    You make it look so easy... I may just have to try it. The salad you served at lunch last week was so good, so I can testify that the outcome is worth the small amount of effort. I would love to see more seed types demonstrated. And my question would be, can you store the left over cut greens in the fridge?... or should you harvest only what you want for the meal at hand and then cut the rest the following day? Thank you for sharing your expertise:) Joy

    • @ChocolateBoxCottage
      @ChocolateBoxCottage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joy, since you are not gardening outdoors, it might be a lot of fun. Leftover greens can be stored in the fridge in a container or plastic bag with a paper towel to absorb extra moisture. They last a week easily. Thanks for watching - it was such a surprise to see your (Bill's) name! :) XOXOX Michele

    Could you use bags of bird seed? They usually have a variety of seeds and grains. Wonder if they are treated with anything before being packaged?
    Could you also throw the soil with because stems to the chickens?

    • @ChocolateBoxCottage
      @ChocolateBoxCottage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Robert, most commercial birdseed these days is heat pasteurized to prevent sprouting because people didn't like "weeds" growing under their bird feeder. And you would have no way of knowing what else it is treated with since it is not packaged for human consumption. Seeds for this are not expensive. I share seed sources and other helpful info here: chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/ And yes, the rootwad with leftover soil can be given to chickens, ducks, rabbits, or other animals, or it can be composted. ~Michele

    Can you also do bean sprouts? Pinto beans? black beans? Black eyed peas? Do you plant popcorn, like regular popcorn that you would buy at the grocers? Such a good informative video, I subscribed today. Thank you. (Mary Anne Record) Gary's wife.

    • @ChocolateBoxCottage
      @ChocolateBoxCottage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good questions, Mary Anne. I have grown some but not all of those, so I will add them to my list to try. Thank you! Yes, popcorn like you pop for a snack. It does need to be fresh enough to sprout. Older popcorn that has been sitting at the store for a couple of years may not do as well as popcorn purchased from a seed company that supplies microgreen growers. The flavor of popcorn shoots is intriguing. Sweet, with a hint of maple. So good! Thank you for subscribing! Love, Michele

    I'm going to try this. I live in south Texas. In my houseplant soil, I get fungus gnats. Is that a problem with growing these indoors?

    I should try these. I do sprouts. But I usually end up feeding them to my chickens.

      Oh no, "should" takes all the fun out of it, Jeannie! Only do it if it truly sounds appealing. I love my little indoor salad garden and want you to love it, too. Especially during the months the outdoor garden isn't producing, it is a blessing to have a continuous supply of fresh, nutritious greens because we rely more on stored/preserved food. Love, Michele

    Great information! How does this work in your schedule? That is - if you want a daily salad, do you pretty much need to plant seeds on a daily basis so that you can harvest daily? How often do you plant?

    • @ChocolateBoxCottage
      @ChocolateBoxCottage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sally, when all of our kids were home I planted every other day; now that it's just two of us I plant 4-6 bowls 2-3 times a week. There is always something ready to harvest this way. You might start with planting 4 bowls 1-2 times a week and then adjust according to your needs. Soon you will find more ways to use and enjoy your greens and your consumption will go up - which is a good thing. Love, Michele

    So this morning, I was going to order seeds but it’s not so easy as they aren’t ALL from one source. Would you agree?
    From your supply list, it appears 1) Johnny’s, 2) Azure, 3) high mowing, 4) sprout people, then a huge jump in price to 5) starwest.
    I’m having trouble finding the buckwheat seeds. ….
    Finally decided on Johnny’s seeds, good price, don’t have to wait til October like with Azure, and found most of what you suggested.
    I also bought the broccoli one!
    Are celery, carrots, and broccoli harder to grow? (Also here from Mary’s nest suggestion). ❤

    Are you pulling “holes” or hulls off? What do they look like? Sorry, new here and to gardening esp inside. Ty! 🌱

    • @ChocolateBoxCottage
      @ChocolateBoxCottage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh goodness, no apology needed! That is a good question. Most of the seed hulls fall off on their own. I make a habit of gently brushing my hand over the sprouts whenever I water to help dislodge the hulls and any that don't fall off I pull off just before harvesting. ~ Michele

    Hey Michele, hopefully you will see this comment since I noticed that your post was 5 months ago. Can I just use the non-GMO, organic seeds that I already have on hand to try this out or do I need to purchase specific seeds? I would like to try it before investing in more seeds. Thanks! Love your video, very informative!! About to watch part 2! 😁

    • @ChocolateBoxCottage
      @ChocolateBoxCottage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cindy! It depends on what kind of seeds you have. I recommend starting with the ones shown in the video because they grow quickly and at about the same rate, and produce a good "head" of greens. Not all seeds perform the same. The system works if you follow it as shown. Here's a link to the printable guide. Love, Michele chocolateboxcottage.tv/videos/indoor-salad-garden/

    Would used coffee filtters work for the cover paper?

    • @ChocolateBoxCottage
      @ChocolateBoxCottage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Claudia, thank you for your question. I experimented with using coffee filters. They are too thin and unfortunately allow the seeds to dry out, so I don't recommend using them. It might work to layer 4 coffee filters together, if you want to try. 🌸 Michele
