THE ULTIMATE FILAMENT STORAGE SOLUTION

  • Every owner of a 3D-Printer needs to store his filament spools. There are so many concepts of filament storage solution out there. But no one of them fits my needs. So I had to find my own solution. After thinking about it a few days, I found the perfect solution. At least for me. I made a design that uses most of the space of my cabinet and I have access to every spool without moving or restacking the other spools. With my solution a can store up to 28, 1Kg Filament spools. For me the ultimate storage solution.

Great idea! Once I increase my collection of spools, I'll have to consider building something similar.

Great solution and build! The use of wall anchors as nutters is both brilliant and blindingly obvious ONCE it is pointed out. Well done!

Loved the design!! Made me have an idea to address the spill distribution.. just motorize it, using a used 12v power window motor, pulley and a button... maybe even a Arduino and some programming to have some presets and 4 buttons, one for each row (this last part I have no idea how but there must be a tutorial around)

I'm jealous. I wish I had a CNC mill, and I especially wish we could get such nice plywood here. My filament storage solution consists of large, cylindrical food containers with Tupperware(tm) style lids, so they are airtight. I can stack four spools inside them, and I put a dehumidifying pouch (they sell these at Tesco, they're meant for keeping the mildew out of your clothing) on top of the top spool. I also put a mini-hygrometer on top of the filaments. The containers stack on top of each other. It isn't really that convenient, often you want a spool that's at the bottom of a container. Then again, it didn't cost much, and took little effort. Interesting how the mill has the equivalent of a BL-Touch.

    Beautiful! So many questions:
    1. Did you build the original cabinet or was it purchased and if so what is it?
    2. What material did you use for the turn style?
    3. Do the doors seal water-tight to prevent moisture accumulation in the spools? I'm assuming not but could be an easy modification.
    4. What CNC mill are you using?

A great idea but I think it was overkill on the screws to hold it in place inside the cabinet. As it was such a tight fit one screw in each of the upper back corners where they almost never would’ve been seen would have been more than sufficient to hold it in place I think, but if you had doubts one more in each of the two lower front corners making a total of four screws, two up back, two down front, which would have probably been overkill.

couldnt you have formed the carriages with a cup shape and had a single rod going through the spools so that the spools could rotate, and then have a passthrough system so you wouldnt have to remove the spools at all.

Consider adding dehumidification to the cabinet. Can take inspiration from this:
    th-cam.com/video/p34DapG9598/w-d-xo.html
Would be fairly simple to make the cabinet doors seal shut with a latch or something and some gasket material to keep moisture out.
