    Hope you guys enjoyed the video! What part of the mouthpiece do you think changes up your playing the most?

      AKCEuph I am a french hornist, so I am accustomed to using a very small mouthpiece, and I have played trumpet as well on a 3c mouthpiece, which was ok but I struggled with endurance on it because it was so "huge" in comparison to what I was used to. Recently my Grandpa had his double belled euphonium refurbished from WWII, and I would like to play it but the euphonium mouthpiece is just impossible for me. Can I use a trumpet mouthpiece on a euphonium, and if so, what would you recommend?

      Caryn Nieland you can’t use a trumpet mouthpiece for a euphonium. The bore is much larger on euphonium so the trumpet mouthpiece would just rattle around. And if you did find a way to make it fit the tone would be terrible because the mouthpiece isn’t accustomed to the instrument

      Each part plays a different role. Rim size, bore, cup depth etc. all work together.

    As a woodwind player where brass is a foreign field I enjoyed this very much. Easy to digest.

    Very informative and well presented. Thanks! Will look at your other two. Would be interested in the comparison between euphonium and trombone mouthpiece needs and demands as I play both.

    I am the proud owner of seven tuba mouthpieces.
    I know this is too few.
    There are players out there who can shame me with the vast quantity of mouthpieces that they, themselves, keep and enjoy.
    I use a Vincent Bach 24AW and the other six mouthpieces are from different manufacturers.
    These infamous six call to me every so often.
    They believe they are better than the 24AW.
    Sometimes I give in to them, but soon return to my Bach, having been disappointed by one or other of the six.
    This is not a sales pitch for Vincent Bach, rather that changing a mouthpiece is deeply personal and not always the answer that you seek.
    I liken it to the putter in golf. Most serious golfers own many putters and fall in love and out of love with them over a season.
    Enjoyed Aaron’s overview.

    I play the Denis Wick SM 3.5 and I think it's very nice. For me it's in the most of time perfect.I think with the SM 3.5, I've a good tone but aswell a “big“ rage. I'm happy with it so I can suggest it to the most of you.

    I'm a casual player. I play a vintage 1938 E.K.BLESSING artist model. I've been using the ubiquitous Bach 12C (Mount Vernon) same horn and mouthpiece my dad played (I inherited these). I also have a Mt. Vernon 7 and King M31. I keep going back to the 12C. I tried a 6 1/2 AL but felt it was to big. I'm section lead on our community band so I tend to get in the upper register a bit (Bb, C, D range). The 12C gets me there but I don't get the sound quality I'd like. It gets a like airy and buzzy. I will be getting a King 3B soon that has a Bach 5G (iirc) and look forward to the mouthpiece matched to the king. There aren't many places near me to try mouthpieces.

    I have a mouth piece that is perfect for me. It has no markings as to what it is. I can't find another to purchase that matches, after going to good music stores. What to do?????

    Thanks for making this. I was wondering if you could help me with something? A friend of mine found a Sousaphone but it's missing the mouthpiece. The Sousaphone looks a little on the smaller side. Are mouthpiece shanks standardized in size? I'm wondering if any Sousaphone mouthpiece will fit in the leadpipe or if there are different size mouthpieces that are needed for smaller or larger Sousaphones? Thanks man!

  • @camerong3758
    @camerong3758 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    ya, I use a Schilke 51D and i seem to have endurance issues. Probably because the rim is very flat. Hopefully I can find a better mouthpiece sometime but I think the endurance is made up for by tone. IG

    • @AKCEuph
      @AKCEuph  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find that often times endurance problems with the 51D tend to come from its depth as well. It has a huge cup and a very open throat which leads to people working really hard to play it. I know I don't like to play it for anything where I have to be very loud (Marching/Brass Band) because of how hard I have to work. It is a great mouthpiece on Trombone to get a richer tone though! Thanks for stopping by!

    What mouthpiece you use? I use the Denis Wick SM4UM. Most of the time, it works pretty good for me 90% of the time. Occasionally endurance becomes an issue partially no thanks to the times which my Community Band tunes itself 20 cents sharp! Very informative video.

      Thanks for checking out the video! I used to use the SMU3 for a long time (4 is too small for me) but I switched to the Warburton Demondrae Thurmon mouthpiece about a year ago.

    I am no expert, but I do have an interest in the physics of brass instruments, know some of the experts in the field, read lots of books and papers on the subject, and attend lectures and such, especially about mouthpieced. One thing I learned from that is how far from reality most artists are in their "understanding" of the various attributes of mouthpieced. They confuse how something feels to them and what the actual unbiased cause and effect is. I am not commenting necessarily in anything said in this particular video, but an rather pointing out that even many exalted artists say say some very untrue things about mouthpieces, so the listener should be wary and take such advice with a grain of salt....

    What are your thoughts of the Denis Wick 4M? I got it for free, but the mouthpiece I use currently is a 51D. How big would the difference/transition be? Would I be able to use both for different situations?
    Thank you!

  • @charlesperron2133
    @charlesperron2133 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the video. I checked it out looking for information specifically about the difference between a trombone and euphonium mouthpiece. I had read that euphonium specific mouthpieces typically have a more conical cup, but you mentioned in the video that you found a conical mouthpiece to be more direct, but allow less flexibility. Are you saying there are really no distinctions between trombone and euphonium mouthpieces other than personal preference? When talking about cup depth, you said, "...you want to go almost as wide and big as you can..." Why? I mean, if there is pressure in a group to play with a big dark sound, then sure, go big, but I would think the cup depth would be determined by what kind of sound you are looking for. And my last question is about the interior curve of the rim into the cup (called the "bite"). The sharper the bite, the crisper the articulation, but as you said, if you go too far with it, playing becomes uncomfortable. So, back to the question of trombone vs. euphonium mouthpieces, would you want a sharper or softer bite on the rim? Thanks! And thanks again for the video.

      Charles Perron hey, with me when it comes to picking between Euph and bone mouthpieces there really isn’t a huge difference in my mind other than preference. Most time on trombone I’ll go for a smaller rim and smaller cup for a more direct sound. You’re also right about the cup depth, it’s mostly what is most comfortable, at the time of recording this video I was all about creating as dark of a sound as possible in all situations, the more jazz and orchestral playing I do the more I’ve been realizing that that’s not always the case.
      Mouthpieces are difficult to advise because at the end of the day it’s what works for you in the given situation.

    I really like this video. Excellent explanation Aaron. I was think if someone can give me an advice. I'm playing trombone with 12C bach mouthpiece and I''m thinking to change it up. Is 6 1/2 AL good step to go or the change is too big and can affect my playing.
    Thank you

      jacob meska thanks for checking out the video. I'm not super familiar with the Yamaha mouthpieces but from what I've been able to find and couple good mouthpieces to try out may be the Denis Wick SM or SMU series mouthpieces, or perhaps the very trusted Schilke 51D. Hope this helps!

    I'm a euphonium player and play a 51D. I am interested in a SM3 or 4 or a similar Mead mouthpiece. Whats best for me to play high and low alike yet still allows me to play a loud and rich tone?

    • @AKCEuph
      @AKCEuph  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SM mouthpieces are great! I played the SM3.5 and the SMU3 for awhile myself before switching to a different mouthpiece. I highly suggest trying them out! I mean Steven Mead plays them, they can't be too bad right?
      Unfortunately, the search for the perfect mouthpiece can take some time. What you are looking for (which in a nut shell could be described as the mouthpiece that lets you do it all!) may not be the exact same as what creates that for me. Try out as many mouthpieces as you can and see if any of them help you create the sound and responses you want.
      Some people find that to be the SM4 some find it to be the 51D, others like myself find it in another mouthpiece. Its a pain in the butt process, but like when you find your soulmate, you hold on to that mouthpiece and marry it! lol

    I swapped about 9 months ago to a wick size 1 and it definitely helps with tone and low range but endurance in the extreme high range ie. above high F is non existent I can hit one high G and that is it. Anyone know why?

    • @AKCEuph
      @AKCEuph  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Euphonium Master 1 is a very large mouthpiece so your high range will absolutely take a hit because the rim is so large. (You’re playing a bass trombone mouthpiece)
      Most professional Euphonium players (to my knowledge) play on a rim closer to a size 3 or 4.
