You've Had an Accident SCAM! Avoid the scammers

  • Don't get fooled. If someone calls you to say that you have had a road traffic accident. Don't believe them. If they say they are from a FeedBack Service - beware!
They called me - and I recorded the conversation. I then called the people they said had given them my name and found out they hadn't at all. It was a SCAM! They were phishing!

Yes the confidentiality is in YOUR favour not the person on the other line and you can break your confidentiality at any stage if you choose. It's a common tactic used in scams where they really don't have any info, but unfortunately, gullible/elderly/scammable people tend to believe it.

I always tell them I’ve had 3 accidents in the time period and ask what one they are referring to. When they quote DPA I ask where the accident they’re ringing about took place. They can’t tell me. Ok when did it take place and again they can’t tell me. We then discuss how I can help them if they can’t clarify which one of the 3 accidents they’re ringing up about. I keep the call going till either they or I get bored.

Common sense would wipe that laugh off your face.
The data protection bit is proof that this is not a scam.
      Here is the scam:
They purchase a list of names who have recently had an accident. (some times as can be heard the list is incorrect).
They then go through the accident to see if a possible claim could be had for that individual. If they think so they then pass on the details to a solicitor who gets in touch with the person who had the accident and on their behalf set about getting them a nice big juicy payout that they did not realise they could get. The call centre gets a commission from the solicitor.
No scam. Just an over-imaginative TH-camr making a false video to get advertising revenue - now there is a scam!

What happened? Well, I was in the back seat with Vera.
      Is Vera your wife? No.
Whose Vera? Well to be delicate about it, she is the mistress.
What happened? Well, it's really bad. The condom broke, Vera is pregnant and worst of all, the wife has found out and is now divorcing me.

    "Can you describe the accident?"
"Certainly. We were driving down the motorway and there was this enormous logging truck in front of us. It started speeding and one of the straps holding the logs down snapped and they began careening off the back. We veered into the next lane in time, but the person behind us unfortunately wasn't as lucky and got impaled by a falling log. Long story short, there was a huge multicar pile up caused by this logging truck, made worse by the fact a fuel truck was involved and when it hit the logging truck it exploded and killed almost everyone in the area.
Ah wait, that's the start of Final Destination 2. My bad. "

  • @RichardHubbuck

The story behind these calls is that they are ambulance chasers, who have a list of basic details from the Motor Insurance Bureau regarding MINOR traffic collisions/insurance claims. I had insurance with Tesco and found out they SOLD the basic information of the crash (so probably thousands of incidents nationwide), which includes name, contact telephone number and the fact that the incident involved a non-fault claim. They do not have any more info and will go on a fishing trip to glean the other information, so that they (essentially hooky solicitors) can lodge an injury claim against the other party (at fault). Whilst this type of call is not, in fact, a scam, in all honesty, you will probably be successful with a claim. HOWEVER, and this is the big 'however', they will most likely lodge - and win - a claim for whiplash or back pain because these are injuries that take a few days to present signs and symptoms. And the reason for them chasing you? Well, in most cases, incidents are reported to insurance companies within an hour or two - and one of the questions asked is "are there any injuries to any party?". Unless an injury is present and obvious, then the question is replied in the negative; whiplash injuries can take several days to manifest, but by this time, the paperwork for the claim is well underway - and being a minor incident, the details are pretty much straight forward. Cars are fixed, but [you] have that niggling pain in your neck, that you just live with (whiplash!) Fast forward to the ambulance chaser phone call (usually 4 -6 months later), and if you are lured by their charms, you will probably find yourself explaining the pain in your neck that you had developed a few days after reporting the incident, but which also lasted for about 3 months. And THIS is where they will fight your battle to win compensation, and in all likelihood, win. But, the issue comes to receiving your compo payout... ...The ambulance chaser 'fee' can be up to 50% of your winnings. So, the next time you hear 'no win, no fee' don't be surprised that you are not being represented by a QC in a major trial. And for this reason, insurance companies have stopped (in most cases) accepting claims of compensation for whiplash.

If you have had an accident, they call you about 5-10 times a day, wanting you to claim, they even had the cheek to ask to speak to my wife (the driver at the time) and try to bypass me. They said they could get £2,900 per passenger. Just scammers.

What EVERYONE needs to do is pick up their computers and register with the TPS. Telephone preference Service. What you then do is when you get one of these SCAMMERS CALIING you ask, " How did you obtain my number"? Remember folks, in the UK at least, you have some protection against NUISANCE callers. You tell the caller "This is a nuisance call" if unsolicited. The only way you'll get a call is more than likely from OUTSIDE the UK. It will then be Michael from India calling you, More than likely. 🤔🤣

How do they actually steal your money if all they do is refer you to a named Solicitor's firm that might help if you were involed in a real accident and perhaps could be entitled to some sort of compensation?
Also the Solicitor's named would obviously be in cahoots with these cold callers.
I have had dozens of these calls and just immediately hang up.
