I think the idea of having him cry out his brother was a bit creepy...but at the same time you could only access it by doing an extremely complex move. So I dunno, it almost felt like an Easter egg for what was to come.
I wonder if lego just made a couple rahi made with technic builds and maybe some classic looking masks. The charm of the original bionicle sets was always the functionality for me. I recently went and paid $400 to get the bohrok queens set that I had new when I was 6, and I forgot just how extreme the functions were on older bionicle sets.
These yearly rewinds are a treat. Glad you're still making these every now and again after the finale. Shame Vidiyo was doomed because it really does have fantastic minifigs (thanks for featuring my art at the Hagah section btw! couldn't agree more with the fact they really feel like a new Toa team after all these years)
Eeyyyyyy no prob! I did also upload a few "normal" episodes last year. Not sure what I'll cover this year, but I have a few ideas. Hidden Side, an episode entirely dedicated to the evolution of Lego's dragons over the years, etc. I thought I could put Lego Rewind to bed, but Lego just refuses to stop evolving... so I guess I'll always have something to say about it.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Something that I thought would be really cool in a Lego Rewind episode are those weird products Lego makes that aren't actually bricks, like the UFO and Insectoids masks that you got with some sets, or the Fright Knights cave, a giant Stingray you could build on, a wooden gun, or even W I N E .
As a parent of two kids I’ll say that the Mario advertising wasn’t really an issue since it was almost like an Easter egg. Granted my kids are still pretty young so them picking a set in the LEGO aisle in Walmart or Target does most advertising/damage to my wallet.
Honestly I like that idea of a whole retro Lego wave with all these old cancelled sets brought back to life. I feel like the Bionicle characters if they’re priced right would sell really, really well.
Great "Vidiyo"! I think I see what Lego is up to. They're trying to ease into constraction with lines like the marvel mech sets and get today's kids used to the concept. I'm pretty sure we should see Bionicle return sometime in this decade. Thanks for putting me in the credits!
I'm glad you were positive on Vidyo. While yeah it's easy to dismiss the theme for it's app integrations, the actual sets and minifigures were really well done. I just don't get why Lego spends so much time and money on the build part of these sets without actually making the app themselves they want to center on good.
I just feel like they could have made an actual play set celebrating diversity in lego rather than a display piece. Imagine if we got to see all the new kinds and styles of minifigures in some kind of park or something, like with how many of the extreme sports city sets make a point to include wheelchair users. It just felt like a half hearted effort in my opinion
Fantastic episode Nick! Loved hearing your point of view on everything, and the secret LEGO rewind episode was an awesome surprise! I totally agree with your points on vidiyo, it’s such a cool theme, but it was executed terribly. I do hope to see something to the same level of creativity soon. Also, hail Monkie kid! So glad it’s doing well! One of the best LEGO themes ever in my opinion!
Nick this might be odd to say but thank you for still posting videos every now and then. I think you rock. Good luck on future volumes of planet ripple
I think Lego should release a wave of 90th anniversary sets consisting of Classic Space, Castle, Pirates and Bionicle rather than just 1 set. A wave of 8 sets will show fan that Lego does listen to us. The good thing about Super Mario is that building and normal play still occurs, with the addition of having a physical Mario location in front of you.
@Qwerty I always thought they should do a sort of "throwback" wave where it consists of say 5 sets from each classic wave. Have the smallest set be a sort of 5$ polybag, the second smallest set be a cheap 10-15$ set, a medium grade set worth 30-50$, a large set worth 100-150$, and a huge set worth 300-400$
1:40 I really need to pick up these some time. Rocket Racer's been on my list since the theme was announced and the BIONICLE girl for a while. On the Luigi ad, as far as I remember you had to do a complicated series of actions with Mario and have him sleep for over two minutes for him to ask where Luigi was. It was a string of actions no kid would discover accidently, and even AFOLs seemed to take a month to find it. Felt more like foreshadowing than advertising to me.
I like the Vidiyo theme as well, when I heard that the cancel sets had Dinosaur Minifigs I was SUPER gutted, Dinosaur Molds that we'll never get to see, and the Metal bands would of had a Castle set!!! One more year could of really helped this line but they cut it too soon ;;
*Holy crap the timing of this video is great, I just went back to actual school after 1 and a half years of online classes (just for one day tho because it was an event), I feel like it's 2019 again, coming back from school to see one of Nick's Lego Rewind episodes. Thank you Nick*
Thank you for this awesome video. I agree with you on all the points. I also think LEGO should at least do one special 90 years anniversary set for each of the 4 themes that are still in the race. I think the biggest "problem" with Bionicle for this would be that they would either have to make a whole lot of new moulds for one single set, that won't see much use after that or they would go with a brick-built approach (kinda like the ironman figure that came out a few months ago). Would the Brick-built approach satisfy bionicle fans? If the LEGO Bricklink Designer Programm is an indicator probably not, because while I thought in that project castle and bionicle would be the main players going up against one another, Castle just completly and utterly defeated Bionicle to the point where it wasn't even close. Now I'm not a Bionicle fan, I had a few of them as a kid (mostly from the first two or three waves) but it never really clicked that much with me (maybe because all the story things weren't released in my language and the story was kept pretty vague in the catalogs) however I will not, for no single second, hate on Bionicle or say "it doesn't deserve a anniversary set!" because yes it sure does deserve one. It might not represent LEGO toys of the last 90 years best, that would always be a theme like town, pirates, space or castle, however it is an important piece of LEGO history. But honestly, the theme that probably would've deserved more than any other to be the 90 years special set would probably be Time Cruisers, as odd as that sounds. But this theme IS LEGO, all the different themes just mixed together in one. It is the perfect theme to describe what LEGO is all about. And I'm not even too much of a fan of it 😀
Imagine if Videyo had music bricks that played actual music but only a bit of a song. Put them at the ends of a single build. Collect enough sets in a certain genre and those bricks could play out an entire song. Make it modular even, and shifting parts of the song around with the builds. Might be expensive, but better than the app
The same problem was also in the nexo knights app. I remember scanning a few shields from reviews and afterwards, i found a website which cataloged all of these thing and even allowed you to do any combination for the goint bot things.
the literal idea that we might be getting Bionicle again gives me joy indescribable, and this time I can actually find it at retail, and if it does happen i might come out of lego limbo
What a great Vidiyo - I mean, video! 100% agree on your thoughts on Vidiyo as a theme and how it had a ton of potential but was super handicapped by mismanaging of the app and device. And thanks for including clips of my review in the Hagah section!
If Vidiyo started with the stage sets, knocked ~40% of the price of the BeatBoxes to begin with, and let you export your videos, it might have lasted a longer. As is, it was no surprise it would fail.
I loved the zaniness of vidiyo they had going. It felt like an experimental theme and it's ashame it was dead on arrival as a result of the app and it's prices. Not having sets until the end also probably didn't help at all. However I do think it integrated girl and boy Lego sets together very smoothly. I really wish that second series of figures was a little easier to get though, they sold out so quick and are impossible to get without having to spend a king's ransom.
*I'm glad to hear that you like the new Road Plates, I see a lot of people didn't like them but I think that it's pretty cool that they're more customizable.*
i find the Vidiyo concept to be hilariously ironic after learning UMG had funded it and how the product works. As someone who's had a front row seat to the drama that is music and copyright on the internet, i know the one thing kids on the internet love are music videos made by people who don't own the rights to the music, and here UMG has done and signed off on giving kids something that can be conveniently be used to make said videos. If it hadn't died there definitely were gonna start being headlines about UMG DMCAing the product.
I loved the mini-rewind for Vidiyo, thanks for that. It was the first non-licensed theme I’ve tried to collect, it’s a beautiful line. I think about 7/50 of my top minifigures are actually from Vidiyo. It’s a shame that you can’t find them in store shelves anymore. I’m excited to see what they try to replace it with next.
Completely agree about Vidyo. I like all the wild characters and the stages were decent build. I didn't buy any because they were just overpriced. I wonder how much these same sets could have sold for it they didn't have to pay all the licencing fees and pay to support the app we all knew was going to be problematic before they ever showed it to the public.
I agree that Lego should release a set for each of the anniversary themes. They can vary the size and budget by how many votes they got. The thing I did not like about the vote was that the wording made it sound like a one last hurrah before we sunset these forever. I hope they do not do that.
I've always wanted to make an animated anthology miniseries partially based on LEGO Vidiyo's downfall. It'll take some time to finish, but I have a fully finished script for the prologue episode, and have about 8 or 9 shorts planned.
I've had tons of fun with Vidiyo. I always carried around one of those boxes with two figures and loads of beatbits, and it turned my city into one big playground for them, with some pretty cool results. I'm bummed out that the theme got canceled, and I do blame it on a complete lack of user friendliness in the app (they have made it a lot better with updates, but too little too late), and an utter refusal to market the app to existing and to older Lego fans, with barely a nod to classic themes. They also left loads of potential to make an app where you can just make your own Lego city or other creations come to life with animated minifigures dressed in classic garb (or cool derivatives). and yeah, the complete pain of exporting and sharing videos on other platforms....such a shame.
I actually didn't even register the _Everyone is Awesome_ set as a pride flag, despite my affinity for the LGBT+ spectrum (y'know, considering I'm on it myself). I genuinely just looked at it and thought "oh, huh, rainbow set. Nifty".
I was always confused as to what Vidiyo even was, so I’m glad this video actually explained it to me. Fun designs but I do agree on the app issues and the box art especially being cluttered.
Quite cool stuff....and quite beginning to happen again. Yes, seems a shame that the "video" was so poorly organized, I mean I saw a lot of really funky (funky good) design in there. Another great presentation, thanks and happy 2022 my bud
You know, as I start to reflect for the upcoming year for my 30th birthday, I've started to become more wiser and aware of these types of things. There were two things in this video for example that really struck a chord with me after I've given it some thought.4:37 Firstly, some Americans aren't accepting the other cultures as I thought they were. Growing around these type of people has definitely give some second thoughts about being kind to everyone and accepting people for who they are. Especially, what happened during 2020 with the black community as they deserve more of our respect for their tenacity, their courage, and their creativity. Secondly, your Lego rewind content has definitely given me more of a drive to get back into Legos. I do appreciate all the time you take out of your schedule to explore the history and cultural impact that these toys I've had on so many peoples lives. It's definitely been more important to me than ever as I start pursuing a professional career as a story artist/illustrator with hopes to work at Pixar. Lego reminds me that there is still creativity in this world and it should be pursued by many different artists who are trying to make the mark on this planet.
Trust me, they're saving the big waves of retro releases for the 100th anniversary. Heck, we might even see a reimagining of each Major Set Category or even the return of a color or two.
Those Vidyo sets are some of the coolest sets I've seen in a while. This is the kind of stuff that I would've loved to see as a kid. It's a shame lego didn't seem to have confidence in it because the aesthetic alone could've carried it. It could've worked so much better if they sold the minifigs with a small set piece like a speaker, then have the the larger sets be customizable with each band's parts.
The biggest problem Vidiyo had in my opinion was the price. 20 bucks for one minifigure is what the smaller sets amounted to, as the rest of it like the carring case didn't bring much to the table. One could argue that you are paying for the app and that the minifig are really really good, but I just think it's extemely excessive. There's a reason you can still find them on discount everywhere. The bigger builds are fine even if they have small issues.
I was curious to hear your thoughts on the Titanic set that came out in November, but that was pretty close to the end of the year so maybe in the 2022 Year in Review. I think it's really cool and fitting that it's the biggest official Lego model ever (well technically second biggest if going solely by piece count as the World Map has more but I don't personally count it as a traditional Lego model in the same way the Titanic is). But also how Lego branched out to create an official set based on a historical tragedy, but the focus is on celebrating the ship itself and the marvel of engineering she was, which I really appreciate as a Titanic fan and ocean liner fan in general. I was lucky to get one on the day of release and I'm waiting on building it until April for the 110th anniversary of the sinking.
Lego City Missions was just revealed, with app integration, but I think it's the best shot yet. The actual sets look great, so Lego realized that the building toy aspect needs to come first.
My take on Bionicle in the lego poll was “this is what GOT US to legos 90 year anniversary, without it we wouldn’t have gotten other creative goldmines like ninjago or chima or monke kid. But I do understand that it ain’t quite the best summary of lego, it may be their best work in my opinion, but this is a celebration of lego as a whole,
Nick this video has inspired me to put my only three Vidiyo minifigs back on display and now I'm thinking about picking up a few more when I got to the store in an hour. So cheers haha
Vidiyo didn’t deserve an app, Im happy to say I was able to get every minifigure. This is the only time that I’ve ever bought the entirety of a Lego theme.
Honestly I wish I was conscious of Vidiyo enough to consider getting a set. The vibrant colors and fiddly bits make them feel like a goofy, feel-good version of Hidden Side.
The thing that kills me about how nice the Vidiyo figures are, is that instead of doing this, what if they had used all these minifig designs in their own original themes?
Also i've finally been playing Nier Automata recently, and for some reason that toa hagah fanart/mocs really made me think of a platinum/yoko taro style game with them.
Ya know, the only thing I really like about vidiyo mini figures have super NEAT parts that could make customising your own mini figures more cooler. Maybe even see some of these guys appear in some sort of cyber punk styled moc pictures even. So it has that going for it in my eyes at least!
I absolutely agree with you on Vidiyo. I really enjoy the theme a lot, and the app has nothing to do with it. Like the concept of the app sounded neat, but what got me interested were those fig designs. I'm real glad I was at least able to get the Robo Hip Hop Car before Lego killed the line. It was a real fun build and I love to play around with it and just admire it. Maybe I'll try to get one of the other sets while they're on clearance, but regardless I'm always happy to grab at least one set from Lego's original themes. Heck, I wound up getting my hands on a couple Hidden Side sets before that theme ended and they're pretty great too. As much as I love looking back at Lego history and wishing for certain sets that have long been retired, it's still great to appreciate what's going on now before it becomes history.
Been rewatching Lego rewind, and made my way to this one, and I find Vidiyo fascinating as a line. Like I love these character designs. I love the neon animal people and the robots and aliens. I envy whoever got to do concept art for this theme. I also think Lego fundamentally had a good instinct: Sets that would play nice with video sharing platforms like TikTok would be an absolute monster hit. Like if Vidiyo became a TikTok Challenge Lego execs would suffocate in money... if it happened. You can never make those kinds of big internet events happen, because the internet is a bizarro world that runs on irony and surrealism. It would've been better if Lego had just built the sets with making cool music videos with them in mind, and forsaken the whole app and UMG deal entirely. Give people the tools and let it happen organically, which seems like a much more Lego play model to me. Makes me wonder if Lego approached UMG, or UMG approached Lego...
Vidiyo was my favorite theme since Bionicle ended, maybe even second favorite of all time. I understand what happened but god it deserved better than it got. 2022 and we have absolutely no new themes, I don't even think there are any new subthemes unless you count individual sets like the school or Sonic.
I think the issue with vydio is parents buy kids lego to get them off there phones and engaging in creativity so making it involve a smart phone isn’t what parents want who at the age range they are targeting with hidden side and Vydio the parents have the money not the kids
I’m hoping monke kid doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. Like the sets are cool and all but I feel there is redundance in lego’s current theme lineup. Or maybe ninjago should finally croak, although that will probably never happen.
@@NickonPlanetRipple ya I’d say so too. I used to be peeved that it was staying around despite there already being another Asian inspired theme sitting around but I thought about it and monke kid isn’t forever and I’m sure we’ll get something different eventually.
@@frogmouth2 I mean, Asia is a big place. There can be 2 themes centered about Asian culture without it being repetitive. No to mention Lego put so much work into MK so it could break into China, I don't know if they would be willing to cast that aside when it seems like it's been such a success in that region. Same for Ninjago, it has such a huge appeal and recognition that Lego's probably not going to want to replace it.
@@Obi-Wan_Kenobi your right, asia is a huge place. I should specify east asia. Lego has done a lot of east Asia with system recently. So until lego either axes monke kid for something less similar stylistically to ninjago or atleast puts it in a spot where it can coexist with ongoing themes, alike ninjago i can’t see myself buying much more lego in the near future. Whatever they do, I’m hoping they don’t shove 6 colour coated ninjas into it.

Nifty".
Rewatching this while building the boombox
If Bionicle won then they could've made a set with all SIX of the original Toa!
tbh I love the fact that video had more anthro creatures and amazing new molds
when it comes to lego there are only so many anthro animals
Disney are such hippies for changing the name of the Slave 1!
Trust me, they're saving the big waves of retro releases for the 100th anniversary. Heck, we might even see a reimagining of each Major Set Category or even the return of a color or two.
The return of Rocket racer is like seeing pocket circuit fighter return in Yakuza games post Yakuza 0
A convertable Boombox? The potential to convert that set into a Soundwave transformer is right there!
That certainly was one of the more unique years to be a Lego fan…😂🙏 Great video man!
You did it. You added Buck Bumble as background music for the Vidiyo rewind. Fantastic.
I can still get the Vidiyo sets in the next city over at a shop called Sir Troy's Toy Kingdom, I'm actually going there for my 30th birthday in June.
I picked up a few of the Videyo sets on clearance recently for me and a buddy. I mostly wanted them for the record tiles.
I just can't think of anything to say about it.
@@NickonPlanetRipple Ok that’s more than fair.
Second way of blind boxes did come to my Location
I hope one day that either ccbs or the technic bionicle system will return one day it was cool making your own action figures
Lego City Missions was just revealed, with app integration, but I think it's the best shot yet. The actual sets look great, so Lego realized that the building toy aspect needs to come first.
Woo new vid from nick! Thanks mate, really brightens our day!
I brought The Vidiyo Candy Castle myself and I find it to be a pretty cool set. I really like the bear with the trans blue legs a lot.
My take on Bionicle in the lego poll was “this is what GOT US to legos 90 year anniversary, without it we wouldn’t have gotten other creative goldmines like ninjago or chima or monke kid. But I do understand that it ain’t quite the best summary of lego, it may be their best work in my opinion, but this is a celebration of lego as a whole,
I also really liked the physical side of VIDIYO, the only Lego Theme I own 100% of 😄
Another brick built skull 💀
Nick this video has inspired me to put my only three Vidiyo minifigs back on display and now I'm thinking about picking up a few more when I got to the store in an hour. So cheers haha
Yes! LEGO Rewind is back, baby! Your first "Vidiyo" of 2022! Also, I've rewatched the Hero Factory episode ENDLESSLY. It's that good!
The thing that kills me about how nice the Vidiyo figures are, is that instead of doing this, what if they had used all these minifig designs
in their own original themes?
Nick on Planet Ripple. *uploads*
Me: A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Me, when I saw this appearing in my recommendations: "A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!"
P.S: Glad to see you back, thanks for making this!
Nick predicted the space revamps of Lego Space and Blacktron
RIP LLAMA you definitely existed for a while
While I'm bummed that LEGO World Builder didn't get a mention in this rewind, I'm glad I stuck around until the end.
Oh.... shoot, I knew I was forgetting something.
WOOOOOO
OK maybe that wasn't chill enough for these fantastic videos
Also i've finally been playing Nier Automata recently, and for some reason that toa hagah fanart/mocs really made me think of a platinum/yoko taro style game with them.
I could see it.
The rainbow set could work for the different Lantern corps from DC.
The Luigi thing REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. Thankfully that seemed to be the concensus.
When I saw this thumbnail I was like....Yeah baby let's go🤣🤙
Your taste in OSTs is impeccable.
Music is part of the Lego Rewind experience.
Oh god, I really look forward to seeing what you think about Scrunkly Tahu.
I love the heavy metal monsters so much, they look like if Rob Zombie made a fictional band like Gorillaz
What a wonderful way to start my morning
Vidiyo was my favorite theme since Bionicle ended, maybe even second favorite of all time. I understand what happened but god it deserved better than it got.
2022 and we have absolutely no new themes, I don't even think there are any new subthemes unless you count individual sets like the school or Sonic.
Holy F U C K. Rocket Racer is back??????????????? Take my money.
I think the issue with vydio is parents buy kids lego to get them off there phones and engaging in creativity so making it involve a smart phone isn’t what parents want who at the age range they are targeting with hidden side and Vydio the parents have the money not the kids
Great video as always! ✌
Finally I have been waiting for a long time
I actualy considered buying that pirate ship stage. It looked fun, I just didnt know where to put it.
"what's your favorite musical Lego wav..." "Piraka" "but that's not" "yo yo piraka!"
I’m hoping monke kid doesn’t overstay it’s welcome. Like the sets are cool and all but I feel there is redundance in lego’s current theme lineup. Or maybe ninjago should finally croak, although that will probably never happen.
I'm just excited to see something new finally break the 2 1/2 year barrier. It's been ages since a non-licensed LEGO theme made it past 5 waves.
*Nice, I was just thinkkng about Nick's videos right now, Happy late New Year Nick!!!!!!!! :D*
