What is the Origin and Reason for Green Eyes?
Chapters:
0:00 Green Eyes
1:11 The Green-Eyed People of China
1:43 Genetics and Origins of Green Eyes
6:22 Reason for Green Eyes
When and where did green eyes first develop and for what reason? Now green eyes are the rarest eye colour, with only 2% of the entire world’s population having them. As a general breakdown of eye colour worldwide:
Brown eyes: 70 to 80%
Blue eyes: 8 to 10%
Hazel eyes: 5%
Amber eyes: 5%
Gray eyes: 3%
Green eyes: 2%
What’s your eye colour out of interest? Please let me know in the comments below… People of European descent represent the largest share of those with green eyes, and they are most common in Northern, Western and Central Europe. More specifically, Ireland, Scotland and other parts of northern Europe have the highest share of people with green eyes.
Iceland is one, with around 8-10% of men and 18-21% of women having them, and in the Netherlands, 6% of men and 17% of women have green eyes. In Europe more broadly, they're found in around 8 percent of the population. Among European Americans, green eyes are most common among those of Celtic and Germanic ancestry, at about 16%.
Even though they’re most common in Europe, people with green eyes can be found all over the world, even as far as remote parts of China. Liqian, a remote village in Western China, is known for its high percentage of people with green eyes and blond hair. Some suggest they’re descended from Roman soldiers who got stranded in China, but this isn’t proven. DNA results from 2010 that analysed these villagers did indicate that they are almost two thirds of Caucasian origin, potentially lending support to this Roman theory but it’s still debated.
Now what causes green eyes? Initially, scientists used to believe that eye colour in general was decided by two genes-one from each parent. Now, they know as many as 16 genes influence the amount of melanin produced by the iris, with the OCA2 and HERC2 genes heavily involved in eye colour. Melanin absorbs light, so irises with high amounts of melanin appear darker. These genes however interact in complex ways, and we are still trying to fully work out how this all works.

Khaki-green eyed Asian here - hello from Kazakhstan! 👋
Thanks. Hi from Scotland
TEXAN HERE: I have blond hair & green eyes. I'm genetically English, Scottish, Welsh & Irish. I'm the only person in my family with green eyes. Everyone else, on both sides have blue eyes. My son ended up with green eyes too.
Oh mind 😳. I am a first grade teacher and there was this boy in my class with beautiful dark green eyes.
His mom has dark blue eyes. The lady was beautiful and she would always pick her son from school so I had seen her a lot.
Than one day for a parent teacher meeting the mom was not able to show up, but the father did. That man had baby blue eyes. When he told me he was the father of that boy I couldn’t believe it.
He was a sweet man like the boy, so I felt bad for him and I told him that blue eye parents give birth to blue eye children. If both parents have blue eyes child would have blue eyes too.
He looked at me and smile, and said thank you for telling me this. And then told me that the child was from his first marriage with his first wife that passed away shortly after giving birth, and the lady who I thought was the mom was actually the step mom, and show me a picture of his second child with his current wife and that kid has blue eyes. He also show me a picture of his first wife and she had green eyes like my student.
I felt so embarrassed… but I know I did the right thing. So here I go again… if all your family have blue eyes on both sides… maybe they are not all of your family… do a 23 and me or something. Just saying.
@@fernathebest414Pretty sure eye color is not that cut and dry. Multiple genes determine eye color.

Fascinating, i had no idea hazel was more rare than blue
The color hazel is actually a light color of brown named after the color of the wood from the Hazel tree. What you are thinking of is probably central heterochromia.
Blue is the most common in the UK; it's in the 50 per cent region if grey is counted with it. Hazel is really the same as green; classed, together, as 'intermediate'.

My eyes are very green. I have had people complement me all my life. According to ancestry, I am Scottish, Irish, Welsh, and English. We have traced our family back to the 1500’s in England. My eyes change tone, blue green/green brown/green Hazel... depends on the lighting, mood etc...
@@garrybartlett6853same!!! My wife says that they change with my outfit lol
Probably because changes in eye color is usually related to diseases. There was a claim back in the day that up to 15% of caucasians could change eye color from brown to a lighter color later in life, but that was when midle-aged. So changes that early is rare as far as I know.
Should be noted I'm not an expert I just find the subject interresting.

I have blue eyes and I am Serbian.
I have green eyes, a beard (slightly reddish) and black hair, I was born in Rome. As a child I had very blonde hair, then it became dark in color
Isn’t that wild about the hair? My hair and my mothers were both blond as young children. It became all brown by the time I was 7.
My brother had that beautiful blonde hair that went mud coloured over time....
Dark hair with red through my hair. Golden brown eyes with flakes of green. Super blonde facial hair that’s almost platinum.
My Father is from Ireland & my Mum is from the Netherlands.
I have black hair a tan complexion like my father. I have light green eyes with yellow starburst surrounding my pupils.
I'm frequently asked if I'm wearing colored contacts.
I have tan skin and very light brown hair with blonde highlights from the sun which looks the color of caramel. My eyes look dark green most the time and sometimes gray in certain lightings. If I look in the mirror though, they have light brown around the pupils, then a ring of yellow, then lighter green which fades into darker green until a dark blue ring right around the edge of my iris. I call my eyes hazel green. Most of my family has hazel green eyes like mine with a couple with light blue eyes, a couple with dark blue hazel eyes (with a ring of brown around the pupil), and a couple with light brown eyes. I was born and raised in Texas, but my mother (hazel green eyes) is from Illinois and my father (hazel green-blue eyes) is from South Dakota. We all took a DNA test and we are mostly German (from both sides) and Polish (my mother’s side). We also have Austria, England, Ireland, Whales, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, and the Baltic countries in our ancestry. Interestingly enough, I was the only person to get 2% Irish and 2% Baltic countries in my ancestry, funny how DNA can simply not show up in one generation and then resurface in one out of 2 children in the next. On both sides my ancestors were early Wisconsin settlers which made sense since both my parents could already trace their family trees back to there. They realized shortly after they married when going through family albums that older family members were from the same areas of Wisconsin and we all wonder if my parents are maybe 4th or 5th cousins lol. They have about half the countries their DNA says they’re from in common too.
Grey-green eyes here, and dark ash blond hair. But my ancestors were from the regions of Bohemia and Bavaria.
Your Scottish accent is very pleasant to hear and easy to understand :) Alba... Caledonia... my favourite country in the whole world!
Due to my job at a medical teaching college, I developed a lot of deep research skills with access to a lot of medical journals. Due to my original goal of Computer Science, I had developed a lot of skills for logical processing and logical research. Then, I started into cosmetic DNA (for personal reasons). Over time, things began to appear.
DNA functions not like binary, but vacuum tubes. Things are not dominant/recessive, but additive. This causes "dominants" to appear to overwhelm "recessives".
As you have noted (and I started presenting to my colleagues back in 2000), all colors are a function of brown + red (which appears yellow due to the low density) on what appears to be blue (due to the light scattering effect). Blue is (of course) the result of negligible red or brown. Grey is just blue with very low amounts of red (higher values cause the extremely rare purple/violet). Eyes are controlled by six dominant sets (red, brown, saturation) for outer and closer to the pupil. These same sets can be shared amongst of cosmetics like hair and skin. While a base value is set at birth, epigenetics reflect lived experience and can be passed on to future generations.
As long thought, brown increases as one approaches the Equator. As such, the correlation is positive. Of course, it takes generations for this value to change, thus causing variability due to migration. If a populace remains for a couple of centuries, their base DNA will conform to the new latitude.
But what of the red/yellow that produces Asian skin tones and/or green eyes? Cloudiness. This is directly correlated to the cloudiness of the region. Thus, places like Ireland show a higher rate of red hair/green eyes because of the latitude (low brown) and high cloudiness. This also explains why red haired/green eyed descendants of people displaced to lower latitudes also experience higher fat content as fat is the quickest way for the body to gain sun protection.
As these changes occur over a long time, individuals will begin to share base DNA matching individuals of similar latitude and cloudiness. When people primarily stay indoors, the body treats it as cloudy. This tendency toward the mobility of populations and indoor life is part of the recent obesity epidemic, people need to get out more.
My grandfather had black hair and green eyes he was Irish. I have green eyes, now that I'm aging my hair is turning dark brown.
Hi there! My Grandmother also had very dark hair as an elder! From Cork!
My hair changed color growing up too. I've been blonde, dark brown to red. I could always find 3 colors in my natural hair
My father is Irish descent. He has green eyes and he is also colorblind my twin brother and I have hazel eyes. We are not colorblind and when we are younger when we’re hunting for small game in the trees or the woods, my dad could see the game in the forest before my brother or I, my dad always said, because he was colorblind, he could see the Different shades of brown and green, and the movement of the animals would stick out
By far the rarest eye color, glad I have them.

Hi! I'm an American woman of largely U.K. ancestry (Irish, English, Welsh in order of majority) and Germanic ancestry from what was formerly Western Pomerania, and is now Poland.
My natural hair color was brown/black, and my eyes are a rather deep green. My mother (no germanic blood) had the dark hair and green eyes. Dad (lots of German blood) had pale blue/grey eyes with sandy hair in his youth which turned dark as he got older - and then fell out. I also inherited my porcelain skin from Mom, along with genes for serious premature graying.
So, yeah . . . looks like the video's info holds true.

If its dark lighting, they can be confused for being brown.
I was golden blonde and bright green eyes. Two daughters have green eyes; my so has the even rarer combo of ginger hair and blue eyes and my other daughter green hazel eyes that go very green or cinnamon depending on what colour he wears. When she is angry her eyes get very dark.

Hazel Eyed here. But my Mom and her grandfather had gray eyes (Normandy France). His eyes looked strange in photos, like he had no color in his eyes.
Green eyed gal here. This was recommended so I clicked. My dad had green & my mom had blue. My husband has hazel (his mom had blue) our kids are 1 blue, 1 green.
I have hazel- green eyes. 70% hazel and 30% green, depends on the light how it comes out.
South Germany, male.
I have brown eyes, I've seen some absolutely beautiful green eyes, very captivating.
I have dark green eyes. My mother (Celtic) had blue eyes. My father (Northen Italian) had light green eyes.
I have green eyes and so do two of my daughters. My Irish father had green eyes and my Scottish mother had blue eyes. My name has always been Pixie as my father said I was from the Fae.
I notice the long held syllable at the end of your words (particularly those ending in a or er), which I think developed in London, has now spread to Scotland it seems. That is together with a downward inflection of the voice at the end of sentences, unlike the upward inflection often found in America, as though a statement was really a question. Very interesting. I also notice that Scots sometimes pronounce the word Western as Westeren. Similarly with Eastern etc and I think that comes from Gaelic origins. In Irish a vowel sound is often pronounced between consonants appearing together ( The name Sorcha for instance is pronounced Soreka in Ireland)
Green here, but sometimes people say hazelish depending on my mood. I got them from my mothers French (Breton) side.
Wonder which moods turn your eyes hazel?
I have moss green colored eyes and strawberry blonde hair. I am from the US, and have Scottish, Irish, English, German and Norwegian heritage.
My eyes are grey, but they were bright blue until I was about 26. I've always wondered why my eyes changed colour at that age and why my wife is convinced that my eyes darken when I'm angry or frustrated.
Amber and green eyes are the most appealing colours to me.
I have forest green eyes that can change to a more fiery hazel hue depending on what I'm wearing or the season of year.
Being Welsh, Scottish and Creole, they stand out even more with my olive complexion and freckles.
Great color combination. 👍
I LOVE GREEN EYES, THEY REMIND ME OF EARTH MOTHER💗🌎💗🌲💗
I am from Bulgaria with green eyes. My mum is with blue eyes, and my dad is with green eyes.
I have green eyes, too!
Pretty awesome that there's something special about me! 😊
Light green eyes checking in. Green is rare and then this shade is rarer so I've seen just a handful of people with this color. One was my mother. Two of the other people I've met with this color were people with mixed Caucasian and some African ancestry. It's an instant connection when you have a rare color and you meet someone else with the same color. I feel similarly when I see blue or hazel eyes, it's an instant connection.
Rarity depends where you are. Green is more common than brown in the UK.
Dark Green eyes, medium brown hair. Mostly Scottish and Welsh heritage.
I bet your pretty (that sounds creepy, I assure you it wasn't meant to be) My wife is Welsh/ Irish and has the same features. Shes very pretty, still after 35 years of putting up with me....
My mother had the most beautiful green eyes. My eyes are hazel, but they can change with mood and turn more green at times. I didn’t know green eyes were so rare.
Mine is green/hazel, when I was young 80-90% green and as I got older it phased to more hazel, but a majority still green with gold pixels or sparkles. I remember my dad's eyes as 1 of them was green, the other one blue😊
And eye colours can alter somewhat depending of the ambient lighting so how can that be a strong selection factor.
He did mention lighting effecting the colour appearance.
My eyes are generally hazel but turn very green in summer and darker, almost light brown in winter.
I have green eyes, which is from my English, Irish and a tiny bit of Scottish DNA. I wish I had the red hair too, but I missed out on that and have light ash brown hair. I LOVE my green eyes! 🇦🇺
