I’m a makeup artist. I only use bar soaps to clean my makeup tools. First, i will wet my bar soap and makeup sponge and brushes then swirl them around on top of the bar soap and rinse and repeat few times (depends on how dirty your brushes or sponge are). For sponge, you need to swirl then squeeze gently under water and repeat until it’s clean. If you want to be extra clean, just cut the bar soap into small size like hotel bar soap size, clean everything and throw the used small bar soap after. That way, you’ll have left over of the clean bar soap that don’t get contaminated with bacteria. You can use anti bacterial bar soap or baby bar soap. Sorry for my bad english. I hope you guys understand what i’m saying.
im so glad i read the comments before trying it, I almost just went for it but then i was worried that the vinegar would make them smell so i went back and checked to see what other people thought and I'm glad i did
So ... when I followed your instructions, I saw a comment saying someone’s brushes got ruined .. I immediately took them out , and just cleaned them with baby shampoo, luckily all my brushes were saved except for one which was immediately ruined ... thank-you comments I don’t know what I would do without you all I almost killed my brushes , now I know to read before I actually do it .
Just put hot water and dish soap in a glass and swirl them around for like 15 seconds. Vinager is an acid and will eat the glue that holds the brushes together. And they shouldn't be submerged in water for 20 minutes either
Priscilla Ruiz use warm water and bodywash or shampoo, let the brushes sit for about 10 min and rinse while swirling on your hand or a special brush mat
Literally just did EXACTLY what she said, sat down on the toilet and read the comments to immediately jumping up to take my brushes out of the cup💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
DO NOT USE VINEGAR LADIES.. AND GENTS... it will destroy you glue and could ruin the finish on some brushes. I use Dawn dish soap or an oil based face cleanser. Never had to buy the fancy expensive brush soap and it works just fine with no damage done.
*I am a makeup artist myself and I've been cleaning brushes for over 5 years* all you need is a bowl of warm soapy water (prefer dawn dishsoap) or Dove body wash and let them sit in the warm soapy water for 10 mins then GENTLY do swirling motions on the palm of my hands while rinsing it will completely remove all dirt/bacteria/makeup then I grab a towel and gently pat then LET AIR DRY facing DOWN or laying down .. Never dry upward(bristels) will create mold from trapped water. 😇😇🙏
For who feel I'm hating on her trust me I'm 100% not, but for those who feel I am please take this video into any Sephora, or M.A.C. and see how any of the makeup artist react to the cleaning of the brushes, because trust me you don't let them soak, and you also do your best to not let the water go past the metal ferrule of the brush, because the ferrule has the glue in it that holds your bristles together and also helps connect the handle to the bristles it helps hold the entire brush together you do your best to not allow any water to get in there because it ruins the brushes whether it be natural or synthetic bristles you don't use alcohol or any other harsh substances on them that would dry them out it ruins your brush no matter how expensive or cheap you choose to buy. Trust me if you use this method one too many times especially on like let's say a Tom Ford brush that you will pay out pretty much $100 on for 1 brush you're going to end up quite upset that a very expensive brush is now ruined. And for anyone thinking I'm putting her down this just goes to show that someone who paid for their education and knows how to properly clean a brush and am try to help you, I'm not putting her down, I have not called her any bad names I am merely trying to help anyone who is wanting to learning how to clean their brushes that this is not a good method at all, so sorry if you choose to see this as im being mean im not. I'm trying to help save your brushes so sorry if you see this as bad
Margaret Dale Same here. I’ve been following this thread for several months and have been trying to warn people to please not use this method. Brushes are an investment, even some drugstore brushes can get pricey. My heart has been absolutely broken reading some of the comments here from those who tried this method and ruined their brushes. 💔💔 If I we’re a TH-camr and I made a video that caused damage to someone’s brush collection, I would be so ashamed and would immediately apologize and try to make things right. Then I would take the offending video down and make an apology video. On the flip side of the coin, we as subscribers also need to take caution when trying out something we see here. Although you don’t necessarily have to read the entire comments section, reading some of the replies can be helpful. For instance, in this video alone, commenters who have either taken art classes or who otherwise have knowledge about the care of makeup brushes responded immediately warning what would happen. If you do decide to try something you see on TH-cam, proceed with caution. Test it out on one or two things that are cheap and easily replaced, rather than going all out and trying it on your whole collection. If it’s a DIY “beauty hack,” exercise even more caution, or better yet, don’t try it if you have any doubts. Your health and safety isn’t worth risking for some too good to be true “beauty hack.” Watching beauty and makeup videos is fun and can be informative, and I’m sure making them is quite fun, too, but remember, as an influencer, you have a responsibility to your audience. There’s a wealth of information available on the internet, so please be sure and do your research before making a video. What may seem like a simple video on how to clean your brushes could end up getting you into some unintended trouble.
Melynda Moon Maybe she’s not a TH-camr. You don’t have to make videos to be knowledgeable in any subject. TH-cam beauty gurus may have a lot of knowledge and experience, but that doesn’t make them all-knowing. They’re people, and people make mistakes like the young lady who made this video (but is unfortunately not taking responsibility for her mistake). Several people here who are makeup artists, artists in general, or who have experience in taking care of makeup tools (who may or may not have their own channels) are trying to HELP here.
Recommend using some dove body wash or a bar of dove soap and if you use dove body wash rinse your brush put like a dot or too rub it on your hand rinse and keep doing that till it doesn’t look dirty and give it a good rinse if you use dove soap bar wet the brush rub it on the dove soap bar and rinse and reaper till they are clean and put them on a towel to dry
@@wonderpetz9005 your comment is so idiotic. It doesn't matter how expensive your brushes are, almost all make up brushes are glued to together at the base and this method of steeping the brushes in a harsh solution will strip the glue from the base no matter how expensive the brushes are. The brushes with very cheap glue will come apart right away, slightly stronger glues will come apart once they're dry and you're using them on your face. NEVER EVER steep brushes in a solution be it water or something stronger. Always wash them upright one by one, using a bristle mat helps a lot too, painfully annoying but only way to preserve the longevity of all brushes regardless of how expensive they are.
Olivia Martin The same thing happened to me😭 I tried this a long time ago and it wrecked my brushes, before all the comments warning against it were at the top. I only came back to show my mom the kind of jar I’m looking for.
All this time I clean my brush hot water + dish soap + olive oil. This will save your brush guys, most of makeup artist in my country using the same method. We don't use vinegar.
For everyone freaking out about the vinegar, you need to think of the properties of it and Dawn. Dawn dish soap is known for its grease-cutting abilities. They use it on wildlife that has been exposed to crude oil. White vinegar is a distilled acidic substance. It's primary purpose is for cleaning. There are different strengths - common and "for cleaning". The common one is also the one you mix with the colors for Easter eggs. The typical dilution is 50/50 with water. It is also used in good glass cleaner, as it doesn't streak. So, when you combine the vinegar and Dawn, you get a potent cleaner. In this video, she used 1 CUP of water to 1 TABLESPOON of vinegar. That is a 1:16 dilution. If that were apple cider vinegar, you could actually drink it at that ratio. As I said, the typical dilution is 1:1 water to vinegar. At this dilution, even without Dawn, it would be near impossible to ruin the brushes, unless you used the "for cleaning" strength. And it would take sitting virtually overnight fully immersed to do any damage to the glues. If the brushes are cheap, it MIGHT start affecting the glue, but not right away. She also only let them sit for 20 minutes. If there is concern, you can dump the solution and just put straight water in to stop the cleaning proces. Now, as to what each ingredient does: Dawn - cuts through the grease the the chemical makeup of what's on the brushes. Once that starts getting removed, the acidic quality of the vinegar kicks in and not only helps remove the smaller amounts of makeup, but actually does much of the cleaning of the bristles. The water, obviously dilutes the vinegar but also creates volume for both Dawn and the vinegar. In other words, STOP FREAKING OUT ABOUT USING VINEGAR. If you think you're going to harm your brushes, use 1 teaspoon vs 1 tablespoon. But it is a very good ingredient as a cleansing agent. If you want to test what I'm saying, take three glasses of water, each with one cup of water. In the first one, put two cups of distilled white vinegar (2:1 ratio). In the second, use one cup of vinegar (1:1 ratio). And in the third, use 1 tablespoon (1:16 ratio). Mix each well (use your finger or a spoon). Put two super cheap water color brushes in each glass - one with nothing on it and the other with dried and caked foundation or concealer. Check after one hour, four hours, 12 hours and then overnight. What's the result? With the 2:1 ratio, you shouldn't have very many bristles left. In the 1:1 ratio, you should see a decent cleaning, and some damage (remember, this is the common glass and countertop cleaning ratio). In the 1:16 ratio, you should only see two clean brushes. And if you want to see the potency of the vinegar on its own, put about 1/4 cup in a glass and then put one of the cheap water color brushes in it. You can almost watch the bristles disintegrate.
Also, if you can prop your brush handle up on a wall or something so the bristles are facing down it's better for drying so no additional water gets in the brush head and tears apart the glue holding the bristles in place 😘
And when you have it soaking you should never have the water up above the barrel... And you can just roll or fold a towel behind the brush handles to elevate them that way the bristles don't get messed up
Though this seems like a great method, consider your liquid to container size ratio. The liquid should NOT touch the ferrule of your brush at all, if possible, especially for an extended period of time. Inside is where the glue sits and holds thousands of bristles to form the makeup brush that you LOVE. Soaking this part will cause the glue to soften and breakdown. If your brush never or rarely has fallout, and you start to see it more often after washing your brushes like this- you've broken down some of the glue. Gently comb out any loose bristles then see if it's still useable, if it's not, then time for a replacement. Use a smaller container and only put a LITTLE liquid. Do your large and smaller brushes SEPARATELY. It'll be easier to gauge how much liquid you need to add or pour out so it's ONLY touching the bristles. I hope this helps! This is a great cleaning method IF DONE CORRECTLY....otherwise it'll ruin your brushes
Thank goodness for comment sections. I’m new to using makeup brushes and almost tried to kill my only set. From what I learned: 1) don’t use vinegar it’ll eat the glue, I just used a little dish soap 2) don’t soak them in hot water, especially not for 20 minutes the glue will melt. I swirled each brush gently in a glass with warm water and a squirt of dish soap, then put it under the faucet and gently swirled on my palm, squished it a little to get out excess water and put it on a towel. The brushes came out very clean for me, they looked new (and they are bright white). 3) do not under any circumstances dry them bristle side up, this will trap the water and the brush will get moldy. It’s best to dry them facing downward, though laying flat will do. I angled mine against a little fan and on top of a wash cloth to dry and they dried well. Please note: I was cleaning my eye makeup brushes and they are quite small. I’m not 100% how the drying method I used would work on larger makeup brushes. I believe that it’ll work but I’m not completely certain since I’ve never tested it. I hope this helps.
Geeze I read all the comments and good grief ... so much negativity. Listen, I "followed" the instructions (come on people!) and my brushes are beautifully clean. No need to even leave them in the solution for 20 minutes. Less than 5 minutes and they are beautiful. As they are drying I can see them fluffing up. Try it! It Works! No one should be letting their brushes sit in Any kind of solution for an hour. They should not be getting that dirty. Hygiene matters in all things. Thank you for the vid Kayleigh! You helped this sister out.
WARNING! In earlier comments people warn you not to try this method because they got their brushes ruined. I haven't tried this so I can't say for sure if it's true, but I think I don't want to test it and push my luck. Brushes cost so much that ruining them would be tragic. The soap bar or the brush egg method seems much safer!
Comments are super helpful! It was my first makeup brush set and I was ready to wash this, when I was just about to try this I looked at the comments and luckily I did, because my brushes would have been ruined!!! Comments save brushes lives lmao. I eventually just mixed a small amount of oil and dish soap and mixed just the bristles through it, the. I tilted the brushes downwards under cold water (so the glue didn’t disappear) and gently washed the mixture out of the bristles. I then got a towel (one side folded to lean them against) I faced the bristles downwards so the water wouldn’t run up the brush to the glue and let them dry over night. They were as good as new! They felt soft and were all white like they were originally!
I was watching this on my TV when I paused, went and got the ingredients, and set my brushes in the water for over an HOUR. I always look at the comments but this time I was in a rush to clean up and decided to trust it. Even though I thought using vinegar and dish soap to clean face brushes sounded weird. Thankfully nothing happened to my brushes, but I’m confused on why the creator still has this video up. Ironically it’s the first one that poos up after you search.
I use a cleanser spry that I use almost everyday with my brushes. Key word...almost. After 2-3 weeks maybe a month I'll wash them. I'm just lazy, but my beauty blender I wash every other use.

I used this method. I had to do it twice because my brushes were so dirty. Worked magically! I think it’s smart to use a little less vinegar if you’re nervous about ruining the bristles
Alright so she said to put your “Brush Routine” so here I go 1) Get your nasty brushes a rinse 2) Fill a solo cup with 1/4 water depending on the cup size 3) Put Facial toner and face wash/foam in the cup 4) One brush at a time spin those puppies around for 30 seconds 5) Rinse the soap off 6) Dry on a paper towel 7) Bam you are done
Emily M wait toner cleans brushes?? I have so a giant bottle of toner from mario badescu, and another giant one from pixi and then a mini one from pixi🤩🤩
I wash them as I always have. Dish soap and olive oil :) I remember you used to wash them like that. Always have those two in the kitchen so its cheaper and it works. Never ruined any of my brushes. The higher end and the cheaper ones :))
I dont but you can. I usually mix dish soap and a little olive oil in a little bowl and dip the brushes lightly in it and rub it gently against my hand under running water.
Kaila Mondd Yes same. I already have the pretty brushes though. I got a glass jar filled it with shells and sand. and put my mermaid brushes from amazon! :)
Ai A In art class we were taught to clean paint brushes used for oil painting with olive oil and dish soap, breaks down any stubborn residue and conditions the bristles at the same time to make them last longer, don’t use hot water or it will dislodge the glue over time causing shedding or for the brush head to fall off completely (learned this the hard way RIP Chanel kabuki brush) But I’ve done this for years and my brushes are still like new I also dry them facing down on a clean towel, by rolling one end of the towel to create a slope for them to rest up against so the water drained properly, never put them back upright while they’re still wet/damp
The quality of the brushes depends on if they fall out. But if you're going to still use her method don't have the water go past up the barrel of the brush. Typically just below. Or get a sponge put some dish soap on it and rub your bristles on the sponge and then rinse it clean holding the bristles downward, blot it dry and let it out to sit on an angle on a towel or paper towels.. so the water will run out of the barrel if there's any in it. Good luck... The second way is how I clean cheaper brushes
Yeah it's better to just put it in something shallow or dip and brush it around your hands. The part the brushes are stuck to isn't supposed to get wet for that reason
Rainn I’ve noticed coconut oil cleans mine well, so I’m curious if that could be a substitute for olive or vinegar. But I’ve never submerged them like this in a jar. Just used the standard brush cleaner egg shaped tool.
You should a brush egg which is like the sigma mat but small and works better in my opinion ☺️ it's only $1 from websites like eBay, amazon, or the wish app. Its amazing I've had mine for 2 years and it still looks brand new !!
It’ll seep into ferrule, for sure. Do not follow this advice. When studying to be a MUA, they specifically told us to NEVER soak your brushes. Please don’t follow this.
Casually puts magical unicorn horn brushes in front of me and doesn't mention a thing about them! Such torture 😱 Any details about them or how you like them??
Kayleigh Noelle I just finished trying this out. All of my makeup brushes that I worked so hard for are ruin because I trusted you. I bought the same exact products you used and did the same exact thing you did. Now my brushes are RUINED😢😢😢😢
I typically wash my makeup brushes out once a week, and before I use one for a different colour of makeup. For example if I've used an eyeshadow brush to apply blue eyeshadow and then I want to use it to apply a pink one, I will wash it first, obviously so I won't end up with traces otherwise left over. I wear rubber cleaning gloves while doing it, since the ridges of a glove helps get the brush clean more easily until the colour is all out. I wet the bristles of my brush with cold water (not hot, since this can damage the brush by either melting the glue and/or damaging the bristles) and I use some baby shampoo to clean them. (I use a shop's own brand, like a supermarket or health store own brand, because I've found that cheaper shampoos are as good as the expensive ones in many cases, so I see no point in spending more money on something which is going to go down the drain anyway.) I've also used hand wash, which I find works well too. I run the glove and the brush bristles under water, then apply a bit of shampoo to the glove, and swish the bristles back and forth , then rinse them until they're clear. Sometimes I may need to do it more than once e.g. with a powder brush or a blusher brush. After that, I then squeeze out the excess water and leave them on an old towel on a flat surface to dry. I also line them up so they take up less room alternatively so that the bristles of different brushes are away from each other, since this also helps them dry more quickly.
hi .. just wondering if the vinegar is too much for the brushes? and isn't soaking them in water for twenty minutes going to get the water up the metal part where the brush hairs are glued?
Maria Colon She really needs to take this video down. I mean, she may not get sued, but she’ll make plenty of people mad if they try this method and end up ruining their brushes.
Soaking for 20 mins will make them seep in water upto the glue just like a wick does. This will make them fall apart. Then tugging with comb is even worse. Just take a silicone pot holder from dollar tree and a baby shampoo plus conditioner and it should do the trick. Of course it won't work if you used the brush a trillion times and are washing it once a year but if you do it regularly weekly or biweekly, this should help. This method in the video gave me panic attack four times.
I tried this about 3 months ago and my brushes came out perfectly clean. I have an upside down brush spinner that gets all the water out and then I lay them down. Being upside down while spinning also brings them back to their original shape. I didn’t realize that this was bad for my brushes though. :(
I used this method for the first time and only time out of desperation because I don’t have my usual cleaners.... came out fine but as I was rinsing them I swirled them in a bit of coconut oil on my hand to give them so conditioning. Didn’t ruin my brushes but I also didn’t soak them for more than 5 minutes and I used way less solution and a dribble of vinegar. I used more dish detergent than vinegar so maybe that’s why I got lucky. Usually I use baby wash but ran out.
In the middle of washing my own brushes with a beauty soap I wondered if there was a better and more hygienic way. I saw this as the first video and was so glad that I started to read the comments! I’m not going to use her method but I’m going to watch the video just to see exactly what she was going to do!
I clean my brushes like you do the Beauty Blender. I've tried the vinegar thing but it didn't work well and I don't like submerging my brushes. The bar soap technique works well for me. I have never seen my brushes so clean.
Hey I just want to help all of us out by saying that Sigma is having their Semi-annual sale right now so you could get brushes for cheap! Love your videos!!(:
To all the comments saying it doesn’t work: Stop hating on Kayleigh it’s not her fault. It has nothing to do with her it’s the quality of your brushes and also, don’t put the brushes any lower than the handle or the glue will melt and the bristles will come out, if you had a better quality brush or you didn’t put it any lower than the handle it would work. Stop hating on Kayleigh because it’s not her fault y’all are doing it wrong. If you don’t like the video leave she’s just trying to be helpful and sharing a very helpful tip/hack.
gonna try your soap concoction but without the hot hot water. steaming hot water has destroyed the glue in my brushes so I've learned that lesson! also I prefer to dry them with the bristles facing down :)
Cringe. I have purchased every single brush I own and every makeup product as well. For that reason, I will NOT wash my brushes like this or recommend anyone else to do so... If you get sent free brushes and makeup from companies for being a TH-camr, be careless, otherwise this exact method -the way she places them all in a jar, brushes through them, and soaks them in vinegar solution, will ruin your beautiful brushes. Drugstore or high end, I will take care of my brushes! I hope you all do your research before trying this.
I TOOK YOUR ADVICE! So far, IT WORKS!!! I didn't have to scrub them aggressively or anything. It just cleans itself, almost immediately, but leaving it definitely did the job. I thought the vinegar would make it stink, but it really doesn't. I had used different products but basically did the same thing: vinegar, detergent, and baby shampoo to soften the brushes. Now we just wait until they dry. ♥
Courtney McGuire a you're trying find a cheap way to clean your brushes try the brush egg it's a dollar and it works AMAZING and comes in different colors :) you can get it from eBay, amazon, and the wish app. Also try using zote soap with is a huge pink bar that one 97 cents that you can get almost anyway but I got mine from Walmart. This way is super cheap, last a very very long time and works better than anything I've even tried. ☺️
Courtney McGuire plz don't do it if you read the rest of the comments people will say it will make the bristles fall off and it ruined all of someone's brushes
I wash my brushes using the 1$ mexican bar soap called Zote, IT WORKS WONDERS. But I definitely need to try this jar method, thanks girl 💛 Also, Im really happy to see you smiling again, you deserve the best 💛💛💛
Thank you for sharing this information!! I have all my brushes on a towel drying. This works great! I used the same measurements you gave and they are clean and not damaged at all!
Or.... you could just take a liquid soap massage it into your brushes wash it out and dry them. I use this technique with my morphe brushes and it works absolutely perfectly 😀
I really loved your beauty sponge cleaning video, it really worked and now I have a clean bunch on sponges to use. So I saw you have a video for cleaning brushes too but thank God I read the comments first! Definitely will not be using vinegar to clean them, I dont want it to fall apart!! Thanks to all the commenters for saving my brush set!
because water was softening the glue. this is a terrible way to clean brushes. and not very cheap when you are going to have to replace all your brushes.
I think it would work better if the water didn't go all the way up to the ferrule. There is adhesive in the ferrule that helps the bristles stay in place and when they are all the way submerged, the adhesive loosens. 😢
I use Dr Bronners hemp liquid soap. It's very good for so many things besides this too. So it is definitely worth is. Very mild soap. Your adding vinegar i think is awesome! Will be trying that next time! ☆!!!Thank you so much!!!☆ keeps shining sista!
You can use vinegar, just don't put the brushes too deep so that the solution touches the glue part and you'll be fine, unless brushes can soak water like cloth, meaning liquid reaching the parts that are not even dipped, then please do avoid vingar.
I did this a couple of months ago. It worked great and didn't damage my brushes at all. Time to do again, but then, I don't use the brushes every day. If you use them every day and do this a lot more often it might start to damage them. 1:00
I just tried this and it worked SO well! I used to just use the dish soap method but I always found that no matter how much I rinsed it out they'd still be gunky but the vinegar really helped cut the residue! Also helped disinfect them! Highly recommend!
I tried this and my real techniques brush is absolutely destroyed, the bristles came out of its base and all of my brushes still were not clean!😡 very disappointed😭😑
Gurl..... you should have looked at the comment section or watched other videos like Desi Perkin’s video. Everybody was warning that this was not a good method, so yeah, I’m sorry about the brushes that sucks.❤️
Yes that happened with my RT brushes , you shouldn’t be immersing the whole head and getting the feral wet.... if the water gets into the base it loosens the glue and you will start losing hairs....
Maria Colon Were you ever able to replace your ruined brushes, Maria? 😕 It really upsets me, and every time I read another commenter who gets their brushes ruined absolutely hurts my heart. 😭💔
For what it's worth, I tried this method and my brushes did not fall apart at all. My super cheap ones and my more pricey bare minerals ones are all in tact. Wasn't a miracle worker though. My brushes aren't perfectly clean.
I've had mine for over a year and they dont even look that bad. Yes, I dont wear makeup every day, but I wear it everyday during the school year. I dont use a lot of makeup i guess
Recommend using some dove body wash or a bar of dove soap and if you use dove body wash rinse your brush put like a dot or too rub it on your hand rinse and keep doing that till it doesn’t look dirty and give it a good rinse if you use dove soap bar wet the brush rub it on the dove soap bar and rinse and reaper till they are clean and put them on a towel to dry
thank you! very pleased with the results! I just went ahead and also cleaned my beauty blender with the same method and it seemed to work just as well (although it takes forever to get out all of the dish soap from the spongy material lol!)
So, your mixture gets the brushes really clean, but letting them soak in it like that can weaken the glue holding the bristles, making the brushes not last as long. Also if you dry the brushes at a slant, with the handle ends on a rolled up towel, the water will not stay in the ferrule as long
You have a mind like mine. this is how I did it when I very first tried it on my own and then I searched and realized that I didn't do too bad of a job. Lol
the rats name is N O T ratatouille I mixed them together in a plate, swirled my brushes in the mix, rinsed them under the faucet and let them dry with the brush hairs facing down. Michelle Phan has a video from years ago on her channel and I use her technique to this day
3:25 is that Jeffree Star brush because this video is since 2017 but now it’s 2019 and this year he had a brush set so I don’t know but maybe he is coping or wut I’m confused help meeeeeeeee

READ COMMENTS BEFORE DOING SOMETHING.

Thank god I have an addiction to reading comments while listening to the video
I'll see you in rehab haha
Hahaha me too😂🤣

Exactly what i do!! Didnt know i was doing it like a makeup artist whoo

Vinager is an acid and will eat the glue that holds the brushes together. And they shouldn't be submerged in water for 20 minutes either

YT 5 nvm I’ll try it on a brush
I heard somewhere that you shouldn't use hot water because it's bad for the glue too

What happened??? Is this method completely wrong??
DO NOT USE VINEGAR LADIES.. AND GENTS... it will destroy you glue and could ruin the finish on some brushes. I use Dawn dish soap or an oil based face cleanser. Never had to buy the fancy expensive brush soap and it works just fine with no damage done.
I use an inexpensive clarifying shampoo
Yep. One time I spilled vinegar in a marbke flour and it destroyed it. Imagine brushes 😂

So helpful! My brushes are not dirty anymore! CUZ IT JUST DESTROYED THEM, THANKS VERY MUCH
Roman Tlenov I’m sorry I just laughed so hard at this comment! 😩😭
I know right! When she put vinegar in I was so confused, I’ve literally used vinegar to DISOVE glue
Star Skyy thanks so much!

Your health and safety isn’t worth risking for some too good to be true “beauty hack.”
Watching beauty and makeup videos is fun and can be informative, and I’m sure making them is quite fun, too, but remember, as an influencer, you have a responsibility to your audience. There’s a wealth of information available on the internet, so please be sure and do your research before making a video. What may seem like a simple video on how to clean your brushes could end up getting you into some unintended trouble.
Were, not “we’re,” stupid autocorrect! 😑🙄
I've done this and RUINED my brushes. Don't do this!
Margaret Dale where’s your method video then ?

Hey may i ask if coconut oil is fine? :0 if not olive oil? Thanks :3
I'm obsessed with your background it looks so peaceful and clean😍

Makeuphuney you are a youtuber right

Also, if you can prop your brush handle up on a wall or something so the bristles are facing down it's better for drying so no additional water gets in the brush head and tears apart the glue holding the bristles in place 😘
And when you have it soaking you should never have the water up above the barrel... And you can just roll or fold a towel behind the brush handles to elevate them that way the bristles don't get messed up
You can tell who read the comments before they commented lol. I’m seeing so many comments sayin “ I just tried this, hope it works!”
make sure you rinse your brushes facing DOWN otherwise the water will break down the glue!
misskvs It Will anyway because she left them in soapy water for 20 minutes.
I use to clean them with soap under running water, but I thought this was a good idea when I saw it.. how should you clean makeup brushes? =)
Fupe1000 I wash mine under running water too. You just have to be careful and make sure that while the brush is under the water, it is facing down.
.
I wasn't talking about running water, I was talking about leaving them in water for 20 minutes :)
“Imma show you what they look like when there dry” *-buys new ones-* “ok guys”
From what I learned:
1) don’t use vinegar it’ll eat the glue, I just used a little dish soap
2) don’t soak them in hot water, especially not for 20 minutes the glue will melt.

In art class we were taught to clean paint brushes used for oil painting with olive oil and dish soap, breaks down any stubborn residue and conditions the bristles at the same time to make them last longer, don’t use hot water or it will dislodge the glue over time causing shedding or for the brush head to fall off completely (learned this the hard way RIP Chanel kabuki brush)
But I’ve done this for years and my brushes are still like new
I also dry them facing down on a clean towel, by rolling one end of the towel to create a slope for them to rest up against so the water drained properly, never put them back upright while they’re still wet/damp
Don’t listen to her. I followed her and my brush bristles are completely fallen out from the handle. Sad sad 😞 😡😭
Wolfy *hugs* 😢
The quality of the brushes depends on if they fall out. But if you're going to still use her method don't have the water go past up the barrel of the brush. Typically just below. Or get a sponge put some dish soap on it and rub your bristles on the sponge and then rinse it clean holding the bristles downward, blot it dry and let it out to sit on an angle on a towel or paper towels.. so the water will run out of the barrel if there's any in it. Good luck... The second way is how I clean cheaper brushes
Wolfy maybe your brushes are bad quality
Yeah it's better to just put it in something shallow or dip and brush it around your hands. The part the brushes are stuck to isn't supposed to get wet for that reason
Wolfy yea I was like vinegar?! I just use B&BW hand soap. End up smelling amazing
Dish soap and a little olive oil works wonders and doesn't ruin your brushes, doing this method will make the bristles fall out...
Rainn do you soak the bristles in the oil and soap? I genuinely dont know how to clean my brushes😂
Rainn I’ve noticed coconut oil cleans mine well, so I’m curious if that could be a substitute for olive or vinegar. But I’ve never submerged them like this in a jar. Just used the standard brush cleaner egg shaped tool.

Soaking for 20 mins will make them seep in water upto the glue just like a wick does. This will make them fall apart. Then tugging with comb is even worse. Just take a silicone pot holder from dollar tree and a baby shampoo plus conditioner and it should do the trick. Of course it won't work if you used the brush a trillion times and are washing it once a year but if you do it regularly weekly or biweekly, this should help. This method in the video gave me panic attack four times.

How often do you need to clean your brushes?
I tried this last night and my brushes came out so clean! I haven't seen my brushes this clean is such a long time. Thanks for sharing this tip!!
I tried this about 3 months ago and my brushes came out perfectly clean. I have an upside down brush spinner that gets all the water out and then I lay them down. Being upside down while spinning also brings them back to their original shape. I didn’t realize that this was bad for my brushes though. :(
Girl this ruined my makeup brushes
Marie T. Bar soap is safest. No soaking. Ingredients in bar soap cleans them better than liquid soap. Agree.

Stop hating on Kayleigh it’s not her fault. If you don’t like the video leave she’s just trying to be helpful and sharing a very helpful tip/hack.
gonna try your soap concoction but without the hot hot water. steaming hot water has destroyed the glue in my brushes so I've learned that lesson! also I prefer to dry them with the bristles facing down :)
how do you store them facing down?

Nanda Panda yep, I have one and I love it. I even wash my beauty sponges with it :)
You could also use any soap bar.
Courtney McGuire actually cause you more
Money!! This technique will ruin your brushes!
Do not do it u will ruin your brushes
Princess Jaida this jar method will ruin the brushes?
yes it will loosen the glue and make your brush fall apart!
Jenny S. .
Lisseth Chavez me too
Thank you for sharing this information!!
Give your enemies the dirty brush water as an iced coffee🤫
Omg yes 😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yes. . . It's perfect *pets cat* JaMeS cHaReLs want an iced cofee 😄
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Autumn killion good idea 😈😂
All these years later and this is still how I clean my brushes. It is an easy effective solution!
AFTER READING THE COMMENTS I JUST USED SOAP AND HOT WATER IN A GLASS (NO VINEGAR). WORKED BETTER THAN EVER!
Seems destructive. Just set them on fire. 🤣 It'll be less work and more entertaining.
Love Billy 😂🤣
Video starts at 0:55
Emily thanks
Or you could wait like a PATIENT viewer. Like that's sad, you couldn't even wait 55 SECONDS. dang..
@@trixiemattelsbigtoe5193 omgggg ikr .....😭😂😂😂
I really loved your beauty sponge cleaning video, it really worked and now I have a clean bunch on sponges to use. So I saw you have a video for cleaning brushes too but thank God I read the comments first! Definitely will not be using vinegar to clean them, I dont want it to fall apart!!
Thanks to all the commenters for saving my brush set!
Drying them flat on a towel is soooo bad for the brushes, you should put them somewhere where the ends ( with the hairs ) hang of
I used to do this method and then i noticed that the brushes would quickly shed or the handle would turn white (if a sigma brush)
because water was softening the glue. this is a terrible way to clean brushes. and not very cheap when you are going to have to replace all your brushes.
I think it would work better if the water didn't go all the way up to the ferrule. There is adhesive in the ferrule that helps the bristles stay in place and when they are all the way submerged, the adhesive loosens. 😢
Kohrie Black I wouldn’t soak them at all. Not worth the risk of having the hairs soak up the water, even if the water line is below the ferrule.
I wouldn’t be able to do that because they would be sitting in there own dirt for a while I wouldn’t feel that they were clean
Rebecca Xxx that's why she runs all them under the fresh water for a few minutes while brushing.
I did this a couple of months ago. It worked great and didn't damage my brushes at all. Time to do again, but then, I don't use the brushes every day. If you use them every day and do this a lot more often it might start to damage them. 1:00
The dirt reminds me of light coffee 😂
RIP to my makeup brushes 🙂.
Kara Evans this happened to me to, don't expect an apology from her either.
Kara Evans 😭
Gurl..... you should have looked at the comment section or watched other videos like Desi Perkin’s video.
KAYLEIGH YOURE GORGEOUSSSS!!! 😍❤️
P.s Congratulations on 100K on your vlog channel! 🎈
this is the best cleaning makeup brushes video ever!!
For what it's worth, I tried this method and my brushes did not fall apart at all. My super cheap ones and my more pricey bare minerals ones are all in tact. Wasn't a miracle worker though. My brushes aren't perfectly clean.
Wait..... THIS IS A METHOD TO GET RID OF FLEAS! I was watching dog hacks for my shiba and Samoyed and that’s what it said! Wtf
Excellent information!! Thank you!! I was frustrated trying to clean mine but I will do this tomorrow!!
Ronni Martin you liked your own video sometimes I do that to and I also liked your video
I'm so glad I read the comments before attempting this!!
Won’t ur brushes smell of vinegar
Thank you for the tips. How frequent do you recommend cleaning our makeup brushes? I do it every 30-45 days.
The best is to do it once a week
She said the past week....that’s how my look in a month
I've had mine for over a year and they dont even look that bad. Yes, I dont wear makeup every day, but I wear it everyday during the school year. I dont use a lot of makeup i guess
do not listen to this crap advice! thus distroyed my amskeuo brushes and I'm so upset
Mine are bent, brittle, and smell like vinegar no matter how much I rinse or comb them while wet
Yep, just use Liquid Dial, a moisturizing antibacterial soap. Easy as that.
Stop buying your brushes at the swapmeet
Bella staropoli LMAO SAME LITTERALY 2 of my brushes seperated and now i have to buy new ones 😪😱 wish I read this comment sooner before I tried it. Lol
Lol
This ruined all of my makeup brushes when I tried this out...
Never wet your brush at the base!
Dawn soap & extra virgin olive oil 👌
@@AlyKistThe360 did u mix the soap and vinegar together or did u only use one?
the rats name is N O T ratatouille
I mixed them together in a plate, swirled my brushes in the mix, rinsed them under the faucet and let them dry with the brush hairs facing down.
Michelle Phan has a video from years ago on her channel and I use her technique to this day
