I am a frequent solo gamer. My desire to play games is much more frequent than my friends/family, so I am always looking for some engaging solo play. Solo games I have been enjoying: Dungeon Drop, Elder Sign, and Friday. I feel your frustration in finding Shakespeare's dark lady. I suffer similarly when playing Mind MGMT. Your sense of humor is refreshing. Thank you for making this video!
That was hilarious the way you moved meeples and threw around components 😂. Normally I'm a stickler for handling board games but your way looks so much more fun!
For me it also was the first time I saw you, and it was time spent well. I like your style, and the games you presented are cool. A couple of them I have never heard of, but now I am very curious for them. I will check more vids from you. Cheers !
Great video. Love the pacing of it and descriptions with actual game images. I really like Hadrian's Wall and Cartographers Heroes. just bought Terraforming Mars and Robinson Crusoe. Can't wait to try them out!
Thanks, I try to keep the videos moving and close to 10 minutes. Anything over I usually get board. I just bought Cartographers and Have eyed Hadrian's Wall many a times at my FLGS.
Quite a nice list 🎉 Mage Knight, Under Falling Skies and Nemo’s War would have been nice fits as well. And I’m not even mentioning Too Many Bones, Hoplomachus Victorum, Anachrony, Carnegie, Star Wars: Outer Rim, Aeon’s End… So many great solo games out there…
I have Mage Knight but it feels like the love child of Christopher Nolan films and David Lynch films. Sure they are great but most of the time give me Ice Pirates.
@@SortOfBoardGamesthat’s the most out-of-left field yet accurate description of that game I’ve ever heard! Mage Knight is, objectively and undeniable, the “best” solo game I own, but when I sit down in front of a table, more often I just want to turn off my brain and roll through a couple floors of One Deck Dungeon.
this video showed up on my youtube homepage. you showcased all of the games pretty well. i dont play board games but i'd like to try most of them especially hostage negotiator
I love Hostage but it is one of the more brutal games I play. A lot of luck with roles and if you role bad... you're in for a bad time. Look for a used copy of the base game, a lot out there. Thanks for the view and I'm shocked I'm popping up on someone's home page.
"I need friends"... So many gamers and game reviewers can say this but don't! Excellent video, "of" games series is intriguing. I have Raiders "of: Scythia as well as Legacy "of" Yu, and my flgs is going to hold Ezra and Nehemiah for me. I just recently discovered this genere of games and am really looking forward to getting them off of my shelf of shame. Heavyish games in a small discrete boxes. Beautiful. Beatiful indeed.
Too many boxes make it so everything doesn't fit when cards are sleeved. Cards slide around and just the time to sleeve makes me not do it. Also sleeves and lights do not mix so when doing videos I don't want to shoot around glare. To each their own, I use to do it but for me, I don't mind wear on cards.
Great list! Your way of presenting and humor is super fun. I was quite surprised to find games in your list that I haven't heard of before, so it is time to give them a look. A game from a smaller publisher I can highlight is Astroforce: The dice game. Has its edges, still like it. I also find that many cooperative games work well solo, Tokyo Sidekick is a fun one. Can't disagree that engine building makes for some of the best games. Terraforming Mars I only played multiplayer so far. Might try solo, but was worried it could be lame losing on the map interaction and having some cards become useless. Also I like you :)
Playing Terraforming Mars solo is a completely different playing style. You don't want cards that are just VP. You need to just use cards that increase the engine or put things on the map. Yeah a bunch of cards are either useless or more end game but for me it adds an element of searching to get what you need.
Good review, and thanks for the time stamps. It’s a big disappointment to open a “Top Games” review video and find no time stamps. There are some game genres I don’t like, and I just don’t have the patience to wade through those reviews. Thanks again, and cheers.
First time seeing you. Fantastic video! Great presentation. You are liked and earned yourself a sub. I also play 99% solo and it nice to find others that do the same. Perhaps a review of best digital board games (with analogue equivalents) would be nice.
Architects was also one of my favorite solo games, However Paladins replaced it for me. Rules are a little more complicated but once I got it down it was super fun.
Since you enjoy Hostage Negotiator and don’t mind killing whales (hahaha! ) have you checked out Final Girl. I am a solo gamer as well (my game group still thinks Uno is fantastic) and it is one of my favorites along with Too Many Bones, Warp’s Edge, and Mage Knight. Great video and you are not alone......except when you are. 😂
Not a fan of horror but every day I'm kicking myself a little bit more for not backing it. I have Warp's Edge and it just fell out of favor. May need to bring it back out. I want Too Many Bones but the price is a little high and my tendency to be a completist makes me constantly put it on the back burner. Finally I do have Mage Knight... sitting at a friends house. It's a board game that... way too much. I've made comments in this video about Mage Knight. I may have to do a video just on my thoughts about it.
@@SortOfBoardGames I understand about Too Many Bones- it is a lifestyle game, but when you see the quality of components- we are worth it! If you like tactical games, Hoplomachus Victorum is a one time spend for a very replayable solo only game. And it looks fantastic on the table.
I've watched videos of Danielle Strandring playing Too Many Bones and I get the urge to empty out my kids non existing college fund. @@bryanscollick8305
I wasn't playing a real game just trying to get video simulating a game. Some of the placement was used to get a little extra sound from it hitting the board. Also the game fills most of the table and I had to hand hold the camera for some shots so it was a little awkward getting tiles and playing in general... or maybe I do this always...
Which Wingspan expansions do you play solo? Your video makes me want to try that game solo. My favorite solo game is Arkham Horror the Card Game. It can be punishingly hard, but it has a lot of fail-forward moments that really make for great stories. My underrated solo game is The Grizzled (with At Your Orders expansion). It’s a fun push-your luck game with a somber theme. It makes the game table every year for Armistice/Veterans Day.
I've got it set up for Base and European. I want to add Oceanic but I need to teach my family the added rules and haven't done it yet. I keep Asia also separate and you can just play that alone with the new extra board. Prior to the Nesting Box Asia was the easiest way to get a game set up.

I had a banged up used copy of Friday. I may need to add it back to the collection. I wonder if the condition made me not want to play it as much.
Ummm... Was that intro part supposed to be hilarious? Because it was.
This is equal parts hilarious and informative. Thank you!
That was hilarious the way you moved meeples and threw around components 😂. Normally I'm a stickler for handling board games but your way looks so much more fun!
I'm not that rough while playing but for videos, you get a little more pop of audio and it looks better.

A pleasant camera perspective so close to components.
Thank you. I’ve been shooting video for over 20 years in local news. I’ve learned right shots with wide shots give a better perspective for the eye.
I whole heartedly endorse/agree with Fleet the dice game as a solo game. It’s addicting and the theme actually comes through.
I just need the smell of salt water along with a bout of vertigo and it's like I'm out to sea.

You are loved! The West Kingdom Games all have great solo modes. Circadians First Light is great as well.
I have not heard of Circadians First Light (Opens BGG to scope it out).
Maracaibo is such a fantastic game

I have similar thoughts about Ark Nova. The one aspect that frustrates me in solo play is the staleness of the card river.
Ugh, I've had games where nothing was coming up that I needed.
Final Girl by Van Ryder (of Hostage Negotiator fame) is my current favorite, but you gave me more great things to buy! Great video!
I'm not a fan of Horror but I do want to try Final Girl.
@@SortOfBoardGames im the same but it really is fun and similar mechanics as hostage Negotiator. I definitely lose more than I win!!
OMG the very end 😆🤣😂
Just started adding those as a kind of post credit scene. A little something something for those that stay... or just zip to the end.
I like Hostage, but Final Girl is even better.
Areas Expedition is also very good, and a little quicker than TM.
I didn't want two TM games on the list but it could be at 9 or 10. While injured it was on the table while working from home.

My top 2 sologames are 1 Nemesis and 2 This War of Mine. Followed by On Mars and Perseverance ep. 1
Nice video. Maracaibo is a great game.
Have you tried Welcome to the moon (flip and write) and Dune Imperium? Those 2 are nice solo games
Welcome to the Moon is on the shelf of shame. I've played Dune: Imperium with my group but not solo.
Architects was also one of my favorite solo games, However Paladins replaced it for me. Rules are a little more complicated but once I got it down it was super fun.
I have only played Paladins of the west kingdom games and it's one of my favorite games of all time.
According to my logs I've played Paladins once and I don't remember it. Might be a holiday buy for me.
