Marine biologist here, I'm a bit late but I live and work in Hawaii so I work with a lot of the species you saw! The seal is a Hawaiian monk seal, they are protected so you shouldn't get close to them. Most of the seals in the islands have names and are routinely monitored by NOAA and the Hawaii Marine Animal Response, which I used to work for. The green sea turtles are also protected, and they like to haul out onto the beach and bask in the sun. The first urchin you picked up is called echinometra mathaei, or the burrowing urchin. As their name suggests, they burrow deep into the rocks, which is why they're so hard to pick up. The second urchin you grabbed is colobocentrotus atratus, or the helmet/shingle urchin. Their eggs are eaten as sushi! You were right about Acanthurus triostegus, the baby convict tang. The sergeant you caught is a blackspot damselfish, also called kupipi in Hawaiian. The sea cucumber you grabbed while diving is an actinopyga varians, or the pacific white-spotted cucumber. The gobies hopping between tide pools are called zebra blennies, scientific name istiblennius zebra, and they're endemic to Hawaii. The crab you netted is grapsus tenuicrustatus, and you can often see hundreds of these guys crawling on the rocks on the east side of Oahu at sunset. The next sea cucumber you grabbed is holothuria atra, which are poisonous but can also be eaten or used for medicine if prepared properly. You got some cool catches! Hope you enjoyed the islands!
Hey! Would you mind if I were to ask you a couple questions? I am currently a college student and I have always wanted to become a Marine Biologist. I would absolutely love to be able to clear up some of the questions I had regarding this career path.
Hey Paul just want to let you and Brenton know that the monk seal and the turtles are protected heavily here and it’s illegal to touch and frowned upon to get super close to them. Otherwise Great video! 🤙🏼
Paul, go snorkeling at Hunama Bay. It's a protected park no nets. If it's still the same, you can see thousands of fish, both inside and outside the reef. Just be careful of strong currents outside of the reef. We used to feed the fish, bread, and peas. Double check if that's still allowed.
baby fish is called a manini in hawaiian, and the Sargent majors are called mamo. the one that jumped out the tidepool is a rockskipper, that crab is a a'ama crab or a black rock crab, and the one with the spot on its tail is called a kupipi.(I don't know what the english names are). the seal is called a hawaiian monk seal. Thanks for coming to Hawaii and letting the world know of Hawaii's beautiful ocean ecosystems!
Hey Paul 👋 I just want to let you know that those fish with the black spot were called “Blackspot Sergeant”. Similar to Sergeant Majors. Blackspot Sergeant are probably the most common fish in Hawaii 👍👍
Hey Paul, loved this video. The seal was aewsome and no doubt it went back into the water to feed. Looks like You and Brenten are having a great time, especially in Walmart and the cool fishing gear they sell there. Thank You, as always Paul, for sharing, shout out to Brenten & Jaquan, and stay safe.
Hey Paul, The Hawaiian monk seal is an endangered species. It is illegal to touch them and must keep a distance of 50ft away from them. Also the Convict Tang is also known as “Manini” in Hawaii. The Sergeant Major is called a “Kupipi”. Also are you doing any meet and greets in Hawaii?
Paul thank you for being one of my favorite TH-camrs. Your content is always amazing. Also welcome to my home and I hope you loved being surrounded by all this nature!
Another great video, Paul. I’m glad Brenten could join you here in Hawai’i. I love seeing your collaboration videos. I can just imagine what you two could come up with in Hawai’i. I hope you are (or did) enjoy your time here. Thank you again for showcasing our island(s).
hey paul, just wanted you to know that turtles only appear on beaches when they are breeding or when they hatch out of eggs, so be really careful not to step on any eggs if walking on sand. turtles sleep underwater :)
The excitement of us celebrating the goat at the end!! As always your awesome and thankyou my son feels so special and is over the moon!! Ordering his new shirt of yours for Christmas and so excited for another huge reaction! Been watching since 2018 and the happiness you bring my children I appreciate so much!! Keep up the awesome hard work,we love it!😊
just a heads up: you can’t touch turtles or seals and you aren’t supposed to get close to them when they are resting on land, normally when authorities find out they will block of the area
Paul is so amazing at what he does for us with the videos he makes never fails to keep me entertained and definitely made me start my own predatory pond with redtails and hybrid redtails and other predatory fish i want to get a fly river so bad that next on my fish list to get and the 1st thing I'm getting before anything else
hello, I would still like you warn you that you should always stay 200 feet from Hawaiian turtles. They are very sacred species plus the seals are illegal to touch or they just shouldn’t be touched. The crab you caught was knowed as the a’ama crab!! GREAT VIDEO THOUGH, MAHALO 🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾
In Hawaii I'd stay away from beaches that don't have locals. You didn't find a secret spot. There's good reason nobody swims there. The currents are probably super dangerous
Paul this video was an epic one after seeing all those turtles , that Seal and everything else . Amazing what you can find when your out minding your business and bumping into that Seal and turtles. Thanks for sharing 💯👍
Great video but I'd caution you to keep your distance from the seals and the honu. They are protected species and harassing them or getting too close could get you quite a hefty fine. The distance is 10 feet
Here in hawaii your supposed to be 20 feet away from the monk seals and turtles. And this is not just meant for him but for everyone who comes to visit hawaii. Us locals respect our visiters and spread aloha to everyone. Please respect the animals,Aina and the people that live here! Im a local myself. Mahalo for all the visiters that have respected hawaii🤙 Alohaa
