All appliance cover is a scam- even the legitimate policies sold in store. I cannot understand why people insure appliances. If you buy cover for every major appliance in your home, you will easily spend the equivalent replacement cost of at least one of them every year. How often do major appliances fail? Less frequently than people imagine! So take the hit once every few years when one needs replacement but in the meantime save hundreds every year not insuring them.

That was so entertaining! Reality is even genuine warranties can be a rip-off, buy a decent brand and it'll be a long time before it breaks. My mum's Bosch one failed for the first time recently after 21 years of reliable service.

Retailers have their own version. When they sell you something electrical they try to sell you an extended warranty costing maybe fifty pounds a year effective after the original one expires after a year. But it's all baloney. The sale of goods act states such goods are guaranteed by the seller for six years anyway. Shop assistants don't seem to know this.

I like to play games with these sort of people. For instance, I sometimes get a call to tell me “I understand you’ve been involved in a road traffic accident sir”. I can really string these along. I usually start by say “Yes, you’re right. How did you know? “ Then they usually go on to say it wasn’t my fault. Then I say “Where did this happen? My mind is still a bit muddled “ At this point they have to start trying to sound plausible. What car were you driving sir? Oh, I was my patrol car and someone pulled out in front of me. And being a police officer I thought I’d better report it to my superior. I can usually sense by this time, they think I might be winding them up and generally hang up. It’s good fun though. Just like your efforts Richard.

Last time I had a 'road traffic accident' call (several years ago), I must have spoken to the very nice gentleman for at least 20 minutes - half hour. I told him on 3 separate occasions that my head was decapitated in the accident. Eventually, after he discussed this with his senior supervisor, the call was cut off. I never heard from them again. Strange.

He I’m 63 and over the years have owned many white goods . I have never insured any of them at any time.
I have never had an appliance break down . I have always replaced them because I want to update them. I went to Curry’s a few years back and wanted to purchase a 60 inch Tv, cost was 2000 quid, at the checkout if the assistant asked me to take out extended warranty once, she asked me 15 times. In the end I told her if you don’t take my payment within the next 20 seconds I’ll walk away.
    She took the payment.

I worked for a couple of retailers in the 80’s and 90’s when the extended warranty scam was first starting. It was well known in the industry that high street retailers made little or no margin on selling electronic items - however, by selling an extended warranty they would receive a generous commission from the insurer, and thereby increase their profit margin. The warranties were so profitable that companies paid a cash bonus to staff for each one sold - hence pushy sales staff. I’ve never purchased a warranty in my life - but if I ever wanted to buy one, it’s better to contact your own insurance company direct, to get a much better deal and without paying kick backs and commission to retailers. Sorry, bit of a rant!

many years ago my partner bought a PC on credit from currys. As students we couldn't afford to buy outright. Many months later we realised two payments were being deducted each month, one for the computer and one for insurance. Our contract made no mention. After a protracted battle currys finally admitted a staff member had opted us in for the insurance without our consent- their carbon copy of the contract showed a tick in the option box, while our original top copy didn't. We wonder how many people this happened to but who never realised. Now, fortunately we don't have to use credit and are a bit more grown up so keep a closer eye on our bank statements!

I have had a few of these types of calls recently. All slightly different but they eventually get to the point of saying that they can set up a direct debit for the payment of £179.99 for one year. I said I could set up the direct debit myself if I wanted the service but they insisted that only they could set it up if I just gave them the relevant card details (of course I am really going to do that so that they can steal each and every penny that I have). So I just declined the offer saying I wasn't interested and they cut the call straight away as they realized they were not going to get any card details from me.

Just as I was going to push the end call button I realised that the tone was slightly off so I spoke again. He comes back online and I realised he could not end the call. He had to endure another 20 minutes of piss taking - me asking him to hold whilst 'singing' Greensleeves, telling him all about the Chinese rail system, talking about different headsets whilst constantly reminding him that he had no choice but to listen. They have a wonderful extended warranty - often free if you spend enough on a TV.
If you need to buy the extended warranty it costs 10% of the purchase price of your equipment. It lasts five years and I've had a couple of bits of equipment either repaired or replaced with new - no quibbles. Also, if when the 5th anniversary date comes round, you haven't used your warranty, then you can claim back the money you spent on it.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just put some money in a separate account (the amount you'd pay each month/year for extended warranty), and then if your electrical items breaks down (after x amount of years), you've more likely got enough money to buy a new one. Fridge freezers etc also come with an activation code which can cover for labour and parts if anything happens in the short term at no extra cost.

Reatail salespeople in New Zealand ALWAYS try to sell you an 'extended warranty' on major appliances, when every such appliance is warrantied, by law, that the appliance must operate as promised or be repaired or replaced. Lots of customers sign up for this, which goes straight into the salespersons pocket as an incentive to sell firstly, and as a bonus to their salary.

Now when the call just started they gave their name as Star Insurance, when I said I already have cover with domestic and general they tried to convince me that they were acting on their behalf. I've been with D & G for the last twenty years and know they would write to me if they were handing my account to another company.
They really think I'm that stupid.

I get these. I've had my machine for 12 years. The money I've not spent on warranties will more than pay for a new one should I need one. That's a good warranty if you can buy a warranty for a machine that's already broken - go on mate, keep going. She doesn't know much, has to pass to her supervisor. Why do these people (obviously Indians) think we believe them?

The giveaway that it's a scam is when he says 'Labourers' this term isn't used in the UK industry, it would be 'Technicians'. Even if its a genuine company using foreign call centres, they would be using a script using British terms.....I do not know why people fall for it although I'm sure the ones who do fall for it must be vulnerable such as elderly people suffering from dementia or someone with learning difficulties which makes this scam even more cruel

Best thing to do if you get a call from any number you don't know let it ring out then block the number you can also Google the number and it will take you to sites where you can check and find exactly where the number has rung from and also if it has been reported before as a scam

Under the Sale of Goods Act you have a 7 year warranty on ALL electrical goods,so even the manufacturer's warranty is a complete sham.

6 years is the limit for enforcing financial agreements so a buyer would not be able to take a seller to court after that.

I had this one quite a few years ago before I was aware of them, it sounded like a good deal so I daftly went for it (they weren't Indian), however I found out they were scams shortly after and instantly cancelled my debit card, they rang back saying my card had been declined and wanted a new number or else I had to pay them £85 for terminating the agreement. I told them to get stuffed, they'd have to take me to court....of course they never did!!! I guess I was lucky, they only got £16 out of me. I've never fallen for any scams since so it was a relatively cheap lesson.

Oooh, how unfortunate your t.v. fell off the wall just before you insured it.
They try it on when you buy a new electrical product in the shop and ask if you want an extended warranty for only X pounds. I have always asked, "Why, will it fail as soon as it's normal guarantee runs out? Is the product no good?"
My cooker still going strong and I bought it when married and I've been divorced 21 years now. I'd be paying money for an extended warranty for nothing. By now with the money I saved I could buy a new one. Like the washing machine broke last year and I bought that when married as well. On my previous cooker I replaced a switch for a cheaper price than an extended warranty, the connectors simply push on to the switch, the cooker carried on several more years until two rings failed and I thought a new one was needed..

Thankfully company's do not seem willing to put in the time to do that. Our new to us Bosch cost us £75 so is a bargain to £99. It is superb. Love David and Lily.
