Good points all of them. Nothing bogus here. I especially like the methodical approach, doing the same things race after race. It helps keep you from overlooking things and key in on winning possibilities when they come along. What it really comes down to is how much time you're willing to invest. I found that to do this right took a lot of time, and it occurred to me that I was better off running my own race, so to speak, getting a 9 to 5, moving up the ladder, and retiring with a pension and health insurance. But an occasional winning bet every now and then is confirmation that I'm still in tune with life. In fact, I found that predicting the outcome of a race was actually more valuable to me than the money. But to each their own, and good luck to all. Just don't let it control you...
For sprint races, if you take the two top horses in speed ratings and the two top horses in early pace ratings and work from there, you really can't go wrong. In some of the cases, there will be a crossover - one or two horses will have both one of the top two speed and pace ratings. If that occurs, sometimes a great betting opportunity becomes available. Back in the late '40's & early 50's, there was only an eight percent takeout. Now, it's real tough to stay ahead of the game.
Joe..I agree with what you said in the first 30 seconds of the video..Looking over a race to long can be a bad thing..Because you start to over think it. I can usually study a race in a couple of minutes..Pace is key for me from the get go. Who is going to get the lead and what kind of pressure will the leader get..If there are 6 front running styles and one closer in the race. It could easily set up for the closer..Value is key also. I won't bet a horse to win if odds are to low.
Thank you so much. You reminded me of so much. I use to go to the track many years ago and an older cigar smoking Italian g(right out of the movies) took me under his wing and taught me the very things that you talk about here. Back in the day I would catch the daily double two out of three visits. I became a casino gambler but I do miss the track. Thanks again!
Winner of a video, I've been looking for "handicapping confidential pdf" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Deyandon Harrowing Dominance - (search on google )? It is a great exclusive guide for discovering how to get exclusive horse betting tips without the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my m8 got amazing results with it.
The best handicapping tool to use each and every race is eliminate what horses have little chance of winning. THAN handicap the race. The things I pay attention to in a horse race is did the horse finish within 2 lengths or less in its last race, who are the horses with the best early speed and the horses that have the best finish speeds. This is a big help in sprints and routes both. After that I look for major rider changes.
thanks for your time and effort. Thanks for devoting your time, resources, energy, focus, and attention to all us youngsters that thrive on this education. love your website.
Joe I saw your video yesterday. And for some reason I ended at the sports book. I used to be a mega winner at Mountaineer with my Trifecta box with 4 horses averaging a 160-270 win. I did pay attention to all the details and become winner. But I lost it. Kept loosing on every track. Betting just the odds. Yesterday I remember your hints and paid attention to the form when it came to Class. Spotted a horse that was 7-1.Won a Exacta worth $85 investing only $6. Thank You
Hey Joe......An often overlooked handicapping angle involves what I call the 3rd race back angle and here's how it works; Look for a horse in its 3rd race down on the sheet and find one that finished within 2 lengths of the horse that won, then go to the top race and see if the horse either flashed early speed or closed significantly in the stretch finishing 4th or worse. Hopefully the 3 top races were run within the last 60 days, (the rule is more accurate that way) . The distance must be the same with the time of the top race faster than the 3rd back. If you locate that horse it will invariably run to the same Beyer speed figure or higher as its 3rd race back regardless of what it showed on the top 2 races. This angle was discovered about 50 years ago long before the computer simply by studying old Racing Form results, and finding a solid and accurate angle. Also, you were correct about Class horses in a race when you remember the 1st Commandment of horse racing; CLASS OVERCOMES ALL.........................good luck
Date of last race..within 21 days a dangerous horse if his last outing was a good trip especially if he won ( a good sign) and is in the same class TODAY. If he was passing horses and was gaining in the stretch look out. Where he finished on the board does not matter if he was "in" the last race. Don't discount weight especially in longer distances. Many, many more that experienced handicappers can cover in a glance on the sheet.
Sometimes there is an advantage to a little bit of Knowledge from prior experience . Today at Del Mar in the fifth race I had the six which was the winner. Mario gutierez was riding and what I liked about him was it look like he was a legit closer and there was a lot of early speed in the race is a mile race Mario was a Kentucky Derby winning jockey on I'll have another and knows how to rate a horse and today you got more than 10 to 1 Mario gutierez pretty nice score.
I didnt say that.I do use Santa Anita as a benchmark. Also class is a factor. I make my real money in Madians with only workouts. Try it, find the fastest horse for the course in that class or higher. Watch the race without betting. Do it 10 times. Should be in the money 70 to 80% of the time. Keep in mind I dont bet $2.00. 50 or a 100 across.
Really great tips...I'd also add to check the fastest recent workouts, I've studied it a bit and usually the top 2 or 3 couple 4F workout times end up producing the winner of the race. You can even add speed figure points to it. Equibase has a neat video on here saying how they get their figure, basically for every 2F a quarter second difference in time = 10 speed points. So like @ 8F, 1 second difference = 10 pts,@6F.75 second = 10 pts. And 4F = .50 second/10 pts. So say the fastest 4F workout in the field was a 49.0, the second was a 49.5, that's the equivalent of 10 speed points! So if horse A ran the 49.0 with a speed figure of 85, and horse B ran the 49.5 but has a speed figure of 90. If you add the 10 points, horse A actually now has a faster speed figure @ 95!

Hey Folks..........I've only been doing this for 50 yrs and I learn something everyday, but if I can let me give you something to think about from a guy that's had the stuffings knocked out of him a few times. Remember, the best handicappers in the world win 1 out of every 4 races so demand odds of 4 to 1 or higher on your horse or simply don't bet. There are roughly 100 races a day in the U S so you can demand the odds you need to win.........its not against the law to sit chilly and wait, and its a lot more fun to win than to lose. 95 % of all you hear and read about thoroughbred horse racing will direct you straight to a logical favorite that a high school sophomore can find, but the other 5% of the game is full of GOLD NUGGETS that I was taught over the years or just simply learned thru osmosis. I'm getting older now and since I'm not going to write books on the subject or try to sell something I could help a young aspiring handicapper possibly make a few bucks.........I'm serious also.......If you have any questions regarding horse race handicapping I will try my very best to guide you thru the maze. E-mail me at cneedy55@insightbb.com and type horse racing in the subject box and I'll try my very best to help you. MSW, MC, ALLOWANCE, and CLAIMING races or all fair game so give it a try. @@lyvonrodgers8846 yes I believe they call those key races. If you spot one of those where potentially all the horses or most step up next race this could be huge. Drf.com has a free watch feature that will alert you when the horse races next
There are many things to learn in racing. If you find anything useful in the video use it. One main thing is that racing is made of two major divisions: Profitcapping and Handicapping. Profitcapping is the methods to predict the profit to be made over months and years in the future and has nothing to do with selecting horses. Handicapping is methods to predict the order of finish of races and has nothing to do with money. Go to www.horseracinganswers.com and learn Profitcapping to have a powerful firm understanding of racing.
Class changes aren't that big of a deal really, I think too many people put too much weight on it. Lasix can make a difference, but I wouldn't use it as a justification for a bet on a long-shot. Also, I'm pretty sure that the favorite only wins like 33% of the time? To be honest, I put way more weight on their last races and distances and the track condition.

Good advice for novices, but nothing here vet handicappers don't already know. And no tips at all to identify legitimate longshots; follow just these basics and you'll usually get only short prices. Layoffs and layoff patterns among trainers are a good tactic for finding legit longshots. Good to know which trainers bring them back ready to race off workouts as opposed to who likes to race their horses back into shape, scoring after two or three races. Also, don't toss a horse because it's going an unfamiliar distance or trying first time on a surface. Give it a hard look instead. If it's doing so at the appropriate class level the trainer knows something you don't know. And speaking of class, get to know class equivalents between different tracks; 20K claiming at NYRA isn't the same class of horse as in Maryland for example. It's not just about numbers, and this can help you to identify valid horses shipping in, particularly when they're coming up from an inferior track.
wow..now that I have heard your insightful tips, I think I will become rich!! If you don't know in which direction the wind is blowing; who the speed horses are; how many speed horses there are; how the track is handling; is the track filled with moisture: the preferred distance of each horse....and so many more issues. Let me be specific. I can tell you with certainty, that in a 7 furlong race at let's say Aqueduct outer dirt track, if there is a strong head wind, (blowing into the horses face at the beginning of the race) and there are at least 2 or 3 speed horses who will duel for the lead, then, guaranteed, NONE of those 2-3 horses will win. UNLESS... that horse is totally outclassing the other horses...but, that won't occur. Speed duels into the wind, especially in a 7 f race or even more so, in a mile, (one turn race) will cause those front runners dueling for the lead to FAIL. This is a certainty. You will get fractions like 24.2 48.3 113. 3 and 138 in the mile. The speed will collapse and closers who like slow early fractions who will likely be long shots will surprise. Now, that is handicapping science. Think it's not so? Try this. Go to Belmont. When the wind is coming out of the south, (from behind the grandstand blowing northerly), the speed horses will win. You will see a mediocre early fraction like 22.3-23 and then a slow middle fraction like 24.2 (47-47.2) and then a relatively fast final 2 furlongs of 24.2-25 (111.4 to 112.2). The race usually proceeds in this fashion. The speed will go out. NOTE: (Speed horses that do well when they get 22.1 45.1 110.4 will NOT do well on this day). As they begin the turn you will notice that horses tracking the speed will begin to make a move, closing the gap on the speed until....they straighten out in the stretch and the speed that looked like it would cave in, begins to take off again and stretches out the lead. Just go to Belmont and check it out. Also, if the wind is coming out of the south east to north west, you will get the fastest times that Belmont throws out. You will notice that you won't see a 21.4 or 22 early fraction, but you will get a 45.3 middle and a 109.3 final. So, the speed increases out of the turn across the wire although it seems like the wind is in their face.....but, it isn't. Look at the construction of the grandstand to figure that one out. I am great and no one understands this, but me.

Add fitness to handicapping and BINGO, winners galore....Jim
