Living with host family feels like a fast track integration to the new world you're in. Stressful at first but leaves you with meaningful experiences that will change the way see the world-forever. I thank all the host families i ever had.
My host family in Munich are the most lovely people I had ever met. They're the reason I'm going to study over there next year, and why I continued to learn German. Being lucky enough to have the right exchange family can truly be a life changing thing. Great vid as always!
Being on the same page with a host family right from the start is a very wise & important thing to do! However, not less important thing is to research everything you want to know about a particular culture before you go there. Guests have an ability to ask all questions they have about the host family before they sign up with them. Third, EVERYONE has to know and understand the saying that one cannot go to a someone's home with their rules. That means we have to be prepared and be flexible in foreign countries! This is however not a reason for the host family to infringe on your personal rights and space. Learn diplomacy to get it your way without offending other people! Cultures and customs strongly influence one's worldview and their common sense. :)
I'm 16 now (junior in high school in U.S.) and I'm applying to be a foreign exchange student for a year (2016-2017) in Switzerland. I am applying for Switzerland, but I'm afraid it will not be available. If it's not available next on the list is Germany. I'll be incredibly bummed if I don't get accepted. I feel like during high school is a great time to go! And I'd really hate to miss out on such an experience. I wish I would have had the courage to apply earlier. I had talked about it with my parents before during my freshmen year. But I wasn't really serious about it. But now I just want to go, and do what you did and ditch English, and learn! It seems like such a magical experience!
+huntersihelp Hey man, I know your comment is a long time ago. How is it going? I'm german (Bonn/Cologne) and right now in China as an exchange student. So if you want to have a chat about this whole high school exchange thing send a message or something ;).
Thanks Wolter, you made me remember my UK host family... :') What an amazing experience! every point is real. Although sometimes I think is matter of luck.. also one good point is that it is more affordable than student residence or apartment, and in my very personal opinion, safer. Saludos!
Would you recommend Portugal or Spain or Italy for one year study abroad? I'm in 10th grade and I speak Spanish but i don't know which to choose they're all awesome
yes they are all awesome. you won't go wrong with any of them. if you are looking for English speaking.. Portuguese speak the best and most English... then it is a tie for 2nd with spain and Italy... and they are a distant 2nd :) however, you will learn the language in all three countries (as they are similar languages) so if you want sights and cities to see then probably Italy wins out. I love them all though. "tough life" you have there ;) good luck abroad!
Hey ! I really want to go for an exchange but my parents really think that living with a host family is unsafe .. They think i might be abused by them ... what shall i do ?
What is some advice you have for me going to Brazil in January next year ? I'm studying the language right now , but I feel I won't be that great at it when I get there will My family be interested in helping me with the language ? And will I still be able to make friends.. ( attending my senior year in Brazil highschool ) subscriber from NEW ZEALAND :)
Can you do a video on affordable for studying abroad for college students. Love your videos they are so help full to me I'm planning to be a future world traveler keep them coming
I cannot understand how someone would choose to stay in a foreign country with a host family. It seems very weird to me how it is to have two people that they are not actually your parents that have similar authorities on you. I find it very awkward....
Not everyone is lucky enough to have enough to pay everywhere they go so it will be nice if you would be understanding to it now cause I presume you are 4 years older now
was wondering if you or your wife can make a video about traveling with a 4-6 month old baby. (how easy or hard or if you recommend wait until he is at least 1 year. Or easiest cities to travel with a baby. Thank you
Karlita pulido we found it easier traveling with the kids when they were 4-6 months. write me a message on our facebook page and I can give you some tips and recommendations. we also have some videos on here for traveling with the little ones (my wife does them).
Another thing that minors have to worry about when they stay with host families is creepy family members propositioning them . I have two friends who ran into that with the father of the host family. One with a student organization, and one in a hosting situation set up with family friends by her own parents. In the case of the hosting organization, that friend was automatically moved after a certain period of time and was able to get away from the guy. In the family arranged placement, she literally had to balk at the airport and refuse to get on the plane. She was made to look like an unreasonable brat when about to be sent back to stay with the first family because her traditional Asian parents didn't understand at first what she meant when she was trying to tell them that their friend's husband was a sexual predator. It wasn't a family that was comfortable talking frankly about such things.
Vin 206151 not a good situation. but moved on to two other fantastic families (the program I was in had you hosted by three families over your year and I just got unlucky with one of them) still love the other two
hittingtax26 sure, specially for us portuguese people because we are very used to watch the brazilian "telenovelas" and listening to brazilian music. Brazil doesn't get to hear as much portuguese from Portugal but still, it's just a different accent with a few different words :)
R O'Connell there are with some language schools. I know in NE brazil I stayed with a family while studying Portuguese and I was in my late 20s and there were people in my class that were in their 50s so all ages are welcome. but those are usually just language schools.
woltersworld its a sentence that we use a lot, as an insult or as a display of frustration, but as an insult it's probably the " heaviest we have " i assume you know exactly what it meens ( literaly translation that is )
+faythmomto5 Breakfast - 8am - 9am Lunch - 12pm - 2pm (barely anyone lunches as early as 12pm, so it's more 1pm to 2pm, unless you have schedules) Snack - 4pm - 6pm Dinner - 8pm - 10pm (people usually dine between 8.30pm to 9.30pm, but it depends if you're a 'late-dinner' kind of person or 'early-dinner' kind of person) Note: usually 'early-dinner' kind of people tend to have dinner earlier (8pm) and have supper (some sort of lighter dinner, snack kind of thingy before going to sleep) at around 10pm or something. And, yes, kids have to go to school daily. Except on weekends... depending on the schools. And see that the Portuguese school system is heavy and kids end up having a lot of overwhelming studying hours. One of the most overwhelming in the EU (if not the most), that the EU has been trying to make the Portuguese government lower the amount of required hours kids need to spend in school... unsuccessfully yet.

lmao, Yes I guess some people get lucky but its hit and miss. I still want to have a social life as well which I think would be hindered with a family
Not everyone is lucky enough to have enough to pay everywhere they go so it will be nice if you would be understanding to it now cause I presume you are 4 years older now

Does anyone know of any good exchange programs for teenagers?
Rinie8300 Rotary Youth Exchange and AFS were both good ones when I was in school... though that was 15-20 years ago :)
Thanks so much for this information! ☺️👍
Gostei muito do video!!! A parte do "puta que pariu" kkkkkkkk E ouvir você falar de São Paulo me fez ter saudades da minha terra natal!

How did you manage to travel to so many places?
Another thing that minors have to worry about when they stay with host families is creepy family members propositioning them . I have two friends who ran into that with the father of the host family. I got to about 1:01 before I made the decision to never live with a host family lol
hi.. please how I can document all the issues that I had with the host family?
+Oraib Abdulla Just keep notes. If you have a cell phone with note-taking capabilities, that would work, or a personal laptop.
Can someone plz help me find one, am from Kenya
May I ask what the issue was in Finland?
Vin 206151 not a good situation. but moved on to two other fantastic families (the program I was in had you hosted by three families over your year and I just got unlucky with one of them) still love the other two
woltersworld We want to know all the horrible and dirty little moments from your travels... HAHAHAHA!!!
Can you get by with Portuguese Portuguese in Brazil, or Brazilian Portuguese in Portugal?
hittingtax26 sure, specially for us portuguese people because we are very used to watch the brazilian "telenovelas" and listening to brazilian music. Brazil doesn't get to hear as much portuguese from Portugal but still, it's just a different accent with a few different words :)

Is there a program for adults 25 +? I did'nt think there would be :s

woltersworld Oh :( Thank you for your reply!
Can somebody help for searching a home family in japan I’m 15 now and I want to study there for two years or more :)
When you become an exchange student do you have to know the fluent language, or how much of the language should you know
What were you eating at 7:43?

TheAquarius1978 hey, that was my host dad's first sentence he taught me. And I am not even joking
woltersworld its a sentence that we use a lot, as an insult or as a display of frustration, but as an insult it's probably the " heaviest we have " i assume you know exactly what it meens ( literaly translation that is )

#6. Accidently walking in on your Hot Host Sister Nude in the Bathroom... ;) HAHAHA!!! Cheers Brother!
I would feel very uncomfortable living with or having anybody I cared about sharing a home with someone who feels this way….
sidebar..if Portuguese don't have dinner to 9 how do their kids get up for school daily?
+faythmomto5
Breakfast - 8am - 9am
Lunch - 12pm - 2pm (barely anyone lunches as early as 12pm, so it's more 1pm to 2pm, unless you have schedules)
Snack - 4pm - 6pm
Dinner - 8pm - 10pm (people usually dine between 8.30pm to 9.30pm, but it depends if you're a 'late-dinner' kind of person or 'early-dinner' kind of person)
Note: usually 'early-dinner' kind of people tend to have dinner earlier (8pm) and have supper (some sort of lighter dinner, snack kind of thingy before going to sleep) at around 10pm or something.
