Recently checked out your videos since the Samsung g7, and been very interested in what monitor will be your daily driver. The G7 I really want to like it, and the reviews on G5 are limited and you have done the best g5 re review so far
Got my G5 on prime day a few days ago and it replaced my LG 34 ultrawide 1080p 75hz. It's a pretty big upgrade for me and 144hz feels so much smoother than 75hz even in every day tasks like scrolling through Reddit. G-Sync works like a charm with my 1070 thru displayport and so far I have no complaints at all. Tested out a few games with G-Sync on and did not see any flickering issues like people described on the G7. It did take me 2 days to calibrate it to my liking but after I got it just right everything looks fantastic. The curve did catch me off-guard though, since my ultrawide was only a flat panel. My eyes finally adjusted after a day of usage and now I can't imagine going back to a flat panel. Like many said, there aren't a lot of reviews out on the G5 and yours helped me pull the trigger on a great deal, thank you!
HDR 10 isn't HDR600, Nor is it HDR1000, HDR 10 essentially just means it can interpret a hdr signal. Peak Brightness of HDR10 is less than HDR400, which is 400 cd/m2(8 bit colour), Followed by hdr 600 at 600cd/m2, and 10 bit colour (which some term "True HDR"), then HDR1000, with 1000cd/m2 and local dimming. IE: this monitor has the bare minimum of what can be called "HDR". You seem great though! Other than that, it was a good review, keep going chief.
HDR 10 can be used in certain scenes while turning off in the next scene where is not required. It gives the director more artistic control in climatic scenes in a movie.
Not really. Minimum for HDR is HDR10. Which just means it can show or simulate 10 bit colour. HDR 400 is what is considered the minimum HDR spec as it has the brightness to allow some of the brighter areas to pop-out on the monitor. What people call "True HDR" is just HDR10 + HDR1000 because the monitor can simulate/show 10bit colour and has a brightness of 1000 nits to show extremely bright areas on the monitor. However the true measure of "True HDR" is HDR10, HDR1000 and a high contrast ratio with local dimming. The big issue with HDR is local dimming is in general pretty bad on all HDR monitors. So you either have an extremely bright HDR1000 monitor with washed out blacks or HDR 600 with darker light areas. The only way to get "True HDR" is for monitors to shift to being OLEDS, and I don't imagine that will happen until they fix burn-in.
So I purchased this monitor because of this review. With most reviewers I feel like they focus too much on the high end products and something like this will leave them feeling underwhelmed. I would obviously love to purchase the high end stuff but I’m excited to get this monitor in the next few days. Thank you so much!
I think context is important here, and for the amount of people comparing it to a G7 or another intermediate/higher end monitor, it's apples and oranges. I am coming from an LG 34" ultrawide flat 75hz, and I will say, the difference is substantial. The curve is great and the higher refresh rate has yielded a significantly improved experience reducing eyestrain. The benefits for this monitor are not just for gaming, but also for day to day work from home tasks. I am very happy with this and would recommend it to anyone who is going from a lower refresh, traditional flat screen.
Very true 👍🏻 At this point apples to apples though would mean comparing this to other monitors like the Pixio 27 advanced I reviewed, the KOORUO 34 inch ultrawide with a 1000R curve, the Sceptre c345b with 1000R curve etc. Lots of competition in the marketplace right now which is a good thing.

Depends on the angle. Straight on looks good but not as good as high end monitors. It’ll take tweaking in the panel settings and nvidia control panel to look good but default it doesn’t look that good.
4k uhd 144hz displayport cable, comes in 8k also really nice red laced cable. On ebay. I bought 4k and 8k versions just in case about 9 to 12 dollars each.
I have a RX 5600 XT Sapphire Pulse, I could not get it to work! Then I tested everything, and turns out all I needed was a HDMI cable for 4K and it worked
@@lynx8437 While it can run some games at 4k, I think what he means is that an hdmi cable advertised to work with 4k allowed this monitor to work. Presumably it was an HDMI 2.0 cable. Such a cable will work with 4k @ 60, but can also allow 120hz (or 144hz?) at 1440p. The monitor isn't 4k so it's all but certain that he's not running in 4k (there is a weird option to render at a higher resolution and then downscale, but people rarely use it).

The asus is 1080p and not 1440p like the G5 so if you’re after the higher resolution go with the G5. The 1060 won’t pump out the highest FPS for 1440p though.

FINALLY Upgrade from 60hz to this. I tried 75hz my wife told me if you going to upgrade then upgrade and BOY did I go big with this new monitor new sound system . Lol. Monitor is a beast just have to find the right setting.

great review! I have ordered Gigabyte M32Q that is a great monitor but day after seller told me monitor is sadly not available... So I was stuck for some time! I was afraid of all the bad reviews about VA panel monitor. Thing is i have very old 43 icnh Philips that is IPS but has insane input lag ... its probable due to 5 ms response time. I think this Samsung will do much better
Only reason I would go with 27 vs 32 would be the ppi. 27 would have higher ppi so text would look sharper if I need to do any sort of document work on the side. But for Gaming experience 32 would be sweet for 1440 and 144hz. Thanks for your time doing this review!
I gotthis monitor for my ps5. Its performance slaps! Ps5 does not support 2k resolution but this monitor upslace 4k resolution which is actually seen as 2k on ps5. Its tricky and works well!

@@1UpNerdcore Dude, I was actually wrong. I just brought this monitor home and it forces me down to 60hz whenever I enable HDR. Now I can't remember where I read that. Either way, my panel was plagued with the quality issues so many are complaining about. I switched back to my MSI for the time being. :(

@@danielanane246 the quantum dot film and the response times are a massive deal for image quality and movement clarity. 240hz is nice in any fast paced game competitive or otherwise. the g5 is 500ish bucks cheaper but it's also 500 bucks worse.

Hi Steven, I've seen so many negative reviews on Amazon about this monitor having ghosting & dark smearing issues. There is even a video on TH-cam showing UFO test that show large dark smearing. Obviously you haven't seen this with your unit, also the gameplay you showed looked fine. Is this due to adjusting the correct picture settings? Or is it likely a faulty unit if this occurs? I tried contacting Samsung but I've had no joy. Appreciate your input 👍🏻
I personally haven’t noticed anything. I think for some it will be faulty units and others it could be a need to tweak settings. As for the ufo test I think for general population the subtleties of those tests will not be noticeable but if you’re an enthusiast and game a lot it might be more noticeable.

Hey there, I am considering buying 3x of these 32-inch screens for a triple sim racing setup. I am a little worried about the reported ghosting issues (which I know you have already replied to in these comments). The main attraction is the 1000R curve of this model. The alternative would be the 165hz 1500R models from Gigabyte/AOC/Viewsonic etc, which seem excellent and have a few more features (and arguably better quality panels). Any thoughts on which route you would go? Essentially, does the curvature alone make up for the other shortfalls, when compared to monitors from the other manufacturers above? Does the Samsung brand name give any more comfort over the other brands at this price point? Thanks!

It's not even close to the G7 but as someone who has used a VA monitor after my old TN I literally can't find black smearing / ghosting even when looking for it. I do notice the bad contrasts on IPS monitors though. It's pretty cheap now a days during some sales.
When I hear people say in 2021 that "HDR is not where its suppose to be" I want to start choking myself. I am playing,recording and editing HDR content since 2016 when maybe then that statement could be somewhat true, but today ? I mean do people really have bad eyes ? Can't you see the crisp and realism HDR gives to video games ? take AC Origins, look at the sky, the details everything is so much more realistic and close to real life, take AC valhalla, the sky looks like its real, take any game you want, its better with HDR period.
Since that depends on the nits and things like local dimming being a factory saying “HDR isn’t where it’s supposed to be” has more to do with what the panel is calling HDR. 400 nits with no local dimming males for a subpar HDR experience. 1000nits with local dimming makes for an amazing HDR experience.
@@1UpNerdcore Well all in all the screen is horrible, both SDR and HDR, just returned it, pale colors, atrocious image noise, I have an AOC monitor in my office at home, the cheapest thing ever connected to my work laptop, it works 10 times better.
HDR10 is does not mean it has 1000nits brightness. that simply means it will accept an HDR signal. The actual brightness is only 350nits and not worth it to use the HDR function. The G7 is actually better, but not great for HDR. It is HDR600 Meaning it meets certain criteria to be certified HDR compatible with atleast 600Nits of Brightness which for HDR is much better than HDR400 or HDR10.

I GOT ONE question that I hope you can help me out with so I’m crossing my fingers you’ll see this comment. I’m trying to decide between this monitor (Odyssey G5) and one of Samsung’s older models the CRG5 Series. I’m leaning towards the CRG5 because of the 240hz (future proof in case I upgrade my PC) BUT one of the specs that worries me is the 4ms it has compared to the 1ms that the G5 has. Overall if you had to choose one monitor to go with which one would you choose (is this newer version better in every way other than hz)? Sorry for such a long question but I hope you know it’s a really big deal to me since it’s so much money and one of my biggest purchases for my gaming set up. Anyway if you do see this I would SERIOUSLY appreciate your thoughts. I’m stoked to be a new subscriber!!
I personally would go for the higher resolution of the G5. Most AAA games aren’t consistently hitting 144hz even with a 3080 so it’ll be a while until that standard across games. I like the better visual fidelity if I can at least get 60-90 in AAA games outside of doom which hits 144fps with my 2080ti and looks amazing in 1440p

never would have thought a 5600xt could run in 4k my 5700xt just gets above 60 on most games ahhaha

QLED is just another layer that kinda makes colours better, but it’s still a VA panel underneath

I was afraid of all the bad reviews about VA panel monitor. Thing is i have very old 43 icnh Philips that is IPS but has insane input lag ... its probable due to 5 ms response time. I think this Samsung will do much better
Only reason I would go with 27 vs 32 would be the ppi. 27 would have higher ppi so text would look sharper if I need to do any sort of document work on the side. But for Gaming experience 32 would be sweet for 1440 and 144hz. Thanks for your time doing this review!

I gotthis monitor for my ps5. Its performance slaps! Ps5 does not support 2k resolution but this monitor upslace 4k resolution which is actually seen as 2k on ps5. Its tricky and works well!

For anyone wondering, there is no standard for DP 1.2 versus 1.4 so yes what they call 1.2 here is actually 1.4 and can handle HDR.

@@1UpNerdcore Dude, I was actually wrong. I just brought this monitor home and it forces me down to 60hz whenever I enable HDR. Now I can't remember where I read that. Either way, my panel was plagued with the quality issues so many are complaining about. I switched back to my MSI for the time being. :(
It should be able to do HDR at 144hz with a DP port. I’ve done it.

@@danielanane246 the quantum dot film and the response times are a massive deal for image quality and movement clarity. 240hz is nice in any fast paced game competitive or otherwise. the g5 is 500ish bucks cheaper but it's also 500 bucks worse.

Hi Steven, I've seen so many negative reviews on Amazon about this monitor having ghosting & dark smearing issues. There is even a video on TH-cam showing UFO test that show large dark smearing. Obviously you haven't seen this with your unit, also the gameplay you showed looked fine. Is this due to adjusting the correct picture settings? Or is it likely a faulty unit if this occurs? I tried contacting Samsung but I've had no joy. Appreciate your input 👍🏻
I personally haven’t noticed anything. I think for some it will be faulty units and others it could be a need to tweak settings. As for the ufo test I think for general population the subtleties of those tests will not be noticeable but if you’re an enthusiast and game a lot it might be more noticeable.

Hey there, I am considering buying 3x of these 32-inch screens for a triple sim racing setup. I am a little worried about the reported ghosting issues (which I know you have already replied to in these comments). The main attraction is the 1000R curve of this model.
The alternative would be the 165hz 1500R models from Gigabyte/AOC/Viewsonic etc, which seem excellent and have a few more features (and arguably better quality panels).
Any thoughts on which route you would go? Essentially, does the curvature alone make up for the other shortfalls, when compared to monitors from the other manufacturers above?
Does the Samsung brand name give any more comfort over the other brands at this price point?

It's not even close to the G7 but as someone who has used a VA monitor after my old TN I literally can't find black smearing / ghosting even when looking for it. I do notice the bad contrasts on IPS monitors though. It's pretty cheap now a days during some sales.
When I hear people say in 2021 that "HDR is not where its suppose to be" I want to start choking myself. I am playing,recording and editing HDR content since 2016 when maybe then that statement could be somewhat true, but today ? I mean do people really have bad eyes ? Can't you see the crisp and realism HDR gives to video games ? take AC Origins, look at the sky, the details everything is so much more realistic and close to real life, take AC valhalla, the sky looks like its real, take any game you want, its better with HDR period.
Since that depends on the nits and things like local dimming being a factory saying “HDR isn’t where it’s supposed to be” has more to do with what the panel is calling HDR. 400 nits with no local dimming males for a subpar HDR experience. 1000nits with local dimming makes for an amazing HDR experience.
@@1UpNerdcore Well all in all the screen is horrible, both SDR and HDR, just returned it, pale colors, atrocious image noise, I have an AOC monitor in my office at home, the cheapest thing ever connected to my work laptop, it works 10 times better.
HDR10 is does not mean it has 1000nits brightness. that simply means it will accept an HDR signal. The actual brightness is only 350nits and not worth it to use the HDR function. The G7 is actually better, but not great for HDR. It is HDR600 Meaning it meets certain criteria to be certified HDR compatible with atleast 600Nits of Brightness which for HDR is much better than HDR400 or HDR10.

I GOT ONE question that I hope you can help me out with so I’m crossing my fingers you’ll see this comment. I’m trying to decide between this monitor (Odyssey G5) and one of Samsung’s older models the CRG5 Series. I’m leaning towards the CRG5 because of the 240hz (future proof in case I upgrade my PC) BUT one of the specs that worries me is the 4ms it has compared to the 1ms that the G5 has. Overall if you had to choose one monitor to go with which one would you choose (is this newer version better in every way other than hz)? Sorry for such a long question but I hope you know it’s a really big deal to me since it’s so much money and one of my biggest purchases for my gaming set up. Anyway if you do see this I would SERIOUSLY appreciate your thoughts. I’m stoked to be a new subscriber!!
I personally would go for the higher resolution of the G5. Most AAA games aren’t consistently hitting 144hz even with a 3080 so it’ll be a while until that standard across games. I like the better visual fidelity if I can at least get 60-90 in AAA games outside of doom which hits 144fps with my 2080ti and looks amazing in 1440p

G5....my gigabyte broke after 3 days. The coloring on the G5 is solid and the difference between 144 and 165hz is negligible
If I have always played on a tv and this is my first monitor for my Xbox series x. Will I notice ghosting while playing free sync enabled for 60 fps or 120fps games ?
