This is really helpful. Mouthpieces are this black art where sizing is inconsistent with model numbers, and rim shapes aren't represented anywhere.

I really love the feel of my Schilke 51D on my small-bore tenor. I will be switching to a large bore soon and I was wondering what a comparable mouthpiece with a large bore shank would be. Thank you for the videos!

The 51D is available in large shank as well; mouthpieces sizes in the Bach 5-6 range typically cross over between small and large shank. I will say that for my taste the 51D can be a bit deep for some large bore tenor setups; do you know what you are moving to for a large bore tenor? Depending on the horn a Schilke 51 might also be a good fit; it has a shallower cup then the 51D that may provide a bit more of the compression and feedback needed but still retain the same rim feel...

I've been using the 51D since like 7th grade, so forever. 😅 I like it's feel for lower notes but some of the higher stuff is a bit harder to get feeling and sounding really good from the deep cup. my horn is a medium bore (.525) trombone. good stuff. hope I can get a large bore one day.

Rather than choosing a mouthpiece, perhaps it's better to choose a mouthpiece diameter, then acquire variations, such as the ones offered by Denis Wick. He offers variations on the cup depth, throat, and backbore for a particular diameter, which allow you to move from second to first part on a mpc with a tighter throat/backbore with the same diameter.

If one could go half way between the 5g and the Allessi, it would be about right. The perfect mouthpiece does not exist. A good test would be how well it works in the ensembles you most like to play with. Thanks for your honest trial and opinions.

It depends on your development as a player, your trombone, the group you're in, and the part you play. Denis Wick offers mouthpieces of one diameter with different throats and backbores for when you change parts.

@@davidbucher4095 that is spot on. More openness from mouthpiece makers is welcome. I do think rim size and inner bite affect my playing the most.

What are you playing for a mouthpiece right now and what are you playing on for a horn?

So what do you think of the denis wick series of mouthpieces? I just ordered a Denis Wick 4AL, trying to find something that might help me pin down articulation and make the higher range more smoothe. My main mouthpiece is a shilke 51d.
    Also I play euphonium

Did you try the wick before you purchased? I find with the wicks the flat rims my attacks are pretty bad

You should do a comparison of Bach artisan and regular mouthpieces. Like an artisan 5G and a regular 5g
