- After looking around TH-cam there is barely any content on scrambling in the Peak District! Hopefully this video will fill this gap.
If anyone is interested in some of these routes and looking for a bit more detail, some more in depth videos may be on the way!
This is the first time I've made this sort of video so any thoughts/ideas would be really appreciated in the comments.

Did Wildboarclough for the first time last week. Really enjoyed the experience.
Excellent video. Brilliant structure! The book alone doesn’t quite describe the levels. Was going to try wildboar clough first but I’ll definitely go for a grade one now.
Brilliant video! I'd add Grindsbrook Clough to this list. It was my first scramble as an 18 year old keen hiker and is brilliant fun. Easy technical difficulty (grade 1 at the most) but just the right length and views backwards are stunning, as is the beautiful waterfall area you scramble up - would recommend even to experienced scramblers!
I've done a couple of grade 2s now, and my next plan is Elbow Ridge as it looks incredibly fun.
Also agree with your mindset about it being easy climbing without the technicalities of ropes. I'm a V5-V6 gym boulderer but not yet bothered to get into outdoor rope climning because it just seems like a bit of a "faff" to get into. Scrambling can be a great activity without the need for rope (in good conditions of course), and gives you the fun tactile feeling of bouldering, the excitement of exposure, without the need to faff about with gear.
Brilliant video 👏👍 I didn't think there was much scrambling in the Peaks but these look fantastic - can't wait to give some of them a go. Thanks for the great video and detailed info!
I great video highlighting some of the Peak Districts gems. The only thing I'd add is where you mentioned checking the weather on the day, I'd also check the weather for a few days leading up as well to give you an idea of the ground conditions.
Yes mate some excellent advice especially on gully scrambles, thanks!
This is amazing and I showed this to some members of my family who I thought might be interested in it and it made one of them want to start scrambling
Excellent footage of these splendid landscapes!
Thanks - some great routes
Yes sir climbing rocks 😊
Great video and well put together. Incudes some new takes on familiar locations for me to explore, nice one 🙌
Also Matterhorn ridge next to elbow ridge and some other bits on the other side of the valley too. Also some other ridges in Cavedale too round the corner.
Not tried matterhorn yet, will definitely give it a go at some point. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Super helpful and well put together.
Helpful and interesting. Many thanks for sharing.
What cracking video Archie. I must admit to my shame that in all my years of hill walking/scrambling I have favoured the Lake District more than anywhere else. I have (sadly) viewed Derbyshire from a car window having failed to see it on foot as the gem it truly is. I am in awe of you and our gorgeous April. Message to self - get the f**k to Derbyshire next year. Cheers Uncle George xx
I absolutely love the lake district, it's just miles away! Thanks for the kind comments :)
Snowdonia has much better routes if you haven’t tried them. Especially for scrambling.
Nice video, Archie. I've had some of my best days out on Peak grit scrambles.
great guide thanks
Great vid. Surprised Kinder Downfall itself isn't in there. Get it on a dry day and it's great fun.
Yeah downfall looks epic its on my tick list, I've not managed to catch it fully dry yet!
I would recommend having a crack at square chimney opposite arpeggio if you haven't yet. Theres a couple of nice pitches.
Cracking scramble, Ive not done it for years. Might be time for a revisit
Great video Archie, I too have been steadily making my way through that Cicerone Dark Peak Scrambles... Have you been to Alderman's rocks next to Dovestone? There is some amazing variety there, but hard route finding, it's easy to stray on to a diff/ v/diff trad route
Great, well presented video mate. Next time you're headed out the lakes give me a shout and we'll head up climbers traverse and great slab on bowfell (if you haven't already been up :) ) (P.S. it's cousin James)
What a good advert for the peak district, its my favourite scrambling area. you can hit 1, 2, or 3 different scrambles in a day as they are quite close together. especially kinder scout area.
i have been there and only seen one or two people some days really adds to the solitude.
wilderness gully east is more of a day out if you follow the chew brook to the start point.
can i recommend shining clough and oaken clough two very different scrambles.
ta, maf.
Nice.
Sadly 2 climbers died in an avalanche in wilderness gully Jan 1963. This together with another tragedy on Bleaklow in 1964 was instrumental in the Peak District Mountain Rescue becoming better organised.
Wilderness Gully is great fun in the winter when its iced up.
I've been eyeing it up for a while, I feel like it's more of a challenge driving there on the woodhead pass!
@@archieberesford47 After a good cold snap it can ice up from top to bottom. Definitely thankful for 2 axes on the pitch near the top.
Also I found it more pleasant to cut through the woods at the boathouse and follow the Brook up rather than going by the road.
I've done plenty of scrambles in the Peaks, lakes and Wales, but i would actually love to learn to use rope. I'm in Manchester, if you would be ever willing to guide me with a rope.
check out Napes needle , Great Gable, some epic scrmbling on alot of the routes
Interesting video, was it you wearing the Simond B2s? If so what do you think of them?
They are a really good boot for the price, perfect for getting into summer scrambling and maybe some light winter stuff too.
I upgraded to Scarpa Mantas recently which are better, but not double the price better. 👍
Having done a bit in the peaks, it just doesn’t offer the same experience as climbing in Snowdonia.
The difficulty in the peak climbs comes from wet, greasy, slippery, rock… not from massive exposure.. no sustained scrambling linking grade3 together.. head to the Ogwen valley and tackle the cneifion and link to dolmen ridge, then head back down the gribin ridge or devils kitchen to tackle Idwal buttress… and any number of routes up Tryfan..
don’t get me wrong, the peaks has its place for walking/fell running, but for a day of scrambling get in your car and drive a couple of hours..
good informative video though my friend… 👍🏻🕊️
The peak, not the peaks!!!
Cheers Mark
they all look dreadful. Much better to just solo the easy mods on the main crags.
Or go to North Wales if you want real scrambling
arpeggio gulley is a 3 star climb
Not done the others but Elbow ridge is a great little route, short but exciting.
