Squidge Rugby is the channel that explained rugby to me for the first time four years ago as an American who didn't grow up with it and had no idea what was going on. I'm a living breathing example of growing the game (I subscribed to Peacock Plus in September with the sole purpose of watching the World Cup, so they are making money off me). I feel so lucky that I was able to see the South Africa video before it was taken down, because it was fantastic. The whole situation with content creators and copyright this World Cup has been disgraceful.

Watching rugby in the USA has been very frustrating. They showed it on Peacock, but they only showed the game from kick-off. Sometimes literally seconds after kick-off. No build up or getting some pre game commentary. We rely on channels like this to get a feel for the game and get in the buildup. Thank you for your content!

That's utterly bonkers. We need the game permeating all corners of the US. That and west and central Africa are the key growth areas, with Asia and central Europe next in line.

That was really only the case for replays. When I tuned in to catch matches live, they generally started from about the time that teams stopped their warm-ups and returned to the locker rooms. Peacock Plus wasn't the best that I've seen of the world cups in terms of streaming the games, but it was pretty good overall.

@@bnations2000 You are attempting to re-write history. I know what I saw on live streams from Peacock Plus, and it was rare for any match that we got to see any of the anthems, just the Aussie & Dan Lyle. Compared to previous RWC it was a travesty.

As a South African I was obviously always going to be paying attention to the Springboks in a Rugby World Cup. But 100% because of channels like yours and Squidges I was fully invested in teams like Chile and Portugal. This HAS to be a benefit for World Rugby. Also as much as I love Squidge's analysis etc... it was vastly inferior trying to follow what he was describing with stills only during the RWC.

  • @andrewvanderwalt8494

I was so impressed with Squidge's video and the team's breakdown of the final and how much respect they have for Rugby and South African rugby players and having that video removed is not right!!. I wonder if it was due to using World Rugby Footage and not even audio...Honestly I found This 2023 World Cup coverage lacking compared with Japan's coverage in terms of match highlights and replaying of matches...You guys, Egg chasers and Squidge did a great job covering it!

I am a big fan of the NBA in the US. There are SO MANY content creators who are using clips from the basketball games to create their content.
For me personally and I think for lots more, it only helps to raise my excitement to stay up until 2 am and watch some games.
I think world rugby is short-sighted

The point about the value of shorter form content on social media for young people is 100% true
I know personally if I’m on Twitter and I see a tweet with a 20 second video of a big play in an NFL match, there’s a good chance I’ll turn on the TV and watch it live.
Most of the time when I see a tweet about rugby it’s “This video is unavailable in your region”

It's really scandalous that such content can be stolen and that's the only word for it ,stolen. You go to so much effort and you put so much intelligence into your channel which these scammers would never ever be capable of. Hopefully into the future, you can protect your content because it is without doubt the best coverage by far this last number of months. The success of the RWC was down to the fans and you captured that like no one else. Of course the dynamics of the teams and the draw etc etc were huge but from a fans perspective what went on around the games was very enjoyable. For me you were the only one who captured this and brought us with you. The future of the game is safe with people like you Tim doing your stuff. Thank you so much for all your brilliant videos. 👏 👏👏👏👏

An idea for the next world cup/ growing the game: Take the bottom ranked teams and put them into a pool (the development pool) so that they will only play each other, and award a trophy to the winner of that group. Allow that one team alone to advance to the round of 16 where they would be fed to the lions. Thoughts?

Great video as always Tim - very balanced.
It's not just rugby though. I've been trying to find highlights of Glen Maxwell's innings in the cricket world cup but it seems impossible. You'd have thought that the cricket authorities would want it plastered all over the internet as it's such a great opportunity to highlight how great the sport is.
On a side note, an independent singer/artist (Ren) recently got to No. 1 in the UK album chart basically by allowing (encouraging) content creators to react to his music online. I'm sure that there was probably a bit more to it but he grew a huge online following by doing the opposite to the RWC and CWC.

  • @nadinevonmoltke1140

It's such a short sighted view - when I watch a channel I love (like yours) I immediately want more, which means I go to the source of the clips you have used. That's how this medium works. If they allow full access to content creators they would benefit. Let's hope some younger, digital natives get in there soon, or their business models will go the way of Blockbuster Video....

Great commentary, Tim. I have referenced your comments here (by name) on a World Rugby video about kickers hitting the uprights that had more commenters talking about the Squidge takedown than Marques of Portugal’s three doinks. Your take on this subject is spot-on. Back in 2008 (!) I had an original amateur TH-cam video of tries in the Bledisloe Cup match that November in Hong Kong that I took with a Sony Handicam from the nosebleed seats, so I can relate to the stupidity of video content being taken down. (That was well before the era where people could monetize TH-cam videos, but I had over a thousand views in less than a day, so I was understandably miffed….I’ve hardly posted anything since then!)

Eggchasers Rugby and Squidge Rugby are my favourite rugby channels. World Rugby is becoming like governments, more of a dictator focusing on their needs rather than the needs of growing the game and the fans. Many times after watching Squidge or Eggchasers I would actually go back and watch the games again to pick up on things. World Rugby is actually shooting themselves in the foot with their actions cause I think channels like Squidge and Eggchasers in the bigger picture bring more fans to watch the games on main channels.

    Hi Tim,
Have loved your coverage since finding the channel around the start of the World Cup! Particularly grateful that TH-cam's automatic captioning seems to work really well with your voice
I'm one of the players for SA Deaf Rugby - I actually sit on the board there as the players' representative, and have also been nominated to the World Deaf Rugby board, so we'll see what comes of that... Watching this all go down with a close eye on how we'd need to handle broadcasts etc ourselves in future! That said, things are very much amateur in our arm of the sport right now, so love your growth mentality. If you'd ever like to have a chat, drop me a line - heck, we can get you in touch with England Deaf rugby ahead of their tour here next year!

One can structure an earnings model with broadcasters, say RTE/ Virgin for example used you guys as content creators and promoted your content like they do with Aertoroa podcast. The benefits would be huge. 1. A constant feed of content, 2. The diversity of views from different podcasters would attract a diverse fan base. Etc, etc.

There are lots of areas where the "old world" (and I'm not young :) and the world of youtube and content creators haven't made peace yet and learned to co-exist for the better good. Here is Aus we even have the national parks in some states effectively locking out content creators by try to charge them ridiculous licensing fees! Keep up the good work. Love the channel :)

  • @andy_olive
    @andy_olive 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I love all the YT rugby content, especially Squidge…
Maybe WR needs to do is do a content creator deal where creators pay to use footage maybe as a percentage of all monetization each month for content using their footage or ensure that the broadcasters advertisers get their ads played on anything using clips.
Because broadcasters aren’t only salty because they had exclusivity rights but they sold advertising based on those rights so they will have a million legal issues to deal with.

Tim, I love you to bits, since I came across you in the early Autumn, I'm a Munster supporter first and foremost, an Irish Irish supporter, just a scintella behind that. however, I am also an England Fan and got great payback after ye won the RWC back in 2003. Grand Slam Champs, RWC Champs and we got to beat ye for the next 3 years. Now that was a High for me anyway. All of that is a positive negative. Or, the other way 'round. England great, Ireland Greater........

Interesting and measured comments as always Tim. I hadn't realised till now that you were no longer with BT(TNT). Personally, I'd take your views over pretty much every 'pundit/analyst' on the channel. The podcast is the go-to on a Monday over all the 'pundits'.

Please don't take offense to what I am about to write. Squidge is the best rugby based TH-camr. Like at all. How he analyzes everything and explains it all is fantastic! Pity World Rugby see fit to strike channels that aim to help grow the game...

Really good, considered, thoughtful and thought provoking video, You did indeed earn my subscription to your channel! I think there is a risk that content creators and broadcasters will come into conflict because broadcasters (many of whom have shareholders to please) will see scarcity of footage and images as their trump card. For content creation, it's (supposed) to be about analysis, marvelling at the sport along with creating and sustaining a fan culture. I can see how this can add to the bottom line eventually, but not in the short term. And short term is how we live now. It is a thorny issue & I'm not sure how (when we get to the nitty gritty) we work thru this difficulty.

You need to visit places like Spain, Portugal, Holland and other European countries and make shows about their grassroots rugby as they are the next Fiji or Rumania. We don’t play much rugby in Andalucia but you’re quite welcome to stay when you visit Spain. Keep it up mate!

This is where E-sports is miles ahead, I think. They recognised very quickly how content creaters play a very pivotal part in how e-sports is broadcasted and engaged with. So they created the concept of co-streaming, which allows specific partner content creators to provide commentary and live broadcasting through their own channel in order to build the hype and engagement around the games.
I think Rugby can do something similar... At the very least allow specific content creators access to and the ability to use video elements of the game to continue to grow the interest. This will be especially helpful during the club rugby seasons.

I agree Tim, broadcasters spend millions but also make billions. I'm a small rugby motivation youtube channel, but like the rest, we are promoting the game of rugby. Not all is about money ...we are sharing the love of the game... agree " we are on the same team" ....

You are right! During the WC I couldn’t get enough content from all the different podcasts and tit bits ,official and otherwise. I really enjoyed your input and I have to say quiet unbiased take on the games and as a Saffa living in Swiss it was great to see someone being rather gracious to the Boks - appreciating Rassies innovation etc- but my point being their couldn’t be enough content produced to saturate the need- theirs no need to deprive the public of content- and in so doing they allowed very inferior highlights (3 odd mins or so) which does nothing for the viewer and like you say if you are trying to grow the game then the rugby World Cup is the best possibility in doing so , so they should open up and let people create content and highlights and in away the people’s creativity like yourself and many others can be let loose and it can grow organically and influence whoever in however way ! It’s frustrating to hear your story with your own video that you created and it being flagged! Frustrating to say the least ! Man I’d be fuming and it’s an injustice! Keep talking and spreading the truth and things will improve! Thank you again for what you do!

I have been watching rugby for close on 50 years, I used to watch the 5 nations, send rugby special on the BBC, RWC on ITV. Then I moved to NZ where I have watched every All Blacks test since 2010, a lot of super rugby, and NPC. I've been to live games and been a season ticket holder.
But this RWC I was only able to watch 12 games, that was all that was available on terrestrial TV. I downloaded the Rugby Pod TV app in the hope of being able to watch at least extended highlights, but it never seemed to play properly. All I was left with for the non NZ pool games was the 3 minute highlights provided by world rugby which was really only 2 minutes of match time.
As a result I never felt connected to the tournament.
Had we had the analysis of Squidge Rugby with video and obviously other youtubers, it would have gone a long way to filling the gap left by the limited TV coverage.

100% you had the best fan and atmosphere content at the RWC.
Big broadcasters focused so much on expert analysis, that they missed the atmosphere & vibe completely.
World Rugby needs to chat to F1 about the benefits opening up the media options to more than just the TV broadcasters.
They are definitely too focused on how the current pie is sliced up, instead of how to make the pie bigger.

Hi Tim. Is there no option to “share” monetisation with a broadcaster? Like you said it shouldn’t be a zero sum game. If TH-cam wants to be a top content viewer surely some kind of sharing would help. Squidgy does such a brilliant job in a very different way to anything you would see from a major broadcaster, I am sure that a splitting of the monetary proceeds would be beneficial to all. Thanks and keep up the great work you definitely added positively to my World Cup experience. Cheers from springbok country.
