It's worth mentioning that you should use an HD timeline (1920x1080) when creating the thumbnail. If you use a UHD timeline then the resulting JPG/PNG file will be too large and YT will reject it as a thumbnail upload.
Thank you for mentioning this- do you know if we need to do anything else regarding the dimensions of the image following the method in this video? I see a lot of thumbnail tutorials starting with a “template” for TH-cam thumbnails- does setting it to 1920 by 1080 conform to that template?
You've got to be kidding me. This was literally on my to do list as well haha! I'm amazed by your upload schedule man. Do you do everything yourself? You pump out videos like daily board meetings in the corporate world!
And Casey posted just after I had suffered through transfering through about three programs. I noticed one could do it in Davinci but didn't know how. Here we are. Thanks man.
For those who don't have the colored border option available, here is an easy way to add a colored border in the Edit tab with no adjustment clips: th-cam.com/video/A28GLO5g98Y/w-d-xo.html
Casey, absolutely love your channel. As someone new to resolve and editing in general, I cannot thank you enough! Crazy how what takes you 2 minutes takes me 20, thats the fun of learning I guess :)
Thank you!I know this is an 'older' video, but your series is helping me learn Davinci...even though don't 'have time' to learn Davinci! Very much appreciated!
i wanna thank you so much i just started trying to stream and make youtube and start editing which i have 0 skill in lol but i didnt know this app can make thumbnails and now im going to keep coming back to this video till i get good at it thank you so much ill bring watching more for more on this software thanks for the tips and tricks
I had a little project to do and this was perfect to help me get done what I needed. Thank you for the ongoing instruction, as well as the humour that you build into every video!
Another great vid. Very entertaining and fun! Casey, can you do a video on how to create that colored outline of your mug shot found on your thumbnails? Maybe show how you make your thumbnails (but not as cool) where you do that highlighted outline? Subscribed !
Hi Casey, so I have this question for you: I used to create my thumbnails by finding a nice frame of myself (I'm vain that way) I would then move whatever relevant clip, or clips, I needed in the background to give potential viewers an idea of what I was talking about. I didn't save, so when I'd finished assembling the thumbnail, I'd close DVR, which would return the timeline to how it was before I started fiddling about with the sequence. Now, the DaVinci Gods have decided too many people can't hit SPLAT/S and they have made saving automatic. Which means that I have to find my way back to the original setup by trying to remember which bit I was up to in the History menu. Of course, being a forgetful old bat I can't remember where I was and end up splat zedding until I think all the pieces have moved back to where they were. Sometimes they have, and sometimes they have not. I've got to be doing this wrong. Perhaps you can enlighten me.
Casey,. Man thank you so much for this video and others that you have. I've only had a computer capable of opening resolve for almost a month and feel so much more comfortable using it having ZERO prior knowledge of video editing and now uploading my 3rd video tomorrow. Thanks again.
So, I successfully made a thumbnail or two copying Casey’s steps but, I didn’t LEARN it. Now, I will make multiple thumbnails over a short period of time to ACTUALLY learn it. Repetition amiright?
always good to learn new techniques to improve ourselves. I am just switching from imovie to davinci but when I try to deliver the video, I am not able to browse to select the destination so I decided to download davinci 17 and see if I have better luck
That's awesome... Was just thinking of why can't we do the thumbnail right in resolve itself and here it is... The export part is awesome by the way...
Thank you so much for making this. I asked this a few weeks or month ago if you could do this! Thank you so much!!!! I do not want to have to rent PH each month for 4 thumb nails a month. I watched the entire ad for this video lol. Thanks again.
If this was for beginners, then what am I because I don't know what you did to outline her in the fusion tab. I had NO IDEA what you were doing in the colour tab except you had 2 nodes open (don't know why). Everything else I understood.
If I want to make an coloured outline of the masked picture, how do I do that? Love your videoes ...I've just begun to use DaVinci after using Hitfilm for several years now.
I don't have the _Effects->Fusion Effects_ in my version or DaVinci Resolve. I'm running Resolve 16.2.7. It that a v17 thing or a Studio thing? I could *REALLY* USE that "Colored Border" Fusion effect.
That's great. However, I think you will find that the exported thumbnail image will be too large and TH-cam will reject it. The TH-cam limits are: 1) be no larger than 1280x720 pixels and 2) maximum file size of 2MB. Can you control that while exporting it from Resolve? (I've been using GIMP to shrink it after the export.)
I'm having this issue also:( and if I make it a (jpeg) then it looks terrible. There has got to be a solution without making it look like a low quality pixel game.
We have a Mac. We opened the 2.3 MB Thumbnail in Preview. From the top menu, "File" > "Export", then repeatedly slid the "Quality Slider" to the left little bits at a time (releasing the mouse button / touch pad each time) till the file size went under the 2 MB. BTW thanks Casey :) Cheers mate
Hi Casey, i really like your video and hope you well. I have a question, how to choose the thumbnail when you export the video. I mean when you're done exporting the video. In explorer or windows you will see the video but its thumbnail representation is not what you expected. For example: I am using Capcut PC and while I export the video file I can edit the thumbnail easily by selecting in the video or image that I like. I also love Davici but when I export the video I don't see the same option! Looking forward to your answer, thank you very much.
Really, really helpful. Thanks. Is there a way to make the thumbnail in the same file as my movie but not have it exported as part of the movie when I render it for TH-cam? Can I use a second timeline or something? New guy question, yes....
Omg thank you so much I had the porblem when it said this file is not an image but it was bc it was a video on resolve lol. I like how you can cut out the image which is cool. U deserve a sub man.
Casey is single handedly making me feel more confident in my videos with all of these tutorials!
There are a lot of options at FROZ ENP A. C 0 M
I agree 🙌🏻
Yes, He is your friendly video editor who can explain everything in a simple and clear way.

@@crypastesomemore8348 1920x1080 or any smaller 16:9 ratio is fine. The only other restriction is a maximum filesize of (from memory) 2MB.
How do you set up “an HD timeline” in DR?
@@TC_Conner Via the project settings page.
@@TC_Conner In your project settings, just make sure your dimensions are set to 1920x1080.
I started my niche channel 31st August 2023, I can't believe how cool resolve is for FREE. Blows my mind!
Casey is such a treat. And this video proves it even more. PUPPIES!
You've got to be kidding me. This was literally on my to do list as well haha! I'm amazed by your upload schedule man. Do you do everything yourself? You pump out videos like daily board meetings in the corporate world!

Here we are. Thanks man.
I was actually looking for tutorials exactly on doing this in Resolve last night, couldn't find anything until right now! Awesome, thanks!
I've been making all my thumbnails in fusion recently, it's such a powerful tool, and once you've learned a few keyboard short cuts it's really fast.
I still watch your videos even if they are on subjects I'm not interested in because I always learn something new. Thank you!
Amazing! Easy to follow, created a Thumbnail in 20 mins never having done one before. Thank you! 💙💙

That's what I call an AWESOME tutorial.

Casey,.
Man thank you so much for this video and others that you have. I've only had a computer capable of opening resolve for almost a month and feel so much more comfortable using it having ZERO prior knowledge of video editing and now uploading my 3rd video tomorrow. Thanks again.

you the best man for real. as a beginner you have helped me a lot. I am really grateful
Photoshop: Is already lagging out the computer
Casey : Use DaVinci for making thumbnails
you can also export from the fusion page

Anyone count the number of times "puppies" was said???
Excellent 10 minute video on the topic of thumbnails!
I may end up mothballing photoshop now. Also, you are a funny guy, usually my motivation for watching you over some of these other guys.
I love that cheeky lil Nacho Libre quote😏
Great tutorial Casey. Taking it for my design.
You are a king man!! ..... thank you sooooo much

Looks like it is available in the free version of Davinci Resolve 17.

i need the answer for that too
