The study that the Fda claim caused rats to get cancer is BS. The gov't had to find a way to demonize sassafras because it contains safrole which is a precurser to MDMA
Gumbo File I believe, is what it is called. It's made from young Sassafras leaves that have been dried then powdered. Used for flavoring and thickening soups and stews.I like to make a tea from the root and then make that into a Sassafras syrup for ice creams or pancakes, etc.
My favorite walking stick is a 6 ft. piece of a sassafras sapling about 2" diameter at the large/top end, that I found washed out in a creek bed about five years ago (before I began using trekking poles), with both ends char-hardened in fire. I am holding it in my avatar picture. When I was young we used to dig Sassafras root in late autumn and early winter, wash and cut and split the wood into pieces about 1/4 inch by 4 to 6 inches, then tie it into bundles about 2 or 3 inches in diameter and sell the bundles for $1.00 each. Shavings from the pieces of sassafras root would be steeped in boiling water to make Sassafras Tea. BTW - Only cut root from trees 12 or more inches in diameter, never take more than one root per year from each tree, and rebury what is left to help prevent killing the tree.
Grew up drinking sassafras tea and miss it so much! Born in WV, in OH now, but I'm feeling more confident that I can find it again now! Thanks! :) Happy Trails!
I always cut sassafras root with my step mom's mother who was a herb doctor and midwife in the south. I've made sassafras tea and rootbeer in the past. I read the report on it..never drink alot of it for that reason..but its a wonderful tree. Nice to see someone enjoys it as much as I do. Great show. :) Natural rootbeer was used as a stomatic..helps my tummy alot. :)
Karen S I believe grandma cut it up into bits and also powdered it..I remember see it both ways..I'm not sure if she boiled or seeped the tea..she'd have it made before we got up in the morning. :) It used to also come in liquid form to add to hot water. My friend Lynette and I used bits and boiled the herbs for rootbeer. Been awhile since I used it. Got the idea from a homesteader magazine long ago. :)
The dried leaf power is called file -- the E has an accent (pronounced FEE-lay). Excellent in gumbos. Referenced by Jerry Lee Lewis - Jambalaya (On The Bayou).
Great video! One of my favorite trees. Super easy to identify, and all the benefits! When I'm out hiking I use a young branch I've chewed on (like you did) to brush my teeth!
Thanks for the good info. When we were kids and anyone was digging like a house foundation or something we would catch the smell of sassafras roots and pick them out and taste them. My daddy showed us.
Have heard about this in old history movies of the 18th century and 19th century accounts and just today found a four foot sapling in among some volunteer trees that sprang up in the corner of our yard. The huge lobed leaves caught my eye!
Great Video, I learn so much from your videos and really look forward to the next one, they are always great and informative............ty for sharing the knowledge
Where are you from, David? I always used to hike with my Dad and we loved finding sapsarilla-soda?? trees. My fav trees in the world. The mitten, the glove and the oblong one. And yes, the root was especially Root Beer-like smelling. Yep!
make sassafras tea with the roots all the time. to make the file powder from the leaves take the whole branch and hang them leaves down is the traditional way.
OMG, I love Sassafras! I used to use it as a kid with my mom and granny. I was wondering if there are any tree's in Montana? I have never seen any here but I did not really know how to identify them so I might have been right under one. LOL Thank you so much for sharing your wild edibles knowledge.
It's the Only tree with three types of leaves. Totally distinct leaves. One is oval but pointed, one is mitten shaped, and the third lol I forget....and as he said...they have smoothe margins. That means that around the edge of the leaf...the border of the leaf...is smooth...not wavy or jagged. Each of the three leaf shapes have smoothe margins.
we JUST figured out that the "dinosaur leaves" are sassafras! Went hiking and found them recently (its fall so the ground is covered with leaves!)-and I decided to figure out what it was! interesting video!
+2 Hoosier Hikers It's hard to say, but there are a lot of foraging groups in larger cities. I hear the local Audubon society is a great place to start
+2 Hoosier Hikers you could contact any of the experts with the Brown County Native Woodlands Project. They are all very knowledgable and put on great programming such a Nature Daze. www.bcnwp.org/nature-daze Check it out if you are in the area. Happy hiking!
I know about 10-15 edible types of mushrooms in my area. I'm sure there are more, I just have a lot to learn. Unfortunately with the snow coming, I don't think I'm going to find any more in Michigan this year. Hickory nuts are edible and could probably still be found in my area if the squirrels haven't gotten to all of them. Acorns are edible if leeched properly. Walnuts of course... There are several kinds in my area. But it will get harder from here on out with winter coming. If you are a bit south of Michigan, depending on your location, you may find chicken of the woods, hen of the woods, or even pheasant backs.
Thank you so much for explaining right away why it's labeled as a carcinogen. Someday the herbal myths will all be cleared up in the realm of "Science" also.
It's called "Filé." Make it myself during the fall when the leaves are naturally dried out. Sadly had to cut down the tree in my front yard because it was too close to the house and was a fire hazard during the winter time.
Shit we can live for ever> die happy he hee i love poke salad but its a poison if not boil and drained, washed off 2 x the 3rd time season and eat Better than SPINACH i love SPINACH Nope i did know this about SASSAFRAS TREES he hee i got a yard full of em. THANK YOU FOR SHARING
I'm 68yrs old and have drinking the tea every spring along with a lot of relatives and not one of us has ever had cancer of any type!
Dr. Dolittle you drank it only in spring,or it's only good in spring?
I'm am 68 years old and grew up on sassafras and we all love it.
@@chuckwh60 only in the spring. Grandmother said it thinned your winter blood.

Although I've never tried it, my mom often spoke of sassafras root tea as a spring tonic made by her grandmother.

My grandmother made sassafras tea when I was little.
Thank you for the knowledge

The leaves are ground into powder called "File" It is used in gumbos
The saffrol oil is mostly in the bark I believe, so it should be perfectly safe debarked like you did
where can I find a local expert to consult before eating wild edibles?

Holiday Inn Express😂
I live in Indiana. Probably my last full year...so if you need a guide near the Mich/IN border...let me know.
It is fall now so do you know anything about edible mushrooms and nuts? I know chestnuts are very nice and I can identify a few mushrooms.

I used it allot for partying or with friends at home. 15- 30 Gram and boiled 20 min. Same effect as MDMA, just a little bit lighter.
file powder made from sausages leaves "File Gumbo"
Mark in Texas
+Mark Martin That's it! I couldn't remember the name for some reason :-)
+David's Passage Sassafras! Silly spell check! :-)
Good tooth brush too
i have a tree that has the leaf with 3 lobes its only that leaf looked similar to this on but it doesnt have the other two leafs
It MUST have the other two types of leaves on it.
*in order to be a sassafras tree...it will have all three leaf types on each branch.
I've drank a ton of tea by boiling the root and adding sugar. Taste a lot like root beer candy
Hello, thanks, Im seing you'r a Real american !!!🙂 Great.
Thank you so much for explaining right away why it's labeled as a carcinogen. Someday the herbal myths will all be cleared up in the realm of "Science" also.

My grandpa drank it his whole life he died when he was 98
Thanks
We put a fresh cut of Sassafras wood on top of our hot wood burning stove to fill the house with that lovely aroma.
I always made sassafrass tea
i think the real reason sassafras was banned was bc of saffrole's primary role in the creation of MDMA, or ecstacy
There were no regulations on harvesting and the entire species was in danger of becoming extinct which is why it was no longer used for root beer.
I thought you make root beer from birch
The fact it’s labeled a carcinogen makes my intuition scream CURE!
I just ate 1 mg of sassafras pure crystal will.i feel.it
Stuff the leaves with sausage. yum
The leaves smell lemony to me
Taste good with boiling and maple syrup
wish I was a chemist
So crazy math is all over nature. 1, 2 , 3, fingered leaf.
File' Gumbo
Pronounced "Fee Lay"
Smells like The Simple Green Cleaner
File`
Spock leaf
