In a nutshell - focus on the improvement you need to achieve, not the problem you need to overcome, and celebrate every improvement you achieve. It's about adopting a positive mindset and motivating yourself. Gotta love it :-)
Jake, you always are very clear in yours explanations, but in this video you have got a degree above. This one is really an archer's pscological treatment. Thank you! God Bless you!
I totally agree with this advice. I can see the improvement in my form over the course of just 1 session. If I choke, I simply tell myself what to do right on the next shot and move forward. It seems to work.
This makes perfect sense to me... pretty much inline with most of what I have read on the subject. Humans perform better with positive reinforcement. This is why in most sports one of the most successful strategies to victory is compromising the mental game of your opponent, 'getting in their head.' This applies to everything from chess to boxing. I really like the reference to the 3 circles (pillars) of the mental game because it really explains WHY the mental is so important and how it can affect performance. You get down on yourself you are cracking the pillar of your self image... you get mad or frustrated it limits focus and interferes with your conscious brain... etc. Great vid... thanks for the explanation!
Man, Jake, please - put a poster over it , a target or just colour it in, but PLEASE - do something about that white spot over you left shoulder ! I've scratched a hole in my screen wiping it away ! great video fella, cheers !
I need to try this. As a newbie, I get more and more frustrated the more I try. My 'bad' language intensifies when I try to implement new techniques into my form and it goes pear shaped! This type of positive mind control has helped me in the past with dealing with anxiety so I totally get where you're coming from. Thanks Jake 👍
I like this mental archery tip for success. I believe this technique is very helpful! Thanks. I am returning to archery after a year and have just moved from Florida to Arizona. I appreciate your fine videos!
Excellent advice. When I describe the shot cycle to classes I always included this as the last step... after the follow through, evaluate the shot and what you have to do to adjust... It does require the archers to have a good solid understanding of proper technique before it will fully work but starting early on is a good idea.
Going to need to try this. Can get really down on myself when I execute a poor shot. A couple of poor ends can escalate to shooting really poorly for the rest of the day.
Reminds me of a poem from a chinese philosopher When an archer is shooting for fun He has all his skill. If he shoots for a brass buckle He is already nervous. If he shoots for a prize of gold He goes blind Or sees two targets - He is out of his mind. His skill has not changed, But the prize divides him. He cares He thinks more of winning Than of shooting - And the need to win Drains him of power. ~Chuang Tzu
Great video. I'm new to archery. It's been on my wish list for 50 years. I've also been studying Hypnosis and Neural Linguistic Programing. You are using the same language and explaining the same concepts. I'll be looking for the book you mentioned.
Great Video and helpfull thoughts (Sorry when i misspell something, english is not my natural language) ... started archery with a trainer and yes ... concentrate more on what you have to do to avoid the mistake from the shoot before and not directly the mistake ... funny (positiv) thing ... when i realise i start to mess up my "release" (ORecurve) i summ/hear in my head, while "targeting", the refrain of "Let it goooo, leeet it goooo" :D :D ... works for my better than focusing on "NO pluge, or whatever it is called" :D
This is a key component of a strong, resilient, mental game. Lanny Bassham, in With Winning In Mind, makes the same case for having a positive approach to self-evaluation.
Hello from the land of the long white cloud! Any tips you might have for mounted archery?? Just found your channel and love how informative they are thus far, but just thought I'd ask you or any other viewers if you/they have any handy tips specific to archery on horses. Cheers!
Keeping positive affirmation toward improvement is spot on! interesting if you saw dont pluck u put that in your subconsious. On another subject could you create a short segment of shooting without the clicker and what your transition is from using a clicker to going without a clicker. What is your trigger for the shot to make it consistent without a clicker.
A book I read pointed out "your brain never processes the word 'don't'." So "don't hit the ball into the sand trap" becomes "hit the ball into the sand trap." So instead of "don't hit the red or blue", change it to "I'm going to hit yellow", and your previous shots be damned.
I get what you are saying but the flip side is something called “toxic positivity” and I find that as debilitating (in all things) as negativity. The trick seems to be is striking that balance. That is hard.

Mental game! And works miracles outside of archery as well.
Mental game is fundamental.
exactly this! Positive reinforcement is less work (more productive) than negative reinforcement

This kind of positive psychological pattern actually helps not only in archery, very good point

Alternatively, would it work to shift your focus to the parts of the wall that are not white?
Amen!!! I attempt to fix my mistake on the next shot!!
Mindful Repetition of Success

Thanks for this analysis process.

This is awesome Jake! Thanks for the video

Kim Wujin looks like he just took a break from drinking cocktails on the beach to shoot a few arrows. This might be archer's paradox #2.
I’ve always referred this to ”positive” or ”negative” enhancement (of your shot or your form). Good video on an important topic 👍
Excellent advice for archery, and for life in general.
Thank you Jake - EXACTLY the tips i need:)
Brilliant as always, and transferable to other areas of your life.
I really liked your explanation of how to draw the small circle bigger. Thanks much.

Great video. Did I learn this before? Yes. Did I need to be reminded of it in a new way today, from somebody new? You bet. Another great video, Jake.
such great advice, for all sorts of things.
Great advise, thanks!
Great hack!! And nothing to buy. Thanks for this Jake!! I need to work on this!
Awesome advice!
Thank you for this, and all your videos. You’ve got talent in explaining the sport, as well as in it.
How about a video on a day in the Olympics Training Center.
Not a bad idea...
@@JakeKaminskiArchery yes please. Even maybe a week.
Please do this, I want to train there when I’m of age to live alone.
That would be amazing!!

very effective mental game on how to gid gud
Hmm, I’ll shoot half a dozen arrows at a target, and only look at and think about the single one that was a flyer! Damn
Is that a bug-a-salt there on your bench?

An honest archer makes a good archer... humility and honesty will keep you level headed IMHO regardless of the mental program.
