Sinistar would get the anxiety and adrenaline going when he's chasing you as a kid. Williams knew how to do SFX in the arcade.

Sinistar was designed in part by Robert J. Mical, one of the people on the original Amiga computer development team before Commodore sadly purchased their company.
I met him at an Amiga show around 1986 in NYC.

I don't have Sinistar. But back in the 80's you always knew when an arcade had one because of the machine yelling in attract mode. In fact at one point I was lookong for recordings of arcade background noise to play in my little basement arcade for ambiance. And the biggest thing I wanted was Sinistar yelling in the background as part of the sounds.

I dug around on TH-cam and found recordings of arcades. Most of which are just the sounds of the machines running. I just wanted some background noise that made me feel like I was in an arcade from my childhood. And Sinistar was one of the attracts I always remember from back then.

Todd is amazing. I was lucky to meet him at my first (and his as well!) Houston Arcade Expo in 2022 and he was just as charamastic, funny, corny, and wonderful in person as he is in his videos. People treated him like the Arcade King that he is. Hope he makes is to the 2023 one!

I remember how awesome for the first time walking into a arcade in the mall in 1982 it was called two bit operation and you could hear the arcade from a distance and knew what arcades they had by the sounds before you got there, 80s music playing in the background almost pitch black all you could see was the glowing arcade monitors and glowing space carpet and images on the walls above. Tron had a glow to it that was just awesome to look at and the people made it way to crowded as you couldn't even play a game that you wanted as to many lined up for the next play. Incredible experience living through the 80s and there will never be anything like it again.

shout-out to TNT I love watching his stuff! +1, haha! sadly never got to see it in the arcade in any capacity (especially not that sweet sounding cockpit version) but when they launched the 'arcade's greatest hits' line on 16/32-bit consoles I did play a fair bit of it on that collection! nothing more tense than seeing him on your tail and hoping you have enough cini- ... er rather sinibombs to be able to take him out!

The "lion" backstory on the scream sound effect is doubtful. That sound effect originally featured in American Tourister's "Gorilla vs. Luggage" TV ad from 1980. It plays at about the midway point of the advertisement.

@@RetroRalph Sinistar is one I never encountered in the wild, so I don’t think I’ve played it. With the 49-way stick, it’s one that takes more effort to emulate on a cab, so keeping the real stuff alive is great. It wouldn’t feel authentic trying with an 8-way…. Keep it up!

I did grow up with it and the feeling of hearing it first, then seeing it! I have to admit I was pretty shy about playing it at first until i watched a couple of other people play it. The speech sounds coming out of the arcades around that time were amazing. Combine this with berzerk's sounds was definitely attracting. The cockpit at that age? Forget it lol. It was like Event Horizon to a kid that young back in the 80's. Super awesome game. It's one of .y top shelf games I still play to this day. Im glad someone like you were able to acquire the cockpit version. I know you will treat it well. Definitely a diamond I the rough! I had a William's collection where one of the code programmers (cant remember his name) was talking about how the kids found out about an infinite lives cheat! Thanks for the great videos Ralph. I ran into one of these cockpit cabinets, can’t remember where. They had the lights turned off in this hardwood-floored side room with the volume cranked to 11 and it was so loud it shook. It was so badass. One of my all-time favorite arcade memories.

It's great that you not only own the cockpit (AND cabinet), but you enjoy the game as well! It makes it that much more special. I love the look of the Sinistar cockpit... actually for many cockpit games the look and play take it to a whole different level than the standard cabinet version. For example, Atari Star Wars also came out in 1983 with the stand up and the cockpit. Only about 2,400 were made... more than the 200 Sinistar, but still numbers like that make the old cockpits hard to find. But being "inside" the game with a more enclosed sound system makes it feel more immersive and to me more enjoyable! I ended up building my own Star Wars Arcade cockpit from scratch thanks to build plans and templates out there. Still quite a feat and was a 2 month project to build. Everything outside and most of the inside is built to original specs, but I took liberty on the control panel and screen because finding the original components to put inside the game, including working boards (or even worse, an Amplifone vector monitor), is very hard and can be expensive! So, I had to put in a pc and make it emulated with the GRS Flight Yoke. I'm enjoying it very much... and unlike the original 1983 version, I get to play other arcade games inside a cockpit that should have had a version made for them. So it's not an original, but it's a +1 to the number of Star Wars cockpits remaining in the world to me!

This along with Defender/Stargate are my favorite games. Nothing I've ever played is more unrelentingly chaotic than those 3. They hit the gas and never let off.
Very envious of your cockpit! Was lucky enough to have a local arcade with one that I set a record of 276,000 on some years ago. Since then, it broke down and it's been a struggle not having a game to play. I've tried emulation with an analog arcade stick, but nothing feels like that original 49-way joystick. I reached a point where I memorized all 24 directional positions and was able to effortlessly flick to take out anything tailing me. Incredible game that I wish were more common.

Game Terminal also has the cockpit Sinistar. Don't know how often it works though...
Many years ago, there was a youtube video of someone who modded a robot vacuum cleaner into the shape of Sinistar. It would periodically yell it's trademark speeches as it slowly cleaned up carpet... though the noise of the vacuum cleaner would often drown out the intimidating roar.

i had this combo back in 2009, i got a standup, then found a cockpit not even 3 months later. paid 400 for the standup and 900 for the cockpit. artwork and condition on cockpit was very good, however seat was cracked (fixed it with fiberglass repair kit and spray foam to fill the seat, and the control panel was cracked on bottom right corner, and bolts were missing from it. If you ever see a sinistar cockpit with bigger than normal bolt heads on the control panel that's the one i had. but i'd say the absolute coolest looking cockpit out of them all. one thing i did not like was the game was not comfortable to play in the cockpit that 49 way joystick, had some good resistance and the angle it was at would hurt your wrist after a bit. still worth owning but it was mad uncomfortable. so if your a collector i'd say that's the best reason to have them both, the standup looks great as well, but its the one that is super comfy to play, the cockpit keep just for the looks. nice find.

I played it at a movie theater arcade in the 80s, always loved it. Then played it on PlayStation Williams classics. It’s so much harder playing without a 48way joystick, it’s like playing defender without the correct controls, kind of frustrating for a very difficult game to start with!

The first video I saw of Todd Tuckey was when I was researching something about SEGA Mega-Tech / Mega-Play hardware and I ended up watching more of his videos and also ended up getting to know your channel through a video you did about OutRun 2 Chihiro Hardware.

Looking at this, I kinda wonder if MAME can do motion control...I could imagine the 'ultimate' MAME setup, with a cabinet based on the deluxe cockpits for Afterburner/G-Loc (or if you're really ambitious/insane, the R-360 cab), then using it for the flight sims, racing games, regular games, etc.

I play Sinistar in one of my 4 MAME cabinets. This game plays in my vertical MAME cab. I built it in a MsPacman cabinet (wood grain side art, no cabinet art) with a 19" CRT arcade monitor. I'm able to change my control panels for almost every possible combination you can imagine. Sinistar plays using my analog joystick. I use the Ultimarc Ultimate 360 red ball top joystick. Works great for this game, and feels pretty good. I like to use the original controls when possible, but the original joysticks used in this game are hard to obtain. Sinistar plays & feels pretty good with the Ultimarc joystick, and even old versions of MAME were very capable of replicating the game PCB.

+1 Yeah I really never understood how to play the game either. lol But I always appreciated how it was constructed and designed. And props for owning both versions of Sinistar man! And what is with TH-cam and their like button? I hit the like and it hits the dislike. smh

How much is the average sinistar cockpit going for these days out of curiosity?

    • @RetroRalph

$3500-$4000+ would be the going rate, I've seen them sell for as high as $5000! Crazy thing is I bet back in the day you could have got one for $500.

The Sinistar cockpit is scarce but it's not as rare as the Blaster cockpit (only three made). According to Eugene Jarvis the disposition of them are:
    1. Converted into a prototype game (Devastator)
    2. One is at his dad's house
    3. ???????
