    This topic is fascinating. society doesn't need most people to work 8 hours a day. And it doesn't even need us to work the same job year-round. That's more cultural than necessary. In fact, we're working long and hard and to destroy ourselves and our future. If we consumed less and produced less the Earth could recover and so could we. Who knows how we might grow with more time, autonomy and cooperation?

      I love this comment... This is what it is about. Collective thinking that brings improvement to the current circumstances. I couldn't agree more, as we have built a system around work overtime that isn't conducive to how humans should be able to perform in a work setting. We should aim, like you said, to consume and produce less, but the difficult part is having that idea resonate with the grander public. But I love the idea of cooperation, we need each other to make this work. Thanks so much for the comment!

    science = "the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained."
    Social science absolutely is measurable.

    • @Lurning-Curve
      @Lurning-Curve  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree with you that it is measurable. Where a lot of people would disagree is when we would say that it is as measurable as the hard sciences, ergo the discussion whether social sciences can be seen as real "science". Nonetheless, I believe in social sciences as being part of the world of science in their own right.

    I work as a PhD student in engineering. It's the same for me, it doesn't make sense to work for 8 hour days. I do get a lot out of going to the office and discussing things with coworkers, but doing so for 8 hours straight would be impossible. Even with breaks it is hard to do deep work consistently after some time.

      I couldn't agree more! It is very inefficient if we look at the overall levels of cognitive performance we are able to output per day. In most cases, this comes nowhere near 8h per day. Thank you so much for the contribution!

    China: casually releases state of the art LLM as a side project
    Meanwhile Europe: this guy
    That's why we're heading for irrelevance.
    For sure it's not cool to work 8, 12, 14 hours a day.
    It is exhausting.
    But it's certainly possible and definitely CAN be more efficient.

      Although China's performance in this context could be seen as "better", we also have to look at the quality of life. Like you said, it's definitely possible to work 8 or more hours per day, even in an efficient way, but this is not true for the bigger part of the world population because our brains just couldn't keep up with this way of working. Is it really so bad to try and think of ways of working that could be more conducive to how our brains and bodies work? I am not advocating for comfort, rather for meaningful change in how we approach work.

      @@Lurning-Curve And this is a noble cause. I get that. I think fighting for better QoL for everyone is a great thing to do. The problem is that while we're focused on that we're losing the position to change anything meaningful. That's because others are optimizing for profit and innovation rather for the good of their people. At the end of the day might makes the right in the world and there's no way around it. The stronger will always have it their own way. We were just very lucky the stronger during the last century were representing decent values.
      Yea, your reasoning here is good. The intentions are pure. But to just demand this when Europe is already falling behind is kinda... childish?

    • @freddythescnd

      Sometimes doing what fulfills somebody doesn’t pay the bills. You’ll go poor chasing your dream if it doesn’t make you money off the bat; some people are not willing to make that risk… rightfully so.

    • @Chrisratata
      @Chrisratata 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @freddythescnd you seem to be assuming that fulfillment is only possible by chasing a dream job that requires either self-started entrepeneurship or low-to-no paying grunt work, and that simply isn't the case. There are plenty of decent paying careers that could be rewarding to tons of people if it wasn't for so much of society's inherent mindset to hate school and work - insisting that school is a waste of time then slacking off because of it only builds habits that carries over into the workplace in adulthood.
      Bottom line, my original point is that people only think 8hrs is bs because they hate work. Making it 5 or 6 might feel like a massive relief for some time but would eventually still expose the same core hatred and lack of work ethic for a lot of people.
      Until that core issue is addressed...coupled with the large degree that, YES, tons of companies and corporations do exploit employees and use them expendably...then the length of the workday is going to be largely irrelevant.
      [throws away soapbox]

      Thank you for your comment. I understand that this video came across as just complaining, but the deeper point of the video is that it is not conducive to how human brains work to set a time on how much mental energy you should use per day. If you feel capable or excited to work 8 or more hours a day, then that's the ideal situation and I would optimise for that. However, not everyone always has the opportunity to do work that fulfils them. Besides, I am not at all advocating that I hat work. I just don't believe, based on the recent research, that this is the most optimal way of going about work in a creative capacity.

    • @Lurning-Curve
      @Lurning-Curve  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I agree with the fact that hating school or work is a core issue that needs to be solved. But that can only be solved if we recognise that society pushes people into jobs that they don't like to begin with. Work should be accompanied by a feeling of fulfilment in the context of feeling proud to be able to mean something to society. Sadly, that dynamic is completely gone in today's age, because we are just small pieces of charcoal that keep the engine running. I want nothing less than a future where everyone can work on things that bring them fulfilment. But how society is scructured currently, that is nowhere near the case. The value scale of work has completely shifted over the past few centuries. And not agreeing with 8h work days is not always because of a hatred towards work. The neuroscientific research tells us that this is not conducive to optimal workflow.

    • @freddythescnd
      @freddythescnd 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Chrisratata to go along with the comment above mine, I agree that the shortening of time will not help the major problem of disliking work and the system that causes this to be what must be endured… however, the assumption of fulfillment coming from a dream job in general was never a sentiment I shared. Fulfillment can come from anything-hobbies like art or music, creating family dynamics, even just experiencing new parts of life or therapy. My points stems from the fact that putting whatever percentage of physical, mental, and financial capabilities towards reaching certain goals within the field of your choosing can be a risk for living a stable life. It was never the amount of work time that I was focused on cause every real goal is gonna take a good amount of time to work to it… it’s about the trade-off you have to consider of it not working out

      I'm very sorry to hear that, maybe I should work on making the video a bit shorter. And I understand what you are saying, as it was more of a rant video. Although I don't give a concrete solution, I do talk about how research shows that this system is not sustainable at all, prompting us to question whether there are better ways to go about it. This is still something I am thinking about. I do mention, towards the end of the video, that it is possible for us to be happy without material success through mindfulness and self-awareness training, as there is enough proof to support that it is possible. But other than that, I am still not aware of any sustainable and widespread solution to the problem. I want to thank you for giving my video a shot though, and I really appreciate the feedback! I can work on this to make it more entertaining in the future :)

    Why is it necessary that people work at 100% capacity throughout the entire work day? Many (if not all) jobs require employees to complete tasks that do not require 100% full focus and attention. Assuming your stats are correct, it seems reasonable to ask someone to work for 4 hours with full focus on important tasks and then use the other 4 hours to complete less intensive work.
    Also at the end you come across without much humility when you say that we don't do enough work to figure out better ways of working. It's almost as if you're the first person to discover that work is hard for people. Many self employed people, entrepreneurs, athletes, and company owners have a huge stake in understanding how to structure their time and the time of anyone they hire or work with.

Sitting for 8 hours a day doing work is definitely not the must productive system for performance (Evidence and scientifically) However, Take a moment to check your position in this world... Go do construction/blue collar/labor work. Not only is their work physically harder, their situation is infinitely worse over the long term. (physical debilitation and disease). I listened to this and heard a person who has frustrations with the system. We all are. Enjoy your job when you can, understand that work is hard... work is work. It's not pleasant all the time.
