How the Starter System works in a motorcycle

  • In this video I explain how the battery, ignition switch, starter solenoid and engine start button work together in the low current circuit to supply power to the starter motor through the high current circuit to get your motorcycle engine turning over.
    I wired up all the components in two basic circuits on my work bench and connect them to a real engine to demonstrate it all working.
    Note that on some motorcycles there is additional components in the starter system which can further complicate the circuits. Components such as the clutch switch, the neutral switch, the kill switch, the side stand switch and so on. As these components are not on all motorcycles I didn't include them in the discussion but I hope to do videos on these additional components in the future and explain how they affect the starter system.

    Thanks! My starter solenoid connector socket failed with corrosion and this helped me to understand the starter system and troubleshoot to find the problem

    Just about to diagnose and hopefully fix the lack of starter on my 1982 Suzuki GS650G. The starter stopped working on a ride. I removed the side panels, jiggled the connections and the starter worked fine again. But once home the starter stopped working again. So, here I am watching your vid to consider how to trace the wiring between the battery, starter and switch and back.

      It should be very similar in layout to the starter system in this video. Take a look at my video on battery issues as well. It could be that also. I've seen a few cases where it was a loose fuse as well. It's probably going to be something very simple like a slightly loose connection or a rusty grounding point

    Great video with detailed explanation, just wondering if we accidentally press the starter button while the engine is already running in stationary idle, what will happen?
    will it engage the starter motor to spin again?
    OR
    the ECU will cut off the ground as it reads the engine is already running so it wont engage the starter motor anymore?
    OR
    the starter motor gear is always rotating all the time while the engine is running so it wont effect eventhough we accidently press the starter button avain while the engine is running?
    i've tried once pressing the starter button while the engine running and it has like friction sound or something like grinding sound or similar...will it damage the starter motor pinion gear, reduction gear, crankshaft gear?
    looking forward to your expert explanation
    Thank You and keep up the good work for more great videos wih very detailed explanation ❤

    Tks for the great explanation. Question…after starting my bike, the starter motor continued running, despite turning the ignition switch to OFF. Can I assume that BOTH the ignition switch AND the starter switch are faulty, cos BOTH needs to have closed circuit to run the starter motor?

    does that starter motor continue spinning even after engine starts to run or it stops spinning after the engine starts

    Great video 😀👍👍👍👍one question, is this a standard system for different makes of motorcycles? Japanese, Chinese, USA and Europe. Again great video

    • @TheMotorcycleMuse
      @TheMotorcycleMuse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's fairly standard. I'm not aware of a model that uses a different system but there is probably some.

      @@TheMotorcycleMuse as you mentioned some starter motors are attached to the left crank case and some you can just unbolt it and it goes off. perhaps that's the only thing

    Sometime I hit starter button but nothing happens, sometime no problem but now no matter how many time I try no respond. Battery is ok, solenoid started ok, I bought new anyway, so where is problem? Bike is suzuki bandit 1200

    Could you tell me the actual motorcycle components that must be connected directly to the battery ground? I’m just rewiring my motorcycle without a wiring diagram. Thanks

    • @TheMotorcycleMuse
      @TheMotorcycleMuse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually no parts connected directly to ground terminal of battery. Terminal of battery connected to frame so it becomes the ground point all around the motorcycle. Every electrical component is connected to ground through the frame grounding points which varies from motorcycle to motorcycle I'm afraid.

      To The Motorcycle Muse, how would you wire in the on/off red rocker switch above the push start button, can you explain the connection a little more for all 5 components i.e the key switch, on/off rocker switch, the push start button, the starter solenoid and last the starter, 6 components if you count the battery.

    It’s great that you’ve made these videos, but…I feel you should have scripted them rather than the obvious ad-lib, I’m looking for tutorials for my daughter presented in just this fashion but became exasperated by the umming and awwing, the dumbing down to a level not in keeping with the presentation and the hanging on a subject referred to a previous video, I’m not wanting to be negative, I just feel you have something here that you could seriously raise the game on
