@@sebchambers7140 I could easily see this fitting into that final wave. Like, a wave of classical monsters. The Cyberbiters and Malwarewolves as underlings or something.
This video reminded me that Harley Quinn’s first LEGO appearance came with the torso backwards. The chequered pattern is flipped so that it doesn’t tile properly with her hat, arms and legs. She also has a printed bust akin to other female minifigs from that era… which is on her back. I noticed this immediately when I was a kid and switched the arms around the first time I built the set as a ten year old boy. Considering that this is how she appears in promotional images it doesn’t seem like an accident, but then in that case why add that detail in the first place? Did LEGO decide that she was too sexualized too late to change the torso printing or something?
11:15 "You'll never see a _Star Wars_ line like _The LEGO Batman Movie,_ with so many original or remixed concepts, because _Star Wars_ would get mad if [The LEGO Group] gave it that treatment, that these [are] distractions from their favorite designs that already exist." Ive been watching your lego rewind videos for about 3 to 4 years and gotta say the best part of these are how passionate you talk about these themes even after all these years. Thanks for doing these. One of my only reasons to comeback to youtube always🙏
Ikr? I never expected a Lego Batman episode to happen from the way he talked about it years ago, and yet even this one was filled with love for the line and the amazing level of care and research I've come to love from this series :D
I think the reason behind such a divide in design freedom for Star Wars and Batman is that Star Wars has a singular canon to adhere to outside of non-canon parodies/what ifs and stylistic choices between different mediums like cartoons and live-action, while Batman (and DC, and other superhero lines in general) operates on multiple canons where each interpretation is valid so long as some core principles are maintained. It probably helps too that at the time Warner and LEGO were partnered for their films and games; gonna be difficult to pull the same thing with any Marvel character with Disney's iron grip on their properties. As for the action figure design, I can't say for everyone else, but when I say I'd like to see BIONICLE come back like this, it's less about the design itself but the idea behind it: a figure that relies less on specialized pieces and drastically-divergent building systems and focuses on using what LEGO currently has for a satisfactory and customizable build, kinda like the brick-built dinosaurs, dragons and animals you prefer over the pre-molded figures. Obviously the transition to BIONICLE needs some design changes to fit better (maybe a heavier use of Technic too?).
That weird Robin from the Deathstroke set is actually Dick Grayson! Just in his New 52 design, they started doing different iteration of the Robin suits as the like progressed, I guess not to repeat the same figure over and over again like they were doing with that New 52 Batman. The eventually did other obscure Robin costumes like the New 52 Jason Todd Robin, starring in a Junior's set with... The Joker... Uh, pretty dark.
Regarding the Star Wars comment, I think the 2020-style clone troopers were the scenario in which Lego designers were allowed to make their own spin on Star Wars, combining both movie and animated into their own design. It’s not much, but it resulted in a very clean design optimal for graphic design on a small minifigure. Great video as always 👌
Lego actually did try to do their own thing with Star Wars a little bit (not nearly the same scale though). They made sets featuring some of their own original characters like Jek 14, a stormtrooper who has force powers. From what I’ve seen, Star Wars fans have the opinions you said in the video on the matter. Jek 14 himself i think is kind of a funny minifigure because he has a modified version of the face on every clone trooper from 2013. As for the lego batman movie itself, it’s crazy how many sets they released for the lego batman movie. So so SO many sets each with their own unique minifigures and highly detailed builds. More than any other lego movie (though the polybags and promos might be apart of that). They cannibalized eachother in the market. 60% of the sets went on clearance. It’s clear afterwards Warner brothers or lego got cold feet since we saw significantly less sets since. It was going to happen eventually. Hopefully when/if dc is fully sunsetted, we could see more lines like hidden side or dreamzzZ hit the stage.
ik a lot of star wars fans wouldn't like it, but a remixed/new lego take like you mentioned for a star wars line would be so SO cool!! 💖 id love to see how lego would go all out for it ~ and btww MERRY CHRISTMAS NICK!! 💕💞💕
seeing just how expansive the Lego Batman line was REALLY makes me wish Lego went all out on Into the Spiderverse. Idk if that was a Sony thing or a Lego thing, but I feel like that is some MAJOR missed potential!
My bet is that Disney has enough of a stronghold on LEGO to make sure that the only Spider-Man sets they can put out are ones themed around the comics or media they’ve got a hand in. Spider-Verse, being a production Disney has no hand in, is all but confirmed to be verboten unless the characters are slipped in comic-based Spider-Man sets. A shame, really; there’s a lot in both movies so far that’d be golden in LEGO form.
I’ve built the Batmobile at 1:53, got it for free from a friend; building it is like building a house. Layer after layer of bricks on top of a car shaped layer of baseplates. It was straightforward but actually kind of difficult as the old instructions don’t hold up well, black bricks over black bricks with no outline on glossy paper made things way more difficult than they needed to be. It was like a spot the difference at parts.
The LEGO Batman Movie's joker is the best design yet. In fact, this movie added so much to the Batman lore. The LEGO Batman became one of the best batman ever. And those sets are so inspired... I love the penguin's elegant car, the Ultimate Batmobile is a dream come true, and that scuttler is so awesome it's still in my wishlist. Its very interesting to think it could have been a recycled chima idea, and so surprisi g this wold Ninjago mech is actually a recycled nexo knight idea. We always learn so much with LEGO Rewind.
I think the year 2 blue suit was inspired by the Dark Knight Returns, which is why Batman wears that suit in the Battank set since he had a tank in that comic.
I smile any time Dino Attack is brought up. I loved how crazy and apocalyptic it was as a kid lol. I even ordered the green rex for Christmas this year.
So glad you finally covered the Bats, Lego Batman was my favorite theme for a long time, and this video kinda felt like a trip through memory lane for me! really hope we see some more Batman sets like TLBM ones in the future, those were so creative.
Great rewind, I know you don't enjoy normally covering licenses themes but I still think you can give new takes on things i would have never thought of looking at set.
Funny how pretty much all the lego "movie" sets were standouts for their designs. They kindq feel like masterwork AFOL mocs, but with play features to boot. It's like the designers were told "these are premium sets, so forget piece count - show off what lego can do".
You really did show how _The LEGO Batman Movie_ really did push the limit as to what LEGO can do when they put their own spin on licensed themes! Even if I haven't bought any LEGO Sets in a long time (mostly moving on to building things in BrickLink Studio), I'd say that _Sonic the Hedgehog_ is now my favorite licensed theme and I'd say has the potential to be great! The _Sonic_ series does have a lot of stuff that I would love to see in LEGO form like the innumerable amount of boss vehicles, along with more fan favorite characters getting Minifigures like Metal Sonic, Blaze, and Big the Cat. That said, I sure hope The LEGO Group doesn't stop experimenting with the franchise and puts their own spin on it like how they did with _The LEGO Batman Movie._ Sure, the fans are complaining about stuff like Knuckles piloting a mech, but I don't mind it. If anything, I remember watching My Brick Opinions' video on the demise of the McFarlane Toys' _Five Nights at Freddy's_ construction sets, and how McFarlane Toys limiting their scope to what's canon to the games really hurt them. (If anything, I think they should have made a board game to go along with the sets like _Orient Expedition_ or _LEGO Super Mario;_ no matter what sets people buy, they will always compliment each other.) (Also, the Speed Sphere honestly looks like a pretty great gimmick! I just hope The LEGO Group can design more freestyle sets for kids to build obstacles for the Speed Sphere, along with printing more variants for the Speed Sphere to represent other characters and the Elemental Barriers.)
Wow, I didn’t think you’d ever cover Batman. While it’s not my favorite theme ever, there were a few sets I had a fun time with growing up, like the Funhouse Escape, Harvest of Fear set with Killer Moth & Blue Beetle, & the few Killer Croc sets. This year for Lego rewind should be interesting though, can’t wait to see that video!
6:35 I remember my grandparents getting me Killer Croc’s tail-gator for my 12th birthday. It was really the only LEGO Batman movie set I got, but I don’t think I could’ve asked for a better set from the theme! That Killer Croc is my favorite design for the character, period! Also, “Bane’s henchman”at 7:24 isn’t just any ordinary mutant, but THE Mutant Leader from Dark Knight Returns! I hadn’t read the comic until only a few years ago, so it was pretty nice revisiting the LEGO Batman Movie and seeing an homage to the character (The Joker’s design from DKR was also homaged in the 2020 DC CMF), especially considering how mature the source material is considered for LEGO to approach.
I agree with you about the dearth of originality in newer LEGO Batman sets, so if we’re not gonna get any new content, can we at least get some deep cuts and long-demanded picks like Beyond?
Honestly, I think Lego batman has had a similar situation as Lego spider man. Starting out pretty simple and charming with just spider man in the 2000's. taking a bit of a break for a couple years. And eventually opening up to all of Marvel in general in 2012. Though unlike Marvel, DC Lego has been going through a bit of a rough patch recently, getting very few sets and they're usually only batman which is really strange.
I mean it makes sense from a business standpoint to focus primarily on Batman, as he's undoubtedly the biggest moneymaker for DC's brand and his vast amount of gadgets and vehicles can be easily adapted into sets. But I think the other major reason is because the DC brand as a whole has been in a rough patch in regards to movies, which are the primary factor driving Marvel's popularity and thus the demand for merchandise from toy companies like Lego. For all the troubles that the MCU has had the past few years, it pales in comparison to the DCEU, to the point that universe is over with and now James Gunn is heading the reboot universe. But in the meantime, Batman is the safe bet to always generate profit, especially by adapting the Burton and Nolan movies to get those extra nostalgia dollars. I really hope Gunn's DCU movies do well both as a fan of these characters that wants them done justice on the big screen, and as a fan of toys like Lego that wants to see these movies get represented in System form. I wanna see Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, etc. be popular mainstays in Lego's catalog of sets like Batman and Mavel as a whole is. I eventually want a Lego Justice League Watch Tower like the Avengers Tower, and the Daily Planet/Wayne Tower sets like the Daily Bugle set.
I appreciate you mentioning that the current buildable figure style doesn't fit with Bionicle, someone really had to say it, I'm happy youre against the flow with me on this one!
Awesome video! This is my favourite theme. Been collecting it since I was super young when they originally came out until today. I own 95% of the sets released. The Lego Batman Movie sets were really some of the best from Lego. Incredible minifigs some great builds and they really popped when looking at them on the shelf. It hasn’t been too pretty the last couple years although the most recent wave was pretty good despite its overprice, I’m glad the theme is still going. Merry Christmas everyone, here to hopefully many more Lego Batman sets! 🎉
I like the style of the early Batman sets, they have a look that I Enjoy Also my bionicle collection has gotten a lot larger, tahnok, mata Gali, inika hewkii, and kuhrak, my dad also got me a G2 store display which is cool
The announcement of a LEGO Batman line was so hype back at the time, I especially really wanted the set with Two Face and the Batmobile. Sadly I didn't have the money at the time 😔
The little penguins were a straight W first try, no need to revise the design down the line for as long as they were using brick built ones. Standard penguin moulds was definitely a miss
Speaking of how this could never happen with Star Wars, I remember LEGO making some cool stuff way back in the early 00's, like the TIE crawler, a TIE-fighter on tank treads. Feels like we got the bad alternative universe on that one.
The TIE Crawler actually existed in the old Expanded Universe/Legends canon so it wasn't something Lego came up with originally. I think a more accurate representation of some more original takes on Star Wars from Lego would probably be the Yoda Chronicles and Freemaker Adventures, both being short animated series with actual tie-in sets.
Pleasantly surprised to see that you avoided the usage of any r/BatmanArkham joke in here, so props for another professionally made LEGO Rewind episode, thank you.
Great video as always and one that is especially relevant for me during this holiday season. I remember absolutely loving the 2006 Batman I theme when I was younger and I still think it's one of the best themes, but I barely had any of them because even by Christmas of 2008, they were discontinued and very expensive on the after-market. Your quote that they focused "more on striking, memorable shapes" is a perfect summation; especially for the Batwing, and the layout of the Batcave still appears like the 2006 Lego set in my mind. I would say that almost all of the figures were hits out of the park, especially given the time, though a few such as Posion Ivy definitely improved over time. The Mr. Freeze figure in particular is a favorite because while it does take some inspiration from BTAS, it is really its own design. And speaking of, The Lego Batman Movie had really amazing designs, to the point where I got the art book. It really is its own legitimate interpretation beyond just being the comedic Lego version.
Nick do you think you’ll ever do a part three of Monkie kid mega review. As a big fan of Monkie kid I would love to see a part three. But I think you confirmed you won’t be doing a part three.
Thanks for answering my question, but sad to hear that. Just got team secret hq though the technic part of the build scares me. (Also have you seen 2024 Monkie kid? Also do you like dreamzzz)
I loved the video, probably one of my fav lego rewinds now! Though if I had to nitpick with one thing it’s that the small wings that you said were made for this theme actually were made before it, they actually appeared in Lego Vikings as the fins on the tail of the armored dragon vs double catapult set, just in different colors of course.
Where does he get all those wonderful toys.... (Also I'm glad I'm not the only one who's favorite interpretation of Batman's world and characters is the LEGO Batman Movie as well...)
Great rewind! Wish I was able to get some more of the 2006-2008 Batman sets. Only own three-four figures from the time, just that the sets are so damn expensive and hard to snag for a great deal.
Batman is my favourite superhero i grew up playing lego batman games the 1989 ucs batmobile is my tied for favourite lego set with the galaxy exsplorer remake so its really ashame to me that they arnt making much batman sets right now i hope we get more of legos version of batman not just movie tie ins which i still love
One part of this didn’t age well. The comment on Star Wars not doing this. We got rebuild the galaxy coming this year with some pretty crazy remix sets
Amazing video, as usual! As a hardcore Batman fan, one thing that always annoyed me about the theme was that after 2017 we saw fewer and fewer of Batman's rogues' gallery be represented in the sets. I guess they went all out for the LEGO Batman Movie because from 2018 onward many of Batman's classic rogues would never see representation in a set again, the only exception being 2019, which is why that's one of my favorite waves to this day. Since then it has only ever been the Joker and Harley Quinn.
The weirdest detail of the 2012 Superheroes line was them changing Batman's cowls mid-way through the first year. Like, all of the promo images, early sets, and the Lego Batman 2 video game had them using the 2006 cowl, but then they just dropped the new cowl into set boxes. Like, my brother got the Batwing set with the new cowl for his birthday in July, but the Batmobile he got for Christmas had the old cowl. Very weird. It also made that Electro Suit Batman minifig that came with the Lego Batman encyclopedia inaccurate to the game, so that was annoying. Just glad I got my Superman minifigure from that year, though. I'd wanted one of those since the 2006 theme.
You missed the McDonald’s Lego Batman toys that were not Lego compatible at all and were made to promote the first lego Batman video game! Just kidding, great video as always!
In preparation for a potential LEGO Rewind 2023 Special that might cover topics like _Ninjago: Dragons Rising,_ _DREAMZzz,_ _Sonic the Hedgehog,_ and _LEGO Fortnite,_ here is an addendum to my previous comment regarding licensed themes. The biggest problem when it comes to licensed products for not just LEGO, but other construction toy brands, is that often times, it usually ends up being a glorified advertisement for the license instead of being something unique that takes advantage of the art form of building blocks. Often times when a licensed theme ends up covering all of the recognizable things from a licensed franchise, where does it go from there? There has to be a system in place that incentivizes consumers to buy more of the sets, like how _LEGO Super Mario_ has the Starter Course sets be evergreen products, while the other sets are there to add value to each other. Otherwise, a lot of time, effort, and money is wasted upon trying to make a toyline out of that property. Other times, all that a franchise can get is just a one-off display piece that includes the main cast, as seen with franchises like _Stranger Things,_ _Horizon Forbidden West,_ and just about any of their sitcom sets. And the best guess I have as to why the do that is because those franchises cannot support a full-on toyline without ending up failing like _LEGO SpongeBob_ or _Overwatch,_ which leads me to my next point. Part of the reason why people make MOCs is that it allows them to represent something that The LEGO Group has yet to officially make. Sure, Ole Kirk Christiansen didn't want children to build military vehicles out of LEGO bricks, and I respect his wishes for that, but nobody should tell each other that they shouldn't build what they want. And I think it is a smart move of LEGO to limit franchises like _Stranger Things_ and _Horizon_ to just one-off LEGO sets with the main cast, as it sparks interest in making MOCs for those franchises. LEGO, and the genre of building block toys as a whole, should be the toy for creativity, and that they could be anything for anyone. These days, it feels like The LEGO Group's overreliance on licensed themes seems to be part of their push towards attracting an adult demographic. It is just difficult to sell original LEGO themes like _Bionicle_ or _Ninjago_ to that adult demographic, as they are more likely to be attracted to licensed themes that they recognize like _Star Wars_ and _Harry Potter_ instead of those "glorified distractions with their supplementary toy commercials." However, many licensed themes end up being glorified commercials for something else instead of feeling like a genuine toy for built for creativity. That is the deadliest sin of a licensed theme. And finally, I want to thank you for your work with LEGO Rewind. Like what you said in the _Bionicle_ episode, this show really does allow viewers experience what it was like growing up with these LEGO themes. It's just what we need.
I can never look at that OG batcave set without a deep voice saying “In the deep, dark layer of the Batman..” before Batman says something outrageous

I mean, she's wearing his logo!
Every year, my sister and I watch batman and robin in cristmas. It's just our thing
I appreciate you mentioning that the current buildable figure style doesn't fit with Bionicle, someone really had to say it, I'm happy youre against the flow with me on this one!
I remember the frist Lego Batman game we was alone and everything was aboned
Awesome video! This is my favourite theme. Been collecting it since I was super young when they originally came out until today. I own 95% of the sets released. The Lego Batman Movie sets were really some of the best from Lego. Incredible minifigs some great builds and they really popped when looking at them on the shelf. It hasn’t been too pretty the last couple years although the most recent wave was pretty good despite its overprice, I’m glad the theme is still going. Merry Christmas everyone, here to hopefully many more Lego Batman sets! 🎉
I like the style of the early Batman sets, they have a look that I
Enjoy
Also my bionicle collection has gotten a lot larger, tahnok, mata Gali, inika hewkii, and kuhrak, my dad also got me a G2 store display which is cool
The announcement of a LEGO Batman line was so hype back at the time, I especially really wanted the set with Two Face and the Batmobile. Sadly I didn't have the money at the time 😔
The little Lego penguins with guns are probably my favorite buildable minions of ALL TIME
Probably one of my favourite lego series when i was a kid. Probably the reason why i love DC more than Marvel.
The absolute best lego creator on youtube
I agree with you - I miss the days of the wild and exciting justice league and rogues gallery
Best Christmas gift
Batman I sets and the Videogame were killer ! Great caption !
Love The Games As A Kid
Im glad we got a surprise episode (at least to me). Love the rewind series!
Pleasantly surprised to see that you avoided the usage of any r/BatmanArkham joke in here, so props for another professionally made LEGO Rewind episode, thank you.
Are you stupid? He’s talking about _Bat_ man, not Man!
Why is there no full ham aslume set? Is lego stupid?
Also the original Mr Freeze was a cool use of the Insectoids helmet.
I thoroughly enjoyed this trip to planet ripple! Great video mate! Time to go back to earth! 😂
🚀 🌟 💫 ⭐️ 🌎
Ahh, made it just in time!
I just recently got into the channel and have been tearing through the vids, was confused seeing this and happy it's new! 🎄🎁
Merry Christmas guys
Thanks for the Christmas gift , we needed another Lego Rewind
Nick do you think you’ll ever do a part three of Monkie kid mega review. As a big fan of Monkie kid I would love to see a part three. But I think you confirmed you won’t be doing a part three.
I can't. I sold all my Monkie kid stuff save a couple sets from this year. I just couldn't find the time or energy to keep making videos like that.
Thanks for answering my question, but sad to hear that. Just got team secret hq though the technic part of the build scares me. (Also have you seen 2024 Monkie kid? Also do you like dreamzzz)
@@Bagel-rr1qbI’m a huge MK fan too. The theme doesn’t get enough recognition bruder
Kind of off topic, but as it hasnt been said yet, but I'd love to see a vid about more of your Chima mocs, that Skunk vehicle looks awesome!
I loved the video, probably one of my fav lego rewinds now! Though if I had to nitpick with one thing it’s that the small wings that you said were made for this theme actually were made before it, they actually appeared in Lego Vikings as the fins on the tail of the armored dragon vs double catapult set, just in different colors of course.
....Oh.
Shoot. Gonna have to correct myself in the 2023 recap.
A great gift for the holidays!
Happy Holidays Nick on Planet Ripple! :)
Thanks! Merry Christmas! You’re my favorite Lego TH-camr!
Absolutely love your videos brother ….. i watch lego rewind atleast once a year. Perfectly done. Happy holidays 👍
This is absolutely amazing keep up the great work can’t wait to see more 🔥!
I had all of the original 2006 Lego Batman sets, the only set I was missing was the huge collector edition Batmobile
One part of this didn’t age well. The comment on Star Wars not doing this. We got rebuild the galaxy coming this year with some pretty crazy remix sets
Oh, I'm happy about that. The very next wave after I said that, too.
@@NickonPlanetRipple love you videos btw
Im soooo upset i missed these sets. i swear i never seen these at all here in the UK....
Omg I love when you post these, thanks a bunch, hope you have a good holiday ❤
Happy late Christmas all
never change, penguin penguins. never change...
The perfect Christmas gift! Love the vid! Also absolutely adore your Chima customs, they rock!
im always happy when theres a new lego rewind video
Fantastic video as always!
Not this coming out when I'm trying to collect the 2012 batman sets
So yesterday, i randomly think “boy Nick on Planet Ripple hasn’t uploaded in a while”, and LO AND BEHOLD.
YES! I realy want them to make some Batman Beyond sets!
Merry Christmas Nick
Happy Bat-Holidays everyone!
Love your videos
Wow
A Christmas present
Thank you
Christmas has come early~ have a merry one Nick! Always dig your content and insight on lego design.
Watching this while building ninjago city markets!
So freaking excited
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Mr. Nick!
Where did you find the malwarewolf? I need to recreate it.
The creator made tweets about it.
@@NickonPlanetRipple do you have a link to the tweet?
It’s a Christmas miracle 😂
Fellas, I found him.
Since you did Lego Batman, maybe another Superhero thing like Lego Marvel
If someone pays for it
Great video, didn't think you'd be doing any licensed theme.
Okay nick, what was your favorite Batman......89?? Nolan?? Or Reeve's??
