- Join me as we tackle the iconic Jacob’s Ladder loop in the Peak District - a ride that embodies the biblical concept of choosing the path of most resistance for maximum mental and physical growth.
this is the first a series of Best UK Winter Rides to help you find awesome places that ride super well through the winter months to stave of the winter blues and Christmas chub!
We had the incredible opportunity to connect with and be expertly guided by Jonathan from @MTB_Derbyshire whose excellent TH-cam channel showcases the best MTB adventures the Peak District has to offer. His knowledge, passion, and expertise made this ride not only enjoyable but unforgettable. Be sure to check out Jonathan’s fantastic content, including his own edit of the Jacob’s Ladder loop - a ride that MTB enthusiasts won’t want to miss!

It's not a small ride at 18 miles and 3,200 feet of climbing but its definatley tougher that it looks on paper. I think this is because the descents are physical and require your full attention so they dont feel like much of a break from the climbing efforts.
In the “mindful moment” I reflect on why MTB riders are drawn to the hard path, much like the biblical journey of Jacob’s Ladder.
It’s not just about the physical challenge - it’s about personal growth, resilience, and pushing ourselves weekly to face fresh challenges.
If you’ve ever wondered why MTB riders seek out the toughest climbs and epic trails, this one’s for you. Get ready for a ride filled with stunning Peak District landscapes, challenging climbs, and the reward of reaching new heights - both physically and mentally.

Top video! There really is tons of effort going in to this edit Jon....rewarded as it's fantastic. The drone footage looks so atmospheric up on Kinder. Great to meet you two and glad you ejoyed it. I even provided a free crash caught on camera moment. Its basically a given from me that, it will happen at some point during a ride 🤣
Thank you Jonathan, we loved watching your version of events! So much fun doing a collab edit and what a fantastic day on the bikes it was - superb!
Thanks again for the guiding and the good vibes! 🙌
@MindfulTrailBiker always fun to see how different people capture different things and bring a different feel to things. 😎
Definitely mate!
Great video, and one of the last great natural routes in England.
I do worry about erosion though, a lot of the trail does seem very much worn down.
Thank you, yes it’s amazing! It’s my first time around the loop so I’ve no comparison. Happy new year! 🙌
🙌🏻 I’ve got the same Mint Sauce top cap on my bike! The one that says ‘nothing to see here, the trails up there’! I love Jacob’s ladder, my favourite ride, the downhills are incredibly grin inducing 😁 3:44
Cracking edit of a classic route, feels like you’ve done 30 mile afterwards it’s a tough one.Loved the drone footage and looked a great day out.Even better in the summer but then the multitude of walkers slow you down lol. Jonathan is a fine lad to ride with and passionate about mtb ing. Difficult to find a better route in the Peaks.
Evening Paul, thank you very much for the kind words! we can’t believe tree haven’t rode it before given the magnitude of its fame! It’s a superb day in a bike.
Jonathan is a true gent, we loved riding with him!
Thank you! 🙏
You're right Paul it is ace in summer but it dues provide a great winter option. Thing is you're proper hard core you always ride your HT. Lovely comment....the cheque is in the post. We need to get out in the new year for you to demoralise my sense of fitness 🤣👍
🤣🤣
Super cool video mindful trai

Thanks Buddy! Still hoping we will get you out soon Mini mindful! 👊
One of my favourite loops, always make a point of riding it every June or July for the last 30 years or so although we have always set of from castleton. Top video.
That’s buddy! It’s an incredible loop, can’t believe I haven’t done it before. As stated, I blame the dog 🤣
I'm very impressed with your drone footage. It adds so much to the edit. I've just got the same and am looking forward to many adventures next year.
Appreciate That Bob Thank you very much! its a great little drone, so versatile and there’s no excuse not to take it due to the size. brilliant piece of kit - enjoy!
What an absolute brilliant video that was, epic, loved the drone footage too, my only gripe is i wasn’t there 😩🤣 maybe next time 👍🏻
Thank you mate! Appreciate that!
Let’s remedy that and get out in the new year! 🙌
Great video guys, loving the drone footage which adds so much perspective. This rides definitely on my bucket list!

Followed your route on Boxingday, had a great time with cloud inversion lasting all day giving incredible scenic views.
Morning! That excellent, glad you enjoyed it and very happy if the edit inspired you to ride it! Thank you for the message! 🙏
🙌🏻 I’ve got the same Mint Sauce top cap on my bike! The one that says ‘nothing to see here, the trails up there’! I love Jacob’s ladder, my favourite ride, the downhills are incredibly grin inducing 😁
@@reubenarmitage1497 it’s so cool, free with the MBUK magazine many years ago, I love it. Jacob’s ladder is incredible, loved it! Thanks for getting in touch and for watching! 👍
That looks solid. Quite fancy giving it a bash. Great edit buddy. Lots of work in that 👌
Would be a pleasure to pass on the new knowledge of the route Mr pidge. This and a day at win hill is a winning combo weekend! Thank you buddy. Was challenging and fun to put together if not a bit frustrating with the mic gremlin tapping noise - grrrrrrr
I'm available for free guided tours 😜
I'm always available for a guided tour 😎👍
@MTB_Derbyshire cheers mate 👍

Need to do jacobs again. Last time was on my fully rigid fat bike and it surprisingly coped pretty well
@@paulelsey2486 it’s a great loop isn’t it! I’m always surprised at how capable fat bikes appear to be!
Hope to do this route again in the next couple of weeks it is a classic .
Absolute blast of a ride isn’t it! We loved it! Can’t wait to dot it again soon.
It’s a yess from me 🎉🎉
So far….
@ex3dy813 took the words right out of my mouth, my bread and butter riding, now in competition with off-piste enduro (when weather allows) but XC rocky tech with great views always in my heart. So lucky to have the Peak District, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales in day trip distance, spoilt for this kinda riding. Jacobs Ladder defo makes my Top 3 Peak District rides. Love the drone views in this edit 😃
Yeh I’m really starting to get the taste for Rocky tech a bit more now, between this and borrowdale bash recently, definitely finding my feet (pedals) 😂❤
I’m gonna do this one again soon i think , loved it
Thanks Annes! always appreciate your support! we will be seeking out these types of rides through winter! perhaps you’d like to guide us on 1 as your somewhat an expert at these routes?
@@MindfulTrailBiker LOL dunno about expert but I do like researching, mapping and exploring these kinda routes. Would love to ride with you guys again, sure we can arrange something.
Awesome we will make it happen in the new year 🙌
Love the Jacobs loop 😍 great video and riding as usual 💯👏
Cheers Mark! Always appreciate your kind words buddy! It’s a cracker isn’t it. Gonna ebike it next time!
@MindfulTrailBiker yeah an ebike esp if wet as it can be quite boggy in places which can be energy zapping for sure!
I did this route a few weeks back, brutal in places but a great ride nonetheless.
It’s absolutely fantastic isn’t it! superb Descents, Great scenery, wits not to like!
That climb up Kinder is horrific 😂🤮😱 but it's well worth it as you found out mate. Great views around there too, and some belting descents. Lovely guy is Jonathan, and knows his routes! Great edit.
Thanks man, appreciate it! Yeah it’s a tough one but very much worth it. One of them rides where your knackered half way through 😂 Jonathan’s a gent and a fine guide!
@MindfulTrailBiker never done it from where you started tbh, always started at Rushup and been dead by Kinder 🤣🤣
@@MTB_Trekker eh up Phil. If you start at Hayfield you get the worst climb out the way first and at the end you get the full campsite descent back into Hayfield. It's win win. Lovely comment btw stop it I'm blushing 😁
@@MTB_Derbyshire only speaking the truth pal!
@MTB_Trekker top man 😎
It’s a yesss from me🎉🎉
So far…
Defo more to explore!
Nice to see it from this angle I watched the other video. Got a route map?
Cheers man! You can download the gpx file from garmin connect website. It’s a very well known route so should be plenty on-line you can find 👍
I am in Scotland so GT, Inners, Yair etc and all the great stuff around Central, Borders and Stirling/Perth are within easy reach - but I am always looking for trips a wee bit further afield so love seeing your vids like this. Your Mindful Moments are great and it's fast becoming one of my top few MTB channels to watch :) But, whatever is the clacking noise? Camera strap or mount? It's spoiling the ASMR of tyre on gravel :D A minor grumble.
Love your work guys - I do appreciate the time and effort to do all the filming and get the drone footage. Keep doing what you do!
Thank you so much buddy! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! Very kind words indeed! We will strive to keep you entertained, informed and hopefully inspired!
The clacking… bloody annoying isn’t it. I’ve moved over to a DJI mic clipped into the chesty, it wasn’t audible when riding or I would have fixed it so it’s coming from something super close to the mic. Either way I’ve moved to a larger chesty which should fix some stabilisation issues and the mic clack hopefully. 🤞
@MindfulTrailBiker I was watching a vid earlier, your buddy Street Pigeon, and I was wondering if AI audio tools could remove drone noise etc. my phone can edit audio to remove wind noise etc so there must be audio tools coming for that kind of stuff. More time editing though I guess :)
Would be nice to have the option to remove noises like this when they occur unexpectedly for sure. As mentioned it wasn’t an audible noise when riding. I’m sure the future is bright, the equipment now is so solid. Jamie’s latest edit from ten lakes is drop dead Gorgeous!!
You’re on my doorstep there 18 minutes to 21. First time i did that was in the early 80’s on one of orange’s bikes before they were called orange. It was a tushingham B52. Peter Tushingham the founder of orange bikes. I’m 72 now and still doing that loop.
But apparently I’m to old to drive according to the young and the government
Hi Neil, thank you for the message! Anyone who has completed that loop has my respect, but doing it on an 80’s built Hardtail is next level - so hats off to you sir!
I’m so glad to hear your enjoying your riding, I do a lot of longevity based training in the hope that I can keep riding like yourself long after I’ve finished the day job! Sorry to hear about the driving, though it sounds like you live in a great spot and I’m my opinion it’s overrated a no where near as much fun as it used to be
Done this about 4 times, there's some brutal rocky climbs, wouldn't do it without an E Bike now!
Aye it’s a solid ride, great combination of all the things that makes MTB ace! Would defo like to try it in the eeb!
I’ve done it many times and the climbs are brutal 😮
@@robkillick7050 they just keep coming at you on that ride don't they!! - cracking loop though, loved it!
@@robkillick7050 Gotta love a good brutal climb from time to time though eh 😅
Just a thought. Routes in different platforms may help viewers engage with channel like Trailfinder TH-cam channel.. unless u have a garmin u can’t download.. great vid.. pat
Hi Pat, cheers buddy.
You can download as a gpx which is universal and should work with most routing apps. 👍
@@MindfulTrailBikermust just be me pal.. when u link to it will only download if u Hav garmin account.. will try again thanks for reply 👍
You can create a garmin connect account for free without linking a watch etc. then go to the route, click the cog in right top corner and select export gpx voila! 👍
In an email the file to you if you like
@@MindfulTrailBikerthanks will do. Appreciated 👍
Hi, what drone did you use to record it?
Hey there, thanks for the comment, I used the DJI Neo. a combination of the auto features for follow and used the RC controller for the scenery shots. Its a very cool piece if kit and inexpensive by usual drone standards.
@ thank you very much, great video and great shots.
Thank you, much appreciated! 🙏 there’s a learning curve to getting the best footage, if you get one, get in touch and I’ll pass on a few tips
@@MindfulTrailBikermany thanks , I will do! All the best!
