avoided it but it did happened sometimes. They have no rust! I tried to clean them every time I've skated in the rain but even on my holiday-trip to Finland (I'm from Germany) I've skated through heavy rain and they didn't build up rust. (I had no cleaning products for the skateboard with me)
    I've done the cleaning about every 2 Month in the last 2 years and it has worked fine (However, I don't know if it's the method or the bearings :D). They are definitely loud but roll resistance free except of one bearing (there is a little bit of resistance, happened in the last 3 month. After that I switched to new bearings (wanted to try out some other brand))
    The old onces spin about min.30-60sec., but they were worn in. The new onces shorter, but that doesn't show how they perform with body weight. Both roll great, but the new once are a lot quieter.
    I did this with my new Modus bearings yesterday, too. (because of a lot of dirt, salt, and water).
    PS: You have to skate them for 1-2 sessions after the cleaning, then they spin a lot longer again.

    • @Dr_Footbrake
      @Dr_Footbrake 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      xX12VincEXx are you doing your spin test with the wheel on the axle? It’s not the best test as it’ll be the inside of the bearing cage spinning on the axle as opposed to the bearing itself spinning (if that makes sense). Modus Titanium’s rock though 💪🏼

    I've tried the bones cleaning kit. Used denatured like you did. It didn't work. After disassembly found that the nylon cages still had build-up stopping the bearings. Ultimately, Bottle of acetone and a bowl for the steel, and soap and water for shields/cage worked. There's videos showing how to do legit deep-cleaning of bearings. Don't fall for sponsored gimmicks.

  • @AnthonyTran
    @AnthonyTran 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I paid top dollar for Bone's labriyinth bearings and maintained them using the kit but they still eventually seized up. Any idea why? I did use a blow dryer to dry the bearings but I don't think that should affect it. I'd love to not be wasteful and be able to use a set of bearings for months but I'm not confident in the longevity of bearings, even with proper maintenance.

      Hi Anthony!! I don't think bearings are as good as they used to be. I still think Bones are the best bearings but I used to get at least six months to a year out of bearings without even cleaning them and I used to skate way more. Now I clean them about every three months or so and I don't think they spin as well as they used to. End crotchety old man rant!

  • @typ044
    @typ044 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cleaning worn out bearings isnt going to make them roll like new, cleaning them occasionally before they are worn out will prolong their life for sure. And even though your worn bearings didnt roll much further, they will still last longer than if you hadnt cleaned and relubed them.Once the balls and race are worn they are garbage, unless youre broke and just want to squeeze some life out of them and happen to have solvent and lube on hand.
    Also acetone will do a better job at cleaning and last longer because you will use less, its a more aggresive solvent, and I save the stuff from the second rinse to use as the first rinse the next time I clean bearings, no reason to toss the second or third rinse, it will still cut grease just as well as clean stuff.MEK works great but is nasty stuff and costs more, plus if you ever smell it youll never want to use it again....not that acetone smells like fresh picked roses but compared to MEK it almost does lol.Personally I use brake cleaner, its cheap and works great. Or on the very unlikely chance you know someone with a secret stash of 1,1,1 trichlorethane and hate the ozone its great stuff.
    Its cool that they sent you the kit, and I liked that you were honest with the review instead of pandering for more product, nice job !

    Air compressor and sewing machine oil.
    I'n 26 years of skating I've tried most bearing brands and all the kits(i know of) the cremes/lubes, shields, no shields along with all the novice mistakes like trying WD-40 when I was 9, and I will never use any other method besides air compressor and sewing machine oil.
    FYI: I've yet to try Oust bearings...That's pretty much the only avenue I've not ventured down...yet.

    most decent baring are made from stainless steel, so rust should be too much of a problem id have started with a light coating of WD40 then moved them around a bit just to help move around any rust / oxidation then clean them with warm soapy water(id use distilled water as it shouldn't cause rust/oxidation if that water gets trapped inside) then continue on with the rest of what rad rat did here, another thing if any of you have or know someone with access to a "Parts Cleaner" get them to drop your barrings in for 10-15 min that would do a better job at removing any unwanted crap in the barrings. WD40 is a great tool for skaters when used correctly, one of the great properties of WD40 is that it is a penetrating oil, as in it will work its self between metal and rust and get it freed up, however that will back fire after a while if you dont remove it, this why barrings seem to improve for a bit with WD40 but then lock up. point being dont be afraid to use WD40 (or another similar product) as long as your prepared to remove it and re-lubricate the barrings. also if you cant get speed cream or another brand name skate barring lub you can always use a light engine oil, id use a synthetic 5w20 apply with a paint brush or in a throw away container (just drip a bit on each barring then move them around to spread it)

    Your premis on distance and spin time is completely wrong. When you do these experiments, not only do you want to test them dirty, and lubricated, but you also want to test them completely dry. If you want the bearings to last, and you don't care about speed, you use a grease. Oil works, but breaks down quickly under a load. I think you'll find that if you really want your bearings to last, and you don't care about speed, you should be using a grease. I use white lithium, some use silicone. I believe there is also a brand on the market that is made specifically for skate bearings.
