  • In this video I show you a powerful note-taking system called QCE and how to set it up in Tana.
    This system is based on Prof. Joel Chan's work:

    This looks awesome! I’ll just note a couple things about my own usage of QCE:
    - Sometimes the topic of a question is another question. Sometimes claims support other claims. So generally just bearing in mind that although the general flow is Evidence -> Claims -> Questions, the flow isn’t exact.
    - I like to have two numerical fields on my claims - credibility (how much I believe it) and importance (even if true, how much does it matter?). I don’t fill them out on every claim, and I don’t think calculations based on it are really the move. They’re meant to be little subjective guides. If I look at a claim in the future and realize my credibility score was all off, I know I should look at its connections to find ramifications.
    - Each of the tags extend a #discourse tag so I can search all Discourse nodes with LINKS_TO a subject, so it will bring up inline references to the subject or references within fields of the discourse node

    It would be nice to show also how to combine the Zettelkasten approach with the QCE. Here we see how you have prepared a plain node called Synthesis indented in the #question. There is an interesting mapping exercise between reference/source notes, literature notes, zettels or atomic notes and cluster/hub notes.

    QCE系统:Question + Claim + Evidence
    江sir的理解:
    1. Question

    With the power of supertag and search node, tana will be incredibly powerful.

    What is the difference between "to process for" and "to integrate for"? Also, does "integrated for" just mean "done"?

    Thank you, this was a great walkthrough/use-case examples of ancestry, inheritance and auto-initialization, which were some of the trickier aspects for me to understand about supertags in Tana.

    can you give an example of how to use this? do you start within a source, or do you start taking notes within a question (given the topic tag)?

    Hi @cortexfuturatools, I just read through the paper that you linked to. Just to make sure I am understanding, what Prof. Chan calls "Observation" note, you call evidence, what he calls "Synthesis Note" you call a claim (since it is supported or opposed by the observation notes), is that correct? Prof: Chan even has a picture from his Roam notes where he writes "Synthesis Note (Claim)".

    Hi Lukas! Why do you often times use lowercase tags ("quote") and other times sentence case tags ("Question"), etc? What is the rule or logic you are using to determine what case to use for each different purpose? Thanks

      They announced on Twitter that after a few weeks of backend work they're now going through the waitlist again - but the waitlist reaches (apparently) until 2021, and they are going chronologically. Hope they'll publish a number or something at some point :)

    This does really show the potential of Tana! How superior is referencing, let's say claims, in an instance field instead of just block referencing with a @?

  • @KevinDangoor
    @KevinDangoor ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Great video! Thanks!
    One question: it seems more straightforward to have a hierarchy of Topic/Question/Claim/Evidence with sources being the only thing outside of the hierarchy. How common would it be to have e.g. a question that cuts across multiple topics?

    • @cortexfuturatools
      @cortexfuturatools  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on how you write the topics. You could have a question that covers both "Nuclear Energy" and "Government Regulation", for example :)

  • @CanSF
    @CanSF ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great video! How do you handle conflicting claims? My current system doesn’t have evidence, only claims of various levels (where a highly likely claim is basically evidence) but they can oppose/support other claims.

    • @cortexfuturatools
      @cortexfuturatools  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I haven't implemented this yet, but I plan to add fields like "generalizes","contradicts", etc. that relate claims to each other and a field that tracks how likely the claim is in my opinion.
      All optional so as to not overwhelm the process with admin

    Do you know if there's a way to force Tana to reload, or more specifically, to force Tana to reload what a node inherits from a supertag? I seem to have encountered a glitch and not sure how to resolve it. After setting up the searches in the Question supertag like you showed, the first question only shows the first search (Synthesis Material > Related Claims), while the rest of the questions show all of the searches created in that supertag. I guess I could delete the node, re-enter it, re-tag it as a question, but then I'd have to go back throughout everything else that references it to re-enter it there as well. Hopefully I don't have to do that and there's a simpler method as that would be a headache to have to remember and do every time there's a glitch like that 😂

    I’m using zettelkasten and also set up QCE…
    Know I’m not sure what to tag as literature notes vs claims?

    • @oliclarke
      @oliclarke ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured it out. I use literature notes and claims separately. I read through literature notes or permanent notes and find claims, where I find a claim I tag it as claim.
      I also use a quote tag however I make it an extension of literature notes because quotes can be literature notes although we try to avoid quoting too much.
      I follow the same process when looking for evidence. read through literature notes (which includes quotes) and possibly permanent notes to find evidence which I tag as evidence.

    6:49 What's the distinction between "to process for" and "to integrate for"?

    • @cortexfuturatools
      @cortexfuturatools  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To process for -> read, take notes
      Integrate for -> Relate to claims and question, "prep for synthesis" if you will

    For those wondering, QCE is an acronym for Question, Claim & Evidence. I always wish abbreviations where spelled out unless you know for sure that your audience already knows such info.

    TL/DV; Introduces a note-taking technique called QCE (Question, Claim, Evidence) and demonstrates how to implement it in the note-taking app Tana.
    QCE helps structure thinking and synthesizes information for a deeper understanding of any topic.
    #### Highlights
    - 📚 QCE (Question, Claim, Evidence) is a powerful method for note-taking.
    - 🏛 Tana is a useful app for implementing QCE.
    - 💡 QCE helps identify gaps in understanding and gather evidence to support or oppose claims.
    - 🤔 Questions are the starting point for research.
    - 💡 Claims are possible answers to questions.
    - 📖 Sources provide evidence to support claims.
    - 🔍 Live searches in Tana help organize and access related claims and sources.
