  • So i'm nearing the end of the core ECW project i've been workingon this year and i made the mistake of researching what i was going to work on next. One thing led to another and i've basically started. So this is just an overview of the project, what it's going to be, and what i hope to achieve by the end of it plus a look at the first unit completed.

    Can't wait to see Victrix release the Norman cavalry, hopefully archers/crossbowmen. The Anglo-Dane huscarls would make great Varangian guard

    Okay I was blown away at the unit reveal. You're getting really talented at this! The unit looks like the effort put into a commander base diorama. The whole division will look insane 😍

    I literally went out to the internet to see if I could find that T-Shirt. And then I said, well maybe he has a link to get that shirt. And you do. I also found another T-Shirt I like, but I think I'll get both.
    About the content - When I was about 16, in the 10th grade in the USA, I found out about the Crusades and checked many books out of the library about the armor worn, and about the Crusades, especially the First Crusade. I always "liked" Tancred and Godfrey de Bouillon. For a kid with no money, the library was a Godsend for me. I'll end up watching all of these videos.

    I am glad I found this having followed much of your Napoleonics. Having a fascination for crusades, I have been thinking about this period war games. The problem is always understanding how to play, although having learned quite a lot of the napoleonic rules...all thanks to your and other YT help ... it won,t be such a learning curve. It would be great play a game with someone though.
    Thank you such detail.

    Looks great - Norman conquest through first crusade was my first real army project with 25mm Ral Partha figures. Lots of overlap in using figures as the best equipped knights from one war can be the sergeants and men at arms in the next.

    This project is very near and dear to me. The Crusades have long been a period I love, but also one that I've had a variety of plans to wargame. I've got Outremer for skirmish battles that I am working towards, but I've also got Deus Vult that I've been struggling to figure out how to do: 6mm, 10mm, 28mm? I'd love to chat with you about Deus Vult, as I've had the rules since they were released and I'm inching closer to making it happen. Looking at these figures, 28mm would be visually stunning, but I think I'm going to go with 6mm as was my original plan.
    Long story short, this project is AWESOME and I look forward to following it and having it inspire my own Crusades projects!

    @tims8326 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great to hear you're doing 1st crusade rather than the 'glamorous' later ones. I did this project in 15mm a few months ago. My inspiration was the pilgrims. I know they were completely useless and if anything, got in the way, but there were a lot of them and I love the idea of 3/4 starved religious zealots giving it 20% mad impetuous charge or 80% rout. To help this I also gave them a caroccio (spelling?) sacred altar and banner in a wagon (I know they didnt have one :P but the period is exactly right so they *could* have had one) as well as plentiful praying monks mixed into the very large and disorganised bases. Talking of ragged starving masses, the main army was little better by the time they arrived in the levant, so I made my footsoldiers considerably less well armed and armoured than you have done. I think your WoTR style super tanky foot units is inappropriate and as far as I recall, the footsoldiers actually did very little, the knights charging off (unsupported) as they usually did with all their arrogance, and usually succeeding in blasting straight through the Syrian forces (Seljuqs & Fatamids were a little later, I think) by virtue of this being a totally new tactic/style to the Syrians. I read somewhere that the ideal age for a Fatamid or similar levantine heavy cavalryman was considered about 30, so to have acquired lots of skills and judgement, whereas for a Norman/crusader it was 18 - all zealousness and arrogance of youth. Which brings me back to appropriateness of my hypothetical carrocio.
    So since you have a large quantity of intermingleable parts, I'd look at getting a plastic kit of basic saxons or some similar raggedy arsed foot and make the bulk of your foot much less impressive, mixing heads bodies and weapons. The knights themselves were not impervious to the general poverty of the expedition, so a proportion of those should also be only partly armoured and indifferently weaponed. Byzantine 'assistance' was also spectacularly modest, maybe a few Armenian light troops - no more. They seemed to pick up Turcopoles quickly (again, Armenian in the early days), so these might be a fun, but absolutely no coordination with the knights should be allowed...... 'where are they going?'

    • @7thson726
      @7thson726  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats really cool, there is certainly alot of scope and opportunity in this period. Did you just do the western armies or did you go for more?
      Thats given me alot of food for thought, i had considered adding in Saxon bodies for variation. I certainly think the peoples crusafe and the knights /soldiers whonwere with that were unprepared but i feel that given the crusade had a preparation time and there were quite a few staging posts along the way they were well supplied. Especially once the ports had been captured and Alexios could send men.
      I know that by the time they left Antioch there was only about 200-300 cavarly left so the majority of the force was on foot however they had been significantly resupplied by the Byzantines after they left the seige. They also spent months in antoich preparing to leave on the next stage of the crusade, the Gesta Francorum talks about the armoured units of the Normans / Franks not mixing with the pilgrims and in fact forcing them to keep seperate, although Bohemond seems to have gone to great lengths to protect them adopting multiple shield walls around them in various battles. The main point of starvation appears to have been in the siege of Antioch itself but they still fought off multiple relief armies and once they took the city. They really were on the edge 🤔
      The Frankish cavalry was certainly supported by Turcapoles and Armenian troops amd as you say was a tried and tested tactic though i would add that while some of these crusaders were young Zealots alot of the Normans were veteran soldiers and those in the companies of Bohemond and Tancred had already fought in campaigns in the areas of the northern parts of the Seljuk and Byzantine empire. The Seljuks were definitely the power in the northern part of the region at the time, they came into power in the 1030's and were campaigning against the Fatamids in 1097/98 when the crusade entered their territory hence the rush back to confront them.
      Love the idea of the carrocio i was looking at the Perry one for a while. I will be doing pilgrims but within their own division, will probably chuck Peter the Hermit in there for good measure.
      Thanks for taking rhe time to comment, certainly given me some bits to think about 👍😁

      @@7thson726 Amazing how we read the same sources and draw different points of emphasis. I think that's what I enjoy about these slightly more obscure (in wargaming terms) periods, there is no specific right answer, no specific 'correct' way to play. One thing that did occur to me in bed while reflecting on what I'd said (yes I know - sad but ..... shrugs) was that as so many knights did lose (eat?) their horses that there would surely have been a small number of well armed and aggressive foot units, as I think it unlikely that they would have lowered themselves to mixing with the common soldiery.
      I do have a muslim army as well, theoretically Syrian, although mixing in figures from every army/manufacturer I could match up (15mm is a terrible scale for scale consistency) so its a bit of a soup. I have vague plans to expand this into more distinctive Syrian/Seljuq/ Fatamid (or maybe Abbasid) armies though I am struggling on how to achieve this distinctiveness. civil wars are all very well and historically appropriate, but I do like distinctiveness between forces. (For instance my WoTR Yorkists have a lot of Burgundian mercenaries, Lancastrians none, while the Lancastrians have a lot of shire levy, Yorkists none).

    Lovely figures, I was going to do a Norman army but you convinced me to do a war of the roses one instead! Maybe something for the future, although something mongul or ottoman or maybe ww2 would be nice, I cannot wait to see this project materialise (would any of the siege walls be compatible with your WotR campaign or are they just going to be completely separate?)
    Edit: I also love the simple nature of the bases, they act as a beautiful not too showy display for the miniatures, the two work so well together instead of competing for attention.
