- In this quick video I show how to reset the password on a Catalyst 9200 or 9300 series Cisco switch. This also works for 3650 and 3850's running the latest code. The industrial switches (IE2000, IE3000, etc) should do the same thing but its been a while since I've done this on any of them. Remember there really isn't a default username and password so its up to you to create and configure one after you get back into the switch or router :-)

Mate you really saved me. For some reason our Catalyst lost the user. It didn't exist anymore. This finally gave me a chance to restore it.

This method also works for a C9400. Don't forget to remove the standby SUP before performing the boot. Awesome tutorial.
this is probably the most important step.
Reconnect the power cord to the switch or the active switch. As soon as the System LED blinks, press and release the Mode button 2-3 times. The switch enters the ROMMON mode.

I believe that 9300's have two great features (same as the 3850s) Dockers and Per Port Packet Captures :)

Question: How about for switches in stack, what is the initial process? Should i on/off all ? or keep members turn off and do off/on Master?
Shutdown the switches and disconnect the stack
it shows these files
xmodem[0]: (read-only)
null[1]: (read-write)
bs[3]: (read-only)
flash[18]: (read-only)
tftp[19]: (read-write)
when i enter dir

If there were 2 or more 9300's in a stack, how would the procedure be different (if at all)? Would you perform this on the master?

In my switch, password recovery mecanism is disabled then how can i reset password..
Its works but when i want activate the "EXEC" mod i have a beautiful "acces denied" with the same password , i am a noob on switch, i just want reset the switch in factory default :\

Hey, I'm quite new with cisco routers and this maybe an stupid question but how to i get to use the console? like I have a PC with serial port and all but what do i need to download to be able to use the cisco console? Knowing that would really save my life lol
I would get started with putty or a similar application. Search for "how to connect to a Cisco console port" and there will certainly be a few videos to get you started

If you reset like this you then load the existing configuration and reset the password. Configuration is saved.
Hi, I've followed your guide and I'm unable to go into configure terminal after I copy startup config to the running config.

You need to change the passwords, etc immediately after doing to copy to ensure you can get back in. Username/ passwords as well as enable passwords will need updated.

@@ziqex I would copy the startup config to TFTP, etc and go through it line by line to figure out why and remove what's preventing you.
I’ve been trying this and I get stuck at creating a new password. Right after copying the startup to the running config, I’ll try to make a new password and it says invalid input with the marker on the first or second letter. any ideas?
Did you do a "config t" before attempting to change the password?

You can get the software from Cisco TAC or your cisco account team
My config file has the username and password built in. Once I go through these steps minus setting a username and password, I get back to where it's time for me to log in and I can't log-in. Any one have a solution?
You have to boot the switch, load that config and them immediately issue the command to update the username and password to a known value.
How it will help in case of console password?
This will also allow you to clear console passwords as you are preventing the loading of the startup configuration all together.
If you would like to just wipe the switch type "factory-reset all". This will erase everything in the switch flash, including the firmware.
can i use the GUI on these?

well the password didnt work, changed it three times per this video and no dice

its like I am not even inputting the command as the switch boots up normally with the old config
I believe it is. I did this 2 times just now and the first time using all lowercase didn't work. Used cap letters and now i'm in!
