    I love all 3 equally: Donkey Kong Country 1 is a lush, atmospheric introduction to the environments and characters, and the only game where you play as Donkey Kong. He makes his best bud Diddy feel welcome along for the ride. Plenty of challenges, and the first confrontation with K. Rool is memorable. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest is the most epic and cute - Diddy and Dixie make the best team out of the 3 pairings, and overall, it is without question the most exciting. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble cements itself with non-linear exploration, mystery and intrigue - and there's no denying that Dixie and Kiddy are cute together. One of the best trilogies ever made.

    13:32 "In certain levels, you'll jump into a barrel, which will transform you into that animal. THERE'S NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE, except you don't get an extra hit, but you DON'T HAVE TO CHASE THE ANIMAL BUDDY down if you get hit."
    That's what I thought for longest time. However, I recently saw another review of the game that pointed out that it's actually a TOTAL GAME-CHANGER!
    You see, in DKC1, there was always a possibility that you could lose your animal buddy and never get it back. That meant that it would be pretty unfair for the levels to require the animal buddies' abilities, as it would make the levels infuriatingly difficult, if not IMPOSSIBLE, if you lost your animal buddy. As a result, in DKC1, the animal buddies were nice to have, but were never really NECESSARY, unless you were going for secrets (and even THEN there were usually ways to get them without the animal buddies).
    However, with TRANSFORMING into the animal buddies, the possibility of losing your animal buddy was gone! This allowed Rare to actually design levels AROUND THE ANIMAL BUDDIES' ABILITIES. Levels like Rattle Battle and Web Woods were MADE for their respective animal buddies in a way that levels in DKC1 just couldn't be.

    Almost everyone forgot the real reason people didn't pay much attention to DKC3. The Nintendo 64 was released before it meaning that most people were playing SM64, Starfox and Goldeneye instead of focusing on DKC 3 or any other Super Nintendo game for that matter.

      Somehow my OSH (Out of School Hours) care years later had DKC3 for its SNES. I don't know how but obviously someone connected to the school was stockpiling old games and consoles.

    I love all three games, but the third one has always been my favorite. It seems like most reviews don't really bring all the improvements to the table, and instead focus on superficial elements that may have been better in the second (such as all the disdain around Kiddy Kong). I'm not trying to say that 3 is better than 2, but I wonder if your opinion would be different if you had played the game when it was released and had the same nostalgic connection to it as you have with 2.
    That aside, enjoyable video!

    • @dreamsdeep1076
      @dreamsdeep1076 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My favorite is DKC1, but DKC3 goes in as my second favorite games of all time. As for the DKC2. I don’t like the game as much as first and third game of trilogy. I find the second game way too difficult in my opinion and overall not fun. I can replay the first and third game countless times but the second game I only beaten once and that’s where my experience with DKC2 ends here.

  • @ExorionHagen
    @ExorionHagen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    In my opinion this is the best review for the DKC trilogy! Not because of the standart information, more because that personal detail and charm you put in that video, never had the feeling that someone else was doing the same. Definatly should be checked out by every fan of DKC and reviews!
    Btw, nice punts and a hilarious ending, thanks for that. Really lookin forward to your next videos and I hope you get the 100k views (even if you deserve way more).

    Great review of the trilogy. These 3 games are my favorite games of all time. I'm 32 now and was 9,10 and 11 when they each came out. Hours of fun playing to full completion. I still own them all to this day complete in box. My son is now getting to the age where I can sit and play them with him.

    It's been the opposite for me, I completely missed out on DKC2 and only had 1 and 3.
    But one day when I was back into playing Snes games, my friend's cousin offered to sell me DKC2. But my friend was a jerk and bought it from him, so I couldn't own the game. He at least let me borrow it and it was my FIRST TIME playing it. It was literally Thanksgiving Day and I was down with a cold all of a sudden. But I played STRAIGHT through the entire game that night. I LOVED it, I had no idea this game existed!!
    One of the BEST SNES games that I ever missed out on as a kid. At least I was 12 when I did get to play it.

    Actually, the DK barrel is still special for its initials. 😎
    Fun Fact: In Japan, Kiddy's name is actually Dinky Kong (thereby keeping the specialness of the initials DK), and "Kiddy" is merely a nickname (like with Tails from Sonic fame). According to the Wiki page. the full name is Dinky "Kiddy" Kong. As for why he is not known outside of Japan as "Dinky", I don't know, I can't find any info on it, sorry.
    Diddy Kong's original name was "Dinky" (until it was changed due to Rare having legal concerns), however Kiddy's Japanese name did become Dinky. Then when the game was released worldwide, he got the nickname "Kiddy" slapped on as his official name and the rest is history (in all senses of the word).

    I believe the reason why the GBA remake of DKC3 had a changed soundtrack is because the music in the original SNES version was too deep toned for the GBA's speakers, so David Wise created a brand new soundtrack to fix that. The new GBA soundtrack is actually pretty good, it has a few mediocre songs but it also has some great ones!

  • @SteeleyBoy1989

    Actually if this theory is correct which it has been confirmed , then since Cranky Kong was the original Donkey Kong fighting against Mario back in the classic game "Donkey Kong" and is modern Donkey Kong's Grandfather it is obvious that Donkey Kong Jr. is the son of Cranky Kong, meaning that Donkey Kong Jr. is not the guy in Donkey Kong Country, that is Donkey Kong Jr son.
    so it would be as follows or at least would make the most sense
    Cranky Kong = Donkey Jr. = Donkey Kong
    therefore making Cranky Kong, Donkey Kong's grandfather, and making Donkey Kong Jr. the father of the modern Donkey Kong
    like its been said before Cranky Kong is not Donkey Kong's father its his grandfather , so who exactly do you think is Donkey Kong's father , well its obvious to say that it would Donkey Kong Jr.
    (P.S i could be wrong, but it seems to make the most sense)

    Bit late to the party but as far as I remember you actually DO get an extra hit in animal transformations, which is what the bottom left icon indicates, and hitting a barrel with no extra "health" should actually give you back that health icon.

    • @millieman76
      @millieman76 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The second one had much more variety in terms of gameplay, but not gimmicks.
      Not to mention the third one had no real plot to it, even in the gba port which valued less on the intiative to play.
      Yes, the first two didnt have intros either. But they had a charm.
      The third one was actually rushed since its time was close to the snes closing and honestly the characters were that appealing.
      I dont mind dixie, but kiddy kong wasnt much of a sight to see.
      But thats my guess.

      +millieman76 I don't understand. What plot was in the first two games? Someone got kidnapped, ok, cool. That was pretty much it for all three games.
      I also wouldn't exactly call the gameplay in 3 gimmicks. Each stage had its own little challenge just as much as the first or second one.
      Anyway, if you don't care of the third game thats fine, and I wouldn't necessarily argue over which of the three games are better since I think they're all so fantastic. I just wish the third one wasn't brushed aside so much

    I think the reason why the DK Country Trilogy games are not on the Wii Virtual Console anymore is probably due to some copyright issues that Nintendo were dealing with Rareware, considering that Rareware developed those games & not Nintendo, and that they now work with Microsoft. But that's just my theory.

      donkey kong as a brand belongs to nintendo as an individual property tho...if anything nintendo has all ownership over the game...example would be how super mario rpg, which is developed by square but the brand of mario is owned by nintendo thus allowing full rights for nintendo to have it on the Eshop

    • @GreenyNeko
      @GreenyNeko 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yes, Donkey Kong and their family belong to Nintendo due to Jumpman aka the old Donkey Kong game. You may have noticed that in the newer Donkey Kong Country Games there are no Kremlings. This is because Nintendo have no rights for the Kremlings and as they're part of the first 3 games of the DKC series there won't be any DKC 1-3 on the Wii Virtual Console. I wish Nintendo would have bought Rareware back before all those developers left. They would've definitely earned more money with Rareware than with the wii. Or maybe with Rareware AND the Wii.

    • @cjszero01
      @cjszero01  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      GreenNekoHaunt
      That is incorrect. The Kremlings have been in the Mario Striker series, Barrel Blast, Konga, Mario Super Sluggers, and trophies in Brawl. All of them came out after Rare was acquired by Microsoft so the idea that Rare owns the Kremlings is false.

      ***** You do have a point there. And now that you mentioned that, I have a feeling that Nintendo's doing something special with those games, considering that Tropical Freeze just came out recently & it was very well received.

    • @GreenyNeko
      @GreenyNeko 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonnathan Sosa Well from what I heard part of the former Rareware team went to Retrostudio's (who created Tropical Freeze and are part of Nintendo) another part of the team moved on making their own games and the rest... who knows probably doing a normal job or enjoying life. The reason I know all this is because I took a little research on the whole topic as I like many others am a huge fan of what Rareware did and was able to do back in the days. You can follow MingyMongo on Twitter to get some recent indie-game information from some of the ex-rareware developers.

    DKC2 is definitely one of my favorite 2D platformers, as well as games in general, of all time. It`s a well-made game that`s very fun to play, has plenty of variety in it, and has lots of secrets to find with a good payoff that convinces me to get 102% every time I play.
    The first DKC is also a great game, and I like replaying it every once in a while. Sadly though, like you said, finding all of the bonus rooms is pretty pointless and not worth the effort, so that definitely hurts it's replay value. But again, still a great game.
    DKC3 is definitely my least favorite of the trilogy. Still a good game, with plenty of good levels and variety, but the soundtrack is terrible when compared to the first two, with barely any songs that I like or even remember, and the game's atmosphere just feels kinda...off to me for some reason.
    Nice review, and worth the wait. :)

    I freaking loved the Brother's Bear. As a kid I was blown away that suddenly what had been a pure platformer got a few extra RPG elements and a slightly more fleshed out world.
    I've just played them in reverse order and I can totally understand why for most people DCK2 is the best, but personally the additions made in DKC3 make it the closest to my heart.
    The original must have felt amazing on release, but playing it in a universe where the other two exist, it feels like it's missing too many features. Where are my DK coins! Why can't I team up anymore!!
    In terms of things DKC2 got wrong, I hate not having enough coins to save and having to go grind for them, or the fact that just after beating a boss, I can't go save straight away, at times having to play through multiple levels first. As a kid, I never got past the second world because I had so much trouble beating the sword boss, and then didn't have enough lives to get through the first few levels of Krem Quay to the save point.
    Adult me was a little better at the game...
    Anyway in summary, all three games kick freaking arse, but I like DKC3 just as much as DKC2 and more than DKC1

    Sir, I love you. Don't take that the wrong way. DKC2 is also my favorite Dk and also my favorite SNES Game. I just wish others gave it a chance because the only reason those people said that it's not as good as the first game, was because there were "too many" collectibles and Donkey Kong wasn't playable...really?!

    I always prefered DKC3 over DKC2, unlike most people, I only ever owned DKC1 and DKC3 growing up and didn't get to play DKC2 till I was older (but it was worth the wait it was feckin awesome), just as you did with DKC3, I think its just a nostalgia thing for most people why DKC3 is the black sheep of the trilogy seeing as most moved onto the N64 when it came out than playing it, but it is a great game.

    DKC3's GBA remake had a different soundtrack because Eveline Fisher's Snes soundtrack almost exclusively uses deep basses and percussions. They were impossible to pull off for the GBA's sound chip, so David Wise made a completely new soundtrack. Not as good as his works in DKC1& 2 but he didn't have a lot of time for the task.

    Strongly disagree with you in regards to the musical content in the original DKC 3. It was probably the most nostalgic to me aside from the first DKC and had a bunch of catchy songs. Rockface Rumble to this day is still stuck in my head. I think you may be a little biased, only because of the sentimental value it's predecessor had on you which is understandable. As a kid growing up, I was never find a physical copy of the second installment, so I went straight to three...which is why it probably stuck me with me the most. Nevertheless, all three titles rule and are easily some of the best snes games ever released!

      Before I personally owned all 3 DKC games on the Wii's Virtual Console, DKC3 was the game I played the most. I think it was either the only DKC game that my school's OSH care had, or it was the one everybody played.
      The music is pretty much just as nostalgiac to me as it is in the other games, and I've been able to deduct that I love DKC3's soundtrack just as much as DKC2's and DKC's.

      The soundtrack is really good like the others, and according to Exo in his review, they changed the soundtrack because of the game's use of low pitches in the songs, which could make the GBA burst into flames.

    To get 102% in DKC2 you need to collect all 75 kcoins, all 40 DK coins, and talk to each member of the Kong family. Wrinkly, Funky, Cranky, and Swanky all count for 1% towards completion. Hope this still helps someone!

    Overall I feel DKC3's core gameplay is better than DKC1's; the trading and banana birds excluded. It's more interesting with more varied "gimmicks" which work really well. I also thought the soundtrack was better than DKC1's. The bonus & boss themes are all the best in the trilogy, and you also have tracks like Nuts and Bolts, Stilt Village, and Cavern Caprice. And don't get me started on Rockface Rumble. How do you go and remix my favorite DKC track so quickly?
    It still doesn't touch DKC2, but that just my opinion.

    • @k-leb4671
      @k-leb4671 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the DCK3 bonus and boss themes (Bonus Time and Boss Boogie, respectively). Songs like those make me question why almost everybody instantly goes to DKC2 as their favorite soundtrack and completely ignore DKC3.

    • @twobei
      @twobei 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      DKC1s level are kind of bland (especially fear factory... stairs up, stairs down... Great design!)
      It is a good game just for the graphics and music (and the controls).
      Don't get me wrong, the level design was not bad but I think even NSMB did a better job (except I still like DKC more because it has some gimmick to each level while NSMB is more like a pile of garbage)
      The other two games had pretty good level design and DKC3 is very underrated.
      I never played one of these games back in the day but the soundtrack in all three of them is awesome, the controls are okay imo, not NSMB level(the only thing it really does very well indeed.. lol), but still good.
      DKCTF tops them all in my opinion :P
      And the soundtrack is so massive it makes DKC2 look like sh*t when looking at the numbers and how well the soundtrack is is just subjective (But really... DKC2s soundtrack is beautiful TwT) :D
      DKCR is very very frustrating. Not even funny anymore xD
      DKCTF found a very good space between difficulty and frustration.
      Retro was the right choice for continuing the games :P
      Do not get me wrong, it's just hard talking about great games without making me look like a hater xD

    The extra 2 percent comes from paying for all of Cranky's tips, Wrinkly's advice, and completing all of Swanky's games successfully. You only get this 2 percent, though, if you have 100 percent. So you could do all those things, but if you don't have all the bonus areas complete, you can still have just 99%.

    Really excellent series overview. I especially like how you explain in a more personal way where you were in life when you played them, memories associated and what those experiences mean to you in retrospect. Reviews never address this and it's SO IMPORTANT, especially for the classics. It's foolish to pretend our opinions are completely objective and emotionally sterile.

    Well, DKC3 is my favorite because it forces you to explore the overworld and not just follow a single path like the first two games. The levels are more creative, the graphics are more realistic and Dixie and Kiddy are the best team up. Each one has their unique abilities which make them very special. DKC3 makes you feel you're part of their adventure and not just a player.

    So there's this way to make Winky Kong save your game for free every time in DK2. When you start the game and reach Winky, don't save yet. Progress to funkys flights, jump in the barrel and re-enter the first world. Go straight to Winky and save. Now she won't ever charge you 2 coins to save! Do this process every time you enter a new world because it only affects the one kong kollage at a time.

    When I play Mario Superstar Baseball for the Gamecube, unlike other people that play all three Donkey Kong Country games in trilogy, that in the spinoff Mario games, they return characters from three of the games and return Diddy Kong's sidekick/love entrance, Dixie Kong and when I start to play as Dixie Kong in many spinoff Mario games, it was very cool to have her back in recent Donkey Kong and Mario game titles. but the part that throws me off about her returning appearance is to wonder, "What about Kiddy Kong, her major sidekick in Donkey Kong Country 3?" and that question was made so I could get my hands on playing as that character instead of owning Donkey Kong Country 3

    DKC3 is underrated, but I think the biggest issue that holds it back are the fact that in the first two you had two great characters, with Dixie as the standout. I almast always pick her in Tropical Freeze. I also agree that the second one has the best score and graphics, but man those canyon levels the first time. Finally felt like they upped the visual standard. I do think it's always been the case that DKC tests your mettle as a gamer too. Getting 200% in Returns is no doubt the hardest gaming experience I've had. Just got TF last month and it has me pretty intimidated about even trying my luck at mirror mode again.
