  • This is a Sunrise Beach on Koh Lipe tour in 2024. Ko Lipe is an island in Satun Thailand and considered a great destination for island hopping. Nearby Malaysia you can get ferries to Thailand and Malaysia here. I walk from Sunrise Beach towards Sunset Beach at sunset time in July.

@@IHTVBEACHES that's crazy! As you were describing it as it happened I kept thinking to myself "Put down the cam and get in the water! Get in the water!"

Hi, your idea of a sunomi is a little off. Mostly Hollywoods fault for showing a giant wave hitting.
The 2004 Sunomi was caused by a massive earthquake about 1,500 miles away from Thailand and extremely deep in the ocean. We didn't feel a thing or have any warning at all! Also it's not a giant wave, it's a tidal surge that is tremendously speeded up, one minute it's up to your knees, another upto your waist, another all of a sudden there's 14 feet of water over your head!
You can't believe the power of it, I saw it bend steel, break concrete, pick up a two decker tourist bus like a potatoe chip and carry a 70 foot fishing trawler a half mile inland and then dump it on top of a couple of palm trees and some cars.
I was standing on the beach on Dec 26th 10.30 am at Patong beach, Phuket, just finished my morning walk. Was living there the previous 8 months or so.
This will make you laugh, the one thing that saved my life?
I had been a boat owner in Marina Del Rey, California and a member of the auxiliary coast guard, u had to take classes to get qualified. Anyway they taught 1 gallon of sea water weighs 8.8 lbs.
When I saw the entire bay empty out and a white crest line across the horizon for some reason I thought we'll that's got to be millions of gallons of water multiple by 8.8 I started running towards my hotel to get to the 3rd floor. Never thought tidal wave or sunomi, that was the first in 500 years.
I believe the final count was around 500,000 to 600,000 dead in 8 countries. As u saw a LOT of bodies washed out to sea and never recovered. I plan on moving back the end of this year retired and I figure if God wants me, well he already has let me go a few times in my life.....
Thanks for the video and your service.

Yes you are correct it is more of a tidal surge. I mostly know of the waves that hit Banda Aceh and Phuket. I call them waves. But really they are more like ripples in the ocean at larger magnitudes. But yes what you said is correct. I call them large waves because most layman don’t know what a tidal surge is but they do know what big waves are
