My friends and I saw "Darling" like 16 times and this was in the days when you actually left your home and had to sit in theater with strangers, etc. I think Julie Christie and Peter O'Toole were revelations to me as a kid: they were both so beautiful and their movies so entertaining.
I love "Darling". When I was 17 I spent a summer working in Switzerland in 1970 and didn't speak German. My last week there I was dying to hear English and found "Darling" playing in Zurich. I didn't know a thing about the movie going in but I came out a life long fan of Julie, Dirk Bogarde and director John Schlesinger.
Most beautiful actress of all time in my opinion, she lit up the screen like no other, it was ethereal, especially in Dr Zchivago, no one could hold a candle to her.
@@biggreenbananas8929 Liz Taylor certainly was a very close second, as they say Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But I think Julie Christie still takes the prize.
I think that Bathsheba in "Far From the Madding Crowd" just edged it over Lara. No wonder three men fell for her - and no doubt most of the men in the audiences, too.
you know once I start listening to her, I don't care what she looks like. what one considers beautiful or not, disappears or is emphasized in the presence of them. and it doesn't matter what she looks like on the outside, she will always be beautiful.
Unsurprisingly well-informed. Surprisingly and delightfully modest. Unsurprisingly bored and fed up with predictable, sexist question about whether she is bothered by the ageing process. Unsurprisingly cringing at the comment that it is 'lovely to see you blush'. Oh gawd, the male interviewers in those days just couldn't help themselves could they? Why destroy what was a good interview by attempting to reduce this intelligent actress to her looks by inane comments and questions. No wonder she did so few interviews.
Great interview her humanitarian priorities go before the 'attractive star' utmost respect for this great person her age or whatever is more than secondary all the best to Julie Christie !
my all time favorite,,the total package,,beauty, talent, intelligent, sexy, compassionate, grounded, iconic etc etc.... in person she's even more beautiful..incandescent!
You summed it up so accurately. She was the total package. She's also a very private person, a kind of actress equivalent of Kate Bush. an abundance of talent, a fascinating person to listen to.
she's always been gorgeous.... no matter what age. that's something that not everyone has... it's her personality and her manner as well as anything else. she's just got IT.
Beautiful, smart and not afraid to get a little dirty.left hollyweird at the height of her fame to live on a farm,no air conditioning, hangs her clothes on a line.
The way she commands the screen when she was telling the joke about the man and the woman travelling in a train. She has this innate ability to hold our attention. You dare not not take your eyes off her. And I think this is why she's a terrific actress.
two thumps up for Julie Christie's commitment to a cause rather forgotten. The Cambodian Genocide is hardly remembered. Why? There are hundreds of films, books, memorials on the holocaust. And more coming. What about these people, though?
LOOK AT HER! I've always said, even her name sounds like something that blazes in the dark. People went to see "Dr. Zhivago" just to look at Julie Christie. I must have seen "Darling" 20 times with my friends the year it came out. We wanted to BE Julie Christie. She grew even more beautiful and became an even finer actress as the years went on. If you haven't seen her and Alan Bates (and Glenda Jackson) in "Return of the Soldier" try to do so. Also Christie and Alan Bates (and Claire Bloom) in "Separate Tables" is something to behold. Or Julie Christie in "Heat and Dust" where she even speaks a little Hindi. Or her comeback movie, "Afterglow" (though it has the ugliest ending of any romantic comedy in history), or "Away from Her." She has a 20 minute segment in a New York Stories movie with Shia LaBouff (but he just doesn't have the star quality, the charisma to match Julie Christie, so he fades into the wallpaper) that is good.
@Jarred Knox In another movie that ending might be appropriate, but the movie is presented and treated AND delivered as a sexy, romantic comedy. This is not a bittersweet little ending. It's a kick in the groin to watch Phyllis destroyed like that.
@Jarred Knox The movie was presented as a romantic comedy, and it was just that until the director kicked the audience in the balls with leaving the most enchanting character in the film screaming in emotional horror at the final scene. That's just wrong seven ways from sunday.
Apologies to Emily Maitlis who would never do the following-: Emily Maitlis interviewing Colin Friel: Emily: It is so lovely to see you blush, Colin Colin: squirms Emily: As the actor who was the face of an era, are you concerned about the ageing process, Colin? Colin: No, I am concerned about people asking me questions about whether I am concerned about the ageing process.
Yes, cringeworthy questions. But at that time, fairly standard questions to ask female film stars. Obligatory almost. Julie Christie fielded them with aplomb and, notably, did not answer them despite Aspel persisting. Too smart! (Otherwise a good interview) See the interview Michael Parkinson conducted with a young Helen Mirren - same approach. The obligatory questions about looks.
There was NO British woman hotter in the 1960's than Julie Christe. Also, that "look" that the British girls had in the 1960's (wearing ties and mini-skirts) was SO-attractive, I wish it would come back !!!
Julie Christie is great looking at age 47 and has a nice sense of humour. She is so caring about the "poor" in the world. I didn´t yet know that she is british and not american. Anyway she is a famous vegetarian her live long and we should think about our own nutrition to perform better for ourselves and for the health and charisma and spirituel healing of the whole world.
Hi, i would really really appreciate it if you could post the part of Terry Jones' interview too, as it's so rare and probably impossible to find it somewhere else!! I beg you please!!!!!!!!
@defundthewar l was puzzled for the first few seconds of the clip but l saw immidiately after, nose ,lips, specially the eyes, it's unmistakable! 60' style or awfull 80', she just looks like a beautifull woman. Debra Winger though is a test both for sight and memory.
@defundthewar You are just blinded by this 80's trade mark awfull haircut on her. Block it and you will see that it's the same face. Oh, and if her face in '88 is a result of surgery than that is not a surgent but a magician! Since in 2011 surgeon's work on a 40 yearold woman is pretty visible than in 80's her surgeon would be nothing less then a miracle worker:)
Julie Christie has had quite a career, always choosing her roles carefully and acting when and IF she cares to. There isn't a role she turned down that hurt her integrity. As for the celebrity gossip you seem to cling to, the last I heard Julie Christie doesn't share your opinion her career.
Julie is a goddess.. her performance in Zhivago was monumental
A Beautiful Performance!! 💙💙💙
She is completely gorgeous at age 48. A truly interesting individual and a fascinating actress to boot.
My friends and I saw "Darling" like 16 times and this was in the days when you actually left your home and had to sit in theater with strangers, etc. I think Julie Christie and Peter O'Toole were revelations to me as a kid: they were both so beautiful and their movies so entertaining.
still,, waiting on the planetaery# votes,+discussion??
I'm old, but I remember when we saw "Darling" in 1965 we didn't just want to look like Julie Christie. We wanted to BE Julie Christie.

Not only is she exquisitely beautiful, but she also possesses a raging intelligence. What a combo!
+Rafael Storm and the boys were drooling...damn, she is very special
Lol
Most beautiful actress of all time in my opinion, she lit up the screen like no other, it was ethereal, especially in Dr Zchivago, no one could hold a candle to her.
Sophia Loren and a few others come to mind but she's on a very short list.
What about Elizabeth Taylor?
@@biggreenbananas8929 Liz Taylor certainly was a very close second, as they say Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But I think Julie Christie still takes the prize.

Julie is "LARA" for ever (Dr Jivago), my favorite movie...
Surprisingly well-informed...great to be intelligent and beautiful. Great interview!

One of the true Great beauties of cinema.
Absolutely amazing! She is the English Rose
Thank you for this - she's a great lady. Talented, very watchable - and still as gorgeous as ever!
Aspel is a good interviewer. Asks a question and lets them finish without interrupting. 😆
what a charming woman!
Greatest actress of the 20th century!
WE need more people like Julie. Stunning person.
Great interview her humanitarian priorities go before the 'attractive star' utmost respect for this great person her age or whatever is more than secondary all the best to Julie Christie !

I assume she is a private person...!!..XD
Thanks so much for sharing this!! So rare to have Julie in an interview. She's delightful.
Isn't she gorgeous... Love & light from Florianópolis, Brazil.
such a naturally elegant lady
Warren blew it!
My favourit actress since I see her in 'Doctor Zhivago'.
The most beautiful woman-actress-woman of the 20th-21st centuries.
Brilliant talent and breathtakingly beautiful.
As a boy, I was so in love with her in Dr. Zhivago...she will never know:-(
To say she is lovely would be an understatement.

Julie Christie, Helen Mirren, Charlotte Rampling, Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Smith and Judi Dench... Amazing english actresses!
Julie and Rampling are by far the most beautiful though.
+Renan C. Maia And maybe she is an aussie......but let us throw in cate blanchett!
Vanessa Redgrave is stunningly beautiful!
Julie and Glenda Jackson stand out even amongst that impressive cast you mentioned.

I saw Darling in Amsterdam. What a revelation. And of course Lawrence of Arabia. And British kitchen sink films. What a revelation they all there.
