You know, I was watching this again... and you know what I love about this scene? Well, aside from EVERYTHING, I really love it when Rumple tells Regina to "Please, sit," after she sends Emma and Henry away. I never noticed the significance before now. A lot of people seem to wonder why Rumple didn't simply say "Please" when asking her for the cup, but I think understand it. He doesn't use "please" to get the cup because he doesn't want to. Because despite how obviously desperate he is to get it back, he is secretly enjoying the game they are playing. Earlier in the scene he compels Regina to sit using "please," specifically to demonstrate to her that even though she won this round, HE is still the one in control and he COULD make her do anything he asked. You know a show is great when it takes only one scene like this to make you tense. I felt like I was in that room the first time I watched this scene thinking, 'Shit is about to hit the fan,' when Mr. Gold said his real name. With that being said, once Elsa came onto the show, it went downhill.
@@taralang8854 I think the writers started treating the characters too much like stories. Earlier in the show it was established that all the fairies tales were actual accounts of real events that took place in another universe, and the people were brought here by a curse. So the "characters" were real people, not characters. But then they introduced the Author (who should've been called the Journalist imo), the Land of Untold Stories and when the Black Fairy tried to break Emma's faith the "Realms of Story" were being destroyed. I thought they weren't stories, I thought they were just realms? What happened? Are they aware of the fact that they're stories? It really removed a lot of the real world/fairy tale merging feel.
I think it has to do with the fact that season 1 was moving (both in flashback fairytale realm and current day) toward the one epic finale of Snow/Charming waking up in EF and curse being broken in Storybrooke. There’s really not much else the writers could have done. Had they kept the curse going, the show would not have lasted as long, people would’ve gotten bored. But moving on meant slightly less exciting, though I think equally interesting, storylines. There were limited options, but I think they did pretty well with what they have, don’t you?
@@mckayleem3098 I was surprised how well they pulled off the storylines not involving the curse all the way to mid S3 (The Neverland Arc, which is my favourite of the whole show, because of how it develops characters, has very enganging story, great villain and an ending that made me cry). However, after that I felt like they started losing ideas. The started reapeting the curse storyline, came back to Storybrooke without any changes in scenery, making the mid season finale of S3 have less impact. But my biggest problem with post-Neverland Once Upon a Time is how they ruined Rumpelstilskin. He was easily the best character in the early seasons and he should have stayed dead. After his ressurection they threw away all of his devlopment and made him evil without any reason. S4's first half was okay, but quite boring, S4's second half was a chaotic mess, S5's first half seemed like it was going to be great at the start, but was ruined with that stupid plot twist with Hook being the Dark One, S5's second half was actually quite good, I like how it brought back many of the characters from earlier seasons, S6 was good overall, I think it's my favourite from the post-Neverland era, and S7 started a bit slow, but got much better later and finally did Rumeplstislkin right.
Samu 987 I get that. Personally, I will love anything anyone does with a character just because Robert Carlyle’s so damn good, but from an objective standpoint him going back and forth between redemption and pure evil did begin to seem redundant post-season 3. Ultimately, I am still glad they brought him back because there were some great scenes and the closure they gave him in season 7 was top-notch. And I also loved Dark Hook just because the writers really set Colin O’donohugh free and I was not disappointed by his chilling performance. He made a great dark one, but yes the fact that so many people have become and un-become Dark Ones has significantly lessened the power/impact of that title. So I see your point. I loved season 5, but I think that’s just because I had an obsession with the Camelot type stories when I was young and the first half of the season really woke up that child-like fascination with all-things-medieval 😂 I would have liked season 6, but honestly Robin’s death broke me and I had a hard time enjoying anything after end of season 5 because of it. Again, objectively it’s a different story. It was a great season and I could see that, but I also found them killing off Robin really pointless. It was hard to continue because it Regina’s arch seemed like it would have no resolution. It also made me hate Zelena. Regina had someone and was doing well and then they had to mess it all up again lol. I also didn’t like how they brought Robin/not-Robin back in S6. And they whole EQ/Regina feud got a bit muddled toward the end. I see what they were trying to do and it did make a valuable point, but it’s still just odd that she was split in half and they left it that way. I will say that, as painful as it was, I do respect the writers for keeping Robin dead in S7. As much as I hated his death, bringing him back just would’ve made everything they went through seem irrelevant and wouldn’t have reflected reality very well. Even if I disagree with the initial decision to kill him, if you make a choice as a writer, stick to the choice.
This scene was SO well done. Lana and Robert are incredible actors. The emotions were so advanced and perfect. I have to keep watching this it's so amazing. Not to mention the fact that Lana is freaking gorgeous.
What I love the most about the show is the fact that the "villains" are the best character without any doubt. Just think about Regina and Rumplestinskin but also Zelena and Hook.... Definitely the most successful characters!
The only heroes who were fantastic were Emma (usually) and Robin Hood, who originally tried to murd*r Rumpelstiltskin to steal from him. Sooo not the most heroic, though I guess David actually did the same thing with the Siren and still counts as a hero. Guess it doesn't count as murd*r when it's a monster, hey?
I remember when I for started watching this and the big question for me and the girl I was watching it with was "Does Mr. Gold know who he is?" They answered that question in a very amazing way
I always love the pause between please and sit at the start of their conversation. There are so many different inflections he could have done with that line but the one he chose was perfect. The way he says sit is clearly an order and the look on both their faces in that moment makes it clear that he is the one in charge. It’s perfect!!!
He of all people knows the value of a name. He didn't just say "please" because then he wouldn't have gotten the cup. The cup was worth the price of his name (the price of Regina knowing he was awake). I love this scene so much.
I injured my leg back in 2011 & I was in immobile for about 3 months. That's when I started bing watching shows on Netflix for the 1st time. I started wit Breaking Bad & Lost & after I caught up on those shows I discovered OUAT & started watching it. I was only on my 2nd day on the 1st season & then dis scene came up & WOW was I shocked dat he remembered. An emotional episode too - afterward I was hooked.
There are so many emotional scenes in the series and quite a few shook me to the core. I find it fascinating how the story is told. Little by little you learn why the characters do what they do, what happened in the past and how they became what they are.... This is my 7th time watching the series (Am I addicted? Of course 😅😅) and I'm still noticing details I hadn't seen before... I might consider myself a serial junkie, but this show is the best I've ever seen.
i watch this over and over because i love the interplay between the two of them. it takes great actors to truly bring dark characters to life, and i love watching Lana Parilla play the Evil Queen. Long live Regina!
Regina knew he was awake for 28 years, well at least for the last 10 years, when she tried to adopt Henry. And when Emma came to town, he used his “Please” trick in the garden. They are both smart, smarter then you think.
Along with others in the comments, I also thought he could have used his "please" trick, but then I wondered if he was tired of pretending and wanted Regina to know that he remembered who he was and that he was still the one in control.
+עלמה .ב I don't really see what your point is. He uses 'please' in the past, implying that he remembers, but not explicitly stating it. I think it's part of why Regina suspected. Like I said, he was tired of pretending and wanted to tell her who was in control. And the way to do that was to outright admit that he remembered who he was by telling her his name. Using the please trick at that point might have tipped her off, but they were both tired of playing games and Rumple can't resist a deal, so he accepted hers.
That and the fact that Gold just wanted the chipped cup back. There wasn't magic in Storybrooke at this point so if Gold didn't do what Regina asked, he was never going to get the only thing he had left from Belle at that time.
bigb860 What we're talking about was the reason Gold didn't use the "please" trick, which didn't require magic. It was a condition under which Regina was given the curse, that she must do what Rumple asked as long as he said "please". I'm not sure exactly how it worked, but we were shown it being successful several times without magic around. My point was that he could have said "please" to get the cup back, but he was tired of the pretense and wanted Regina to know that he remembered and was in control.
KatzePiano Yeah, good point. Didn't think of it that way. Wasn't there a scene where Gold tried the "please" and Regina said something like "Your pleases no longer effect me", or something like that and ever since then, it never happened? I can't remember if it was before or after this. But I do see your point. It was time she knew the truth. Gold was locked up but still had to ensure she knew he was still Rumpelstiltskin.
I have an story with this show: I remember OUAT began when I was 15 years old, in high school. All my friends usted to tell me: YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS SERIES BECAUSE YOU LOVE DISNEY SO MUCH. In those times, we had to watch one episode per week on Sony Channel (I'm from South America and we don’t have ABC) … so it was so frustrating to me. I always said: Someday I will watch it completely. Well, 10 years later… I'm 25, I was enjoying a vacation after finishing college. And I discovered this was uploaded on Disney + and I said: “It's time”. I watch the 7 seasons in 1 month. SINCE THEN I AM OBSESSED. HOW I RUINED my 2011-2018 🥺❤️
i'm like 60 years too late and a total idiot but i just realised how clever it was to reveal his identity using his NAME given his fairy tale counterpart. i was always too caught up with the acting to realise the significance of that XD
Here's another reference to the original tale: in the original version when she guesses his name, he gets so mad he stomps his right foot so hard it opens a chasm that he falls into. Which foot was it that her hurt? His right one!
@@littlesongbird1 The name Rumpelstiltskin means "little rattle stilt," which is taken to possibly mean two things - one, a goblin/imp who shakes house posts or two, a person who uses a stick to walk. Sound familiar?
Apparently Regina has to do whatever Mr. Gold asks of her so long as he says, "please," right? He could've used that little enchantment a lot more to get what he wanted...
@Mila Milo Uhh seriously? Regina was using the control she had over the huntsman's heart to rape him, and Zelena also used magic to disguise herself as Robin's wife to rape him. Hard to argue this couldn't happen when it actually did, lol.
@@EuphoriaDreamer Ah, I see. Honestly, it’s kind of an iffy subject because there’s also authorial intent. To you and me, it’s clear that having sex with someone under false pretenses (zelena’s diguisre, gothel’s disguise) is false consent and thus counts as rape, and someone being literally unable to say no to it (Regina with the heart) also counts, but other people who aren’t as knowledgeable about the ethics of consent may not see it the same way. As such, they might get away with showing something like that (also note in all the examples, it’s women who are exerting power over men, probably because it’s seen as “less bad” in the eyes of the ignorant) but more explicit r*pe could be considered too far. I feel like there’s a line that they don’t want to cross, albeit one that seems arbitrarily made based off unconscious biases.
I noticed how he told her please sit and she sat. In 1x02 he made a deal with Regina that she'll need to heed his every request as long as he says Please. This show is amazing.
This was the best moment/scene of the whole series. The power tug-of-war between these two characters throughout the series was amazing to watch, but this moment made me ask 'who has the power here?' When she says 'tell me your name' and he answers with a tilt of his head and smirk on his mouth 'Rumpelstiltskin' it was chilling and exciting.
You know, I just realized... until this moment we didn't really know for certain if the fairy tale aspect was all just in Henry's mind or not. This moment showed us that their stories actually were real.
I started watching this show because my Niece loved it and she begged me to watch it on Netflix everyday. Turns out I got addicted after season 1 😂 It’s a shame how downhill the show went in later seasons cause the 1st couple of seasons were fiya 🔥
They never really were frank and honest with each other of what he really wants, she can act as if he wanted something else, and whenever he says "Please", she would act foolish and give him another item.
For that split second when Regina is swaying the cup back and forth right before she lets Rumple take it you can see a look in Rumples eyes and on his face that shows great fear/desperation a similar look we see in other parts of Rumples history like when the red head on the battle field tells him he'll leave his son fatherless and when Killian told him to battle for Mielah or a scenario in his future when Neal says that he has no interest in talking to him and when Belle makes him cross the town line this look caught my eye because it's a very rare thing to see from Rumplestiltskin but that's how we know he's sincere. That look is as simple and pure as the look of sadness in a child however after that split second when he plucks the cup from Regina Rumple returns to his dark self

i love the smile before he said his name only robert carlyle can make a character so manipulative, but yet so like able, in one scene. just love the character. and the actor.
I remember watching this scene and when he said his name, I screamed, “HE KNOOOOOOOWS!!!!!”
I'm with you, that's the scene I remember most from OUAT , and mainly for the chills I got thinking, "OMG he knows!!" Great television.
Same 😂
I was like >:O HE KNOWS! I CALLED IT!!!!
Sameee
His damned voice
You know a show is great when it takes only one scene like this to make you tense. I felt like I was in that room the first time I watched this scene thinking, 'Shit is about to hit the fan,' when Mr. Gold said his real name.
With that being said, once Elsa came onto the show, it went downhill.
i thought so too but i must admit i liked it when mallifecent, cruella, and ursella came on i thought that was rather fun actually.
Meh it was still good and season 5 and 1 are my favorite seasons with season 3 and 2 being a close second.
Season 4 > Season 5 if only just for the Author arc.
I agree 100 percent. part of the reason why i stopped watching the show
Season 1 was just amazing, especially compared to the later ones
Regina visiting Rumple in his cell. Must have been a deja vu, right???
Got it??
This scene was SO well done. Lana and Robert are incredible actors. The emotions were so advanced and perfect. I have to keep watching this it's so amazing. Not to mention the fact that Lana is freaking gorgeous.
What I love the most about the show is the fact that the "villains" are the best character without any doubt. Just think about Regina and Rumplestinskin but also Zelena and Hook.... Definitely the most successful characters!
Hook wasn't good.
"You want me to leave you alone with a prisoner?" "29 and a half minutes."
When he answers, "Oh, yeah," the only thought I had was, 'Such a sassy little imp.' And I still have that thought every time I see the scene again.
He of all people knows the value of a name. He didn't just say "please" because then he wouldn't have gotten the cup. The cup was worth the price of his name (the price of Regina knowing he was awake). I love this scene so much.
The cinematography with the bars!!!! 10/10
I gotta admit, Gold is sexier when he's dark
yes he is
agree
So you mean all the freaking time/whenever he appears on screen?
Eloísa García what do women see in him aside from the awesome hair?
@@Lonarix1 in season 1 and 2 him and Regina have the same haircut 😂😂
Lana and Bobby were two of the strongest actors on the show
i love how when he talks its like a whisper, shows how in control he is i just love rumple aka mr gold, and i love robert carlye he just rocked it
I love the intensity of this scene and how the camera movies tighter and tighter on their faces until Rumple tells her who he is.
One of the best scenes in the entire show.
Love this scene!!!! Even though Regina won this round you can feel the power and suspense when Gold finally says his real name😍🤗
i watch this over and over because i love the interplay between the two of them. it takes great actors to truly bring dark characters to life, and i love watching Lana Parilla play the Evil Queen. Long live Regina!
After this episode I Just had 2 questions:
1- are belle and rumple getting back together?
2- the most important, DID EMMA BROUGHT MR. GOLD HIS CONE ?
1) Haven't watched further from this episode so can't answer that.
2) I expect she did as she said "just this once".
@@BennyBringerOfChaos thanks
@@BennyBringerOfChaos I thought she said just this once to Regina being left alone with a prisoner
Regina knew he was awake for 28 years, well at least for the last 10 years, when she tried to adopt Henry. And when Emma came to town, he used his “Please” trick in the garden. They are both smart, smarter then you think.
this scene always reminds me of the scene from "the thing you love most" where regina visits rumple in his cell for his help on the curse
Along with others in the comments, I also thought he could have used his "please" trick, but then I wondered if he was tired of pretending and wanted Regina to know that he remembered who he was and that he was still the one in control.
+KatzePiano If he'd say please she would know that he remembers
When he said his name I just had a season 6 flash back
“I know you’re awake Rumple. You’re always awake”
0:14 hi emma was adorable
I wish they didn’t get rid of the “please” sub plot so quickly. It would have been a bit more interesting if it lasted through the Neverland arc.
The curse was broken, so that part of the was essentially void either way
"What's your name"? "Rumpelstiltskin"
Regina: oh sh*t.
I have an story with this show:
I remember OUAT began when I was 15 years old, in high school.
HOW I RUINED my 2011-2018 🥺❤️
He's so much more handsome with long hair.
This was the scene that made me decide to watch OUAT.
Oh man! I forgot how good this show was! This cast is amazing!
Thank You.....Your Majesty, most chilling line ever
i'm like 60 years too late and a total idiot but i just realised how clever it was to reveal his identity using his NAME given his fairy tale counterpart. i was always too caught up with the acting to realise the significance of that XD
@@CatGold5047 Neat. I never knew that thanks for sharing.
Apparently Regina has to do whatever Mr. Gold asks of her so long as he says, "please," right? He could've used that little enchantment a lot more to get what he wanted...
I wonder if that was the real reason she lied about Belle being alive. All he had to do was tell her "Please" and she would have released Belle.
@Mila Milo Uhh seriously? Regina was using the control she had over the huntsman's heart to rape him, and Zelena also used magic to disguise herself as Robin's wife to rape him. Hard to argue this couldn't happen when it actually did, lol.
@@EuphoriaDreamer It seems whoever you replied to deleted their comment. But I must admit, I’m dying to know what was said
@@ChestersonJack Can't remember exactly, but I think they just said that rapey things couldn't happen on the show.
I love this scene! The acting is brilliant. Love the irony of Regina asking rumple for his name
Yeah right. It is clear to her that he remembers - "please sit" 😅
Since it is a very small town, there's a very good, almost 100% chance, that Emma and Henry went to get ice cream from the Ice Queen, right?
Yeah, they did. But Ingrid took her memory so that's why Emma didn't remember about her.
My god, Henry’s actor was so adorable.
Back when this show was one of THEE best on TV
gaaaaa one of the top 3 moments! oh yeah! I love it! Living in the memories!
I love how during the first season we can’t tell if the fairy tale land is Harry’s imagination or real and it was so suspenseful
I remember the chills this scene gave me first time I saw it! The first time we realise or are told, this is ALL true!!!
Rumple: "Bring me back a cone?"
That's cute xD
one of the best moments in tv history
AAHHH! I LOVED IT WHEN I FIRST WATCHED THIS!!!
This was such a pivotal point in the show
they look so different from the 5th series
You know, I just realized... until this moment we didn't really know for certain if the fairy tale aspect was all just in Henry's mind or not. This moment showed us that their stories actually were real.
Seemed for sure after episode 6 when Graham died
Still obsessed with this scene in 2018, but since it's officially Dec. 31, 2018, I guess I'll carry my obsession into the New Year as well lol
I started watching this show because my Niece loved it and she begged me to watch it on Netflix everyday. Turns out I got addicted after season 1 😂 It’s a shame how downhill the show went in later seasons cause the 1st couple of seasons were fiya 🔥
Yeah I’m on 5 and I can see it going downhill since the second half of s4. I’m still enjoying it for moments like these.
@@nanossquad1706 I still enjoyed it with my niece tho. Wish they’d make a reboot 😢
He didn't even have to tell her his name, he just needed to say, "Please!"
God damnit...
Plus, as he said, the fact that he never forgot who he really was changes nothing about the deal between him and the Queen.
@@Stardweller1 he did forget who he was. It was when emma told him her name that made him remember who he was.
They never really were frank and honest with each other of what he really wants, she can act as if he wanted something else, and whenever he says "Please", she would act foolish and give him another item.
Bring me back a cone? 😂
Idk why but that makes me smile every time
The best 2 characters on the show BY FAR
Im back many years later. Oh god my crush for Rumple was soooo huge. I mean i still think hes a hunk. But omg i love Robert. Such a great actor. And Lana is so brilliant at being Regina and the evil queen. This is so damn good.

Mr Gold is so polite. He always says 'please' when he wants something.
