Shekharji, as an NRI I'm very grateful for your insight and your words to inform us of geopolitical status of the day in such simple and easy to understand terms. Jai Hind Sirji!
In 1984, I joined DD as a cameraman and had just finished training at FTII, Pune. I was posted to Jalandhar (which I considered a death warrant!) in May of that year. I sat at the Mandi House and told them there is no way I am going to Jalandhar and would rather resign. DD was desperately looking for trained cameramen and I had already worked for a year in Srinagar on a contract basis. They didn't want to lose one and my posting was changed to Nagpur. All the events you are quoting are still fresh in my mind as I am an avid follower of news and current affairs.
Shekhar ji, I just like how every single day of your life is/was interesting, attractive and exciting. Please don't stop this series. You serve as a motivation to young people like us to never give up in any situation and be truthful to our work. I don't watch the news anymore, instead I wait for you to explain the current crisis without any bias . Thankyou sir. Please keep it up 🙂
Thank you, Gourav. Yes, my work has ensured an exciting life for me. I am glad you are enjoying these videos. Do keep watching and writing in...best wishes, Shekhar
Hi sir! I would like to commend you once again. Your earlier 2-episodes series on the Nellie massacre and your ongoing series on Punjab/Bhindranwala/Blue Star have been some of the finest pieces of journalism I have seen. I am even more appreciative of these considering the fact that none of these could have brought up good memories for you. The fact that you were there and were covering some of these yourself and are willing to these with us is a blessing for us millennials who have heard of these events but were fortunate enough to have not lived through them. Thank you so much! Regards,
I just watched the first two parts and was hoping that the third part would come soon. Lo and behold. What a brilliant way of explaining things. Thank you Shekhar.
Waiting for tomorrow's episode! I hope it also covers what happened in Punjab post 1984. It may not be newsiest but decade that followed 1984 was even worse than Bhindranwale era, specially for people of Punjab.
Shekarji, this is an awesome vlog. The way you tell these stories are very engaging and I must say now in my 60s, I vividly remember all the news instances that you talk about. The personal stories are not just entertaining, but also gives us glimpses of what you journalists have endure to bring news to us. Please do keep them coming.
SG, thank you for sharing such anecdotes. Most of us who are born in late 90s and 2000s have very little idea about the prevailing climate and the atrocities Congress party has done in India.
A most gripping narration of the events of a most newsiest year. So many seemingly unconnected stories woven beautifully in common thread of the year. Bore and caliber, trajectory and direct mode, woven into a pun by Gen Sunderji. Very little about Siachen though. I wish there is some story telling on travails of soldiers in the glacier too. Thank you SG for the outstanding stories bouquet of 1984.
Certainly the best snapshot of a news year - so eloquently presented, thank you Shekharji 🙏 Looking forward to your take on the 'why' or root cause/s of the Bhindranwale saga after this series.
Oh dear SG, on that bad day, at 6 pm, I was traveling from Udyog Bhawan to Saket. At Safdarjung Dome, 10 hooligans with iron rods boarded the DTC bus and started thrashing sardarji the sitting next to me at rear end. I could shout at them and blocked the mishap, only for few minutes. Later when the bus crossed the DGCA flyover, I saw many sardars were chased in the middle of the road below. I could see many blood pool on the road. Next day at 8:30 am from Saket to SN depot, I saw all ruins and charred vehicles on the road. I am the mute witness to all such bad history in the Capital, at the age 24. I know how it's painful to you too as a young reporter. Memories are not at all sweet.
23:47 "Nothing harms a nation more than a deliberate denial of truthful events to its citizens, particularly in a period of trauma" Yet many "secular" journalists lauded Sharad Pawar when he purposely put out claim that a 13th blast occured in Muslim dominated area in 1993.
In my entire life the word ‘ misunderstanding’ most and last dangerous , responsible, and on going destructive, and life killer of individuals as well nations too,
So artfully told! Gather by the fireside, when Shekharji starts down memory lane. Rings so close to home, those were my highschool wonderyears in Cgarh
1984 was also the year Mrs Gandhi dismissed the Sikkim govt, Farook Abdullah govt and also the NTR govt which after a month she was forced to reinstate. Also the year when PT Usha lost the Olympic medal by a whisker.
With folded hands and bow in praise of your dedication to provide vivid memories of this unfortunate milestone…we have to hear it and recognize what can be done so to prevent repetition (learn lesions and apply it)
Good nostalgic reporting.I was studying in grade 12 and reading In my India today with limited English knowledge.1984 is really scary year especially in first week of November even though I am far from Delhi in small town of Gujarat.
Fascinating story. You have delivered today's CTC in the style of National Interest. I am glad that you have shared your experience, rather than reiterate the well known political history. Thumbs up to you!
Well said SG! Keep on going with these accounts! Nowadays, news media has become so vitriolic, your stories are a pleasant reminder about what journalism used to be and still can be! I never understood the concept of an wave election, where people forget everything and vote for their leader! This is not healthy for any democracy- votes should be given on local and urgent issues, not based on emotion!
@Shekhar, i didn't write to you earlier, but would like to feed back, that this hybrid Cut the Clutter and First Person Second Draft is really insightful. I think you should do something similar to the CTC episodes you rerun. Every time i see those reruns,i feel disappointed because in the first place, i remember them from before and secondly, since then and the rerun, time would ha e elapsed, leaving scope for some updates. I would be happy if you do some edited or comented reruns of the CTC episodes. Thank you.
Thank you for writing in, Margie. I take your point completely on the reruns, will try to see what can be done about them. I'm glad that you are enjoying these 'hybrid' CTCs. Keep watching and writing in...stay well and best wishes, Shekhar
Shekhar Ji, You embody the ethics of working in field and collect the gems while soiling fingers and palm in the assigned work. I found you as a fresh wave of journalism after demise Vinod Dua Ji. Don't keep your memory notes at home. Do make it as video library at print. It remains for long time after we are gone. Again, what a Great series achievements. In your case, that's your career. 🎉
Shekhar Gupta is a great (true) story teller. Not many Indian journalists are so well gifted and so well trusted. I am sure that all the people mentioned in today's episode would be very amused watching it. But for such detailed narrations, common people like us viewers will never know how professional the officers in our Armed Forces, Intelligence establishments and CRPF are. SG's recollection of that day in Police Station in Amritsar is really out of a Salim-Javed script. If his bluff had not worked, I don't know what would have happened to him and to Brahma Chellaney. Eagerly looking forward to the next episode.
I can't understand why the Sikhs thought that Army had desecrated the temple and not Bhindranwale. I am South Indian, if extremists took over the great temples in TN and used it as a base for terrorism I would welcome the Army to flush them out. Hell, even the Kaaba was stormed by the Saudis. Please enlighten me on this.
Becoz it was not marely attack on sant bhinderwala ,,it was attack on our souls ,, along with darbaar sahib ,, indian army attack on 120 gurudwara , when the gurudwaras had nothing to do with any khalistani ,, they also attack on library n deliberately burnt all the pious scriptures ,, the scriptures also had nothing to do with any khalistani ,, it simplifies it was a genocide by govt ,, they jst wanted to target a particular religion ,,, it's quite easy to put ur opinions n pretending that we r unbiased ,,practically ur not
Thank for this very revealing and honest account. The irony of the emphasis on the semantics of direct and trajectory mode arty fire in the midst of an unfolding tragedy is not missed, how much ever the venerable General might wish to show his concern for collateral damage the damage of the bungled planning of pompous Generals was anything but a horrific collateral catastrophe
Good thing about Indian Kashmir is that their culture is still preserved… In AJK and Gilgit Baltistan… there are no Kashmiri speaking people even left there … in their 1991 census 60-70k people spoke Kashmiri , in 2001 census only 2-3k spoke Kashmiri
Please make an episode on mutinies that happened in the Indian army post bluestar operation, we don't know much about it apart from the incident at the Sikh regimental centre Ramgarh.
I'm sure she'll not mind if I thank you. She is one of the most formidable reporter-journalists of our time...thank you for writing in, best wishes...Shekhar
Interestingly, Shekhar Gupta is not speaking on EPFO's investment in Adani shares.... And, otherwise vehemently defended Adani in 2 CTC episodes... Either Adani has already invested in ThePrint or he is trying to save ThePrint from IT Department's raid followed by formal acquisition by Adani! Just the way it happened to NDTV and TheQuint
He doesn't want to get raided so staying in government's goodbooks. Also you can see how much this site is infested with bhakts so he is supposed to serve them.
Great to listen to again and again!. Shekarji, I have a suggestion... Why don't you call these officers, journalists and others and have discussion on these subjects or interesting things they have done in their life. It would be great to listen to.....
I guess when Orwell wrote his monumental book 1984 (in which he imagined a surreal vision of humanity held captive by totalitarian superpowers), he had ZERO idea that 1984 would be a barely eventful year, except the LA Olympics boycott by the Eastern Bloc, and the violent and tumultuous times in India, the world's largest democracy. The Brown Man's predicaments are almost always off radar the White Man's world view - it seems.
This is the most fun CTC ep i've watched Also, this is just a suggestion But you can use 'john harris' or 'vox' type graphics This may help you in increasing your view counts
I read a book written by General Sunderji. It described his experience in Africa. To understand the true scene in disturbed places in Africa where Sunderji was posted, I found it very interesting. It described escape of a war criminal by paying small bribe

@Shekhar ji, it would be interesting to throw light on internal & external operations of the Indian intelligence agencies. There are so many like operation 'cactus' & others . Request you to consider this.
Shekharji, please add some uplifting incidents that restore faith in us. While there may have been some tribal incidents, we hope to hear about an Indian equivalent of Oskar Schindler.
Dear Mr Shehkar Gupta , good morning! I would like to ask to you a question regarding the campaign for Khalistan? As an eye witness and journalist who watched first hand the events of 1984 do you think that the bombing of Air India Flight 182 on 23 June 1985 was directly related to the terrible events of 1984 or can it be seen as an isolated event apart from Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Ms Indira Gandhi and the subsequent Sikh riots? Regards Manizeh Syed Ali

Totally! Best comment ever!
But FG was dumb, while SG is a keen and sensitive observer, and a sharp and witty storyteller. The contrast is overwhelming.

This gentleman is a walking history book. I learn daily about Indian history by watching his lectures❤
Extremely good narration. Went back to this period by listening to Mr. Gupta.
These CTC episodes deserve a big OTT platform so people learn our political history with ease.

What a story teller. An absolute delight. ❤❤❤
love your way of telling stories. Please keep them coming. Respect.

It is always fascinating to hear old stories from Shekhar ji.
Thank you Shekhar ji.
Thank you for watching. Support from friends like you keep us going. Do keep writing in...stay well and best wishes, Shekhar
Please Shekarji also do episodes on bofors , financial crisis of 1991, events of may 91, op meghdoot, the Bhopal tragedy
Fantastic videos by Sehekhar , on spot and relavant !
Please make an episode on mutinies that happened in the Indian army post bluestar operation, we don't know much about it apart from the incident at the Sikh regimental centre Ramgarh.
My respect for Tavleen Singh has grown after I listened to the last two episodes. 🙏
I'm sure she'll not mind if I thank you. She is one of the most formidable reporter-journalists of our time...thank you for writing in, best wishes...Shekhar
My respect has hit rock bottom for her (Anti-Sikh)
I thought we were in a time loop, seeing today’s CTC yesterday itself.
Rajiv Gandhi killed sikhs in Delhi but darbari media romanised him.dint asked him any hard questions.
Agreed 1984 was one of the most turbulent years that I know. General Sundarji was one of the finest Generals India has produced.
Really enjoying this series. Please keep this on ...
Looking forward to your story about op black thunder...
Also sir, please tell us more about Op cactus and Indian relation with Maldives
Really enjoyed this episode!
All issues are created to divert attention from Adani crimes. Keep temper of people high , divide & rule
Great to listen to again and again!. Shekarji, I have a suggestion... Why don't you call these officers, journalists and others and have discussion on these subjects or interesting things they have done in their life. It would be great to listen to.....
Incredible stories and effort!
A CTC on Rajasthan doctors protest is required
India should have asked for justice for in84 sikh genocide.. congress party should be held responsible...
Amazing way to give us a view on the fateful year of 1984
Fascinating, again. Thank you.
Gen. Sundarji used to write a column in The Hindu, Generally Speaking. He would share many incidents from his vast experience.
Very interesting stories. A deep dive of Op meghdoot will be great, there isn’t much on that.
This is the most fun CTC ep i've watched
Also, this is just a suggestion
But you can use 'john harris' or 'vox' type graphics
This may help you in increasing your view counts
Thus series in 1984 has become big hit for sg
I read a book written by General Sunderji. It described his experience in Africa. To understand the true scene in disturbed places in Africa where Sunderji was posted, I found it very interesting. It described escape of a war criminal by paying small bribe

Once again.
Super impressed.
What life you have lived shekhar sir.
You are nothing sort of a legend 🙂🙂
Fabulous reporting 🫡 keep it up
I work in tech and make more money what SG is making entire year. But seeing how SG has lived his life I feel depressed about mine.
Me too.... He is making Journalism cool.
Exactly my thought. I make good money in IT but lead an extremely mundane life. SG has on the other hand lived an extremely eventful life.
Awesome reporting .
Excellent !
What an episode....the police station scene was right out of a movie screenplay
Yes, it really was...thank you for watching. And thank you also for your support...best wishes, Shekhar

Dear team, can you please invest in high quality audio equipment
Please also do an episode on Hindu killings during Punjab terrorism times, to cover all sides on this issue
Thank you for your bravery
