I could listen to Haley singing an old phone book, and this song is no exception. However, her approach is very close to the original this time, and more of a tribute to Grace Slick than a display of Haley’s creativity. I appreciate this very much, it shows both taste and respect.

I never thought that anyone could do justice to Grace Slick's eternal original version of one of my all-time favorite songs. But this amazing performance by the beautiful and megatalented HR had me flipping between this and the original... and I'm so torn I'm just gonna call it a tie!

Someone said earlier that Haley is so good that she should be singing in sold out stadiums. I disagree, I think she is much better than that. I think she feeds off the small crowds of 600 or less which adds to the intimacy of her music.
Her tiny crowds are a testament to the mediocrity of her career due to her own piss poor management.
How do they get the vocal so clean without the bleed through from the the instruments? She even turns her head and it sounds the same. Magical microphone.

Paul, Marty, Skip Spence, and Spencer Dryden have all passed so unfortunately there aren't enough members left to form a full band. I saw them in 1970 at a college and Grace couldn't hit the last notes of White Rabbit so she just yelled "Fuck It" instead through the mic. Haley sings the heck out of this. She's a much better vocalist than Grace ever was.
This was by far the best I have heard Haley sing White Rabbit. But then it is not surprising, as Haley consistently improves/refines songs the more she sings them.
Jorma and Jack are still around. I would love to see Haley sit in with their band Hot Tuna sometime.
I used to hang out at the Fillmore a lot in the mid sixties and was a big Airplane fan, especially in the early years of the band. I was there in October of ‘66 when Marty announced that their “girl singer,” Signe Anderson, was leaving the group. She had a small child and didn’t think it was fair to subject it to life on the road. Much of the audience was shocked and disappointed, but Bill Graham gave her a big send off as the band finished off the set with Tobacco Road (which they never did again as respect for Signe) and High Flying Bird. Grace replaced Signe the next day. It has been reported that Grace was not their first choice, as they were looking for a singer to fit in and sound as much as possible like Signe. Friction eventually developed in the band as Grace became prominent and challenged Marty as the lead singer.
Years later, in an interview, Grace admitted that her main vocal asset was loudness. She laughed that she couldn’t even sing a lullaby to her daughter.
Haley has so many more vocal skills compared to Grace. Her genres include jazz, rock, blues, pop. She can skat, yodel, whistle. She has great range and refined technique. She can vocally imitate musical instruments and do creative runs. She can improvise and is superb with call and response. She is a songwriter.
Grace gave up singing years ago and instead pursued art.
Besides White Rabbit, Haley has also sung Somebody to Love with her parents’ band, Midnight. I would love to hear Haley do some more Airplane songs. I am especially fond of some of the earlier songs, including Signe’s Chauffeur Blues and High Flying Bird.
I might add that ironically Signe and Paul Kantner died on the same day, both at the age of 74.
Correction: It was Chauffeur Blues, not Tobacco Road, that the audience requested and that Signe sang as a send off. The band retired this song in respect for her. I wrote this when I was half asleep.

She sounded prettier than the original but I didn't get the same haunting acid trip vibe. And the haunting sound is what makes it for me. But damn she's good. Like crazy good.
Well Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane was a major star in the 60s 70s and 80s so of ci=ourse she gave off a trippy and high rendition, she was probably stoned.
Sometimes covers just don't do justice to the original. This was great though. Nice job!
